PATTERSON, Laura Lavinia (nee Nye)

Death Of A Pioneer
Mrs. Laura L. Patterson Member of the First Family to come to Muscatine.

Last evening about 9 o'clock at her home 1216 East Second street, occurred the death of Mrs. Laura L. Patterson, after a brief illness.  Although Mrs. Patterson was a lady 75 years of age she was quite active, and only for the past week has she complained of not being well and was on her feet a little over an hour before her death.  She had been living alone but of late years a daughter has been here and taken care of her.

Mrs. Patterson was an early settler in this vicinity having belonged to the first white family to locate in Muscatine county.  She was born in 1827 at Wooster, Wayne county, Ohio, and in 1834, when she was at the age of seven years she, with her parents, came to what was then known as Wisconsin territory.  Her father was Benjamin Nye, the first white man to settle in this county.  He with his family came to the mouth of Pine creek at Montpelier in 1834.  He built a store and carried on a trade with the Indians, exchanging goods for furs.  Mr. Nye laid out the town of Montpelier, naming it in honor of his birthplace, Montpelier, Vermont.

In 1845 Laura Lavinia Nyne (sic) was united in marriage to Robert H. Patterson, who ran a mill for a short time at the mouth of Pine creek, his father-in-law, Mr. Nye, having run both a saw mill before that time.  Later Mr. and Mrs. Patterson moved to a farm near Moscow, at which place Mrs. Patterson lived up to seven years ago, when she moved to Muscatine.  Mrs. Patterson lost her husband, Dec. 3, 1863.

Eight children were born to them, four of whom are now living and mourn the loss of their mother.  They are Charles M. E. Patterson of this county, B. F. Patterson of Los Angeles, California, Mrs. Belle Moore of Muscatine, and Mrs. Piney Gardner of Audubon Iowa.  Mrs. Patterson was one of the 50 year subscriber to the Journal, her husband having subscribed for the paper 57 years ago.  She was during her life had the opportunity of seeing many wonderful changes.  A tangled wilderness invested with roving tribes of Indians was here when she arrived.  She has had occasion to watch the development of the country and see the many advances made by civilization.  Religiously Mrs. Patterson has been a faithful member of the Presbyterian church for over 40 years.

The funeral arrangements are not quite complete as yet, owing to the fact family is waiting for some kind of word from the son in California.  It is probable however that the funeral will be held Sunday afternoon at 2:30 from the Melpine
Presbyterian church.  The funeral party will leave the house in Muscatine at 12:30 that afternoon.

PAUL, Cecil Henry
Cecil Paul Victim Hunting Accident

Cecil Paul of West Liberty met death in a hunting expedition last Sunday afternoon, when he was accidentally shot in
the head. He died enroute to the Iowa City hospital. He was twenty-three years of age.

Paul and Vernon Werling were together, and Werling’s gun, carried in the crook of his left arm, exploded, according to
statements made by him, hitting Paul, who was climbing the hill ahead of him. Coroner A. M. McCormick was called and
pronounced death accidental. Paul is survived by a widow and small child.

Cecil Henry Paul, son of Mr. and Mrs. Henry Paul was born near Ferris, Ill., June 26, 1910 and met death accidentally
Sunday afternoon, Sept. 24, while hunting, at the age of 23 years, 2 months and 23 days.

Cecil’s infancy was spent in Illinois, but when he was five years old the family moved to Cedar county. He grew to
manhood in the Rochester community, and on January 14, 1931 he was united in marriage too Miss Irene Schact of
Tipton, Iowa. To this union was born one son, Donald Henry Paul, aged 4 months. Cecil Paul is survived by his wife and
baby, his parents, Mr. and Mrs. Henry Paul, one brother Raymond at home, two sisters, Bernice, now Mrs. Abner
Peterson, and Mildred, now Mrs. Charles Reinhardt, both of Atalissa, two sisters Mabel and Frances died in infancy. He
also is survived by two nieces and two nephews, Dewey and Henrietta Peterson, Shirley Ann and Billy Reinhardt.

Cecil was deeply interested in farming and had his plans all made for starting out for himself this spring. A strong and
dependable young man, industrious and fine spirited. Cecil will be greatly missed, not alone by the dear ones of the
family but also by many friends in Rochester, Atalissa, Springdale and other neighboring communities.

I singeth low in every heart
A song of those who answer not
However we may call
They throng the silence of the heart
We see them as of yore
The kind, the true, the brave, the strong
Who walk with us no more
It is hard to take the burden up
When he has laid it down
He brightened all the joy of life
He softened many a frown
But it will be good to think of him
When we are troubled sore
Thanks be to God that he has been
Although he is no more
More homelike seems the waste unknown
Since he has entered there
To follow him when not so hard
Wherever he may fare
In spite of burden, sorrow, care
Whatever betide thy love abides
O God forever more

The funeral services were held in the Rochester church on Wednesday, September 27 with Rev. Otis Moore in charge.
Internment was in the Rochester cemetery.

PIEPER, August

Word was received in the city yesterday afternoon announcing the death of August Pieper, a well known former Scott county resident, which occurred at his home in Stockton Monday evening.

The deceased was born in Hamburg in 1813 and before leaving the Fatherland, he joined the Icarian community which settled near Nauvoo, Ill., but a couple of years later he left the settlement because of some dissensions and after a short stay at St.Charles, Mo., he came to Davenport in company with his wife.

