Maurice J. Safley, 73, 111 Robin Rd., died Sunday afternoon at University Hospital, Iowa City.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. Dr. Wesley Snodgrass will officiate.
Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation begins at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home.

Maurice Safley was born July 6, 1905, in Tipton, the son of James A. and Margaret Phelps Safley. He was a life resident of the Muscatine community.
His marriage to Henrietta McDonnold took place May 15, 1929, in Tipton. He was a member of the Boat Club, and had been
employed as an insurance agent for National Travelers Life of Des Moines.

Survivors include his wife; one son, Harold F. (Buzz) Safley of Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Lois Method of Silvis, Ill.; eight grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and three daughters, Mrs. Henrietta Wilson of Solon, Mrs. Effie Milner of Des Moines & Louise Safley of Cedar Rapids.  He was preceded in death by one brother and& a son.

Mrs. Salek died  Wednesday, Oct. 23, 2002, at Riverbend Nursing and Rehab Center.  She owned and operated Sunset Inn on U.S. 61 South for 17 1/2 years.  Clazena Kobes was born Oct. 4, 1904, in Muscatine. She married Louis Salek in 1920 in Muscatine.
Memorials may be made to Saints Mary and Mathias Parish.

Survivors include a son, Marvin, Muscatine; 17 grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and several great-great-grandchildren.

PEORIA HEIGHTS -- John F. Sammon, 86, of 1724 E. St. Jude Court died at 5:25 p.m. Wednesday, April 26, 1995, at Galena Park Home.

Born June 28, 1908, in Peoria to John and Frances Knebel Sammon, he married Rosemary Roederer on June 28, 1937, in Wilton, Iowa. She survives.

Also surviving are three sons, John R. of Brisbane, Australia, James of East Peoria and Richard T. of Peoria; six grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by one daughter, Kathleen Hippen.

A mail carrier for the Peoria post office for 34 years, he retired in 1969. He later was a bailiff at the Peoria County Courthouse for six years. He was a member of the National Association of Letter Carriers Union 31.

He was a member of St. Peter's Catholic Church in Peoria and its Senior Citizens Club.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at his church. The Rev. David M. Kipfer will officiate.  Visitation will be from 6 to 8 tonight at Wright & Salmon Mortuary, with recitation of the rosary at 8 p.m. Visitation also will be 30 minutes before services at the church. Entombment will be in Resurrection Mausoleum in Peoria.  Memorials may be made to his church or the Divine Word Seminary in Epworth, Iowa.

Nina Alice Sander, 86, formerly of 1402-A Grand Ave., and a 10 year resident of Fairfield Bay, Ark., died Thursday morning, Nov. 25, 1993, at Valley View Manor.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. The Rev. Terry Plocher of the Musserville United Methodist Church will officiate. Pallbearers will be Dennis McGuire, Marvin Kruse, LeRoy Watters and Jack Mergen.

Mrs. Sander was born April 5, 1907, at Conesville, a daughter of William Clark and Henrietta Kincaid Forbes. She married Donald G. Sander Aug. 2, 1930, in Muscatine.

She was a member of the Musserville United Methodist Church.
She had worked as a clerk at King's Store and J.C. Penney, at several button companies, Swift's and H.J. Heinz Co.

Survivors include a daughter, Shirley Townsend of Muscatine; a son, Wayne A. and wife Ruth Sander of Muscatine; four grandchildren; two great-grandchildren, and a sister, Verda Herlein of Des Moines.

Beryl J. Sarchett was born Oct. 4, 1925, in Mason City, a daughter  of Levi and Florence Graves Sutton.   She was united in marriage to L.E. ``Elso'' Sarchett.

She moved to Muscatine 45 years ago. She was a secretary at McKee Button Company for 40 years.  Beryl was an avid birdwatcher and enjoyed gardening.

Survivors include her sister, Marlene Benjegerdes of Colby,  Wis.  She was preceded in death by her husband and her parents.

Anna Stueland was born June 28, 1918, in Davenport. She married Rolland Schenkel in 1934 in Muscatine, Iowa. She married Richard Schesser in 1959 in Rock Island. He died in 1980.

HILDA C. SCHMIDT, 98, died June 24, 1997, in Colorado Springs. She was a bookkeeper for Phillips 66 in Fort Lupton.

Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. today at Swan-Law Funeral Directors, 501 N. Cascade Ave.  The funeral will be at 1 p.m. Friday at the funeral home with the Rev. Tom Mroch officiating. Burial will be at Memorial Gardens Cemetery, 3825 Airport Road.

Mrs. Schmidt was born Feb. 5, 1899, in Wilton Junction, Iowa, to William and Louise (Wacker) Brammeier.  She was married Dec. 28, 1926, in Fairmont, Minn., to George Schmidt, who is deceased.

She is survived by a son, Arthur H. of Montgomery, Ala.; a daughter, Kathleen Holzhauer of Pueblo West; a brother, Otto Brammeier of Truman, Minn.; five grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by three brothers, Fred, Herbert and Arthur.

Mrs. Schmidt was a member of Holy Cross Lutheran Church. She was known as Granny to her family.  She had lived in Colorado Springs since 1991, previously living in Britton.

Mrs. Floyd W. (Della) Schneider, 73, of 1106 Nebraska Street, died at 1240 a.m. Sunday at Muscatine General hospital after a sudden stroke.

Mrs. Schneider had been a resident of Muscatine for 45 years. She was born July 17, 1889, in Rock Island county, Ill., the daughter of William J. and Jane Beeney Coulter.

She was married Aug. 18, 1922, in Missouri, to Floyd W. Schneider. She was of the Methodist faith.

Surviving are the husband, Floyd W. Schneider of Muscatine; two sons, William C. Cozad and Harold H. Cozad, both of Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Elmer Burzell of Muscatine, and a stepdaughter, Mrs. Randall Reed of Muscatine; 17  grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren, and one great-great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by parents, first husband, four brothers, three daughters, three sons and one grandson.

Funeral services will be held at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Ralph J. Wittich funeral home. Rev. T. Ray Crews will officiate. Interment will be at Greenwood cemetery.

Gustav T. Schroeder, 40, resident of the Blue Grass community his entire life, died at 4:30 o'clock this morning at his home in Blue Grass after an illness of six months.

Schroeder, a carpenter by trade, was born in Blue Grass, Muscatine county, Dec. 12, 1891, and was educated in rural schools there. He married Miss Ruby Pahl May 6, 1916 in Davenport and had lived in Blue Grass since. He was of Lutheran faith.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Miss Naomi Schroeder at home; his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Schroeder of Bettendorf; four sisters, Mrs. Louise Langtimm of Davenport, Mrs. Ave (?Ava? I wonder) Alt and Mrs. Ed J. Hoffbauer, both of Blue Grass, and Miss Katherine Schroeder of Bettendorf; three brothers, Julius Schroeder of Blue Grass, Hugo Schroeder of Walcott, and Otto Schroeder of Davenport.

The body was taken to Runge's mortuary and will be returned to the family home in Blue Grass Tuesday morning. The funeral services will be held at the home at 2 p.m. Wednesday and at 2:30 p.m. in Blue Grass church. Burial will be in Blue Grass cemetery. The family has requested that flowers be omitted.

A letter from Mr. E. A. Albee speaks of the demise of Hans D. Schroeder, formerly of this county (Scott). His death occurred in Pleasant Prairie, Muscatine county, at 8:30 a.m last Saturday (05 Feb 1887) morning.   He was the oldest person in the township. The letter states that "he was born in Holstein on the 18tb of April 1800, and was, therefore, almost 87 years old at the time of his death.

He came to America in 1857, and settled in Scott county, where he resided until 1870, when he removed to this township, built a comfortable little home on the farm of his son, John D, retired from active labor, and has since lived there comfortably, dividing his time among his children and rendering himself useful and agreeable to all with whom he came in contact. He was a sober, honest, industrious man and highly respected by all who knew him. He was twice married. He leaves a widow, seven children, forty-one grand children, and eleven great grand children to mourn his loss.

BLUE GRASS -   Mrs. Gustav Schroeder, 63, of Blue Grass, died late Wednesday night in her home after an illness of three months.
Services will be held at 2:30(?) p.m. Saturday in the Runge Chapel, Davenport. Burial will be in the Blue Grass cemetery.
The former Ruby Pahl was a native of Blue Grass. She was married to Mr. Schroeder in Davenport in June, 1916. He died in 1932. Mrs. Schroeder had been an interior decorator for the past 40 years.
She is survived by a daughter, Mrs. Naomi Stoffers, Blue Grass; 5 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; and five sisters, Mrs. Ivan Fix, Blue Grass, Mrs. Pearl Blank, Mrs. Raymond (Florence) Arp, and Mrs. Riley (Velma) Dietz, all of Walcott and Mrs. Carl (Opal) Bornholdt of Buffalo. Three brothers and two sisters preceded her in death.

A former Muscatine resident, Gary Schultheis, 30, of Martinsburg, Mo., was killed in an accident shortly before midnight Thursday near Stockton, Mo.  Missouri State Highway Patrol officials said the accident occurred at 11:55 p.m. Thursday about two miles west of Stockton, Mo., on highway 22.

Schultheis was operating a pickup truck west bound when the vehicle came to a sharp curve, ran off the road and turned over, pinning Schultheis under the vehicle.  Schultheis was dead on arrival at Cedar County Memorial Hospital, said the report.

A passenger in his auto, Donald Ray Goldsbury (sic), 22, of Martinsburg, Mo., was held overnight for observation at Cedar County Memorial Hospital.  Goldsbury sustained minor injuries.

Services for Gary Lee Schultheis will be held at 10:30 a.m. Monday at the Riley funeral home, Muscatine.  Burial will be at the Conesville Cemetery, with military rites conducted jointly by the VFW, American Legion and World War I Veterans.

Mr. Schulteis was born July 23, 1943, in Muscatine, the son of Earland Edward and Virgil Claire (Fry) Schultheis, Sr.  He was married Aug. 10, 1968, at Rock Island, to Catherine Goldsbury (sic).

Mr. Schulteis was in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1962 to 1968.
He had been employed since 1968 with the S.J. Hoffmann & Sons Silos, Inc., Muscatine, and was a crew foreman.  Schultheis had moved to Martinsburg in July of this year wand was employed there by the silo company.

