MAAS, LEWIS D., Of Chelsea, MI, age 85, passed away Friday evening August 13, 1999 at the Meadows of Silver Maples Assisted Living Residence Center in Chelsea.

He was born on May 17, 1914 in Farmington, MI the son of Emma (Dietrich) Maas and Herman Lewis Maas. He married
Marcella Schluchter in 1938 and she preceded him in death in 1992. Lewis worked as a lineman for Detroit Edison and retired in 1975 after 41 years of service. He enjoyed his cottage on the lake, history, music and Antiques.

Surviving are his children John Maas of Huntington, MD, Carol Moeckel (Wendell) of Grass Lake, MI, Gary Maas (Carol) of South Lyon, MI seven grandchildren. David Maas, Kathy Maas-Hebner (Steve), Mike Maas, Laura Moeckel, Matt Moeckel, Matt Moeckel (Denise), Clayton Maas and Barton Maas. Two sisters, Emily Sisson, of Farmington, MI, Doris Noller (Fred), of Muscatine, Iowa. One brother, Ed Maas (Olive) of Zephyr Hills, FL. One sister in-law, Ruth
Smith of Gaithersburg, MD, as well as many nieces and nephews.

In accordance to his wishes, Lewis had been cremated, and a memorial service will be held Thursday, August 19, at 3:30 p.m. at the Meadows of Silver Maples assisted Living Residence in Chelsea with Rev. Kathy Batell officiating.

In Lieu of flowers, in his memory take time to enjoy the things he did. Go to an Auction, refinish that piece of furniture you've been wanting to, go fishing, or travel even if its what he called a "Strawberry Shortcut" that takes you miles out of your  way.

James Charles MacKenzie, the one year old son of Lenora Titus andSean MacKenzie, died early Saturday at University Hospitals, Iowa City, of complications following a near drowning incident occurring at his home two weeks ago.

Services were today at 1 p.m. at the Riley Funeral Home.  The Rev.Gary Howse of the Foursquare Gospel Church officiated.  Vida Timm was organist. Burial was at the Crell (sic-Krell) Cemetery.

James was born Feb. 17, 1987 at Temple, Texas.  He had lived here for eight months.

Survivors include his parents, Lenora Titus Fuerer, of 526 1/2 Mulberry Ave., Apt 1;, And Sean MacKenzie, Garden City, Kan; a sister Amber Hope Titus of Muscatine; His paternal grandparents, Mr. And Mrs. Charles MacKenzie, Killeen, Texas; his maternal Grandparents Mr. And Mrs. David Titus, Killeen,  Texas; and his maternal step-great-Grandmother, Mabel Martin of Muscatine.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for James E. Madden, formerly of 1100 W. 3rd St., will be 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary Catholic Church, 417 Green St., Muscatine. Burial will be in St. Mary Cemetery. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine.

Mr. Madden died Sunday, June 28, 1998, at Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, after an extended illness. He retired in 1977 as a precision machinist at H.J. Heinz Co.
He was born Oct. 16, 1914, in Muscatine. He married Josephine Brewer in 1933. He married Sandra Blocker in 1968.

Memorials may be made to St. Mary Catholic Church or Simpson Memorial Home.

Survivors include his wife; his children, Joan Kuhens, Couer d' Alene, Idaho, Sue Kline, Muscatine, James D.,
Orlando, Fla., and Buster Blocker, Muscatine; 10 grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; a sister, Carmelette Buttles, Wilmington, Del.; and a brother, Henry, Cedar Rapids, Iowa.

LONE TREE --- Elva H. (Boyle) Malone, 87, of Lone Tree, formerly of Muscatine, died Thursday, July 30, 1998, at the Lone Tree Health Care Center.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. Scott Lothe will officiate.  Burial will be at the Klien Cemetery in rural Muscatine.
Visitation will be from 9 -11a.m. Monday prior to the service at the funeral home.  In lieu of flowers, the Elva Malone Memorial Fund has been established.

She was born July 30, 1911, in rural West Liberty, the daughter of Milton and Mary Elva Ranson Boyle.  She married Fred Sylvester Malone in September 1933.

She graduated from West Liberty High School.  She was a devout Christian.

Survivors include two sons, David Lee Malone of Iowa City and Fred S. Malone, Jr. of Cochise, Ariz.; two daughters and sons-in-law, Mary Ellen and Keith Fuhrmeister of Iowa City; Elizabeth Ann and Eldon Jarrard of North Liberty; 11 grandchildren, Bridget, Ramona, Kevin, Sean, Debra, Tammy, Michael, Karen, Michael L., Douglas and Turila; 12 great-grandchildren and one brother, Ranson Boyle, of Red Lake Falls, Minn.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters, Edna and Edith, and one brother, Myron.

Nora Manley, 68, was found dead in her home at 117 W. 3rd St., Monday.

Services will be held Wednesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. G. F. Kohn of the Trinity Episcopal Church will officiate.  Visitation will be 7 to 9 p. m. today.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to the heart fund.

Mrs. Manley was born March 16, 1916, a daughter of Harry and Mabel Page Meeker.  She was a life resident of the area.  She married Rodney O. Manley.

She is survived by two daughters, Barbara McClellen, Sycamore Ill.; and Sandra Yarnell, Birmingham, Iowa; one sister, Mrs. Robert (Mary) Zoller, Muscatine; seven grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren.  Her husband preceded her in death.

Mr. Manley, it was learned, was in the sleeper cab of the truck being driven by a companion, who was killed instantly in a head-on collision with a grain truck while vision was obscured by smoke from a passing train.  He was taken to a hospital where death resulted at 2:35 a.m.

He was born Feb. 10, 1911, being a son of Oliver C. and Sylvia Manley, and attended high school at Columbus Junction.  He had made his home in this community from about 1932 until going to West Liberty a few years ago where he operated the Twin Gables Service station, prior to moving to Milan, Ill., about two years ago.  He had made his home at Denver since Sept. 1, 1953.

The body is to be returned to Muscatine for burial.  Arrangements for services are in charge of the George M. Wittich Funeral home, and are not yet completed.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Alfred P. Manatt, of 1203 Vista Court, died Friday, Sept. 11, 1998, at his home. Services will be 11 a.m. Monday at George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Visitation is 10-11 a.m. Monday. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine, with military services by the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 1565.

Mr. Manatt worked 25 years at Hon Industries.

He was born Oct. 11, 1923, in Brooklyn, Iowa. He married Mona Hutchison in 1946 in Wapello.

Memorials may be made to the Alfred Manatt Memorial Fund.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Pamela Socha, Vickery, Ohio, and Sue Cox, Muscatine; four grandchildren; a sister, Eva Severns, of Florida; and brothers, Jim, Brooklyn, Iowa, and Lewis and Raymond, both of Davenport.

Services are pending at the Riley funeral home for Mrs. Hazel L. Mapes, 518 McKinley, who died this morning at Muscatine General hospital.

She is survived by one son Warren Mapes of Milwaukee; and two sisters, Mrs.. Lloyd (Leona) Gardner of Independence. MO.,  Mrs. Art (Ella) Mapes of Phoenix, Ariz.
Interment will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Funeral services were conducted at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home at 2 p.m. today for Mrs. Celia Mark, 58, who died at 8:20 p.m. Thursday at her home, 315 East Fifth street, after an extended illness.  Rabbi Alex Madenberg of the B’Nai Moses Synagogue officiated.  Burial was in the B'Nai Moses cemetery.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Wolfson, Mrs. Mark was born April 25, 1892, in Latvia and came to the United States about 1910.  Her marriage to Harry Mark took place in Omaha, Neb., June 15, 1914.

Surviving are her husband; two daughters, Mrs. Louis Levin  of Macomb, Ill., and Mrs. Joseph Stern of Oklahoma City, Okla.; three sisters, Mrs. Mollie Light of Chicago, Ill., Mrs. A. Weiss of Omaha, Neb., and Mrs. B. A. Simon of Los Angeles, Calf., and three grandchildren

She was preceded in death by her parents, one son in 1935, one brother and one sister.

Funeral services for Flora Mark, 64, were held at 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home.
Rev. James Leonard officiated and Mrs. Richard Dills was the organist.
Pallbearers were J. D. Walters, Larry Gray, Orland Preston Jr., Fred Haroon, Kenneth Phillips and Mike Middagh.
Burial was at Greenwood Cemetery.
Mrs. Mark died Sept. 16 at Muscatine General Hospital.

Elva Markham, 22 day old son of Mr. and Mrs. Elva Markham, died at his home in Winnebago, Ill., Tuesday after a heart attack.

The baby was born March __(date cut off page) and is survived by his parents and one sister, Hope, at home.
Funeral services were conducted at the Hoffman Funeral home here at 2:30 this afternoon b Rev. J. B. Randall, pastor of the First Methodist Church.  Burial was at the West Liberty Cemetery.

CONESVILLE, Iowa - Humberto Balderas Marin, 60, of Conesville died Friday at his home.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Visitation will be held on Saturday from 2-8 p.m., with a Vigil service at 8 p.m.

Padre Bernie Weir will officiate. A memorial has been established at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Conesville Cemetery.

Humberto was born March 16, 1942 in Jimenez, Mexico to Nicholas and Maria C. (Balderas) Marin. Throughout his life he enjoyed horses and also rode bulls. Humberto was a social member of the V. F. W. He enjoyed his pool and loved his family and friends very much.

He is survived by his wife Donna; two sons, Pat Marin and his wife Theresa of Columbus Junction and Max Marin and his wife Shelly of New Braunfels, Texas; two daughters, Maria Marin of Cotter, Soccorro Roman of Conesville; three brothers, Jesse Marin of Ft. Worth, Texas, Nick Marin of West Liberty, Ray Marin and his wife Hilda of Del Rio, Texas; two sisters, Natalie Martinez of Conesville, Soccorro Esquivel of Del Rio, Texas; and eleven grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his father and one brother, Lorenzo Marin, and one nephew, Tony Marin.

Dorothy Marshall, 64, Montpelier, died this morning at Mercy Hospital, Davenport.
Services will be Saturday a 1 p.m. at the Fairbanks-Lamb Chapel with the Rev. J. C. Foster of the Church of the Open Door, Fairport, officiating. Visitation is Friday from 1-3 p.m. and 5-8 p.m. at the chapel where a memorial has been established. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery. Montpelier.

Mrs. Marshall was born March 30, 1921, in Louisa County, a daughter of Winfred and Sarah Cozad Almandinger. She married James Marshall, Dec. 10, 1938, in Bowling Green, Mo.

She was a homemaker and a member of the Montpelier Senior Citizens and the Women of the Moose.

She is survived by one son. James Marshall, Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Sarah) Phillips, Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Donald (Donna) Dusenberry, Montpelier; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.  Preceding her in death were her husband in November, 1984, her parents, two brothers and one sister.

Muscatine-Enola Iota Marshall 90, died Friday March 12, 1999 at Davenport West Medical Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a. m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. Philip Sherwood of the Fruitland Baptist Church.  Pallbearers will be Mike Marshall, Mitch Marshall, Vince Marshall, Don Howard, Steve Howard, and Shawn Kerr. Organist will be Betty Lincoln.  Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 6:30-7:30 p. m. Monday at the funeral home.

Mrs. Marshall was born August 20, 1908 in Stark County Illinois the daughter of Orrie J. and Hazel D. Oakes Troxel.  She married Robert H. Marshall on August 21, 1926 in Muscatine.

She was a homemaker and lived in Muscatine all her life. She enjoyed cooking, made full quilts, loved to fish, and her family was very important to her.