While here he was connected with the Washburne hardware store for a time and later with the Beiderbecke-Miller establishment. Mr. Pieper was one of the founders of the Davenport Maennorchor and an active member of the Turner Society.

During the civil war Mr. Pieper enlisted in the "gray beard" regiment but never saw active service as they were not sent to the front on account of the advanced years of some of its members.

For several years past he has resided in Stockton where his death occurred. In 1858 his first wife died but he remarried and the present Mrs. Pieper survives him with two children, Mrs. Charles Beiderbecke of this city and a son, Adolph Pieper.

The remains will be brought to Davenport for incineration in accordance with the expressed wish of the deceased, and the funeral will take place from the B.C.R. & N. depot Thursday morning going directly to the crematorium.

PILKINGTON, Levi
PILKINGTON, Mary Wilson

Occasionally when two people have been privileged to share each others joys and sorrows for nearly fifty years, they are permitted to enter into the Heavenly rest with only a short separation. Such was the passing of our friends, Levi and Mary Pilkington. He was the only son of Joseph and Sarah Pilkington, and was born in Columbia county, Pa., April 24, 1840, and passed away at the home in West Liberty, Iowa, January 16, 1914, aged 73 years, 7 months and 22 days.

After his death, the wife was taken to the home of the son, at Centerdale, Iowa, where she answered the call to come up higher, on January 28, 1914, just twelve days after her husband. She was born in Columbia county, Pa., on June 6, 1841 being at the time of her death 72 years, 7 months and 22 days old.

She was the daughter of Reuben and Sarah Eves Wilson, and was married to Levi Pilkington, at her father's home, and according to the order of Friends, on the 17th of December, 1868, and two months later they came west locating in Illinois near East Jordan Meeting which was nine miles north of Sterling in Whiteside county. At the time of their arrival and for sometime after the meeting was held at the home of one of the members. The change from Eastern Pennsylvania to the prairies of Illinois was rather startling to persons who had grown up amongst the hills. The rigors of the western winters and the occasional poor crops did not discourage them.

During the eight years of their residence in Illinois, three children came to gladden their home - the daughter Ann and the two sons Alfred and Wilson. When the latter was one year old - in 1876 - they came to Iowa, living for six years on a farm three miles north of West Liberty. Their son Clark was born there. During the winter of 1882-3 they removed to Springdale, where the husband engaged in business. The youngest son, Arthur, was born there. The son, Wilson, having gone to Mobile, Alabama, in 1894, the parents and two younger sons followed in 1897. During their stay there ….. death in their …..February, 1899, the day before his 21st birthday. After spending four years in Alabama they returned to Iowa, locating in West Liberty ….. continued to be their home, with the exception of a few months spent at the home of the son at Centerdale, Iowa during the year 1908. That year their son Wilson died. They bore the weight of these sorrows with great fortitude, accepting what came in a spirit of resignation.

Both were birthright members of the Society of Friends and endeavored to live according to its teachings. They were constant in their attendance at the Meetings so long as health and strength permitted.

They were very deeply attached to their friends, who were sure of a cordial greeting whenever they visited their home. She had been an invalid for several years, but had kept about the house long after her disability had prevented her mingling with her friends outside her home. He was of an active temperament, and his life had been a busy one too busy for the frail health that had been his portion for a number of years - yet when the wife's physical disability increased he took upon himself the additional duties of nurse and housekeeper, until himself stricken with a fatal illness.

He is the last of his family, with the exception of a nephew, J.W. Eves, of Springdale. She leaves a brother and two sisters in Pennsylvania. Of their five children three are left, viz: Anna Branson, Montour Iowa; Alfred Pilkington, Centerdale Iowa and Arthur of Mobile, Alabama. All were present when the father was laid to rest. The daughter and oldest son were with the mother to the last.

Beside the relatives mentioned above they leave eight grandchildren and many other relatives and hosts of friends to treasurer their memories.

His funeral service was held at the Friends Meeting House in West Liberty at 10:30 a.m. on January 19th, Re… F.M. Dowlin of the Presbyterian church preaching the sermon.

The services for the wife were held at the home of the son at 1:00 p.m. on January 30th, Rev. Ross of the Centerdale church in charge. Burial in Oakridge.

Well known teacher of county passes away
Suffers Severe Attack of Appendicitis
and is Ill But One Week
Was Church Worker

Miss Grace, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Charles Purcell, living on the Burlington Road, passed away yesterday afternoon at 5 o'clock at her home after a brief illness. The cause of death was a severe attack to appendicitis which she contracted about a week ago. It was not thought that her condition was serious and the announcement of her untimely demise will be a shock to her large circle of friends. Miss Purcell was one of Muscatine County's most efficient school teachers and in the recent examinations received the only first class certificate issued. She was a member of the Methodist church and a faithful attendant at the Spangler Chapel. She was a cheerful worker and took active part in all the duties of the church.

 Born on Island

Miss Grace Purcell was born on Muscatine Island in 1882 and spent her youth in the vicinity of Spangler Chapel. Later the family moved to Burlington, but they soon returned to Muscatine and since that time Miss Purcell has made her home here. She is survived by her parents, one brother Louis of this city, and two sisters, Blanche, at home, and Mrs. Charles Roberts, of the Burlington Road. No funeral arrangements have been made yet.