He is survived by the widow Catherine Schultheis; three sons, Terry, Aaron, and Patrick; two brothers, Earland E. Jr. and Michael R, both of Muscatine; a sister, Mrs. Donald (Beverly) Haines, Winfield Ia; his mother, Mrs. Virgil Schultheis, Morning Sun; nine nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by a father and a brother.

Mrs. Louis Schwartz, 85, a resident of Muscatine for the past 67 years, died at her home, 812 Sycamore Street at 6:10 p.m. Sunday following a lingering illness.

Martha Elizabeth Hoffman was born in Willingshein, near Herschfeld cur-Hessian, Germany, on October 17, 1849. She attended school there and joined the German Evangelical church.

In 1864, accompanied by her parents, she came to America making the trip in a sailing vessel and taking 27 days to cross the ocean. After two years during which time the home was made in New York City, she came to Muscatine and had resided here since, with the exception of one year spent in Washington.

On Oct. 31, 1872, she was married to Louis Schwartz, who preceded her in death in 1918. To this union five children were born, three of whom survive. They are Fred Schwartz of Muscatine, Mary L. Schwartz at home, and Walter L. Schwartz of Lancaster, Wis. One child died in infancy and another daughter, Mrs. Ida Koehler, also preceded her in death.

She is also survived by one sister, Mrs. William Paschen, Hamlintown, Iowa and the following grandchildren, Mrs. Gladys Korschot, Earl Schwartz, Louis Schwartz, all of Muscatine, Martha, Mary Lois and Richard Schwartz of Lancaster, Wis. Two sisters and one brother also preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held Wednesday at 2:00 p.m. from the Ralph Wittich Funeral home, 216 West Third Street with burial in Greenwood cemetery. The Rev. Benjamin F. Schwartz, assisted by the Rev. K. M. Jeschke, will officiate. The body is at the home, 812 Sycamore Street, where it will remain until time for the services.

Brian Wayne Scranton, 22,  of Apache Junction, Ariz., formerly of Washington, Iowa, and Charles City, Iowa, died Monday  (June 12, 1995) at Apache Junction.  Funeral services will be held  at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at St. James Catholic Church in Washington, with the Rev. Dennis Martin officiating.  Burial will be in Elm Grove Cemetery.  Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday at the Jones Funeral Home, 116 E. Main St., Washington, with the family receiving friends from 7 to 8:30 p.m.  There will be an 8 p.m. prayer service.

Brian Wayne Scranton was born May 6, 1973, in Muscatine to Paul Scranton and Joyce (nee) Lukavsky Scranton.  Paul attended schools in Washington, Iowa, and graduated from Charles City High School in 1991.  Paul served in the United States Air Force during Operation Desert Storm.  He was very active in the Boy Scouts.  He was employed by Safeway Food Stores in Apache Junction, Ariz., at the time of his death.

He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Washington and Immaculate Conception Church in Charles City.

He is survived by his parents, Paul and Joyce Scranton of  Indianola; a sister, Lisa Marie Scranton of Wilton, Conn.; his                    grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Robert Scranton of Washington; and  his stepgrandmother, Margaret Lukavsky of Washington.
He was preceded in death by his grandfather, Edwin Lukavsky.
A general memorial fund has been established.

Francis "Fran" L. SEILER, born July 31, 1910 in Muscatine, Iowa, passed away December 23, 1995 at the age of 85. He is survived by his "ever loving" Lela Irene, wife of 62 years and son: Dennis Eugene Seiler, both of OKC; other survivors include brother Leonard Seiler of Temple City, CA. & numerous other relatives and friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Charles & Julia Seiler, & brother John Seiler. Fran & Lela were married on Sept. 10, 1933 in Covina, CA. & had many happy years of always enjoying  love and life together. Fran will always by remembered as a loving husband and father who was generous in so many ways. He enjoyed working, fishing, camping, and traveling with his "Lela" always at his side.

He was a lifetime member of the Knights of Columbus and was an active member of the Catholic Church. Funeral Services will be 2 PM Wednesday at Resthaven Funeral Home, Rev. Wade Darnnel of Sacred Heart Catholic Church officiating with interment in Resthaven Memory Gardens.

Services for Paul L. Sehnert, 80, Muscatine, will be 11 a.m. Saturday at  Muscatine Memorial Park. No visitation will be held.

Mr. Sehnert died  Sept. 28, 2002, at Sienna Crest, Fort Atkinson, Wis. Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine, is in charge of the  arrangements.

He was a registered professional civil engineer for 34  years in seven states. He joined Stanley Consultants in 1956 and  retired in 1984. Major projects of his career included designing a  cross-country railroad in Liberia, Africa, a deep-water seaport in Bintula, Malaysia and the Interstate 10 and Interstate 17 interchange at the airport in Phoenix.

He was born Sept. 29, 1921, in Dorchester,  Neb. He married Shirley Statton in 1946 in Medford, Ore.  During World  War II, he served in the Army. He received a Bronze Star Medal and Presidential Unit Citation. He later served in the Korean War as a  captain in the Army Corps of Engineers.

In lieu of flowers, memorials  may be made to First Presbyterian Church Memorial Fund or Rainbow  Hospice of Jefferson Wisconsin 53549.

Survivors include his wife,  Shirley; sons, Paul, Muncie, Ind., and Thomas, Fort Atkinson; two  grandsons; two step-grandsons; and sister, Patricia Williams, and  brother, Donald, both of California.

Died, at the home of his daughter, Mrs. W. J. Dietrich, in Nichols, Friday, Nov. 13, 1891, at 6:50 a.m., Joseph Shannon, aged 71 years, 9 months and 13 days. Mr. Shannon was in his usual health Tuesday and had attended the funeral of his daughter-in-law the day before. Wednesday morning he complained of feeling unwell and did not leave his bed. At about 3 o'clock in the afternoon he had a stroke of apoplexy, and after intense suffering he passed to rest yesterday morning. Mr. Shannon was highly respected and esteemed by all who knew him and his death is a loss to Pike township as well as to his family. Six children, four daughters and two sons, survive him. They are: Mrs. D. M. Landis and Mrs. F. W. Downs, of Davenport, Mrs. J. S. Smith, of Goshen township, Mrs. W. J. Dietrich, of Nichols, and Robert J. and Richard T., of Pike township.

Letts, Ia. Feb. 17 - John W. Shellabarger, a well known and highly respected citizen and a long time resident of Muscatine and Louisa Counties, passed peacefully away at his home here at 4:15 o'clock Wednesday afternoon, death being due to ills attendant upon old age.

The decedent was born in Montgomery county, Ohio, July 25, 1832. When fourteen years of age he removed with the family to Iowa, settling in Cedar Township, Muscatine county, in 1846. Here he resided until 1901, at which time he retired from the farm and moved to Letts, where he has since resided.

He is survived by his wife and nine children, all of whom are living and who with the exception of a daughter in Canada were with him in his last sickness to administer every aid and comfort. The children; Katherine Isabel Pace, Muscatine, Iowa; Elizabeth Hidlebaugh, Redverse, Canada; Emma Ellis, Minneapolis, Minn; Clara Elder, Nichols, Iowa; William A. Shellabarger, Muscatine, Iowa; Martin L. Shellabarger, Letts, Iowa; Frances A. Eliason, Letts, Iowa; Walter L. Shellabarger, Letts, Iowa; Jetta Turkington, Columbus Junction, Iowa.  No arrangements have been made for the funeral.

Mrs. Susan E. Shellabarger, 84, of Muscatine died at Mt. Pleasant, Ia., at 8:15 a.m. today after an extended illness.
She was born Sept, 7, 1869 in Cedar township, being a daughter of William and Fannie Simpson Verink and had been a lifelong resident of Muscatine and Louisa counties.

She was married to Martin L. Shellabarger Oct. 10, 1900 at Muscatine. She was of the Methodist faith and a member of the Order of Eastern Star at Letts.

She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. William (Dorothy) Jensen of Des Moines. Preceding her in death were her parents, husband, and daughter and brother.

Arrangements for funeral services are pending. The Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home is in charge.

Services are Tuesday at 10 a.m. at the Geo. M Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Gary Howse of the Four Square Church will officiate.  Pallbearers will be Bob Shultz, Jeff Hinden, Ray Mason, James Ryder, Albert Dean Stacher and Scott Cozad. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 2 to 8 p.m. , at the funeral home where a memorial has been established.

Shelli was born Nov, 16, 1971 in Muscatine a daughter  of Donald and Wanda Cozad Shoultz. She was a life resident here and was a junior at Muscatine High School. She was employed at Sizzlin' Sam's.

Survivors include her parents Donald and Wanda Shoultz and three sisters, Mrs. Ray (Yvonene) Mason, and Peggy Sue Shoultz both of Muscatine; and Spec. 4 JoJean Shoultz stationed in Germany.

The death of Mrs. Joseph Siegel occurred at her home on East Fifth street this morning at 1:30 o’clock after an illness of four months.  Mrs. Siegel was born in Russia and was 55 years of age.  She came to America 35 years ago.  she is survived by her husband and two daughter, Mrs. Dorothy Becker and Miss Marle Siegel.  One grandchild also mourns her demise.

The funeral will be held from the home Sunday morning at 10 o’clock.  Rev. Rabbi Bleeden will have charge of the services.

Louis Siegel, a resident of this city for the past 20 years, died at midnight last night at his home at 608 East Sixth street, after a protracted illness of three years.  He had passed his 68th year and was beloved by his large circle of friends.  He came to this city from Europe over 20 years ago, and was followed a short time after by his family.

He is survived by his wife and 11 children.  The latter are: Mrs. Minnie Goldenburg, Mrs. Belle Kattlelmen and Mrs. Fannie Blumenthal, all of Omaha, Neb.; Abe Siegel, of Davenport; Mrs. Sarah Leifstein, of Rock Island, and Mrs. Mollie Skolnic, Mrs. Mamie Isaacson, Joe Siegel, Max Siegel, Miss Rose and Miss Anna Siegel, all of this city.

The funeral was held this noon from the home of the family, Rabbi Bleeden being in charge.  Immediately following the services the remains were taken to the Jewish cemetery, where interment was made.

She is survived by a son, William, and a daugher, Bertha Stanbro, Muscatine; two brothers, Lester and Ora, Muscatine, and a sister, Mrs. Barbara Gaylord, Keithsburg, Ill.