Survivors include four sons, Robert Marshall Jr. of Duluth Minnesota, Edward Marshall of Davenport, James Marshall and his wife Patricia of Rural Illinois City, Ronald Marshall and his wife Kathleen of Ankeny, two daughters, Janet Howard and her husband Herbert of Muscatine and Sherry Baumgardner and her husband Cecil of Escondido California, 19 grandchildren, 41 great grandchildren and 22 great great grandchildren and a sister Helen Buffington of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two brothers, and an infant brother, and Harold Troxel, 12 grandchildren, two daughters in- law Angeline Marshall and Helga Marshall and a son in- law Donald Howard.

James R. Marshall, 66, Montpelier, died Saturday at Mercy Hospital, Davenport.

Services will be held Tuesday at 1:30 p.m. at the Fairbanks-Lamb Chapel. Burial will be in the Montpelier Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home.

Mr. Marshall was born Jan. 3, 1918, at Perry Mo., a son of Joseph R. and Sarah Krigbaum Marshall. He married Dorothy Almandinger, Dec. 10, 1938, at Bowling Green Mo.

He was retired employee of Fred's 66 Service in Davenport.

Survivors include his wife; a son, James Marshall, Muscatine; a daughter, Mrs. Ronald (Sara) Phillips, Muscatine; two sisters, Mrs. Leland (Peggy) Robinson, Woodriver, Ill.; Mrs. Jerry (Myrtle) Graves, Farber, Mo.; five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
 His parents and three sisters preceded him in death.

Fern Marston, 83, 1008 Spring St., died Tuesday at Bethesda Care Center.

Services will be held Friday at 10 a.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Carol Eastin of the Eliza Community Church will officiate. Visitation will be from 2-9 p.m. Thursday. The family will be present 2-4 p.m. and 7-9 p.m. Burial will be in the Buffalo Prairie Cemetery. Memorials may be left at the funeral home to the Buffalo Prairie Cemetery.

Mrs. Marston was born July 29, 1901, in Mercer County Ill., a daughter of Charles and Bertha Harroun Bear. She had been a Muscatine resident since 1962, formerly living in Eliza, Ill. She married Linwood Marston on March 11, 1922, at Rock Island.

She is survived by four sons, Elwin (Bub) Marston, Muscatine; Russell Marston and Charles Marston, Illinois; and Blaine Marston, Moscow; three daughters, Mrs. Thomas (Alice) Plemmons and Mrs. Delbert (Olive) Ketelsen, both of Muscatine; and Floy Lingafelter, East Moline; 17 grandchildren and 17 great-grandchildren.   She was preceded in death by her husband in 1975; one brother, and three sisters.

Columbus Junction--The funeral rites for Mrs. Thomas Martin, 612, who died at her home in Fredonia Thursday, will be held at the residence at 1:30 p.m. Sunday with the Rev. C. H. Hiller, Methodist pastor, in charge.  Burial will be in Lone Tree cemetery.

The former Alice Woodward, she was born in Kewanee, Ill., Sept. 14, 1879 and was married to Thomas Martin 45 years ago.

Surviving are her husband, eight sons, John of Lone Tree, Harold, William, Thomas and Kenneth of Muscatine; Arthur of Dixon, Ill; Eugene of Letts and Cecil at home; five daughters, Mrs. Elza Hamilton of Conesville; Mrs. Glen Yotter of Iowa City, Mrs. Frances Minear (sic) and Mrs. Donald Curry of Muscatine, and Elza (sic) at home; her father Richard Woodward of Kewanee, Ill; one brother Dewey Woodward of Moline and three sisters, Mrs. Bertha Harding (sic) of Kewanee, Mrs. Anna Bryner of Lorraine, O., and Mrs. Boyer of Salina, Kas.

Grandview--Betty I. Martin, 67, died Friday, Aug. 11, 1995, at the Washington County Hospital, Washington.
Services will be at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction.  Burial will be at the Grandview Cemetery.

Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. today at the funeral home with the family being present from 6 to 8 p.m.  A memorial has been established.

Mrs. Martin was born Oct. 15, 1927 in Bayfield, a daughter of Floyd and Wyona Orr Franklin.  She married William "Bill" Martin on Feb. 13, 1954 in Red Oak.  She worked at Keller Ladder in Muscatine until her retirement.

Survivors include her husband, William "Bill"; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Carol) Richardson of Wapello, and Shirley Martin of Muscatine; four grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; and a sister, Violet Martin, of Muscatine.
She was preceded in death by her parents, two sisters, Mildred and Lucille, a son Carroll and a daughter, Joyce Carpenter.

Mr. Cecil Martin, 48, 1110 Manor Drive, died Saturday.
Born in Kansas City, Mo., he came to Orlando in 1957. He was the owner of Martin's Mobile Home Park and was a veteran of World War II.

Survivors: widow, Linnie; son Douglas, Orlando; brothers John, Lone Tree, Iowa, Harold, Muscatine, Iowa, Tom, Ainsworth, Iowa, Art, North Liberty, Iowa, Kenneth, Muscatine, Iowa, Eugene, Orlando, Florida; sisters Mrs. Myrtle Hamilton, Conesville, Iowa, Mrs. Alice Yotter, West Liberty, Iowa, Mrs. Elizabeth Keef, Omaha Nebraska.

Mr. Martin was born in Kansas City, Mo., the son of Thomas and Alice Woodward Martin.  He was married to the former Linnie Barlow.

MUSCATINE -- David P. "Davy" Martin, 48, of 2551 Westgate Way, died suddenly Tuesday, Oct. 7, 1997, at his home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mathias Catholic Church, 215 W. Eight St.  The Rev. George Hoenig will officiate.  Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home.  A vigil will be at 2 p.m. at the funeral home.

David Martin was born on Feb. 15, 1949, in Muscatine, the son of Mike and Viola E. Creamer Martin Sr.  He married Shirley Daufelt on Jan. 25, 1974, in Muscatine.

He was a member of the St. Mathias Church.
He had been employed by the HON Co. for 23 years, and had served on the board of directors of the HOH Credit Union.
He enjoyed spending time with family and friends.  He especially enjoyed working on cars.

Survivors include his wife, Shirley; two sons and a daughter in-law, Shane and Cyndi Martin of Muscatine, and Shaun Martin, at home; his father, Mike Martin Sr. and his step-mother Loretta of Muscatine; four brothers, Mike Martin Jr. of Sioux City, Thomas A. Martin of Nipoma Calif., Jerry S. Martin of Muscatine, and Steven P. Martin of Naperville Ill., one sister Cheryl Bendele of Santa Maria, Calif.; three half brothers, Alan Patrick Martin, Jeffery W. Martin and Don Reiner, all of Muscatine; and one half-sister Patricia Ann Martin of Nichols.  He was preceded in death by his mother.

WASHINGTON, IOWA -- Services for Denia Martin, of Washington, formerly of  Ainsworth, will be 1:30 p.m. Thursday at Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial  will be in Indian Creek Cemetery, rural Columbus Junction. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today  at the funeral home.

Mrs. Martin died Monday, July 5, 1999, at Washington County  Hospital, Washington. She was employed as a bookkeeper at Martin Salvage Co. from  1964 to 1998.

Denia Krantz was born Jan. 12, 1920, in Buffalo Prairie, Ill. She married  Thomas Martin in 1939 in Kahoka, Mo. He died Oct. 15, 1998. A memorial fund has  been established. Survivors include daughters, Alice Martin, Washington, Judy Snider and Charlotte Salasgiven, both of Muscatine, and Sheryl Herlein, Topeka, Kan.; sons,  Tom and John, both of Washington; a grandson, Gary Herlein, who was raised by Mrs.  Martin and her husband Tom; 16 grandchildren; three great-grandchildren; and a  sister, Elizabeth Wemmie, Batavia.

She was a homemaker.  She worked as a bookkeeper for Martin Salvage Company from 1964 through 1998 until she and Tom retired.

Survivors include her daughters, Alice Martin of Washington and Judy Snider and her husband Doug, of Muscatine; Sheryl Herlein of Topeka, Kan; and Charlotte Salasgiven of Muscatine; two sons, Tom Martin and John Martin, both of Washington; a grandson, Gary Herlein of Washington, whom Tom and Denia raised; 16 grandchildren; three great grandchildren, and a sister, Elizabeth Wemmie of Batavia.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband Tom; two sons, Jimmy and Glenny; five brothers; and a sister.

TIPTON, Iowa -- Services for Edna A. Martin, formerly of Tipton, will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Methodist Church, Tipton. Burial will be in South Bethel Cemetery,  rural Tipton. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday at Fry Funeral Home, Tipton.

Mrs. Martin died  Sunday, May 7, 2000, at Mechanicsville Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, after an extended  illness. She was employed as a school cook from 1951 to 1980 and also worked at HiWay Gardens, Meet & Eat and Tipton Country Club.

Edna McAfee was born July 18, 1910, in rural  Tipton. She married Maynard Martin in 1932 in Rock Island.

A memorial fund has been  established. Survivors include daughters, Mary Vrooman, Mission Viejo, Calif., Roberta Hamdorf,

Eli W. Martin, whose home was at 103 Benham avenue, died at 4:40 a.m.today at 115 Clinton street, where he had been residing because of the flood situation in South Muscatine. Death followed an extended illness.

He was born Oct. 12, 1887, in Rock Island Co., Ill., the son of William and Armilda Thomas Martin. He had been a resident of Muscatine for the past 21 years and was last employed at the Peter Products Company.

His marriage to Alta Anna Howard took place August 17, 1908 in Muscatine. She survives alone with five sons-- Ralph, Ernest, Lloyd and Donald of Muscatine and Floyd in service with the Marine Corps; three daughters , Mrs. Genevieve Kallenberger, Mrs. Virginia Wilson and Mrs. Frances Morgan; one brother, Allen of Kirksville, MO; two sisters, Mrs. Iva Schley of Burr Oak, IA and Mrs. Mina Meuters of South Dakota; 28 grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one son and one brother.

The body was taken to the Fairbanks Home for Funerals and will remain there for services at 2:30 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Freeman L. Schmitt, pastor of the Lincoln Boulevard Baptist Church, will be in charge of the services and burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Princeton, Ill.--A truck driver from Muscatine, Iowa burned to death today when his tractor-trailer combination went off a highway, overturned and caught fire.

The victim, trapped in the cab of the tractor, was Elmer Martin, 38, of 711 Broadway, Muscatine, employed by the Hayes Trucking Co.

Police said there were no witnesses to the accident which occurred about 3 a.m. on Route 34, about three miles east of Princeton.  They said motorists who came upon the burning vehicle in a ditch were unable to approach the cab because of the fire.

Mr. Martin married Elsie Titus in 1945 in Santa Barbara, Calif.

He lived in Blythedale, Harrison Co, Mo (where he was born),  River Junction & Lone Tree in Johnson County as a youth, then in Fredonia, Louisa Co, also Letts, West Liberty, Muscatine and Conesville at different times.  He moved to Florida in 1959, but maintained a summer place on the river near Grandview in his later years. He served with the 182nd Americal Division Company E  in World War II, receiving many citations including the Bronze Star.  Gene was my father.

Glen Carl Martin, (illegible) months-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Martin, route 1, Eliza, Ill. died at Hershey hospital at 2:30 p.m. today after an illness of four weeks.

The child was born July 3, 1945 in Muscatine.  Surviving are the parents, two brothers, Thomas Duane and John M(rest illegible) and one sister Alice Marie, all at home.

The body is at the George M. Wittich Funeral Home where it will remain pending funeral arrangements.

Word has been received her of the death of a former resident of Muscatine, Mrs. Grace Martin, 85.
Funeral services are pending in Lynwood, Cal., where she resided at the time of her death. She died Wednesday morning at a nursing home in Lynwood.

She was born in 1889, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. A. J. Reeves. She later married Allen Martin.

