A.P. Nelson and family arrived as pioneers in Wheeler township in May 1874, driving through from Winnebago Valley in the extreme southeastern corner of Minnesota.  Their personal effects were all loaded on a wagon drawn by a yoke of oxen, coming by way of Fort Dodge and Sac City through what is now Odebolt, the journey requiring three weeks.  The only house in the vicinity of Odebolt then was the Sparks place.  This same journey that required three weeks could easily have been negotiated by Mr. Nelson, before his death, in one day, by the modern method of transportation which he had the privilege of enjoying for several years.

In the Seventies and up until the time that the Odebolt Post Office was established in 1877, Mr. Nelson received mail at a Post Office located in the Northwest corner of section 14, Wheeler township and now owned by John W. Nelson (in 1977).  The Post Office was called Wheeler Ranch.