Wilton IA., Sept. 13, Mrs. A. E. Simons, 79 years, one of the best known pioneer residents of the community passed away at 10 o'clock today the home of her son.  Her death was due to old age and followed an invalidism of a year.  Her husband was killed in the war of the rebellion and for many years after that she followed the profession of nursing.  She had an exceptionally wide acquaintance in and around Muscatine as well as Wilton Iowa.

Three children survive they are Mrs. Maude Allen of Chicago, Mrs. Henry Dunker of Muscatine, and George Simons of this place.  She is also survived by five grandchildren.  The funeral will likely be held on Friday with interment in the Essex cemetery in Illinois.

Chris Singleton, 33, of Conesville was found dead at his home late afternoon on Friday, July 5, by his wife, Sue.  A Muscatine County Sheriff's spokesman said Singleton died of a self inflicted gunshot wound.

Singleton was a rural postal carrier at the Columbus Junction Post Office, a member of the Iowa National Guard and an avid fisherman.

Services were held Tuesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction.  The body was cremated and a private family burial will be held at a later date.

Services were held at 9:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Stacy-Lewis Chapel with Rev. Robyn Plocher officiating.  Music was by Sarah McCleary.  A private burial was in the Conesville Cemetery.

He was born April 6, 1958, at Iowa City, the son of Donald Arthur and Mary Hamilton Singleton.  He married Susan Fuller on August 12, 1978 at Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine.

He was a rural mail carrier from the Columbus Junction Post Office and was an avid fisherman.
He was a member of the Conesville United Methodist Church.

Surviving are his wife; two children, Kelly Jean and Jesse Aaron, both at home; his mother, Mrs. Mary Singleton, and step-father Richard Singleton; his parents-in-law, Ron and Doreen Fuller, all of Conesville; two brothers, Bill "Butch" Hesseltine of Conesvile and Norman Singleton of Garden, Michigan; two sisters, Mrs. Joseph (Dawn) Ferris of Burlington, and Mrs. Tim (Jacque) Bell of Lone Tree.

COLUMBUS JUNCTION--Donald A. Singleton, 67, died at 12:06 a.m. Monday at this home in Conesville following an extended illness.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Stacy-Lewis funeral Home in Columbus Junction.  Lyle Ball will officiate.  Burial will be in the Conesville Cemetery.  Visitation began at noon today.  A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home.

Donald Singleton was born Jan. 6, 1913, in Conesville, the son of John and Letitia Ramer Singleton.  He was a life resident of the Conesville area.

His marriage to Mary Hamilton Hesseltine took place Jan. 6, 1956 in Kahoka, Mo.  Mr. Singleton was a Conesville melon farm operator.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Norman Singleton of Muscatine, Christopher Singleton of Columbus City and William Hesseltine of Conesville; two daughters, Mrs. Joseph (Dawn) Ferris of Burlington and Mrs. Tim (Jacque) Bell of Lone Tree; three grandchildren and two sisters, Mrs. Roxie Hankins of Portland, Ore. and Mrs. Ernest (Aleta) Bjornstadt of Wilcox, Az.

Two brothers, one sister and his parents preceded him in death.

Pallbearers will be Norman Singleton, Christopher Singleton, Bill Hesseltine, Tim Bell, Joe Ferris and Richard Singleton.

Per my cousin, Mary Hamilton Singleton, Donnie's grandfathers were Jesse Ramer  and James Singleton, both  buried at Brockway Cemetery near Conesville

All that was mortal of the late Virginia Sissel was laid to rest in Parr cemetery on Monday morning, April 26th. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. Joseph R. Hanley at the Pleasant Prairie M.E. Church. Those who officiated at pall bearers were: John Tough, John Staton and Elbert Allbee.

Mrs. Virginia Sissel had been a resident of Fulton township, Muscatine county from 1850 until she was called to the great beyond. Her death occurred at her home in Pleasant Prairie on April 23, 1909.

Virginia Chambliss was born in Greenville County, Virginia Oct. 14, 1831 and was thus, 77 years, 6 months, and 9 days old.  In 1840 she came with her parents to Marion County, Indiana where they resided until 1850, then moved to Fulton township, Muscatine Co., Iowa where she resided until called to the great beyond.

She was united in marriage with William Sissel on Sept. 22, 1853 who proceeded her to the great beyond on Oct. 2, 1878. To this union there were born eleven children, ten of whom are living-Benjamin Franklin of Schickley, Nebr., Evaline S. Daum of Oberlin, Kansas, Martha S.of Greenfield, Ia., Charley who died in infancy, Jessie A. McGarvey of Letcher, S. Dak., Nora M. Sumbler of Republic city, Kansas; John J. of Harvard, Nebr., Julia M. Mcdonald of Walnut Hill, Ill., William L. and Emery E. of Pleasant Prairie; Hattie M. Endicott of Davenport, Iowa. Besides there are twenty-eight grandchildren and ten great grandchildren and a host of friends to mourn her loss.

She had been a member of the U.B. Church for forty years, also, a member of the Pleasant Prairie Aid Society.
Nine children were at her bedside a few days before the final call came, John being unable to be present.
Funeral services were held in the Pleasant Prairie M.E. Church at 10 O’clock A.M. April 26. Rev. J.R. Hanley of West Liberty officiating. The pall bearers were John Tough, John Staton, Cyrus Baker, Henry Parr, Frank Staton, and Elbert Allbee. Interment was made in the Parr Cemetery.

Pleasant Prairie--The funeral of William Sissel, one of our oldest and most respected citizens, was preached last Saturday by Rev. Bunce. The procession to the grave was one of the longest ever seen at this place.

Skeels, died this morning at his home in Fruitland Township, of pneumonia. The funeral services will be held Sunday afternoon from the house, interment to be made at Greenwood cemetery.

Helen, the 16-year-old daugher of Mr and Mrs H.H. Skeels succumbed to pleural pneumonia shortly after 10 o'clock yesterday morning, at the home of her parents, 605 East Third street. She had been ill for the past ten days, but it was only early yesterday morning that hopes for her recoverly were given up. The death of one who was just to budding into young womenhood is mourned by a host of friends in this city. She had resided in Muscatine for the past fourteen years, coming here with her parents from Montesuma when she was two years old. She resided here ever since and attended the Jefferson school until a short time ago. The bereeaved parents, one brother, Wesley, age 7; and four sisters, Hazel and Ruth at home; Mrs. Walter McCormick of this city and Mrs. Albert Smith of Des Moines are left to mourn the deceased. Funeral arrangements willl be announced later.

Little Margaret, infant daughter of Mr and Mrs Harry Skeels, residing at 800 West Eighth street, died yesterday morning at 6 o'clock. The cause of death was attributed to a severe attack of whooping cough. The little child was about 18 months old, when it was so suddenly called by death. The parents have the sympathy of a large circle of friends and acquaintances in this their hour of bereavement. The funeral was held this afternoon at 2 o'clock, Rev. W.L. Clapp conducting the ceremony.

A week’s illness terminated in the death of Louis Skolnik, the 10-year old son of Mr. and Mrs. M. Skolnik of 815 East Seventh street, at the Hershey hospital shortly after eight o’clock Saturday evening.  An attack of appendicitis and peritonitis is attributed as the cause of his death.  The boy underwent an operation in a final effort to save his life but the surgery proved futile.

Burial services over the boy were conducted in the Jewish cemetery east of the city last evening just before sundown, in conformity with the Hebrew custom.

The Skolnik boy had been a pupil in the fourth grade at the Jefferson school.  His illness dated back barely a week.  Although his condition was regarded as serious it was not until shortly before the operation that he was considered in danger of dying.  A complication of ailments resulted in his demise.

Funeral services for Miss Rose Skolnik, 56, 608 East Fifth street, who died at Muscatine General Hospital at 2:45 a.m. today following a several months’ illness, were held this afternoon at 3 o’clock at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home.
Rabbi J.I. Taxon, of the Tri-City Jewish Center, officiated at the rites.  Burial was in the B’Nai Moses cemetery.

The daughter of Max and Celia Glatstein Skolnik, Miss Skolnik was born Dec. 12, 1900, in Muscatine.  The life-time resident of the city was a member of the Muscatine chapter of the Hadassah Society and the B’Nai Moses Sisterhood.

Survivors include one brother, Sam M. Skolnik, two sisters, Anna and Edith Skolnik, and her father, Max Skolnik, all of Muscatine.  She was preceded in death by her mother and one sister.

Mrs. Alaline Flavella Smith, 83, widow of Chockly C. Smith, former Muscatine button manufacturer and pioneer grocer, and mother of Milo D Smith, well known Davenport Realtor, died in her home at 502 East Thirtieth street at 5;45 am today after a brief illness.

Born Oct. 3 1865 in Muscatine, the daughter of the late Cornelius Walburn Fisher and Mary Bower Fisher, she was educated in the schools there. She was married to Chockley C. Smith in Muscatine July 11, 1932, when she and her husband moved to Davenport. He died in November, 1936.

Mrs Smith was a member of Muscatine Congregational church and of Electa chapter, O.E.S.and Rose Croix chapter, White Shrine, both of Muscatine.

Surviving are a daughter, Mrs. J.J. Bomke, Muscatine; a son, Milo, Davenport ; four brothers, George, Edwin and Charles, all of Muscatine and Harry L. Fisher . Walnut Ridge, Ark...and two grand children Milo D. and Garry  L., both of Davenport.

The body was removed to Hill and Fredricks mortuary, where services will be held at 3 pm Thursday, The body will the be sent to Muscatine to the Fairbanks buneral home for services Friday at 2 pm. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery, Muscatine .

Pam Saturnia will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery. Organist will be Betty Lincoln. Visitation  will be from 1 p.m. until service on Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Smith was born on Aug. 27, 1910,  in Conesville, the daughter of Jessie and Nettie Phillips Delap. She married John E. Smith on June 18, 1927, in Muscatine. She worked as a nurses aid at many nursing homes including Lutheran Homes in Muscatine.  She worked at McKee Button Factory and Heinz both in Muscatine.

Survivors include three sons, John R.   Smith and his wife, Jean, of Rock Island, Ill., DeWayne E. Smith and his wife, Peggy, of Muscatine and   Donald Smith and his wife, Donna, of Shannon, Ill.; a daughter, Janice Bower and her husband, Gerald, of   Grundy Center; five grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents,   her husband on June 27, 1961, one brother, and five sisters.

