THE RED OAK SUN 19 Mar 1908

Hezekiah Cozad died suddenly Tuesday night, 17 Mar 1908, at the home of his son, Charles E. Cozad, near Hawthorne, he having came a few days previously to stay with the family of his son while the latter went to Chicago with a shipment of cattle. Short services will be held at the son's home on Friday morning by Rev. Flint of the M.E. Circuit, after which the remains will be taken to his late home in Essex. Funeral services will be conducted by there by Rev. Crisman of the Shenandoah M.E. Church Friday afternoon. Mr. Cozad was a native of Ohio, born in Jackson county, Sept. 22, 1833. He was married in Ohio in 1844 (has to be a misprint - should be 1854, I think) to Margaret Birchard, from which marriage there survives a daughter, Mrs. H.R. Dilly, residing northeast of Red Oak. Mrs. Cozad died in 1857. In 1859 he remarried this time to Sarah A. Dukeshire, who survives him with eight children, who are:
1. Mrs. J.W. Bellis of Castana, Monona Co., IA. 51010
2. [William] Grant Cozad of Ottumwa, Wapello Co., IA. 52501
3. George Cozad of Essex, Page Co., IA. 51638
4. J.F. Cozad of Shenandoah, Page Co., IA. 51601
5. Mrs. Theodosia Potts of Carleton, Okla.,
6. Mrs. William Bellis of Basin, Okla.,
7. Charles E. Cozad of Hawthorne, and
8. Mrs. J.C. Wellwood of Council Bluffs, Pottawattamie Co., IA. 51501
Mr. Cozad was soldier in the war for the Union, serving 18 months in Co. K of the 4th Iowa Infantry, he going with Sherman to the sea. He was a member of the M.E. Church for 50 years. He resided in the vicinity of Essex for 51 years - an upright citizen and a most highly respected neighbor.