Among those surviving are a sister, Mrs. Erma Weiersheuser of Muscatine and several nieces and nephews, also of this community.
She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and four sisters.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Harold Martin, 94, Muscatine, died Wednesday, July 17, 2002, at Lutheran Homes.

Services are 1 p.m. Friday at Hillcrest Baptist Church, 1613 Bidwell Road. Burial will be at Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.   Visitations are 2-4 p.m. and 6-8 p.m. today at Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory in Muscatine and noon until service time Friday at the church. Memorials may be made to the Lutheran Homes Activities Department, 2421 Lutheran Drive, Muscatine, IA 52761.

Mr. Martin was born on June 14, 1908, in Kewanee, Ill., the son of Thomas and Rose (sic) Woodward Martin. He married Pearl Atkins on Oct. 2, 1934, in Davenport.  He and his wife resided at 409 Clay St. from 1942 until they moved to Lutheran Homes in 2001.

He worked as a millwright for Huttig Manufacturing from 1939 until retiring in 1978.

He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church, formerly the Lincoln Boulevard Baptist Church, where he taught Sunday school for 43 years. He also served as the Sunday school superintendent and was a deacon of the church.

He enjoyed taking road trips and traveling with his wife. He was devoted to his church and loved his entire family.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Harry Martin and his wife, Claudette, of Moscow, H. Frank Martin and his wife, Claire, of Muscatine and Eugene Martin and his wife, Betty, of Pinkard, Ala.; a daughter, Jennie Wilson and her husband, Vernon Wilson Sr. of Muscatine; 16 grandchildren; 31 great-grandchildren; eight great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, William Martin of Grandview and Arthur Martin of North Liberty; a sister, Elizabeth Keefe (sic) and her husband, Charles, of Scottsdale, Ariz.; and a sister-in-law, Elsie Martin of Orlando, Fla.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a daughter and son-in-law, Martha and Mike Hute in 1966.

John Martin was born Oct. 13, 1899, in Kewanee, Ill., the son of Thomas and Alice Woodward Martin.  His marriage to Merle A. Schreffler took place Jan. 28, 1922, in Bethany, Mo.  He was a farmer and had lived all his life in Lone Tree.

Survivors include two sons; Herman and Buford, both of Lone Tree; five brothers, Tom Martin of Haskins, Art Martin of North Liberty, Eugene of Orlando, Fla., Bill Martin of Grandview, and Harold Martin of Muscatine; four sisters, Myrtle Hamilton of Conesville, Alice Yotter of West Liberty, Vesta Nelson of Orlando, FLa., and Elizabeth Keef of Omaha, Neb; and two grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his wife, two brothers, one sister and one great grandchild.

Mr. Martin had been employed as a truck driver for Roadway Express, formerly Poole Transfer.  He was a member of Teamsters Local No. 371 of Rock Island, Ill; and the John Harold Kemble Post 1565 Veterans of Foreign Wars, Muscatine.

He was a member of Teamsters local 371 in Rock Island, and a member of the John Harold Kimble VFW post in Muscatine.  He was married to the former Sharon Brick July 31, 1971 in Cedar Rapids.

Services: Brosh chapel at 10:30 a.m. by the Rev. A.T. Washington.  Burial: Mt Calvary cemetery.  Military graveside services will be conducted by Hanford American Legion Post, Cedar Rapids.  Friends may call after noon Friday.

Margaret Eiselstein was born Sept. 1, 1910, on a farm near Tipton. She married Walter Martin in  1931 in Tipton. He died in 1999.

Services will be Monday at 1:30 p.m at the United Presbyterian Church, Lone Tree, with the Re. Wilbur Nolte in charge.  Burial will be in the Lone Tree cemetery.  Visitation will be after 9 a.m. Sunday in the Sorden Funeral Home.

Mrs. Martin was born in Mt. Moriah, Mo., March 12, 1902 to Fred and Belle Elmore Schreffler.
She married John Martin Jan. 28, 1922 in Bethany, Mo., living most of her married life here..  She was a member of the Christian Church at Mt. Moriah.

Survivors include: her husband; two sons, Herman and Bueford of Lone Tree; two brothers, Glenn Schreffler, Mt. Moriah, Mo., and John Schreffler, Ravanna, Mo.;  and three sisters, Anna Hickman, Princeton, Mo., Lela Wright, Bethany, Mo., and Grace Zimmerman, Stockton, Mo., and two grandchildren and one great grandchild.

Lone Tree---Thomas Martin, 79, died at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Elza Hamilton, at Conesville at 1:30 a.m. today.
Mr. Martin was a retired farmer and had lived most of his life in Louisa County.  He married Alice Woodward at Kewanee, Ill. on Sept. 24, 1907.

Surviving are the following children:  John Martin, Lone Tree; Mrs. Elza Hamilton, Conesville; Mrs. Glen Yotter, Lone Tree; Harold, Bill and Kennith Martin and Mrs. Erwin Doerres(sic), all of Muscatine; Tom Martin, Letts; Arthur Martin, Iowa City; Eugene Martin, West Liberty; Cecil Martin, Peoria, Ill., Mrs. Charles Keys(sic), Omaha.  Thirty-eight grandchildren and six great grandchildren also survive.  His wife and one daughter preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Evangelical and Reformed church here at 2 p.m. Thursday.  Burial will be in the Lone Tree cemetery under the direction of the Sorden and Adams Funeral home.

Mr. Martin lived in Kewanee, IL from 1870 until about 1913 (abt 43 y), then in Cainsville and Blythedale areas of Harrison Co Mo until from abt 1913 to at least 1924; from there the family moved to River Junction (aka Stumptown), near Lone Tree in Johnson Co, Ia.  After this the family moved to Fredonia in Louisa Co.  He lived his last years with his daughter Myrtle in Conesville.  Thus, the statement that he lived most of his life in Louisa County is clearly not correct.  My grandfather.

AINSWORTH-Thomas Martin, 87, died Thursday, October 15, 1998 at Washington County Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Monday at the Jones Eden Funeral Home in Washington.  The Rev Ralph Draper will officiate.  Burial will be at Indian Creek Cemetery in Columbus Junction.

Visitation will start at noon Sunday, family visitation will be from 2-4 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.

Mr. Martin was born Oct. 25, 1910 in Kewanee, Ill, the son of Thomas and Alice Woodward Martin.  He married Denia Krantz on May 16, 1939 in Kahoka, Mo.

He was educated in Trenton, Mo.  He owned and operated the Salvage Yard in Haskins.

The child died Sunday, a few hours after birth.

The daughter of Wilbert and Alma Hindbaugh Lewis, she was born June 3, 1921, in Muscatine. She had lived all her life in the surrounding area.  Her marriage to Carroll Martin took place Feb. 4, 1939, in Clinton. She was a member of the Four
Square Church.

Survivors include her husband; one son, James C. of Letts, three grandchildren; and six brothers, Roy and Charles Lewis, both of Fruitland, Russell, Delmar and John Lewis, all of Muscatine and Donald Lewis of Letts; and one sister, Mrs. James (Delores) Curtis of Muscatine.

Mr. Martin was born July 31, 1909, in Kewanee, Ill., the son of Thomas and  Alice Woodward Martin. He was married to Margaret Cardwell for 20 years  and to Betty Franklin for 41 years.
He was an U.S. Navy veteran, serving during World War II.

He was a truck driver for 50 years and the last 11 years he worked for Bell’s  Ready Mix, Columbus Junction. He retired from trucking in 1971. He also  worked on the farm for Wayne Reed.

Survivors include two daughters, Shirley Martin of Grandview and Carol Richardson and her husband, Bob, of Letts; five grandchildren; nine  great-grandchildren; a brother, Arthur Martin of North Liberty; and a sister,  Elizabeth Keef of Scottsdale, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two wives; two sons, Vernon and Carroll Martin; a daughter, Joyce Carpenter; a grandson, Larry Edwards;  brothers, Harold, Tom, Cecil, Kenneth, John and Eugene Martin; and sisters,  Myrtle, Alice, Vesta and Lorene.

Note: this was my uncle.  I spoke to him a day and a half before he died and he told me the Dr said he might be going home on Saturday.  Sadly, this was not to be and he went to a greater home.  I miss him very much.

DAVENPORT -- Services for Julia S. Matelski, of Davenport, will be 1 p.m. Friday at  Runge Mortuary & Crematory, Davenport. The body will be cremated. Burial will be in  Letts Cemetery.
Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the mortuary.

Mrs. Matelski died Tuesday, July 7, 1998, at her home. She was employed at several area companies including the former Crescent Cookie Factory and Aluminum Company of America.

Julia Renner was born Aug. 7, 1912, in Gettysburg, S.D. She married Lewis Matelski in 1956 in Centerville, Iowa. Survivors include her husband; daughters, Marcella Larson, Niles, Ill., and Marlys Johnson, Peoria, Ariz.; six grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; sisters, Sylvia Batchelor, Davenport, and Dollie Hites, Albuquerque, N.M.; and  brothers, John Renner, Wapello, Iowa, and Harold Renner, of California.

Alice B. Mathias, 89, of 1804 Hammann St., died Thursday, Oct. 10,  2002, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday at  St. Mathias Catholic Church, Muscatine. Burial will be in Muscatine  Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. today at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine, with a rosary prayer  service at 8 p.m.

Alice Baker was born April 7, 1913, in West Branch. She married Jerry Mathias in 1935 in Cambridge, Ill. He preceded her in
death.

Memorials may be made to Saints Mary and Mathias Parish.

Survivors include daughters, Shirley Birkhofer, Mary Schaapveld and Kathleen McGlothlen, and son, Jerry, all of Muscatine; 10 grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; and sisters, Agnes Stroppel, West Branch, and Loretta Hylton, Tipton.

Services for Vernabelle Mathias, 77, Muscatine, will be 10:30 a.m.  Thursday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will  be in Muscatine Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the  funeral home. Mrs. Mathias died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Unity  Hospital, Muscatine. She worked as a bus driver for the City of  Muscatine for several years. She also was a foster parent.

Vernabelle  Brown was born April 18, 1925, in Muscatine. She married William  McCracken in 1941 in Kahoka, Mo. He died in 1943. She married Jerald  Mathias in 1963 in Muscatine. He preceded her in death.

A memorial  fund has been established.

Survivors include a daughter, Sandra Lessenger, Muscatine; sons, Rodney, Muscatine, Paul, of Minnesota, and Darrel Lee, Fort Smith, Ark.; five grandchildren, 10  great-grandchildren; and one great-great grandchild.

At 3:30 yesterday occurred the death of the little son of Mr. and Mrs. Peter Matzen aged four years and six months. The little lad was taken sick one week ago. The disease soon developed into croup which finally caused his death.
His parents moved here from Muscatine where the little fellow was born about three months ago and are living at 708 west Seventh street.

The funeral was held this morning with interment in Holy Family cemetery.

The boy suffered first degree burns to his back legs, arms and abdomen when gasoline was thrown on a bonfire by one of several children who had built the fire.

The child was born in Bloomington township on Oct. 25, 1988, the son of John Jay and Nellie Young Maylone.  He is survived by his parents, three brothers, John Jay Maylone, Jr., Edward E. Maylone and Kenneth D. Maylone; two sisters, Genevieve M. Maylone and Judy K. Maylone all at home; and two grandmothers, Mrs. Anna S. Young and Mrs. Gertrude Maylone, both of Muscatine.  His grandfathers and two sisters preceded him in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at the George M. Wittich Funeral home, with the Rev. E. W. McMurray of the Lincoln Boulevard Baptist church in charge.  Burial will be in the Klein cemetery.