Nichols, May 16, 1888.--This community was never more shocked than when the sad news came of the death of Charles F. Smith, at Fountain, Colorado. The sad accident was caused by a powder explosion. He was well known here and highly respected by all. He leaves a wife, two children, father, mother, two sisters and a brother to mourn his loss. The community sympathizes with the relatives in their sad bereavement.

Muscatine, Iowa --- Services for Chester S. Smith, 87, of 924 Eisenhower Ave., will be 1 p.m. Friday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine.  Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at the funeral home. Mr. Smith died Monday, Nov. 9, 1998, at Crescent Nursing and  Rehabilitation Center.

He had farmed, operated service stations and retired from construction work.

He was born June 22, 1911, in Bennett. He married Frances Pottorff in 1935 in Davenport. She died in 1976. He married Elma King in 1978 in Fort Myers, Fla.

Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.

Survivors include his widow; daughters, Beverly Warner,  Pleasant Balley, Nancy Smith, Barstow, Calif., Rebecca Smith  Jess, Muscatine, and Diana DeLap, Attica, Ind., a stepson, a  stepdaughter, 11 grandchildren, 24 great-grandchildren’ a sister, Katherine Stowers, Raytown, Mo,; and a brother, Eugene J.,   Davenport.

Chockly Collins  Smith, 73, former Muscatine grocer and later a button manufacturer in the firm of Smith & Richards in Muscatine died at his home, 502 East 13th St. Davenport, at 145 pm Friday after a short illness. He was the son of the late Henry G. and Sarah J. Smith.

He was born in Muscatine county Feb 19, 1863, and received his education three. He married Adeline F. Fisher in Muscatine July 11, 1883. For many years he conducted a grocery store at 114 West Second street, Muscatine, retiring in 1902, when he entered the button manufacturing business.

He retired from the button business six years ago when he moved to Davenport, Friends knew him as a man who was always considerate and kind to others. He was a member of the First Congressional church, of Muscatine, of Iowa Lodge No. 2. A.F. &A.M., the DeMolay consistory, of Clinton, and Kaaba Temple in Davenport.

Surviving are his wife, a son , Milo D Smith of Davenport; a daughter, Mrs J.J. Bomke, of Muscatine. and three brother, Horton of Muscatine, Clark, of Nampa Idaho, and Charles N., of Dunning, Neb.

The body was taken to Hill & Frederick mortuary where it will remain until 9 am Monday when it will be taken to Fairbanks funeral home in Muscatine. Funeral services will be held from the Fairbanks chapel at 2 pm Monday. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery in Muscatine.

George E. Smith of Fairport, who has resided in that community for the past 14 years, died at his home at 4:15 p.m. Thursday after a two days illness, following a stroke. Previous to moving to Fairport he had resided in Rock Island for 20 years. He was employed as a light tender for U. S. engineers.

Mr. Smith was born in Wheeling, W. Va., Dec. 31, 1868, the son of Joseph E. and Roxana McCombs Smith. He married Edith R. Dawson of Muscatine Feb. 12 of this year.

Surviving are his wife and the following children, Homer L. Smith of Milan; Edgar E. Smith of Cambridge, Mass., Joseph E. Smith of Florence, N. J., Mrs. Thelma Christiansen of Conesville, Mrs. Georgia Geiger at home, two step-sons, Lysle L. Dawson of Burlington, Bruce K. Dawson of Rome, N. Y., a sister Mrs. Sid Stafford of Ohio; two half-sisters, Mrs. Bessie Lohr of Wheeling, W. Va., Miss Daisy Smith of Florida and one half-brother Carl Smith of Columbus, O. His father, Joseph E. Smith, died at Wheeling at the age of 96 years just two months ago.

The body is at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals and rites will be held there at 2 p.m. Sunday. Burial will be in the Fairport cemetery.

Services were today at 1:30 p.m. at the Lunning Chapel in Burlington.  Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery.
Memorials may be made to the Middletown Presbyterian Church.

Mrs. George E. Smith, 66, year old resident of Fairport, Iowa and mother of Homer L. Smith of  Milan, was claimed by death last Thursday evenng after an illness of a week. Death occurred in  Hershey hospital, Muscatine and was attributed to pneumonia.

Funeral srvices were held Saturday afternoon at 230 o'clock from the Fairbanks Funeral home  in Muscatine. Rev.David Berger, pastor of the First Presbyterian church of Muscatine, officiated  and burial was made in Fairport cemetery. Mr. and Mrs. Homer Smith and son Lyle of Milan  attended the rites.

Mrs. Smith, whose maiden name was Miss Mary Elizabeth Barr, was born June 25,1868 in  Dixon, Ill., the daughter of Isaac and Roxiana Goodspeed Barr. She received her education in the  schools   there and was married Dec 6, 1890, in Dixon, Ill. to  George E. Smith.  The couple resided  for several years in Dixon and in 1903 moved to Rock Island. They resided there until 1923,  when they moved to Fairport.

Surviving are the widower; three sons, Homer of Milan, Joseph E. of Florence, N. J. , and Edgar of Cambridge, Mass; two daughters, Mrs. Thelma Christiansen of Conesville, IA. and Mrs. Georgia Geiger of  Muscatine, and a brother, Charles Barr of Peoria, Ill.

Marie "Peggy" Hajicek Smith died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 2002, at Liberty County Place in Centralia, Wash.

Mrs. Smith was born May 16, 1920, in Muscatine, Iowa, the daughter  of Griffith G. and Delta M. Campbell Goddard. She graduated from Muscatine High School in 1938. She married Joseph F. Hajicek on Feb. 11, 1940, in Muscatine.  She moved to Independence in 1950.

She attended Central Missouri State College in Warrensburg and received a bachelor's degree in education. After teaching in the Kansas City Public School System for a few years, she returned to CMS for a masters degree in education and again for a masters degree in library science. She taught elementary school for nearly 35 years at East Rock Creek Elementary School in Independence.
She served as school librarian at Northeast Junior High School in Kansas City and retired from the Kansas City Public School District in 1982.

After the death of her first husband, she married Kenneth Smith of Independence. Following his death, she moved to Chehalis, Washington. She was a member of the Community of Christ. She was a member of the American Association of University Women.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Joseph F. Hajicek, in 1978, her second husband, Kenneth Smith, in 1992, her son, Joseph Frank Hajicek Jr., her parents, her sisters, Naomi Goddard, Betty Vetter Williams and Ruth Ballenger, her brother, Griffith G. Goddard Jr. and her stepdaughter, Sharon Hayes.

Her survivors include her son, Dr. Joseph O. Hajicek, and his wife, Ruth, Chehalis, Wash.; her stepdaughter, Kathy Keeton, and husband, Terry, Independence; a stepson, Dennis Smith, Puerto Rico; a granddaughter, Aimee Iacuessa, her husband, John, and great-granddaughters, Elena and Aliya, Olympia, Wash.; a grandson, Jeremy Hajicek, his wife, Stephanie, and great-granddaughter, Cora, Covington, Wash.; three step-grandchildren, David Keeton, Kevin Keeton and Elizabeth Hayes; two stepgreat-grandchildren; her sister,  Nomi Kluska Henry, Independence; and nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Tuesday at Speaks Midtown Chapel.   Burial will be in Woodlawn Cemetery. Friends can visit from 7 until  8:30 p.m. Monday at the chapel.

Burton F. Snyder, 73, of 1028 Sycamore street, a former Muscatine county auditor, died at 415 a.m. today at Muscatine General Hospital after an illness of one week.

He was born Aug. 9, 1887 in Muscatine county, a of John and Phoebe Griffin Snyder and had been a resident of Muscatine for 33 years. He had been a accountant at Grain Processing Corp. the past 17 years.

Mr. Snyder married Lulu Van Horn Nov. 24, 1910 at Wapello. He was a member of the Masonic lodge at Letts and Kaaba Shrine at Davenport.

Mr. Snyder served as Muscatine County Auditor in 1937 and 1938.

Surviving are two sons, Van B. Snyder of Muscatine, and Alton D. Snyder, of San Diego Calif., a daughter, Mrs. John F. Kinnermann of Arlington, Va., and one brother, Chester C. Snyder of Muscatine, along with seven grandchildren and one great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his wife and two brothers. Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Monday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. Burial will be at Letts. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Sunday.

Mrs. Snyder was formerly Miss Ella Coder, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. John Coder of near Cranston, and at the time of her death was about twenty-nine years of age; She was united in marriage a period of about eight years ago, preceding which she taught for a number of years in the schools of Cedar township, Muscatine county, and Concord township, Louisa county.  She was a charter member of the Oak Grove Christian church and since becoming a member was an earnest worker in the church.

Besides her husband she leaves to mourn her passing away, three small children, Hazel aged six years;  Harold, aged two years, and a three weeks' old babe.  Other relatives are two brothers, C, M. Coder, of Cranston, and W. H. Coder of Ottumwa, and three sisters, Mrs. Nettie Meeker, of near Cranston; Mrs. Roy Welch, of near Columbus Junction, and Mrs. Lillie Hackett, of near Letts.

Harold Snyder, 73, formerly of Rt. 5, died Wednesday afternoon at the Muscatine Care Center following an extended illness.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Riley Funeral Home. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation is at the funeral home, where a memorial fund has been established.

The son of Leo and Ella Coder Snyder, he was born Dec. 27, 1908, in Muscatine. He was a life resident of this area.
His marriage to Marie Askam took place Nov. 21, 1936, in Eldon.

He was a life member of the Loyal Order of Moose. Mr. Snyder was a lifelong Fruitland Township farmer.

Survivors include one son of Muscatine; four grandchildren; one great grandson; and one stepbrother Virgil Fuhlman of Letts.
He was preceded in death by his wife in 1975, one half brother and a half sister.

Leo E. Snyder 85, of Route 3, Muscatine, died this morning at 8:15 at Muscatine General hospital following an 11 year illness.

Born June 17, 1882 in Cedar Township, Mr. Snyder was the son of Samuel and Sarah Jones Snyder.  He lived in Muscatine County most of his life.

Mr. Snyder married Ella Coder at Muscatine in 1904, she died in 1910.  He Stella Fuhlman at Muscatine in 1914 and she survives him.
He was a retired millwright and had been employed with the H. J. Heinz Co. and Grain Processing Co.

