A Case of Poisoning.
A Young Man at Nichols Dies
by His Own Hand.
The passengers of the Muscatine Western last evening brought in the news of the sudden death by poisoning of a young man named Shew, aged about 25, a brother-in-law of Dr. Carl, of Nichols. The young man walked into his brother's drugstore and either purposely or by mistake took poison, from which he died yesterday morning about 9 or 10 o'clock. The reports seem somewhat conflicting and it is almost impossible to secure accurate information.
In response to a request
for particulars, the Journal received the following telegram from Nichols
this afternoon: "Nichols, Iowa, Oct. 1, 1890.--This man Shew was found
by his brother-in-law (Dr. Carl) yesterday morning. He had the appearance
of having taken an over-dose of something and it was impossible to awaken
him. He died at 2:20 yesterday. Operator."
(The operator at Nichols
says that the above is all the information he could get concerning the
suicide there. It occurred Monday night.)

Mrs. Lida Shield, 82, Route 4, Muscatine, died at 11:50 p.m. Wednesday as the results of injuries sustained Wednesday afternoon when she walked into the side of a car on County Road W. about two miles west of Muscatine.
Sheriff Richard Oppelt said
Mrs. Shield had walked down the lane at her home and was going to cross
the road to a mailbox.
She reportedly had poor
eyesight.
Mrs. Shield had paused at the side of the road for an approaching school bus. After the bus passed, Mrs. Shield stepped out on the road and into the path of a car driven by Miss Joan Schmidt, 18, also of Route 4. Miss Schmidt applied the brakes of the car, and swerved to the left, but Mrs. Shield walked into the right side of the vehicle.
Robert Herrin driver of the school bus, said he had noticed Mrs. Shield by the road and had looked in the rear view mirror after passing her. He told the sheriff he saw the aged woman walk in the path of the car. Which she apparently did not see approaching.
Mrs. Shield was taken to
Muscatine General hospital for emergency surgery. She had a fractured pelvis,
dislocated right ankle, and severe compound fractures of the right thigh,
left forearm and left hand. She also had multiple cuts and bruises.
No charges were filed in
the accident.
Mrs. Shield was a life resident
of this community. She was born in Muscatine county Oct. 10, 1881, the
daughter of Fred and Dena
Bloomer. She was married
March 4, 1903, at Muscatine, to Robert G. Shield.
She was a member of Spangler
Methodist church.

A week’s illness terminated in the death of Louis Skolnik, the 10-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Skolnik of 815 East Seventh street, at the Hershey hospital shortly after eight o’clock Saturday evening. An attack of appendicitis and peritonitis is attributed as the cause of his death. The boy underwent an operation in a final effort to save his life but the surgery proved futile.
Burial services over the boy were conducted in the Jewish cemetery east of the city last evening just before sundown, in conformity with the Hebrew custom.
The Skolnik boy had been a pupil in the fourth grade at the Jefferson school. His illness dated back barely a week. Although his condition was regarded as serious it was not until shortly before the operation that he was considered in danger of dying. A complication of ailments resulted in his demise.

George W. Stearns, an old
citizen of this county, residing near Wilton, committed suicide yesterday
by cutting his throat with a razor. He had been suffering for some
time with a fever sore on his leg, which was badly injured a week or two
ago by his team running off with him. It distressed him much, and
he remarked to his family that he ould give anybody a hundred dollars who
would kill him and put him out of his misery.
It became apparent that his
leg must be amputated to save his life, and yesterday surgeons were sent
for, but before they arrived he went out on the porch and cut his throat.
He seemst o have committed
the deed deliberatlely, as he had unbuttoned his shirt collar and rolled
it back, and also rolled up his sleeves. He had evidentally made
several attempts to cut his throat before he succeeded. The fatal
stroke made a gash from ear to ear and severed the jugular vein.
His wife and son were in
the house at the time, and heard him fall from the chair before they knew
what he had done.
The deceased was about 50
years of age, and was in comfortable worldy circumstance, but is thought
th have lived unhappily in his domestic relations.

the Mississippi River on the Missouri side southeast of Wyatt Saturday
morning.
The body of Edgar Brayn Stroughmatt,
18,of Olmstead, Ill. was found 12 miles south of Wickliffe, Ky., on the
Missouri banks by Kenneth Hall, who was in charge of a crew from the DeeVac
Veneer Co., of Caruthersville, who was floating logs down the Mississippi.
Young Stroughmatt had been
missing since Feb. 2 when he and his brother Ernest, 28, apparently drowned
in the Ohio River after being on the river in a boat.
Ernest Stroughmatt's body
was recoverd Feb. 17 near Olmstead, which is on the banks of the Ohio.
This makes the third tragedy
in the Stroughmatt home since 1948. It was that year that another

Edgar was identified by
a large metal belt buckle and also the belt, which had shiny bits of glass
adorning it. The youth was clad in a pair of khaki pants with a pair
of blue jeans underneath and had on a pair of leather hunting boots.

found by Travis Shelby, Mississippi County coroner. Shelby discovered
an aluminum tag in pant's pocket of the victim. It read "hook net
or snag line tag, Kentucky, 1953, residence No. 63" Shelby checked
with Illinois officials and they verifed that the license number belonged
to young Stroughmatt.
There was no evidence of
foul play in either of the brother's drownings.

Died, at his home in Nichols,
on Sunday, Jan. 17th, of consumption, Mr. S. M. Swickard. Sam was taken
with hemorrhage of the lungs last June and since then has been fading away.
In August last he, with his wife and baby, went up to Lake Minnetonka,
hoping that the pure northern air might restore his health. Vain hope.
He came back no better, and about the last of October he tried the sunny
south in the desperate hope that this would help him. His brother Link,
who is in poor health also, was with him. the boys came home from Texas
on last Thursday and Sam died on Sunday. All that change of air, medical
skill and kind attention of loving friends could do was done, but all in
vain. Sam was stricken with death. He was buried on Tuesday with Masonic
honors.
The church was filled with
friends who came to show their last tribute of respect to him and show
their sympathy to the heart-stricken widow in this her hour of sorrow.
The coffin was carried to the bedside of his father, who wanted to see
his boy's face once more. It is hardly hoped that Mr. Swickard can recover.
Ere long he too will fall by the same dread disease, and be buried by the
side of his wife and nine children who lie in one row close by the old
homestead.
Sam was born in Pike township
and has lived here all his life. Everybody knew him and everybody loved
him. He was a noble-hearted man, pleasant in his business relations, kind
and indulgent to his family, courteous and affable to everybody, honest
as the day is long, energetic and obliging. His place cannnot be filled.
Everybody misses him.