Mrs. Ella Harper Maylone, 80, a life-long resident of Muscatine county, died at her home on Lake Park boulevard at 2:45 p.m. Wednesday. Mrs. Maylone had been in poor health for the past several years and had been seriously ill with complications since Sunday.

She was born July 30, 1858, in Lake township, the daughter of William and Mary Murphy Harper.  She was married to George C. Maylone, March 19, 1883, at Iowa City.  She was a member of the First Presbyterian church and of the Rebekah lodge.

Besides the husband, survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Stella Turkle of Atalissa, ia., and Mrs. Park Hubbard, of Detroit, Mich., two sons, John Maylone and Harry Maylone, both of Muscatine; a sister, Mrs. Maggie Enfield, of Californai; a brother, Charles Harper of Lake township; seven grandchildren and four Grea grandchildren.  Her parents, five sisters, four brothers and two children preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the George M. Wittich Funeral home with the Rev. A. L. Brandstetter, pastor of the United Brethern church, officiating.  The Rebekah lodge will participate in the services.

Eugene Maylone, aged 69 years, died at 2:30 p. m. Thursday at his home 909 East Eight street after a year's illness with complications. Born in Muscatine county Aug. 18, 1872, the son of John and Ruth Gifford Maylone, he had spent his entire life here.  He married Gertrude Essex on July 3, 1901.  Mr. Maylone was a member of the Methodist church.
Surviving are his wife, six sons, Joe and John of Muscatine Fred of Dorchester, Mass., Charles, Paul, and Robert of Muscatine, and 20 grandchildren.  His parents, one sister and two brothers preceded him in death.
The body is at the George M. Wittich home and will remain there for rites at 1:30 p. m. Sunday.  A second service will be held at 2 o'clock at the Bloomington Friends church with the Rev. Guilford Street, pastor, in charge.  Burial will be in the Klien cemetery.

Fred Sylvester Maylone, aged 37 years, died at 10 p.m. Saturday at his home, 708 East Fifth street, after a seven months illness with complications.

He was born in Muscatine County, Sept. 26, 1905 and spent his entire life here with the exception of seven years when he resided at Dorchester, Massachusetts.  He was the son of Eugene and Gertrude Essex Maylone.  He married Elva Boyle in Muscatine on Sept. 27 1934.

Mr. Maylone was a member of the Friends church, of the Masonic A. F. and A. M. lodge of Louisiana Mo., of the Hotline Engineer union of Dorchester, Massachusetts and was formerly a crane operator at the naval dry docks at Dorchester.

Surviving are his wife, four children, Fred Sylvester Maylone, David Lee Maylone, Mary Ellen Maylone and Elizabeth Ann Maylone all at home, his mother Mrs. Eugene Maylone of Muscatine and 5 brothers, Joseph, John, Charles and Paul Maylone all of Muscatine and Robert Maylone of Davenport Iowa.  His father preceded him in death.

Funeral rites will be held at 3:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home where the body is remaining.  Burial will be in the Klein cemetery.

George R. Maylone, 54, Route 3, Muscatine, died suddenly shortly before 6 p.m. Monday at the truck lot of the Poole Interstate Trucking Company at 807 E. Fourth.  Mr. Maylone had reportedly just stepped down from a truck cab when he collapsed and died.

He was born at Muscatine, Dec. 30, 1909, the son of John and Hanna Ray Maylone.

He was married Nov. 25, 1932, at Rock Island, to Mable Rodgers.

Mr. Maylone was employed as a driver by the Poole company.  He was a member of the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Surviving are his mother, Mrs. Hanna Maylone of Muscatine; a sister, Mrs. Dorothy Jackson of Muscatine, and a brother, Burdette L. Ray of Davenport.

He was preceded in death by his father.

The body is at the Fairbanks home for funerals, where Rev. Ernest Worden of the First Christian church will conduct, the funeral service at 2 p. m. Thursday.  Interment will be at Greenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Maylone had been ailing for a number of years, but had given no indication of feeling worse than usual previous to her being stricken.  Her demise is ascribed to senility.

She was born in Columbian (sic) county, Illinois, and moved to Muscatine county in 1859.  She has been a resident of this county since that time.  Her husband preceded her in death three years ago and no children survive her.  Four grand-children survive.  They are Mrs. L. R. Dunker, Mrs. Ed Herr, Mrs. Leroy McCoy and John Lang, all residing in this community.

The funeral services have not were in the message. (sic)

Mr. Maylone was a member of Kilpeck Community Friends Church.

Died at his home in Moscow township, eight miles from Muscatine, Monday May 2 1892 at 6:30 p.m. of grippe, John W. Maylone, aged 66 years.

John W. Maylone was born April 28, 1826, in Columbiana county, Ohio, where he engaged in mining and brick-making until 1856.  He returned to Ohio and came directly west again to Iowa and Muscatine county and located on the farm in Moscow township, where he had since resided.  He was united in marriage with Mary Frybarger, Aug. 28, 1856, who died June 7, 1862.  April 4, 1867 he was united in marriage with Ruth Gifford, who with two children living at home and two sons by his first wife, living in the west, survives him.

Mr. Maylone was held in high esteem by his neighbors and had filled various offices of trust at the hands of his friends.  He was a member of the M. E. church.

The funeral will take place tomorrow from the family residence; interment in the Klein cemetery.

Mabel E. Maylone, 74, Route 3, Box 418, died this morning at Lutheran Homes.

There is no visitation.  A memorial service will be Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. William Means will officiate.  Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Lutheran Homes and may be left at the funeral home.

The former Mabel Rodgers was born Nov. 27, 1913 in Muscatine, a daughter of William P. and Etta Eis Rodgers.  She was a life resident of the area.  She married George Maylone.  Her church affiliation was with the First Baptist Church.  She retired in 1876 after 25 years employment as an inspector for Bendix Aerospace Corporation of Davenport.

Survivors include her mother, Etta Rodgers of Muscatine; and four sisters, Thelma Hawk of Muscatine; Mrs. Francis (Violette) Rehbehn of Redinds, Calif; Mrs. Ray (Dorothy) Waterman and Darlene Broderson, both of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1963 and her father.

Prior to her retirement in 1969, she had been employed at Louis Rich.
Survivors include her husband, Paul; two daughters, A. Jean Kephart and Margaret Ann Maylone, both of Davenport; 15 grandchildren; one brother, James Mulvihill, of Wilton; and two sisters Alice Anson of Muscatine; and Lucille Edwards of Phoenix.
Her parents, two sisters and one brother precede her in death.

Nellie M. Malone, 85, a resident of the Bethesda Care Center died there early today, Thursday Jan. 21, 1993.

He was born May 4, 1912 in Moscow Township, a son of Eugene and Gertrude Essex Maylone.
He married Margaret A. Mulvihill on Nov. 4, 1929 at Carthage, IL.  They enjoyed a long and happy marriage until her death on Dec. 21, 1989.  They both were lifelong residents of Muscatine.
Mr. Maylone was a road construction worker from the age of 13 until his retirement.  His grandfather John W. Maylone, was one of the first settler's in Moscow Township.  He appeared in the Muscatine Journal on June 19, 1993, celebrating 1,000 years of wisdom.  He had a great love for his children.
Survivors include two daughters, A. Jean Kephart and Margaret Ann Maylone, both of Davenport; 15 grandchildren, 37 great grandchildren, six great great grandchildren, and a brother, Charles Maylone of Muscatine.
His parents, four brothers, and his beloved wife, Margaret preceded him in death.
He will be greatly missed by his family and friends.

Funeral services for Mrs. Mary B. McBride, widow of John A. McBride, who died Saturday afternoon of old age,
were held at 2  o'clock this afternoon from the home, 117 West Fourth street. The Rev. D.J. Ferguson of the United Brethren church officiated.
Burial was made in Greenwood cemetary.
The pallbearers were J.G. Dermedy, Fred Glesler, R.S. McNutt, J.B. Vanatta, William Cochran and A.J. Neidig.
Mrs. McBride, formerly Miss Mary B. Wood, was born Feb. 9, 1830 at Uxbridge, Mass. She married John A. McBride about seventy-three years ago, to which union five children were born, three of whom survive. Her husband preceded her in death thirty  years ago. The family moved to Muscatine about 1890. She was a member of the United Brethren church.
 She is survived by three sons. They are C.O. McBride, B.F. McBride and W.H. McBride, all of Muscatine.

Mrs. McCaw died  Tuesday, Nov. 5, 2002, at her home. She was a speech pathologist and worked at the Area Education Association for more than 30 years.

Susan Slorah was born July 2, 1947, in Des Moines. She married Harold Bridges in 1977 in Muscatine. He died in 1989. She married Clayle McCaw in 1992 in Des Moines.

Memorials may be made to Crossroads Workshop or Mississippi Bend AEA Speech Department in Muscatine.

MUSCATINE -- Deanna Rae Solomon McCleeary, 62, of Muscatine, died Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1999, at her home.

Services will be 10 a.m. Friday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. Kathy Moore of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church will officiate.  Burial will be at the Indian Creek Cemetery, in Columbus Junction.  Pallbearers will be Terry McCleeary, Raymond Kerr, Darrell Miller, Aaron Ryder, Chuck Smith and Troy Jones.  Honorary pallbearers will be Shane Spitznogle and Howdie "Paul" Knose. Organist will be Betty Lincoln and vocalist will be Sara McCleary.

Visitation will be from 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home.

Mrs. McCleeary was born Jan. 2, 1937, in Fredonia, the daughter of Arthur and Arline Swisher Solomon. She married Glean "Ike" McCleeary on May 17, 1959 in Columbus Junction.

She was a charter member of the Eagles Auxiliary where she past president, secretary, and treasurer, a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church where she was baptized and was a Sunday school teacher.  She attended Iowa Wesleyan College and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary.  Deanna loved playing bingo and going to the riverboat.  She operated Flowers of Rae making wedding and anniversary flowers.

Survivors include her husband, Glean "Ike" McCleeary of Muscatine; a son, Glean Dean McCleeary of Portland, Ore.; three daughters, Crystal Wade and her husband, Robert, of Muscatine, Michelle McCleeary of Muscatine, and Roberta "Brandy" Osborn of Edgington, Ill.; six grandchildren, Heidi Wade, Lace Wade, Tyson Wade, Jeremiah Kisner, Nicholas Wade, and Tracy Whitehall Burke; two great-grandchildren, Hunter Wade and Melissa Whitehall Burke; her mother, Arlene Solomon of Fredonia; and a sister, Nela Bennett, of Fredonia.

She was preceded in death by her father; one daughter Cheryl Renee; and one grandson, Matthew Kisner.

Jerry Wilkie was born April 20, 1921, in Shannon City, Iowa. She married Reuben A. McCormick in 1943  in Des Moines. A memorial has been established.

Funeral services for Roy Myrton McCormick, 99, of Cincinnati, Ohio and formerly of Winfield, were held July 13, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home in Muscatine. Burial was in the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Visitation was Saturday at the funeral home, prior to the funeral service. He died July 6, 2002, at the Marjorie P. Lee Retirement Center in Cincinnati. A memorial was established at the funeral home.

He was born April 7, 1903, in Winfield to Charles and Grace Brockway McCormick. He was united in marriage to Mabel Skrine on November 26, 1930, in Chicago, Ill.

He had worked as a manager for the Sears and Roebuck & Co. for many years.

He is survived by a daughter, Joan (James) Blough of Cincinnati; a sister, Isabel Buser of Columbus Junction; a brother, Ruben Jerry McCormick of Muscatine; two grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife and two sisters, Elizabeth McCormick Orris and Esther McCormick.