Survivors in addition to his wife include three sons; Harold Snyder, Route 5, Muscatine; LaVerne Snyder, Burlington, and Virgil Fuhlman, Route 1, Letts.  There are two daughters, Mrs. Forrest (Ethel) Townsley, Route 1, Letts;  and Mrs. Jack (Doris) Glisman, Detroit, Mich.  There are 16 grandchildren and 45 great-grandchildren.

Preceding him in death in addition to his first wife were a daughter, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 2 p.m. at the Riley Funeral home.  The Rev. Ralph L. Fisher will officiate.  Burial will be at the Oakgrove cemetery.  Friends may call at the funeral home starting Thursday morning.

A daughter of Launy and Allie Coder Van Horn, she was born March 4, 1884, at Letts. She had resided here the past 30 years. Her marriage to Burton F. Snyder took place Nov. 24, 1910 at Wapello. She was a charter member of the Letts chapter. Order of Eastern Star, and the Letts Methodist church.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, Van B. Snyder of Marshalltown and Alton D. Snyder of Glendale Calif., one daughter Mrs. John F. Kinneman of Arlington Va.; and seven granddaughters. She was preceded in death by one brother.

The former Marie Askam was born March 12, 1916 in Muscatine county, the daughter of Clark and Irma (Finley) Askam, and was a life resident here. She was married Nov. 21, 1936, at Eldon, Ia., to Harold Snyder.

Mrs. Snyder is survived by her husband, one son Sam H. Snyder, Muscatine; five brothers Herbert, Walter, Leo, Clark Jr., and Lester Askam all of Muscatine; four sisters, Mrs. Marlin (Dorthy) Heston, Muscatine, Mrs. Wayne (Florence) Thurston, Wilton, Mrs. Harold (Betty) Birkhofer, Muscatine, and Mrs. Lawrence (Wilma) Fiagle, and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents and two sisters.

PHOENIX, ARIZ -- Roberta M. Brockway Snyder, 81, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999.  Memorial services will be held Monday at Lamb Chapel, Grace Community Church in Tempe, Ariz.  Memorials may be made to Scottsdale Healthcare Hospice, 5111 N. Scottsdale Road, Suite 275, Scottsdale, Ariz. 85250 or the American Cancer Society, 2929   E. Tohomas Road, Phoenix, 85016.

Mrs. Snyder was born Aug. 3, 1918, in Conesville, the daughter of Marcus and Celia Brockway.  She moved to Arizona after graduating from Business College.  She retired from Pacific Motor Trucking in Phoenix after 40 years.

Survivors include a sister in law, Dorothy Downer of Muscatine, nieces, Judy Pickrel, Dallas, Texas, Louise Bridges of Scottsdale  and Charlotte Brewer of Tempe; a nephew Dwight Jasmann of Vienna, Va; cousins, Isabelle Buser, Roy and Rueben McCormick;   six great and eight great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by two brothers, Marvin and Lyle Brockway; a sister Mildred Brockway Jasmann; and her parents.

Samuel H. Snyder, 46, Route 8, Box 23, died early this morning at the Muscatine Care Center, following an extended illness.

Services will be Saturday at 1030 a.m. at the Riley Funeral Home. The Rev. Jay Tuner will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jeff Snyder, Randy Shouse, John Figg, Jerry Millage, Jay Snyder, Larry Snyder, Jack Burns and Bob Miller. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be Friday afternoon and evening at the funeral home where a memorial has been established.

Mr. Snyder was born April 28, 1939, at Muscatine, a son of Harold J. and Marie L. Askam Snyder. He was a life resident here. He married Nancy K. Figg, Oct. 4, 1958, at Muscatine. He was a member of the Island United Methodist Church, Elks, Loyal Order of Moose, the Iowa Association of Vegetable Growers, the 700 Club,, bowling club and was past president of the Muscatine Men's Bowling Association. He had been a farmer.

He is survived by his wife; two sons, Jeff Snyder, Muscatine; and Jay Snyder at home; two daughters, Mr. Randal (Julie) Shouse, Muscatine; and Jill Snyder, at home; and two grandsons.  His parents preceded him in death.

Van B. Snyder, 72, 1004 Sycamore St., died Monday morning at Muscatine General Hospital.

There will not be a memorial service,as the body has been donated to the University of Iowa Medical School.
Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Snyder was born Oct. 18, 1912, at Letts, a son Burton Faye and Lulu Van Horn Snyder. He was a life resident of this area. He was a member of the Elks Lodge and was a World War II veteran. He was employed at Stanley's in the accounting tax law department until his retirement in 1976.

Survivors include a daughter, Christina S. Rubenbauer, Marshalltown; one sister, Alice Kinnemann, Arlington, Va.; two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home.

FREDONIA -- Arthur (Tubb) Solomon, 73, of Fredonia, died Saturday night at his home.

Services will be Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, with the Rev. Richard Faris officiating.  Burial will be in Indian Creek Cemetery.  Visitation began at 4 p.m. today until time of service.  The Loyal Order of Moose No. 388 of Muscatine will conduct services at 7 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.

Mr. Solomon was born June 12, 1906 in Fredonia, the son of Ray and Ina Belle Lupton Solomon.  He married Arlene Swisher on Oct. 20, 1929 in Muscatine.

He was a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church and the Muscatine Loyal Order of the Moose.  He was employed for 30 years at the local Columbus Junction lumber company.

Survivors include his wife; and two daughters, Mrs Glenn (Deanna) McCleary of Muscatine and Mrs. Robert (Nela) Bennett of Conesville, and five grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by a grandchild.

CONESVILLE, Iowa - Vera Ruth Solomon, 87, Conesville, died Saturday, Sept. 7, 2002, at Mercy Medical Center, Iowa City.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. The Rev. Cathy Whitlatch will officiate. Burial will be at Conesville Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home. A memorial has been established for the United Methodist Church, Columbus Junction, and the Conesville Fire Department and First Responders.

Mrs. Solomon was born March 23, 1915, in Wilton, the daughter of Charles A. "Art" and Erma E. Carter Buckman. She married Burton F. Forbes Dec. 14, 1935, in Canton, Ill. He preceded her in death Jan. 27, 1964. She later married Ray "Barney" Solomon Jan. 28, 1989, in Bella Vista, Ark.

She was employed at Brooks Garage, West Liberty, for several years, the State of Iowa Drivers License bureau as a clerk for 13 years and was an Avon representative since 1948.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church, Columbus Junction, the Jolly Dozen Quilt Club and the Women of the Moose, Muscatine. She enjoyed sewing and making cakes.

Survivors include her husband, Ray "Barney" Solomon of Conesville; two brothers, Donald Buckman and wife Arlene of Conesville and Edwin Buckman and wife Kay of Joliet, Ill.; six sisters, Dorothy McLain of Fairfield, Viola Dotson of Atalissa, Ethel Haughton of Phoenix, Ariz., Maxine Lee of Cornville, Ariz., Norma Baughman and husband Ralph and Carole Ann Kacena and husband Stanley, all of Iowa City; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her first husband, Burton; and two brothers,  Charles and Lysle Buckman.

 Funeral services for Marguerite Sparkman, 80, were held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home.  Rev. A. A. Buntebach officiated. Mrs. Richard Dilts was the organist. Becky Turnis and Mark Clark were flower attendants.  Pallbearers were Jerry Thurston, Ronnie Ranberger, John Ranberger Jr., Fred Busch Jr., David Busch and Luther Kjolhede.  Interment was in the Wapello cemetery.   Mrs. Sparkman died April 27 at Muscatine General Hospital.

Elsie E. Spieth, 90, formerly of 1311 E. 4th St., died Monday afternoon, May 13, 1991, at Valley View Manor.

Services will be Thursday, May 16, at 10:30 a.m. at the Ralph J. Mrs. Spieth was born Dec. 27, 1906, in Muscatine County, a daughter of George L. and Phillipine Grimm Brei.  She married Carl E. Spieth on Oct 18, 1922, in Muscatine.

Survivors include three brothers, Earl G. Brei, of Muscatine; Daniel R. Brei of Raymond N.H., and Jacob H. Brei of Muscatine, and one sister, Inez Campbell, of San Diego.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1979, and two sisters.
She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church and a charter member of the Pilot Club.
She had retired from employment at Lawrence Tax Service.

SPORE, Margaret Elizabeth, 88, passed away on May 25, 1999. She was born in Wilton Junction, Iowa on January 17, 1911.
She moved to Davenport, Iowa and met and married Guy Wendell Spore who preceded her in death in 1995.

They had a daughter born in 1944 named Mary Karen who had health problems so they moved to Tucson, Arizona in 1950.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Mary Karen and Larry and a sister-in-law, Rose Margaret Zach of Davenport, Iowa, and many nieces and nephews.

She belonged to Olana Temple #131 Daughters of the Nile and the Order of the Eastern Star in Davenport and Honorary member of the Mariposa Chapter #31 Order of Eastern Star in Tucson.

Visitation will be Sunday, May 30th from 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. at South Lawn Mortuary.
Funeral will be Tuesday, June 1st at 11:00 a.m. at South Lawn Mortuary and Cemetery with the Reverend Martin Abraham of Trinity Presbyterian Church of Tucson, AZ officiating.

 WAPELLO-- Funeral services were held at  2 p.m. today at the Dugeon McCulley funeral home for Herbert Arthur Stanley, 58, of Wapello who died Wednesday at approximately 8 p.m. of self-inflicted gunshot wounds. Mr. Stanley was found dead at his home on Thursday.

Born at Riceville in April of 1910, Herbert Stanley was the adopted son of Oscar and Minnie Tyrrell. He had resided at Wapello the last 15 years. He was a farmer by occupation.

Survivors are one son, Charles Stanley of New London and one brother, George Stanley of Mount Pleasant.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Burial was at the Wapello cemetery with Rev. Buford Barnes in charge of the services.

Mrs Fannie Jane Stapleton. 70, died at her home on Orange street at 5pm, Wednesday after a short illness.

She was born July 17, 1863, the daughter of Cornelius W. Fisher and Mary B. Fisher. Her marriage to Dennis Stapleton took place March 31, 1883. Mrs. Stapleton was a member of the United Brethren church and of the Royal Neighbors and Rebekah lodges.

Surviving are her husband four brothers, Charles, Harry, Edwin and George Fisher, all of Muscatine; one sister Mrs.CC Smith, Davenport; several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by four sisters and three brothers.

The body is at the George Wittich Funeral home, 210 Cedar street, where it will remain for funeral services to be conducted at 2pm
Friday by the Rev. F. C. Scott pastor of the United Brethren church. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Miss Starke was born Nov. 13, 1906, in Muscatine County, the daughter of Jacob and Mary Brei Starke.

She was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church and the Telephone Pioneers of America. She worked for the telephone company for 43 years, retiring in 1967.

Survivors include a niece, Pat Crouse of Muscatine; several other nieces and nephews; many  great-nieces and great-nephews; and many great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her twin brother, Virgil; a brother, Ivan; and a  sister, Phyllis Toyne.

WILTON--Roy W. Staschke, 69, of Wilton died Saturday, April 2, 1994, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.

Services are at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Grace United Church of Christ in Wilton with the Rev. Christine Tucker officiating.  Organist is Deb Mohr and vocalist is Jacinda Voss.  Pallbearers are Bill Woller, Pete Reifert, Bart LaCrosse, Brian Koele, Norman Grunder and Doug Beinke.  Honorary pallbearers are Richard Morrison, Ray Brisker, Charles Schneckloth, Harry Luethye, Howard Maurer, Ken Lincoln, Ken Grunder and Jake Davies.  Visistation is from 4 to 8 p.m. tonight at the Lacock-Bentley Funeral Home in Wilton and one hour before the service at the church.  There will be a Masonic service at 8 p.m. tonight at the funeral home.  Burial will be at the Oakdale Cemetery in Wilton with American Legion Post 584 conducting the service.

He was born June 21, 1926, in Chicago, Ill., to William and Mabel Swartz Staschke.  He married Mildred Hunler on July 20, 1946 in Chicago.

Mr. Staschke was a veteran of the U.S. Navy and served in World War II and the Korean conflict.

He graduated from Tilden Tech.  He was a member of Grace United Church of Christ in Wilton, American Legion Post 584, Wilton, Wilton Masonic Lodge No. 167, Purity Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star No 365, a former member of the Scottish Rite and KAABA Shrine of Davenport.  He served on the Wilton Volunteer Fire Department for 35 years.

He is survived by his wife, two daughters, Joan (Mrs. James) Voss of Wilton; Merry (Mrs. Gary) Axel of Muscatine; five grandchildren, two great-grandchildren; two sisters, Lois (Mrs. Fred) Stortz of Ocala, Fla and Carol (Mrs. Robert) Ziwiski of Arlington Heights, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son John W. Staschke in 1991, and one sister, Janet Crumley in 1979.

The son of Andrew and Elizabeth McDaniel State, he was born Oct. 24, 1908, in Muscatine. He was a life resident of this community. His marriage to Genevive O`Brien took place Sept. 28, 1935, in Muscatine. He was a member of the St. Mathias Church and Knights of Columbus. He had been a board member of the St. Mary`s Cemetery Association and was past board member of Muscatine County American Cancer Society. Mr. State retired from R. J. Dick, where he had been employed in various management capacities for many years.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Thomas Earl of Coos Bay,Wis., and Martin Andrew of Muscatine; two daughters, Mrs. Jerome (Colleen) Augustine of Davenport and Mrs. Ronald (Ann) Wieskamp of Nichols; 12 grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Leonard (Margaret) Luedtka of Muscatine.  Two grandchildren preceded him in death.

Steahr, 55, of rural Maquoketa, died Saturday, Aug. 31, 1996, at the Jackson County Public Hospital, Maquoketa.  Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday at Carson & Son Funeral Home, Maquoketa, where friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today.  Burial will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine.

Services for Gladys M. Steinbaugh, of Gillespie, will be held at 10 a.m. Wednesday in the United Methodist Church there with the Rev. Dennis Hill officiating. Burial will be in Gillespie City Cemetery. Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday in Kravanya Funeral Home. The family suggests memorials be directed to the United Methodist Church Building Fund.

Mrs. Steinbaugh died at 10:14 p.m. Sunday, January 17, 1999, in St. Francis  Hospital.

She was 85 years old on February 25. She was co-owner of A&G Hardware in Gillespie before she retired. She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Gillespie,  the "K" Group, United Methodist Women and the Royal Neighbors.

She was born in  Conesville, Iowa, a daughter of Ernest and Hazel Adams Criger. She married Arthur  Steinbaugh on January 30, 1950, in Burlington, Iowa. He survives. Surviving also are a son,  Gene Smalley of Gillespie; daughter, Judy Smalley of Kirkwood, Mo.; six grandchildren and  six great grandchildren.

Dora Hazel Stender, 76, 1810 Mulberry Ave., died today at Colonial Manor Nursing Home, Columbus Junction.

Services are Saturday at 1:30 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. Don Campbell will officiate.  Pianist is Mrs. Donald Osborn.  Pallbearers are William Jeffries, Howard Knouse, Joy Stender, Grant Stender, Michael Sissel, Keith Hetzler and Delbert Melton.  Burial will be in the Illinois City Cemetery.

Visitation is Friday from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home where the family will meet friends 2-4 and 6-8.  A memorial has been established at the funeral home.

Mrs. Stender was born Aug. 10, 1909 in Illinois City, a daughter of George b. and Roxanna Cunningham Davidson.  She had lived here for most of her life.  She married Rudolph Stender on Oct. 19, 1929 in Tipton.  She was a member of the Park Avenue United Methodist Church, the Ladies Eagles Auxiliary and the Pochahontas.

Survivors include her husband; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Lucille) Brandon and Mrs. Jim (Frances) Thompson, both of Letts; and Mrs. Albert (Donna Jean) Pobanz, Geneseo, Ill.; nine grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two brothers, Manford Davidson, Rock Island; and Lyle Davidson, Muscatine; and two sisters, Mrs. Kenneth (Mabel) Canarr, Muscatine and Effie of Michigan.  She was preceded in death by two brothers and two sisters.

Rudolph Carl Stender, 82, formerly of 1810 Mulberry Ave., died Wednesday night at the Muscatine Care Center.

Services are at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  Pat Dilts will be organist.  Pallbearers will be James and David Brown, Gerry Zimmerman, Jerry Lichtenwald, Virgil McCormick and Howard Knouse.  Honorary pallbearers are Ernest, Flavel, Grant and Joy Stender, Richard Allen and David Wayne Pobanz.  Burial will be at the Illinois City Cemetery.   Visitation is from 3 to 5 and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Funeral home where a memorial has been established.

Mr. Stender was born Oct. 29, 1907 in Muscatine County, a son of Henry A. and Amanda L. Hebbeln Stender.  He was a life resident of the area.  His marriage to Dora Davidson took place Oct. 19, 1929 in Tipton.

He was a 44-year member of the Eagles Lodge, a 32 year honorary member of the Muscatine Rescue Unit.

He had farmed for many years in the Muscatine area on the Kaufmann farms, retiring in 1981. He was an avid horse trainer, shoer and did custom leather work for horse saddles and halters.

He enjoyed dancing and camping and the Lazy Z Roundup.  He was awarded the Lazy K belt buckle in 1988.  He was a member of the Illinois City Saddle Club for 27 years, a member of the Twin River and Wilton Saddle clubs and a Member of the Loyal Order of Moose.  He was of Methodist faith.

Survivors include three daughters, Lucille Brandon, of Columbus Junction; Mrs. Jim (Frances) Thompson, of Letts; and Mrs. J. Allen (Donna Jean) Pobanz, of Geneseo, Ill.; nine grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; four brothers, Ernest, Flavel, Joy and Grant Parker Stender, all of Muscatine; and one sister, Anna Knary, of Rock Island.  He is preceded in death by his wife on 1986, his parents, two sisters and one brother.

Mrs. Willie A Stewart, 87, died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. K O White in this city this morning at 1:30.

Willie A (McCormick) Stewart was born in St. Louis county, MO Nov 4, 1844 and was married to William A Stewart at Muscatine, IA in Sep 1862. Mr. Stewart died in 1882 at Farmington, MN. He had served as a captain of an Iowa regiment through the Civil War. Mrs. Stewart moved to Port Angeles in Oct 1896.

Surviving relatives are 2 sons, E S Stewart, Cordova, AK, and one daughter. Mrs. Kate O White of Port Angeles, and 6 grandchildren and 3 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held from the home of Mrs. Kate O White at 2pm Monday with the Dewey Lyden Company, funeral directors in charge.

Arthur E. Stigers, 89, of 2033 Dixwell St., Davenport, died Sunday morning at St. Luke's Hospital after an extended illness. (handwritten note: March 24, 1968)

Services will be at 3 p.m. Wednesday in Hill & Fredericks Chapel, Davenport, with burial in Blue Grass Cemetery. (handwritten note: March 27, 1968).  Visitation will be after 1 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Mr. Stigers was born in Muscatine County. In 1902 he married Mamie Cooper in Blue Grass. She died in 1941.
He formerly was a landscape gardener.

Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. William (Blanche) Heidt, Davenport, and a brother, Roy Stigers, Stockton, Iowa.

Services for Elmer H. Stone, 55, 1502 1st Ave, will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mr. Stone died in an accident in which his auto went off the road, struck a bridge and then was hit by an oncoming truck Thursday morning about four miles east of Muscatine.

He was born Oct. 15, 1921, at Muscatine, the son of Henry and Gladys Eichelberger Stone.  He married Phyllis M. Whitlow Dec. 7, 1949, at Muscatine.

He served as a sergeant in the U.S. Air Force during World War II with the 4th photo mapping squadron. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Moose and Eagles lodges.

Surviving are his wife; three sons, Douglas C. Stone of West Liberty; Roger D. Lane, and Richard E. Lane of Muscatine; three grandchildren; and three sisters, Mrs. John (Elva) McGrath of Philadelphia, Pa., Mrs. Mary Young and Mrs. Kenneth (Ida) Powell of Muscatine.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

Henry Walker Stone, 71, of 118 1/2 Iowa Avenue, died at 1:15 p.m. Thursday at Muscaitne General hospital after a brief illness.

Mr. Stone was a retired assemblyman at J.I. Case Company. He was born May 31, 1891, at Fredonia, the son of Charles and Mary Walker Stone.

Surviving are one son, Elmer Stone of Muscatine, three daughters, Mrs. Maurice (Mary) Young of Muscatine; Mrs. John (Elva) McGrath of Drexel Hill, Pa., and Mrs. Kenneth (Ida) Powell of Muscatine; one brothr, Frank Stone of Columbus Junction; two sisters, Mrs. Jessie Rahmiller and Mrs. Charlotte Grimes, both of Muscatine; six grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

The body is now at the Fairbanks home for funerals. Rev. Leo E. Jeambey will conduct funeral services at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fairbanks chapel. Interment will be at Indian Creeck cemetery in Louisa county.