Furneral Services for James E. McCoy, 50, who was fatally injured in a tractor accident on his farm on Route 5 Friday morning (13 Aug. 1948), will be conducted at 2:30p.m.,Sunday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral home by Dr. Claude Cooper, Pastor of the Methodist church. Internment will be in Memorial Park cemetery.
Mr. McCoy was born on June 17,1898 at Austin, MS, the son of Clarence E. and Elizabeth Predmore McCoy. He formerly operated a barber shop and beauty shop in Michigan before coming to Muscatine 15 yrs ago. He married Grace LaTourrette on Jan 22,1923, in Muscatine. Mr. McCoy was of the Christian faith and was a member of the Moose Lodge at Moline.
Surviving are his wife; one son, Marvin D. McCoy, Route 5; one daughter,Mrs. Agnes Kile, Burlington; a half sister Mrs. Virgil Herrick, Battle Creek, MI. His parents, one brother and one sister preceded him in death.

 West Liberty, Ia., July 13--(Special)--A.H. McCLUN, 89, died at 4 p.m. Saturday afternoon at his home on North Calhoun street. He had been in failing health for the last two years, and for the last year was confined to his bed.
Mr. McCLUN was an active citizen during his years in business here. He served as mayor for several years, and for a number of years was president of the People`s State bank, and when the Carnegie library was built he was a chairman of the building committee.
He is survived by one son, E.A. McCLUN of West Liberty; one nephew, E.W. McCLUN, Long Beach,Calif., and one niece, Miss Carrie McCLUN of West Liberty. Final rites will be held today at 7 p.m. from the Snider chapel.

Muscatine- A. Louise McCracken 75, died Saturday, Jan. 2, 1999, at Lutheran Homes.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. Dan Schoepf of the Calvary Baptist Church will officiate.  Pallbearers will be John Mylott, Rod Butler, Jim Barnhart, Tony Harrison.
Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Monday at the funeral home in Muscatine.  Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.

She was born Feb. 8, 1923, in Louisa County, the daughter of Ellsworth and Dolly Spence Fry.  She married Orville M. McCracken on Oct. 26, 1940 in Davenport.

She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church in Muscatine where she served as a Sunday school teacher for many years.

Survivors include a son, William and hos wife Linda McCracken, of Muscatine; three daughters Phyliss Daniel of West Chicago, IL, Joyce Butler of Muscatine; Martha Marx of Muscatine; 12 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Gertrude Tutt of Bettendorf and Evelyn Conklin of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1991; one grandson Brian McCracken, one brother Thomas Fry; and one daughter Bessie.

Louis Avery McCracken, 20, a resident of Muscatine for 15 years, died at University hospital in Iowa City Saturday at 6:50 p.m.

The son of William and Margaret McCracken, he was born at Tipton, Ia., April 7, 1920 and lived there until the age of five when he moved to Muscatine.  He married Alice Titus in 1938.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter Margaret Alice; his parents Mr. and Mrs. William McCracken of Muscatine; three brothers, Alfred of Lone Tree and Orville and William Jr. of Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Elma Everett of Davenport, and several nieces.

Funeral services will be held from the First Baptist church, Muscatine, with the Rev. Vince H. Webster, pastor, officiating.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery here.  The body is at the McCormick and Sheetz, Funeral Home in Tipton, Ia.

Orville M. McCracken, 80, 409 W. 6th St., died Sunday, June 23, 1991, at the Muscatine Care Center.

Services will be at 1030 a.m., Tuesday, June 25, at the Calvary Baptist Church. The Rev. Nate Schroder will officiate. Pallbearers will be Casey Oberly, Rod Butler, Joel Daniel, Eric Daniel, Loren Jarrett and Brian McCracken. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation is from 4 to 8 p.m. today, at the Geo. M, Wittich Lewis Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to Calvary Baptist Church.

Mr. McCracken was born Dec. 15, 1910, at Tipton, Iowa, a son of William and Margaret Duncan cCracken. He had lived in the area for most of his life. He married Anna L. Fry, on Oct. 26, 1940, in Davenport.

Survivors include his wife, Anna; one son, William A. McCracken, of Muscatine; three daughters, Joyce Butler and Mrs. Donald (Martha) Marx, both of Muscatine; and Phyllis Daniel of West Chicago, Ill; 14 grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.  His parents, three brothers, one sister and one daughter precede him in death.

He was an Army Veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion.
He retired in 1976, after 35 years of employment at Wendling Quarry, as a heavy equipment operator.

Note from Susie Martin-Rott, webmaster: one of the deceased brothers referred to in this obituary was my uncle, Louis McCracken, who was killed in a farm accident.

Mrs. Anna E. McCullough, 87, died at 2:45 p.m. Friday at the Hershey Convalescent home after an extended illness.  Her home was at 315 Sycamore street.

The daughter of Hiram and Ann Gay Bliven, she was born July 24, 1868, in Louisa county.  She had been a resident of Muscatine county since 1891 and of Muscatine since 1922.  She was married to Alex McCullough Jan. 27, 1886, at Conesville, and for many years the couple lived on a farm near Conesville.  Mr. McCullough died in December of 1942.

Mrs. McCullough was a member of the First Methodist church and of the Martha class of the church.

Surviving are a son, F. G. McCullough, New Providence, Ia.; a daughter, Mrs. Lura Tipton, Muscatine; a sister, Mrs. Hattie Gelatt, Fort Madison; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, two brothers and three sisters.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Monday in the chapel of the Fairbanks Home for Funerals with the Rev. A. D. Steflenson, pastor of the First Methodist church officiating.  Burial will be in the Conesville cemetery.

Betty A. McCullough, 81, of 1222 Vista Court, died Tuesday, Oct. 15,   2002, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. Memorial services will be 2 p.m.  Sunday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine.  Private inurnment will be later in Muscatine Memorial Park.

Betty Ruthenberg was born Feb. 28, 1921, in Hartford, Mich. She married Lyle McCullough in 1940 in Muscatine.

CONESVILLE, Iowa - Gaylord Albert McCullough, 77, of Conesville died Friday Aug. 24, 2001, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City, following a sudden brain aneurysm.

Services are 3 p.m. today at the United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree. The Rev. Ann Rouse will officiate. Private burial of cremains will be in the The Conesville Cemetery.

Visitation is noon - 3 p.m. today at the church. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Conesville Fire Department and First Responders. George L. Gay Funeral Home and Crematorium of Iowa City is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Gaylord (sic) was born July 16,1924, in Conesville, the son of Harold Albert McCullough and Shirley Irene Hesseltine. He married Joyce Ann Thomas June 17, 1950, in Cuba City, Wis.

He graduated from Conesville High School in 1942. He then attended Cedar Falls Teachers College in Cedar Falls. He was a lifetime farmer west of Conesville.

He was a member of The United Presbyterian Church in Lone Tree. He was also a member of Farm Bureau, a 4-H leader in Louisa county, a coach and referee for basketball games and was active in the church.

Survivors include his wife, Joyce A. Margaret McCurdy, 82, of Alpha died at 3:15 p.m. Friday, Aug. 13, 1993, at Illini Restorative Care in Silvis.
Born Aug. 22, 1910, in West Liberty, Iowa, to Frank and Caroline Burkhart Elliott, she married Howard McCurdy on Dec. 25, 1930, in Davenport, Iowa. He survives.

Also surviving are one daughter, Mrs. Robert E. (Ann) Lee of Moline; one son, Brent of rural Alpha; one brother, Richard Elliott of Davenport; and two grandchildren.

She was an operator and supervisor at Northwestern Bell Telephone Co. in Davenport.  She was a member of Alpha Baptist Church and its Women's Society.  She was a member of the Henry County Home Extension, the Henry County Multiple Sclerosis Society and the former AlWood Women's Club. She was a member and past president of the Woodhull Chapter of the American Field Service and PEO Sisterhood, Chapter L, of Woodhull.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday at her church. The Rev. Calvin Lee will officiate. Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Monday at Peterson-Wallin-Knox Funeral Home in Alpha. Private burial will be in Summit Level Cemetery in Alpha.
Memorials may be made to her church or the Tri-County Ambulance Service.

Marvin L. McDonald, 52, Fairport, died Tuesday evening at the Veterans Hospital in Iowa City.

Services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Fairbanks-Lamb Chapel.  Rev. Donald Harding will officiate.  Burial will be in Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation is 7 to 9 p.m. Thursday.

Marvin McDonald was born April 28, 1927, in Brazil, Iowa, the son of Marvin O. McDonald and Elizabeth Frances McDonald.

His marriage to Mary Dipple took place Oct. 21, 1948, in Fairport.  He had been a member of the U.S. Marine Corps, and was a veteran of World War II.  Mr. McDonald was a truck driver.

Survivors include his wife; four sons, Gary, Randy, Douglas and Timothy, all of Fairport; three  daughters, Diana McDonald, Lori McDonald, and Leanna McDonald, all of Fairport; one grandchild and his mother of Fairport.

He was preceded in death by his father, one brother and a sister.

Mrs. McElroy was born on. 11, 1920, in Louisa County, the daughter of Frank and Emma Westbrook Fry. She married Robert E. McElroy on July 7, 1957, in Sioux City, Iowa.

Her grandchildren were her life focus.

She had been employed at McKee Seed and Supply and at Grain Processing Corporation.

Survivors include a son, Ron Roland of Odessa, Mo.; two daughters, Judy Otto of Muscatine, and Nancy Stolley of Milan, Ill.; six grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and five great-great-grandchildren; two stepchildren James and Cynthia McElroy of Mississippi; several step grandchildren and several step-great-grandchildren, two brothers, Marvin Fry of Enid, Okla.,and Alton Fry of Wichita, Kan.; and  two sisters, Mildred Friedli and Hazel Danko, both of Muscatine.

Mrs. Katherine McElroy, 78, of 808 Orange street, died at 7:30 p.m. Sunday at Muscatine General hospital after a brief illness.

She was born Aug. 30, 1883 in Muscatine county, a daughter of Julias and Mary Phoebe Irwin Welsch and had been a life resident of the community.

She was married to Glen McElroy at New Era in 1904. Mrs. McElroy was of the Lutheran faith.

She is survived by two sons, Vaughn McElroy of Bettendorf and Earl McElroy of Billings, Mont.; a daughter, Mrs. Raymond Tobias of Muscatine; a half-brother, Fred Welsch of Muscatine; two sisters Mrs. Mary DuBois of Ottumwa and Mrs. Bessie Cawiezel of Davenport; four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren. Preceding her in death were her husband, a daughter, two brothers and two sisters.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home by Intern Allen Wahl. The body is at the funeral home where friends may call after 7 p.m. Burial will be at Parr cemetery.

Robert E. McElroy, 79, of 38 Albany Park, died early Tuesday, Dec. 17, 1991 at Muscatine General hospital, following a brief illness.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Friday, Dec. 20 at St. Mathias Catholic Church.  Organist will be Vada Timm.  Pallbearers will be Al Willroth, Richard Noll, Bernard Noll, Steve Frye, Bill Frye and Gary Lee.  Honorary pallbearers will be Robert Jens, Douglas Stolley, Rick Crews, Barb Crews and Trisha Jens.  Burial will be at St. Mary's Cemetery.

A vigil rite will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Riley Funeral Home.
Friends may call Thursday afternoon and evening.  A memorial has been established.

Mr. McElroy was born July 31, 1912, in Muscatine to James and Nora Hill McElroy.  He was a life long resident here.
He attended the University of Iowa and was a letter winner in track.
He married Dorothy Fry Roland on July 8 1957 at Sioux City.

He was an active member of the University of Iowa Letterman's Club, a member of the Hawkeye Track Club and a life member of Elks Lodge No. 304 of Muscatine.

He was an avid fisherman.  He had worked for many years as a salesman for Lagomarcino Groupe Company and C. L. Mull and Son.  He retired from Grain Processing Corp. in 1977.