Funeral services for Henry Walker Stone, 71 were held at 2 p.m. today at the Fairbanks chapel. Rev Leo Jeambey of the First Presbyterian church officiated. Mr. Eva Kramer was the organist.  Pallbearers were John Verink, Art Hill, William Mark, Omar Whitlow, Charles Rahmiller and Harry Eis.
Interment was at the Indian Creek cemetery.
Mr. Stone died Arpil 18, at Muscatine General Hopital.

COLUMBUS JUNCTION --Diana Lynn Story, 26, rural Columbus Junction, died Wednesday morning at her home.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church.  The Rev. Richard Faris will officiate.  Burial will be in Columbus City Cemetery.  Visitation begins at noon Friday at the Stacy--Lewis Funeral Home, where a memorial fund has been established.

The daughter of Richard and Wanda Lee Salemink, she was born June 27, 1956, in Muscatine.
Her marriage to Jeffrey Story took place Oct. 19, 1975, in Columbus Junction.  She was a 1974 graduate of L--M High School.

Survivors are her husband; one son, Jamey Jeffrey, at home; one daughter, Shannon Lynn, at home; her parents of Letts; one brother, Dennis Salemink of Elkhorn Neb.; and grandparents, Doris Salemink, and Mr. and Mrs. Ward Lee all of Muscatine Iowa.

DAVENPORT -- Walter Stoudt, of Davenport, died Thursday, Nov. 19, 1998, at Genesis Medical Center-West Campus, Davenport.  There will be no services. Weerts Funeral Home, Davenport, is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Stoudt was employed as an airplane flight instructor at Muscatine Airport.

He was born Aug. 19, 1909, in Davenport. He married Dorothy Loose in 1959 in Nashua, Iowa.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Suzanne Walker; six grandchildren; 11 step-grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; and six step-great-grandchildren.

FRUITLAND, Iowa - Dennis Stramer, 51, Fruitland, died Saturday, June 7, 2003, at Genesis Medical Center - West Campus, Davenport, following an extended illness.  Services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the Island Cemetery. The Rev. Sharon Phillips will officiate.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials may be directed to the American Cancer Society.

Mr. Stramer was born Nov. 16, 1951, in Iowa City, the son of Francis and Margaret Stramer. He married Jackie L. LaRue July 3, 1978, in Dubuque. She preceded him in death April 24, 1999.

He was a welder at Murphy Brother's Construction, Rock Island, Ill. He was a member of the Local Union No. 25, Rock Island.
He enjoyed watching racing and the Yankees.

Survivors include four sons, George Harris and Jack Harris, both of Columbus Junction, Pat Harris and his wife Cathleen of Minneapolis, Minn., and Arlo Harris and wife Chiffonda of Fruitland; four grandchildren; a brother, Tom Stramer of Anderson, Ind.; and a sister, Mary Nurre and husband Richard of Marion.   He was preceded in death by his parents and his wife.

Solemn requiem high mass was celebrated at St. Mathias church at 9 a.m. today for Mrs. W. P. Strain, of Schaller, Ia., the former Miss Laurentia Rolland of Muscatine, who died Friday of injuries sustained in an automobile accident near Iowa City.

Celebrant of the mass was the Rev. Father Grady of Schaller, assisted by the Rev. P. D. Moore of Grinnell, Ia., and the Rev. George Snell of St. Mary's church, Muscatine. The Rt. Rev. Msgr. W. L. Hannon delivered the sermon, and was in charge of rights at the grave in St. Mary's cemetery. Joe Rauch was master of ceremonies, Raymond Novak and John Roth were acolytes, and Robert Hines and Dan Ales served as thurifers.

Pallbearers were Leonard Fuller, John Van Lent, Arthur Umschied, Cyril Meyer, John Fifer and William Kook. Arrangements were in charge of the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home.

Members of the Joan of Arc court, Catholic Daughters of America, attended services in a body.

FRUITLAND,  Iowa -- Services for Jackie L. Stramer, of  Fruitland, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at Geo.  M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine.  Burial will be in Island Cemetery, Fruitland.  Visitation will be 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Stramer died Saturday, April 24, 1999, at University Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City.

She was a certified nurse's assistant at Muscatine Care Center.

Jackie LaRue was born July 13, 1947, in Iowa City. She married Dennis Stramer in 1978 in Asbury.

A memorial fund has been established in her memory. Survivors include her husband; sons, George, Jack, Par and Arlo; three grandchildren; her mother, Evelyn LaRue, Muscatine; a sister, Rosemary Anderson, Letts; and brothers, Gary LaRue, Columbus Junction, and Larry LaRue, Fruitland.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Ralph Strause, 58, Muscatine, died Saturday, Feb. 23, 2002, at Unity Hospital.

Services are 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Leif Pohl will officiate. Pallbearers are Don Massey, John Crook, Bob Smith, Mike Riggan, Joel Hetzler and Doug Drake. Mr. Strause was born March 7, 1943, the son of Weldon and Grace Steahr Strause. He married Mary Linda Edwards June 26, 1965, in Muscatine.

He was an U.S. Air Force veteran, serving from 1964-68.
He was a member of the Louisa-Muscatine School Board, 1976-85.
He worked for the Stanley Group, Muscatine for 29 years, receiving the service career award last year.
He enjoyed boating and spending time with his family.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Tim Strause and wife Carrie of Sedalia, Colo. and Terry Strause of Corbett, Ore.; a daughter, Tammy Paetz and husband Mel of Fruitland; a grandson, Josef; three brothers, Ron Strause and Gene "Butch" Strause, both of Fruitland and Randy Strause of Washington state. He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Mary Jane.

LONE TREE--Funeral services will be held 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Reformed church in Lone Tree for Pfc. Dale H. Strong, 23, who was killed in action in Korea, September 3.  The Rev. Otto Baumann will officiate and burial will be in Swank cemetery south of Lone Tree.

Sorden and Adams funeral home is in charge of the services.

The body of Private Strong is expected to arrive in Iowa city at 4:43 a.m. today.  The body was among those of the Americans who lost their lives in Korean fighting and are being returned to the United States for burial.

Private Strong, the son of Mrs. Sarah Strong of Lone Tree, was killed while serving with the 27th Infantry division.  The body will be sent to Lone Tree with an escort.

East Prairie--The body of an Illinois youth, missing since Feb.2, was found among the willows along the Mississippi River on the Missouri side southeast of Wyatt Saturday morning.

The body of Edgar Brayn Stroughmatt, 18,of Olmstead, Ill. was found 12 miles south of Wickliffe, Ky., on the Missouri banks by Kenneth Hall, who was in charge of a crew from the DeeVac Veneer Co., of Caruthersville, who was floating logs down the Mississippi.

Young Stroughmatt had been missing since Feb. 2 when he and his brother Ernest, 28, apparently drowned in the Ohio River after being on the river in a boat.

Ernest Stroughmatt's body was recoverd Feb. 17 near Olmstead, which is on the banks of the Ohio.

This makes the third tragedy in the Stroughmatt home since 1948.  It was that year that another brother, Earl, 24, also drowned.

Edgar was identified by  a large metal belt buckle and also the belt, which had shiny bits of glass adorning it.  The youth was clad in a pair of khaki pants with a pair of blue jeans underneath and had on a pair of leather hunting boots.
The body was identified by the father, Fred Stroughmatt, who is a commercial fisherman at Olmstead.

Other identification was found by Travis Shelby, Mississippi County coroner.  Shelby discovered an aluminum tag in pant's pocket of the victim.  It read "hook net or snag line tag, Kentucky, 1953, residence No. 63"  Shelby checked with Illinois officials and they verifed that the license number belonged to young Stroughmatt.

There was no evidence of foul play in either of the brother's drownings.

Edgar Bryant Stroughmatt, born July 10, 1935 in Iowa City, Iowa, is survived by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Stroughmatt; three sisters, Mrs. Alice Hooker of Paducah, Ky., Mrs. Violet Phillips of Muscatine, Iowa, and Joyce of the home; and two brothers, Clyde, of  Olmstead, and Fred Jr., with the army in Korea.

Graveside rites were held Sunday morning at Thistlewood Cemetrery in Mounds, Ill., with the Rev. J. Belknap officiating.

WEST LIBERTY--Robert Leroy Stuart, 76, died suddenly this morning at his home here following a heart attack.  He was a retired farmer.

Born on a farm near Oasis April 21, 1884, he resided in this community most of his life.  He was a former member of the West Branch school board.

Mr. Stuart was married to the former Myrtle Sheet September 10, 1907 at Tipton.  He farmed in the Oasis area then near Greene (Stockport) and West Liberty before returning to the West Branch community.  He retired in 1947 and moved into town.

Mr. Stuart was a member of the Methodist church, the West Branch Masonic lodge and Kaaba shrine, Davenport.
Survivors include his widow, two daughters, Mrs. Maxine White, of West Branch, and Mrs. Helen Romaine, of West Liberty; three sons, Robert, of Abbotsford, Wis., Kenneth, of Iowa City and Paul, of Ainsworth; 10 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren.

Also surviving are one sister, Mrs. Clara Soesbe, of Grinnell, and two brothers, Charles of  Iowa City, and Harold of Eugene, Ore.

Funeral services are pending at the Outhout funeral chapel, Iowa City.

Mr. Stuart died suddenly Wednesday morning.

She was born July 21, 1904, in Muscatine County, to John Thomas and Florence Hunter Verink. She was a life long resident of the area, and she was a member of the Wesley United Methodist Church.

She was employed as a cook at Cohn's News Agency, retiring in 1980.

Survivors include one daughter, Mrs. Walter (Mary) Breedlove of Muscatine and one brother, John H. Verink of Letts.  She was preceded in death by her parents and an infant daughter, Virginia Maria Stump.

LONE TREE--Mrs. Stella Stych, 80, died at her home here this morning following a lingering illness.
She had been a resident of this community since coming to the United States at the age of 17 with her family from Czechoslovakia, where she was born August 21, 1874.

Her marriage to Albert J. Stych took place February 15, 1898.  He preceded her in death April 27, 1936.