Survivors include his wife Dorothy; one son, James McElroy, and one daughter Cynthia Merritt both of Biloxi, Miss,; one stepson, Ron Roland of Springfield, Mo.; two stepdaughters, Judy Otto of Muscatine, and Nancy Stolley of Moline Ill.; 12 grandchildren, 10 great-grandchildren, and three sisters, Beatrice McElroy, Glenola McElroy and Grace McElroy, all of Tucson, Ariz.

He was preceded in death by one brothers and two sisters.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Angel McGill, infant daughter of Shane and Jessica McGill of Muscatine, will be 11 a.m. Thursday at Island Cemetery, Muscatine.

A memorial reception and luncheon will follow the service at Nichols Chapel Hill, Muscatine. There will be no visitation. Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory, Muscatine, is in charge of arrangements.

Angel was stillborn Thursday, Dec. 9, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Angel was born Dec. 9, 1999, a twin daughter of Shane and Jessica (Smith) McGill.

Nellie Walsh (Welsh) McGill, 92 formerly of 1517 9th Ave., Rock Island IL, died at 445 am today in Oak Glen Home, Coal Valley, where she had been a patient for two months.

Service will be at 3pm Friday in Wheelan Funeral Home and burial in Chippiannock Cemetery, Rock Island, ILL.

Nellie Denham married Harvey A Fulmer in 1885. He died in 1910.
On July 11, 1912 she was married to John Welsh in Clinton, IA. They farmed southeast of Milan, Ill, until moving to Rock Island in 1921. Mr. Welsh died in 1930.  Later she married to Mr. McGill. He preceded her in death.

She was a charter member of Do Unto Others circle, Kings' Daughters, and a member of Rock Island Chapter 269, Order of Eastern Star.

Survivors include a son, Ellsworth R. Fulmer or Rock Island, ILL, ; four grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and a brother Roy Denham of York, Neb.

She was born Aug. 19, 1876 in Illinois, being a daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clarence Hendricks.  She was married to Elmer McIntire Dec. 13,1893.
Mrs. McIntire was a member of the Cedar Valley Methodist Church.
She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Phillip Jarrett of West Liberty, Mrs. John Hendricks and Mrs. Hazel Geertz of Muscatine, five grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren, two brothers Leonard Hendricks of West Liberty and Ray Hendricks of Tucson Arizona,

DUNLAP, Ill. -- Charles DeWayne McKean Sr., 58, of Dunlap, died Friday, Aug. 18, 2000, at his home.

Private services were today at Woolsey-Wilton Funeral Home. The Rev. Rich Good officiated. Graveside services were at Conesville Cemetery in Conesville. The Rev. Ian McGinnis-Green officiated. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or  Grace Presbyterian Church.

Mr. McKean was born Aug. 18, 1942, in Muscatine, the son of Lyle and Edith Stafford McKean. He married Nancy Bell on Dec. 26, 1964, in Iowa City.

He graduated from Drury College in Springfield, Mo. He received an associate’s from Bradley University.  He received certification from the American Society for Quality Control Engineering.

He worked for Caterpillar Inc. for 33 years, retiring in 1998.  He served in the Marine Corps Reserves.
He was a member of Grace Presbyterian Church.

Survivors include his wife, Nancy; three sons, Jonathan and James, both at home and Charles McKean Jr. of Woodridge, Va.; a daughter, Julia Butcher and her husband, Steven of Tulsa, Okla.; two grandchildren; two sisters, Vicki Wilson and her husband, Robert of Mount Pleasant and Barbara Elder of Nichols; a brother, Randy Elder of Nichols.

He was preceded in death by his parents.

Mrs. Anna McKee, 72, widow of J.S. McKee, founder of the McKee Button Company, died suddenly at her home, 1222 Mulberry Avenue, at 10 p.m. Wednesday.  She suffered a heart attack earlier in the evening and failed to rally.

Mrs. McKee had spent the greater part of her life in Muscatine county.  She was born at Conesville, Jan. 6, 1866, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Albert L. Bliven.  Her marriage to James S. McKee was solemnized there in Feb. 27, 1889 and the couple resided there until 1895 when they established their home in Muscatine.  Following the death of Mr. McKee on Jan. 2, 1927, Mrs. McKee spent nine years in the east, returning to Muscatine two years ago.

Mrs. McKee received her education in the public schools at Burlington and was a graduate of the Burlington Conservatory of Music.  She was a longtime member and an active worker in the First Congregational church and was affiliated with several Muscatine clubs before establishing her residence in the east.

Surviving are one son, Albert S. McKee, president of the McKee Button company, two daughters, Mrs. Edward H. Barry of Worcester, Mass., and Mrs. Robert Richards of Muscatine, and five grandchildren, James and Theodore McKee of Muscatine, Edward and James Barry, and Marjorie McKee of Worcester, Mass. Three children preceded her in death.  A daughter, Elda, who died in infancy, and two sons, J. Harold McKee and Theodore B. McKee, whose deaths occurred in the past two years.

The body is at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home, but will be returned to the McKee home at 1222 Mulberry Avenue Friday morning.  Funeral arrangements are indefinite, pending the return of members of her family from the east.

Yesterday afternoon at the Hershey Memorial hospital occurred the death of Donald McKilligan, formerly a well known resident of Wilton, but for the past year a citizen of Muscatine.  He was taken to the hospital about two weeks ago and his ailment developed into typhoid fever, which in a very short time caused his death.

Mr. McKilligan was about thirty-three years of age and until about a year ago lived on a farm near Wilton, but tiring of farming moved to this city about a year ago, taking up his residence on East Hill.  He did various kinds of work while living here.
He leaves to mourn, besides his wife, a daughter of Conrad Fisher, two children, Myrtle and Marguerite, five sisters and one brother.  Two brothers preceded Donald in death during the past three years, both succumbing to typhoid fever.

The funeral will be held Saturday afternoon at 1 o'clock from the residence of Mr. McKilligan's father-in-law, Conrad Fisher, on East Hill, interment taking place in Greenwood cemetery.

 Muscatine, Ia., July 13.--- Mrs. John McKILLIP, 36, who suffered heat prostration Saturday afternoon in her home 10 miles west of here, died at 2:30 a.m. today in Bellevue hospital. She had been in poor health some time and Saturday was overcome by the intense heat.

She was born Jan. 6, 1900, in Muscatine, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W.S. MILLER and was married Sept. 16, 1916, to John McKILLIP. Services for Kenneth E. McKinney, 70, Muscatine, will be 1:30 p.m.  Wednesday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial  will be in Muscatine Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. McKinney died Saturday, Nov. 2, 2002, at Muscatine Care Center. He was employed as an automobile mechanic, first at
Hawk Motors at age 18. He later opened Ken’s Service Center which he owned and operated for many years.

He was born April 26, 1932, in Chicago.

A memorial fund has been established. Survivors include his spouse, Karen Hogan, Muscatine; daughters, Teri McKinney, of Florida, Deb Lorenz, Cedar Rapids, Julie Fisher, Muscatine, Jeanne Staats, Muscatine, and Kim Jones; son, Murray Hogan, Muscatine; 11  grandchildren; sisters, Kathy Long and Ida Lance, both of Sigourney;  and brother, Wesley Smich.

The Muscatine Journal says an Irishman named Andrew McLaughlin was instantly killed at 12 o'clock last Saturday night, by falling to the bottom of a coal pit at Wm. Beany's coal mines, some seven miles from that city, on the opposite side of the river.

He was being drawn up from the pit by a windlass, and discovering when nearly to the top that the bucket was unfastened, he grasp the chain with his hands and was thus drawn up to the surface, but as soon as he loosened one hand to take hold of assistance offered him by Mr. John Ray, the other hand also lost its hold, and he fell to the bottom --80 feet--and he was instantly killed.

He was about thirty years of age, and leaves a wife and two adopted children.

She was born March 21, 1904 in Buffalo Prairie Township, the daughter of Ernest and Magie Kell Vanatta.

She married Westly (Wesley) Davidson in 1933.  He died in 1959.  Then she married Lyle McNeal in 1969 in Nashua, Iowa.

She was a beautician for Reeves Barber and Beauty Shop in Muscatine for 25 years retiring in 1955.  She enjoyed
working in her flower garden.

She is survived by her husband Lyle, and several nieces and nephews and was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, two sisters and two brothers.

Lowell Grant McVay, 84, of West Liberty, died Friday, January 29, 1999, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Tuesday, February 2, at the Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, with Rev. Frank Schultz officiating. Organist was Betsey Neipert. Casket bearers were John Neipert, Lynn Longstreth, Lance Longstreth, Jayson McVay, Kelly McVay, and Tommy Ruble. Burial was in the Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty.

A memorial fund has been established for the West Liberty Public Library.

Mr. McVay was born July 11, 1914, in What Cheer, Iowa, the son of Edward and Anna Coghlan McVay. He was married to Virginia Ladely on December 19, 1936, in New Sharon, Iowa. He had been employed at the Walnut Grove Company as a semi-truck driver for over 27 years, retiring in 1980.

Survivors include his wife, Virginia McVay; two daughters, Pamela McVay and Connie Neipert (husband, Richard), all of West Liberty; a son, Terry McVay (wife, Pamela) of West Liberty; four grandchildren, John Neipert, Lynn Longstreth, Jayson McVay and Kelly McVay; a great-granddaughter, Taylor Longstreth; and a special grandchild, Tommy Ruble. He was preceded in death by two brothers; and three sisters.

Carl W. Meeker, 79, a former resident of this community, died at 10 p.m. Wednesday at Independence, Ia., after an extended illness.

Born in Seventy-Six township Jan. 21, 1872, Mr. Meeker was the son of John W. and Harriet Gates Meeker.  He moved to Waterloo several years ago to make his home with his son, Harold Meeker.

He married Rachel Fry and the couple engaged in farming.  He was a member of the United Brethren church at Cranston.

Surviving are two sons, Harold Meeker of Waterloo, and Ralph Meeker of Bettendorf; a daughter Mrs. Raymond Bothell of Iowa City; a sister Miss Myrtle Meeker, Chicago; and three grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, a daughter, a son, five brothers and a sister.

The body will arrive later today at the George m. Wittich Funeral home.  Funeral arrangements are incomplete.

Mrs. Effie A. Meeker, 87, of Rt. 1, Letts, died at 11:12 p.m. Tuesday at Muscatine General Hospital.

A daughter of Millard and Kate Noble Shires, she was born Nov. 11, 1889, in Mercer County, Ill.  Her marriage to W. Ernest Meeker took place March 12, 1913, in Muscatine.  She lived most of her life around the Cranston area and was a member of the Cranston church.

Surviving are her husband; one son, Joseph W., Letts; two daughters, Mrs. Max (Geraldine) Schomberg, Letts, and Mrs. Donald S. (Martha Jean) Nichols, West Liberty; five grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; and one sister; Mrs. Glenn (Katha) Robbins, Mt. View, Calif.

She was preceded in death by her parents, three brothers and one sister.

Services will be at 10;30 a.m. Saturday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home.  Burial will be at the Oak Grove Cemetery, rural Cranston.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home where a memorial has been established.

Mr. Meeker was born Sept. 1, 1908, in Radcliff, Ark., to Chester and Bessie Phillips Meeker.
He married Florence M. Brookhart on Dec. 3, 1930, in Fort Madison.

He had worked as a farm hand in the Letts area his entire adult life.

Survivors include his wife, Florence; two daughters, Audrey Kropf of Cranston, and Mrs. Elwood (Beverly) Clark of Muscatine; two sons, Donald Meeker of Letts, and Charles Meeker of Conesville; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren, a half-brother and sister, Kenneth Meeker of Cedar Rapids,  and Lois Feming of Osceola.

Also surviving are special family friends Tommie Jane Lyle and daughter, Stefnee.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a son, Harlan, and a sister. Vivian Van Dyke.

Mrs. Meeker was born Oct. 17, 1908, at Letts, a daughter of Albert and Jessie Gates Brookhart.  Her marriage to Fay William Meeker took place on Dec. 3, 1930, in Fort Madison.

She had been a homemaker, and had lived her entire life in the area.

Survivors include her children, Audrey Kropf of Letts, Mrs. Elwood (Beverly) Clark of Muscatine, Donald Meeker of Letts, and Charles Meeker of Conesville; nine grandchildren, 11 great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mary Hafner of Letts.

She was preceded in death by her husband on Sept. 22, 1995, her parents, a son Harlan, and a brother Leo Brookhart.

Georgia Mabel Meeker, 89, of 1119 Mulberry, died at 830 p.m. Tuesday at Muscatine General Hospital after an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home. Rev. Wesley Snodgrass will officiate. Burial will be in Cranston cemetery.

Visitation will begin at noon on Thursday at the funeral home.

Born Aug. 3, 1892 in Gage county, Neb., she was the daughter of John and Iowa Ellis Page. Her marriage to Harry C. Meeker took place on May 23, 1915 at Anderson, Iowa.

Mrs. Meeker was a member of the First Presbyterian Church at the Rose Croix Shrine. She came to the Cranston community in 1914 as a school teacher. She had resided at the Julia Elizabeth Home for the past 10 years.

Survivors include two daughters Mrs. Nora Manley Meeker, and Mrs. Robert (Mary) Zoller both of Muscatine; two sisters, Mrs. Charles (Vera) Henderson, Sidney, and Mrs. Harry (Grace) Gleason, Red Oak; also five grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and four sisters.

Services will be held at 130 p.m. Friday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation begins Thursday at the funeral home.

Harlen Meeker was born Nov. 24, 1932, in Fredonia, Iowa, the son of Fay and Florence Brookhart Meeker. He had been in the Air Force from 1951 to 1955 and had been employed for the past 14 years as a receiving clerk at Carver Pump Co.

Survivors include one son, Harlen F. Meeker Jr. at home; his parents of Cranston; two brothers, Donald and Charles both of Letts; and two sisters, Mrs. Audrey Kropf and Mrs. Elwood (Beverly) Clark both of Letts.

Harriett Gates was born near Lowell, Wisconsin, April 13, 1849, fell a sleep in the arms of the Loving Savior at Cranston, Iowa, Jan. 8th, 1916, age 66 years, 8 months, 26 days.  She came with her parents to Cedar township about the year of 52 and has spent practically all of her life in Muscatine county.

She was married to Warren Meeker, March 1, 1866, and had she lived until the coming March she and her husband would have celebrated their fiftieth wedding anniversary.

To this union were born eight children, two of the preceding their mother to the land beyond the blue in their infancy the others are as follows;  Carl W. of Ardon, Howard A. of Cedar Rapids, Mary Myrtle of Cranston, W. Edgar of Clinton, George W. of Tabernash, Colorado, and Harry C. of Arden.  Besides the children she leaves a loving husband who feels the stress of many years of labor and service resting heavily upon his shoulders, a brother Horatio N. Gates a merchant of Cranston; a half brother Cylas R. Gates of Long Beach, Cal., 15 grandchildren, other relatives and a host of friends to mourn her death.

She contracted pneumonia which resisted the untiring efforts of loving hands and medical skill, so with aching hearts and tear-dimmed eyes, she closed her eyes in that last long sleep, with the blessed hope of meeting beyond this veil of tears.

She united, with the Bretheren church at Cranston about the year of '70 and while she never made any demonstrations with her religion she was content to serve in the home and do such little Christian duties that fell to her lot to preform.

Already her many friends and neighbors know the life she lived so it is sufficient to say she was a kind neighbor, a loving and faithful wife, and noble mother and only heaven can reveal the true worth of her life here on earth.

Funeral rites for Harry Cone Meeker, 62, whose sudden death occurred at 730 p.m. Saturday at his home 407 East Fourth street, will be conducted at 3 p.m. Tuesday at the First Presbyterian church by Dr. Joseph Kennedy, pastor. Interment will be in the Cranston cemetery.

Mr. Meeker who had been custodian at the Muscatine county courthouse for 20 years, was taken suddenly ill with a heart ailment on his way home Saturday night, death occurring a short time later.

He was born in Seventy-Six township on Aug. 13, 1886, the son of John Warren and Harriett Gates Meeker. He had resided in the Cranston community before coming to Muscatine 20 years ago. He married Mabel Page on May 23, 1915, at Anderson, Ia. Mr. Meeker was a member of the First Presbyterian church, of Iowa lodge No. 2, A. F. and A. M., was assistant patron of the Order of Eastern Star and watchman of shepherds of the White Shrine of the Masonic Order.

He is survived by his wife; two daughters, Mrs. Rodney Manley, West Liberty, and Mrs. Robert Zoller, Muscatine; one brother Carl W. Meeker, Muscatine; one sister, Miss Myrtle Meeker, Chicago; four grandchildren. His parents, four brothers and one sister preceded him in death.

The body is at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home and will remain there until services.

Mrs. Nellie Fry Meeker, 77, died at her home, 710 Colver street, at 9:30 a.m. Sunday after a short illness with a heart ailment.

The daughter of Cyrus and Margaret Brookhart Fry, she was born in Muscatine county on July 10, 1871.  Her marriage to Joseph P. Meeker took place on Jan. 12, 1898, at Letts.  Mrs. Meeker was a member of the Evangelical United Brethren church.

Surviving are one son, Maurice Meeker, of Laramie, Wyo., one daughter, Mrs. Edward Powers, Muscatine; two brothers, Albert Fry of Nichols, and Thomas Fry of Wapello; two sisters, Mrs. George Chapman of Rock Island, Ill., and Mrs. Walter Viner of Muscatine.  She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, two sisters and one brother.

The body is at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home.  Funeral rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the First Evangelical United Brethren church by the Rev. J. Arthur Eveland pastor.  Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery in Muscatine Iowa.

Cranston, Ia., March 14.---Joseph W. Meeker, a lifelong resident of Muscatine county, died suddenly at his home here Saturday of apoplexy.  He was 72 years of age and born in Muscatine county, January 17, 1849.

Surviving are his wife and four children---J. P. Meeker and Mrs. Maude Chapman of Muscatine, Ernest Meeker of Cranston and Mrs. Hattie Lee of Ardon.  One brother, Warren Meeker of Cranston, a sister, Mrs. M. A. Ferris of Portland, Ore., and thirteen grandchildren survive.

One son, Willard V., preceded his father in death.

Funeral services will be held at the Cranston United Brethren church Tuesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock.  Burial will be made in the Cranston cemetery.

Joseph was born in 76 Township in Bloomington County after Iowa had been granted statehood in 1846. He lived with his parents and assisted with the farming, especially during his early teens when his brothers were in the military service.

Joseph Preston Meeker, 74, lifetime resident of Muscatine county died suddenly with a heart attack while he was at work at the Huttig Mfg., Co., 415 p.m. Wednesday. His home was at 1114 Oak street.

Mr. Meeker was born in Muscatine county on April 6, 1874, the son of Josephus W. and Elizabeth Reichley Meeker. He received his education in Muscatine county and at Letts high school. He was graduated as a pharmacist from the Highland Park college in Des Moines.

In 1898 he married Nellie Fry and the couple celebrated their golden wedding anniversary on Jan. 12 of this year. Mr. Meeker was a lifelong member of the First Evangelical United Brethren church and was also a member of the Masonic lodge at Letts.

Surviving are his wife, two children, Maurice Meeker, Laramie, Wyo., and Marion Powers, Muscatine; a half brother W. Ernest Meeker, and a half sister Mrs. John Lee, both of Letts. Preceding him in death were his parents, and one sister, Mrs. Oscar Chapman.

The body is at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home and will remain there until 830 p.m. Friday when services will be conducted at the First Evangelical and United Brethren church by the pastor, the Rev. J. Arthur Eveland.

Interment will be in Memorial Park cemetery.

Columbus Junction --- Mrs. Nelson Meeker, age 78, a resident of Fredonia since 1928, died at her home about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, following a long illness.

She was formerly Miss Mary Coder and was born near Cranston, Oct. 28, 1868, a daughter of John and Eliza Jane Fry Coder.  She was married to Nelson Meeker Dec. 4, 1889.

Surviving are the husband; a daughter, Mrs. F. M. Strange of Ferguson,, Iowa; a son, Chester Meeker, Marshalltown, five grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two brothers Chester M. Coder, of Letts and William Coder, Ottumwa and a sister, Mrs. John Welsch, Moline Ill.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday in the Fredonia Methodist church.  The Rev. J. B. Pooley, pastor, will officiate and burial will be in the Cranston cemetery.

Mrs. Meeker was a member of the Letts Methodist church a number of years.

The Richie funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Maurice W. Meeker, 56, a former resident of Muscatine, died at 4 a.m. today at Laramie, Wyo.
Mr. Meeker, who left Muscatine about ten years ago, died at his home 209 Clark street in Laramie after a short illness.

The son of Joseph p. and Nellie Fry Meeker, he was born Feb. 4, 1899 at Des Moines. He married Muriel Vanatta Nov. 12, 1919 at Muscatine.

Mr. Meeker was a member of the Moose lodge at Laramie, Wyo. A veteran of World War One. He had been employed as a letter carrier.

Surviving is his wife and one sister, Mrs. Edward Powers, Laramie.

Services will be held in Laramie at 10 a.m. Wednesday following which the body will be sent to Muscatine.

The Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home will be in charge of services in Muscatine, which are pending.

Funeral services for Mrs. Muriel V. Meeker, 75, 1208 Orange St., will be held at 130 p.m. Wednesday at the Riley Funeral Home. The Rev. Herbert R. Gotaas will officiate and burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Mrs. Meeker died at 320 p.m. Monday at Muscatine General Hospital following a lengthy illness.

She was born Jan. 3, 1900 in Muscatine the daughter of Howard and Hattie M. Hintermeister Vanatta.

Muriel Vanatta married Maurice W. Meeker March 12, 1919 at Muscatine. She was a member of the Calvary Baptist Church.

There are no immediate survivors.  She was preceded in death by her husband in 1955.

Miss M. Myrtle Meeker, 96, died at Hershey Convalescent Home Sunday morning. Funeral services will be held Tuesday at 1 p.m. at the Fairbanks-Lamb chapel.

Officiating at the service will be Rev. Wesley Snodgrass. Burial will be in Cranston cemetery. Visitation began at the chapel at 1 p.m. today.

Miss Meeker was born Aug. 12, 1877, in Seventy-six township, the daughter of John W. and Harriet Gates Meeker.

There are no immediate survivors. She was preceded in death by her parents, six brothers and one sister.

Born Jan. 18, 1868, in Muscatine county, he was the son of Thomas and Annabelle Collins Meeker.  He married Nettie Brunette Coder Dec. 4, 1889, in Muscatine.

Mr. Meeker spent the greater part of his life in Muscatine and Louisa counties, his home being at Fredonia until his wife's death in 1947, when he went to make his home with his daughter in Mt. Vernon.  He was of the United Brethren faith.

Surviving are a son, Chester Meeker, Marshalltown, a daughter, Mrs. Millie Strange of Mt. Vernon; five grandchildren; 16 great-randchildren; and two great-great grandchildren.

Besides his parents, he was preceded in death by his wife, a son and a daughter.

Baxter's mortuary of Mt. Vernon is in charge of the services.  The body will be brought to the Cranston United Brethren church Thursday and services will be held at the Cranston church at 2 p.m. Thursday.  Burial will be in the Cranston cemetery.