Surviving are four children, Mrs. Robert Hudachek, Lone Tree, Mrs. Ralph Bell, Nichols, Mrs. William Buline, Iowa City and George Stych, Muscatine; also 17 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

The funeral is planned for 2 p.m. Sunday at the Evangelical and Reformed church with the Rev. Otto Baumann officiating.  Burial will be in the Lone Tree cemetery.  The body will be taken Saturday afternoon to the Hudachek home, where it will remain until Sunday noon.  Arrangements are in charge of Soden and Adams.

Thomas Matthew Summitt, 20, of 1012 Lumbard St., died Thursday, Dec. 28, 2000, in Louisa County.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley Freers Funeral Home.  The Rev. Tom Parrott of the New Hope United Methodist Church will officiate.  Pallbearers will be Toby Starkweather, Doug Starkweather, Matt Reimers, Ted Hillard, Andy White, Cory Wagner, Aaron Starkweather, Brian Bermel and Brandon Garrett.  Honorary pallbearers will be Andy and Jason Summitt.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Muscatine County Humane Society or to the Chrons Disease Foundation.

He was born March 8, 1980, the son of Thomas C. and Julie L. Curry Summitt.  He loved to hunt and fish and loved his brothers very much.  He also loved his motorcycle.

He was a paramedic firefighter with the Muscatine Fire Department.  He loved being a paramedic and was a member of the Iowa Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Association.  He also worked for Johnson County Ambulance.

Survivors include his father, Thomas Summitt, his mother, Julie Reimers, and her husband, George, of Muscatine; two brothers, Andy Summitt and Jason Summitt, both of Muscatine his maternal grandparents, Donald and Yvonne Curry of Muscatine, and his paternal grandmother, Lorraine Summitt of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Kenneth Summitt.

George W. Sutton was born in New York City, N.Y., January 22, 1838, and died at Nichols, Iowa, September 20, 1913, aged 75 years, 8 months and 8 days. On November 25, 1863 he was united in marriage to Letitia Ames. To this union was born six children, five of whom are living. Chas. H., of Salt Lake City, Utah, Annie Aylsworth of Jamaica, Iowa, George W., of Kansas City, Mo., Henry G., and Dora Nichols of this place. William, the eldest child, died July 29, 1888. The wife and mother died February 17, 1906. He also leaves eight grandchildren and five great grand children, two sisters and three brothers.

Mr. Sutton united with the Christian church in his young manhood. He was a kind and loving father. "Daddy" as he was best known, was a good citizen, well respected by all who knew him.

He has made his home for a number of years with his daughter, Mrs. Nichols at whose home he died. In all his sickness during the last two years he was always patient, never complaining.

Four of the children were present at the funeral, Charles not being able to attend. The funeral was conducted at the home October 2, 1913, by Rev. S. J. Epler of West Liberty.

Letitia Ames Sutton was born in Pennsylvania June 2, 1846, died in Nichols Feb. 17, 1906. On Nov. 25, 1863 she was married to George W. Sutton. To this union was born six children. William who preceded his mother to the great beyond; Charley of Vernal, Utah; Annie Aylsworth of Jamaica, Iowa; Geo. of Kansas City, Mo; Henry and Mrs Dora Nichols of this place.

Mrs. Sutton united with the Christian Church in her younger days and her life continually showed forth the kind and loving service of her Master. While in health was always helping the sick and afflicted.

She died at the home of her daughter Mrs Dora Nichols where she had been helpless for the past eight months. Her children were all present at the time of her death except George and Charley. Her husband and children lose an ideal wife and mother and the community a much loved and respected citizen.

WEST LIBERTY---Raymond G. "Tony" Sutton, 50, 1422 14th St., Moline, Ill., died of a sudden heart attack Sunday afternoon at his Cedar River cottage east of Nichols. Services will be held Wednesday at the Snider Funeral Home. Rev. Frank Greenwood will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Ridge Cemetery. Born Dec. 31, 1929 in Chicago, he was the son of Townie and Frances "Dollie" Dunlap Sutton. He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II and for several years had been employed, at ATL Trucking in the Quad-Cities. Survivors include his mother of Moline, Ill., and one brother, Townie J. Sutton of Lake Tahoe, Calif.

Fireman Bruce Maynard Swain, 42, of Mounted Route No. 2, Davenport, died at 5:42 p.m. Sunday in St. Luke's Hospital, after an apparent heart attack. He had collapsed at the Central Fire Station.

Swain returned with other fire fighters to the Central Station about 5 p.m. after answering a call to extinguish a minor blaze. An ambulance was summoned after he complained of chest pains.

Swain had been serving as chauffeur at the Central House. He had been a member of the Davenport Fire Department since Jan. 26, 1953.

Born in Minnesota, Mr. Swain married the former Marian Hart in June, 1939, in Muscatine. The couple had resided in Davenport since 1947. Mr. Swain was a veteran of World War II, having served in the U.S. Army.

He is survived by his wife; four daughters, Mrs. Gene (Linda) Farnsworth, Davenport, Janice, Karen, and Ellen, all at home: a son, David, at home: three grandchildren: two brothers, Vernon Swain, Fredonia, Iowa, and Byron Swain, Tucson, Ariz.: three step-sisters, Mrs. Madelin Adams, and Mrs. Louise Dusenberry, both of Muscatine, and Mrs. Virginia Hopkins, Missouri: and three step-brothers, Donald Graham, Port Byron, Ill., Clifford and William Graham, both of Muscatine. He was preceded in death by a brother and a step-brother.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. Wednesday in the Runge Chapel. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine.

Clarence Svoboda, 67, 18801 - 322 St. West, Illinois City, died at his home early today.
Services will be Friday at 10 a.m. at St. Mary's Catholic Church with the Rev. Walter Helms officiating. Visitation is Thursday afternoon and evening at the Riley Funeral Home where a memorial has been established. Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mr. Svoboda was born Jan. 23, 1919 in Mount Vernon, a son of Frank and Elizabeth B. Mallie Svoboda. He had lived here since 1936. His marriage to June Klebe took place Feb. 20, 1946 in St. Mary's Church, Muscatine.  He had farmed in Drury Township his entire adult life and also was a realtor and real estate broker with the Weir Reality & C.I.F. Realty in Moline. He was co-owner of Superwash in Muscatine. He was member of St. Mary's Catholic Church and the Loyal Order of Moose.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Rodney Svoboda, Sperry; and Jess Svoboda, Illinois City; four daughters, Mrs. Carl
(Diana) Ritter, Illinois City; Mrs. James (Karen) Robinson, Parkersburg, W. Va.; Linda Svoboda, E. Moline; and Kelley Svoboda, Illinois City; and eight grandchildren.

Died, at his home near Nichols, Iowa, Jan. 8th, 1886, of consumption, Brother J. Swickard; was born april 12th, 1824; married to Margaret E. Nichols, Feb. 14th, 1855, who died Feb. 8th, 1879; married again, to Maggie Hines, Jan. 1st, 1880. To him were born ten children by his first and three by the second marriage, of which three of the former and one of the latter still survive. Brother John Swickard was a member of the Christian Church. Having his mind unimpaired to the last, he died with a firm hope of an abundant entrance into the very presence of a loving Father.

DIED, Near Nichols, Iowa, on the night of the 7th inst., of consumption, Mrs. Margaret Swickard, wife of John Swickard, in her 49th year. She was a native of Ohio and came to Iowa with her father, Samuel Nichols,about 1838. She was one of the first members of the Christian Church of Nichols. She was married to Mr. John Swickard in 1855 and was the mother of ten children, only four of whom survive her. Her funeral took place at the Christian Church in Nichols Sunday, Rev. Mr. Powell officiating. The deceased was greatly esteemed for her many good qualities of heart and mind by a large circle of acquaintances.

Died, at his home in Nichols, on Sunday, Jan. 17th, of consumption, Mr. S. M. Swickard. Sam was taken with hemorrhage of the lungs last June and since then has been fading away. In August last he, with his wife and baby, went up to Lake Minnetonka, hoping that the pure northern air might restore his health. Vain hope. He came back no better, and about the last of October he tried the sunny south in the desperate hope that this would help him. His brother Link, who is in poor health also, was with him. the boys came home from Texas on last Thursday and Sam died on Sunday. All that change of air, medical skill and kind attention of loving friends could do was done, but all in vain. Sam was stricken with death. He was buried on Tuesday with Masonic honors.

The church was filled with friends who came to show their last tribute of respect to him and show their sympathy to the heart-stricken widow in this her hour of sorrow. The coffin was carried to the bedside of his father, who wanted to see his boy's face once more. It is hardly hoped that Mr. Swickard can recover. Ere long he too will fall by the same dread disease, and be buried by the side of his wife and nine children who lie in one row close by the old homestead.

Sam was born in Pike township and has lived here all his life. Everybody knew him and everybody loved him. He was a noble-hearted man, pleasant in his business relations, kind and indulgent to his family, courteous and affable to everybody, honest as the day is long, energetic and obliging. His place cannnot be filled. Everybody misses him.

Carrie Ethel Denham was born in Muscatine County, Iowa January 4th, 1867 and departed this life June 14, 1942 at the age of 75 years, 5 months and 10 days, at her home in Avalon.

She was united in marriage to George W Swope February 17th, 1886.  To this union five children were born, the two oldest, Harry W. and Ethel M., dying in childhood.

She leaves to mourn her death her husband and three daughters, Mrs. Eva M. Hartley, Bogard, Mo., Mrs. Florence Terrill,Bogard, Mo., and Mrs. Leila G. Goff, Dawn, Mo.  Also 4 grandchildren, Margaret E. Derum, Long Branch, N.J., George E. Hartley, Bogard, Donna S. Goff and Peggy G. Goff, Dawn, Mo.  One great-granddaughter, John Elizabeth (sic) Derum, Long Branch, N.J.; also one brother, Will S. Denham, Columbus Junction, Iowa; also one half sister, Mrs. Nellie Walsh, Rock Island, Ill.

Mrs. Swope was a devoted and loving wife and mother; her entire life was lived for others.  A sincere christian, she was converted at the age of 4 years, joining the Methodist church at Lenox, Iowa, later joining the Christian church of Muscatine, Iowa.  Her membership was never transferred and while she said "my membership has ceased to be on earthly record it is recorded in heaven as I was a member of God's family."

Funeral from the M.E. Church Avalon at 2:30 P.M. Tuesday.  Burial in Avalon cemetery.  Mrs. Fay had charge of services.