Cranston, May 23--The funeral of Mrs. Carl W. Meeker, who died late Saturday evening after an illness of about five weeks, was held Monday morning at the Cranston church, Rev. E. L. Shaffer conducted the services, reading as a tribute to Mrs. Meeker the last chapter of the Book of Proverbs.  Burial was in the Cranston cemetery, beside her father and mother, who died during the past winter.  Members of the Truth-seeker's class, of which Mrs. Meeker was one, acted as flower and pallbearers.

Rachel Orilla Fry was born May 12, 1878 at Shenandoah, Ia.  She was 44 years old at the time of her death.  For the past 28 years she made her home here.  She was married to Carl W. Meeker, June 23, 1901.  The first child born to them died in infancy but four others with they father survive.  They are Esther, Ralph, Ruth, and Harold.  Mrs. Meeker had three sisters, Mrs. Preston Meeker, and Mrs. William Reimcke both of Muscatine and Mrs. George Chapman of Atalissa Iowa, three brothers, Bert Fry of Nichols, Tom Fry of Wapello and Alec of Ainsworth.

Mrs. Meeker became a member of the United Brethren church eighteen years ago and had remained a faithful and constant worker in that congregation.  The death of Mrs. Meeker broke the ranks of the Truth-seekers class, an organization several years ago.

Besides immediate relatives, among those who attended the funeral were Mr. and Mrs. Howard Meeker and daughters Gertrude and Dorothy of Cedar Rapids; Edgar Meeker, of Clinton, Mr. and Mrs. Milton Hunter, of Washington, Ia., Mr. and Mrs. C. N. Herrick of Muscatine and Mr. and Mrs. Joseph Brookhart of West Liberty.

W. Edgar Meeker, a former resident of Muscatine county who was born and raised in Seventy-Six township, died Wednesday morning at his home in Clinton after a short illness, relatives here have been informed.

Mr. Meeker was born March 15, 1879, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Warren Meeker.  He continued to make his home in Seventy-Six township until 1906 when he moved to Clinton.  He was employed as a railroad engineer on the Nortwestern railroad.

He married Fern Nichols, of Washington, Ia., in 1902.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter, Martha Mae; three brothers, Harry of Muscatine, Carl of Lone Tree, and Howard of Cedar Rapids; and one sister, Miss Myrtle Meeker, of Chicago.  One brother, George, died in Denver several years ago.

Funeral services will be conducted in Clinton Saturday morning, following which the body will be brought here for short services at the Cranston church, Saturday, at 2:30 p.m.  Burial will be made in the Cranston cemetery.

Cranston, Ia., Oct. 22 --- Warren Meeker, 86, pioneer resident of this vicinity, died at 6 o'clock Thursday night in Hershey hospital, Muscatine, following an illness of five weeks. Death was due to intestinal flu and complications. Funeral services will be conducted by Rev. Shaffer from the Cranston U. B. church at 2 o'clock Saturday afternoon. Burial will be in Cranston cemetery.

Born near Dayton, O., July 7, 1840, he came to Iowa with his parents, to Iowa four years later, settling near Cranston. At the outbreak of the Cival war Mr. Meeker enlisted with Company A, Eleventh Iowa regiment, serving throughout the war. On March 1, 1866, he was married to Miss Harriet Gates, who died in 1916.

Following his marriage Mr. and Mrs. Meeker moved to a farm west of Cranston, where they lived until her death. Mr. Meeker held the distinction of being the only Cival war Veteran in the Cranston neighborhood and he was the last of five brothers.

Surviving are six children Carl of near Nichols; Howard of Cedar Rapids; Edgar of Clinton; George of Denver, and Miss Myrtle of Chicago, and 16 grandchildren.

DURANT, Iowa -- Services for Raymond W. Meinert, of Durant, 10 a.m. Saturday at Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, Durant. Burial will be in Durant Cemetery, with military services. Visitation is 4-7 p.m. today at Bentley Funeral Home, Durant, and 9-10 a.m. Saturday at the church.

Mr. Meinert died Wednesday, Nov. 18, 1998, at his home, after an extended illness.

He retired in 1976 after 30 years as postmaster in Durant.

He was born Oct. 26, 1908, in Durant. He married Beulah Jensen in 1939 in Newell.
During World War II, he served in the Army Air Corps.

A memorial fund has been established.

Survivors include his wife; a daughter, Mary Feuerbach, Grinnell; a son, David, Oskaloosa; eight grandchildren; a sister, Ethel Humbert, Cedar Rapids; and a brother, Gilbert, Durant.

Hastings resident Martha "May" (Lau) Jackson Menter, 96, died Monday, Jan. 18, 1999, at Good Samaritan Village Perkins Pavilion.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at First St. Paul's Lutheran Church with the Rev. Harold D. Stromer officiating. Burial will be in Parkview Cemetery. Visitation is 6-9 p.m. Thursday at Butler-Volland Funeral Home and 9 a.m. until services Friday at the church.

Mrs. Menter was born Aug. 17, 1902, to John and Margaretha (Kreinheder) Lau in Hastings. In 1923 she married Lloyd Jackson. He died in 1956. In 1958 she married Otis Menter. He died in 1968. She was a homemaker.  She was a member of First St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Survivors are one son, Don Jackson of Muscatine, Iowa; and three grandchildren.  She also was preceded in death by one sister and four brothers.

Memorials may be given to First St. Paul's Lutheran Church.

Mrs. Etta Merchant, 98, of West Liberty, died Saturday, February 20, 1999, at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, following a lengthy illness.

Services were held Tuesday, February 23, 1999, at the Cedar Valley United Methodist Church, with the Rev. Marilyn Winch officiating. Burial was in the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Cedar Valley United Methodist Church and the Simpson Memorial Home.

Mrs. Merchant was born May 25, 1900, in Blue Grass, the daughter of James and Mary Egel Carpenter. She married Roy H. Merchant on July 23, 1921, in Davenport. They farmed all their life until retiring and moving to West Liberty in 1945. She taught school for eight years in Buffalo, Bettendorf, and Montpelier. She was a lifelong resident of West Liberty and Muscatine County. She was a life member of the Cedar Valley United Methodist Church, where she taught Sunday School for over 30 years, and was Sunday School Superintendent. She was also a charter member of the United Methodist Women, a former member of the Farm Bureau, the Grange, and the Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors include a daughter, Ruthetta Smith (husband, Robert) of West Liberty; a son, Richard Merchant (wife, Donna) of Muscatine; eleven grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; and great great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband in 1986, and a son, Robert.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Edmond "Tiny" Metz, formerly of 807 Broadway St., will be 10:30 a.m. today at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home,  Muscatine. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park,  with military services by the combined squads of the American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars.

Mr. Metz died Wednesday, Nov. 17, 1999, at Muscatine County Residential Facilities. He retired in 1980 as a machinist after 34 years at HON Co.

He was born June 2, 1918, in  Muscatine. He married Helen Martin in 1947 in Muscatine. During World War II, he served with
the Army in the South Pacific. He was involved with five major battles in Saipan, Leyte, Okinawa,  Titian and Wendora.

Memorials may be made to Muscatine County Humane Society or  Parkinson's Research Foundation.

Survivors include his wife; and brothers, Edward P. and Leroy  E., both of Muscatine.

LONE TREE, Iowa - Evelyn Mae Metz, 72, Lone Tree, died Saturday, Aug. 17, 2002, at the Lone Tree Health Care Center, Lone Tree, from complications of Progressive Supranuclear Palsy (PSP).

Services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at St. Mary's Catholic Church, Lone Tree. The Rev. Ben Okonkwo and Parish Life Coordinator Carol Kaalberg will officiate. Burial will be at St. Stanislaus Cemetery. Pallbearers are Jennifer Chiavetta, Mike Millice, Amy Greazel, Justin Oldfield, Jesse Oldfield, Dawn Watz, Eric Weimer and Samantha Grantier. After services at  the church, a luncheon will be held at the church.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday, with a 6:30 p.m. prayer service, at the Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home, Lone Tree. Memorials may be made to the Iowa City Hospice.

Mrs. Metz was born April 2, 1930, in Lone Tree, the daughter of Harry and Velma Wolters  Musser. She married Elmer Metz June 19, 1948, in Lone Tree.
She graduated from Lone Tree High School in 1947.
She was a homemaker and farm wife, 1948-2001.

She was a member of the St. Mary's Catholic Church. She loved animals, crafts,  woodworking, crocheting and sewing.

Survivors include her husband; a son, David and wife Rose of Iowa City; four daughters, Linda Johnson and husband Bill and Barb Oldfield and husband Duane, all of Iowa City, Patricia Weimer and husband Alan of Waynesville, Ohio and Becky Grantier and husband Dave of Winnett, Mont.; eight grandchildren; five great-grandchildren; four brothers, Harold and wife

FORMER COUNTY RESIDENTS DIE;
DOUBLE FUNERAL

Double funeral services of Mrs. Henrietta Metz and son, Martin Metz, former Muscatine county residents, who died during the last week at their home in Miller, Nebr., were held from the church in Buchanan, Iowa, and burial was made in the Buchanan cemetery.  Among the relatives who attended are:  Mr. and Mrs. Jacob Gettert, Mr. and Mrs. August Gettert, Mrs. Henry Gettert, Mrs. Peter Getter (Gettert),  Mrs. Frank McCoy, Miss Lizzie Hinkel, Theodore Gettert, J. H. Grimm, Miss Clara Grimm, Daniel Grimm and Mrs. Fred Karg, all of Muscatine, and Mr. and Mrs. George Brei, D.A. Grimm, Andrew and Louis Grimm of New Era.

Mrs. Metz, who was formerly Miss Henrietta Gettert, was born May 20, 1929, in Germany and came to this country when twenty-four years old, settling in Muscatine County.  Two years later she married Michael Metz, who proceded her in death by thirty-eight years.

Martin Metz was born Aug. 11, 1858, in Muscatine county, and went to Nebraska with his mother about sixteen years ago.  Both died during the past week at their home in Miller and the bodies were shipped to Bucahnan, Iowa, for burial.

Mrs. Metz was also the mother of the late Mrs. Daniel Grimm, Sr. of this city who died Jan. 28, 1919.

Notes: This obit confused me for a number of years as to the residence of the Metz family in Nebraska--as it turned out by a study of plat maps of the area, the family got their mail at Miller NE but actually lived just across the county line in Dawson Co NE.  Records indicate the full name of her husband was George Michael Metz. The original spelling of her maiden name, as used by her parents, was GOETTERT. G. Michale, Henrietta and their son Martin are listed as being buried at Woodbridge Cemetery in Buchanan, Cedar, IA

Mearl R. Metz, 71, of Twin Falls, died Saturday evening at his home following a long illness.

Born April 4, 1911, at Tipton, Iowa, he attended schools in Nebraska, where his family owned and operated a land-grant farm.  During the Dust Bowl era, he and his family moved to Filer, where he worked in farming and at the Twin Falls County Hospital.

For two years, he served in the Civilian Conservation Corps.  He later owned and operated the Metz Furnace and Stoker Service until 1960, when he retired due to an injury.

On Jan 30, 1937, he married Vera Bartlett.  He was a member of Twin Falls Elks Lodge.

Surviving are: his wife, and a daughter Susan E. Jolley, and a granddaughter, Laura Lynn Jolley, both of Twin Falls.

The funeral will be held at 11 a.m. Tuesday at Reynolds Funeral Chapel in Twin Falls, with L.Z. Bartlett officiating.  Burial will be in Sunset Memorial Park.  The family suggests memorial contributions be made to  the Idaho Youth Ranch or the Primary Children's Hospital.  Friends may call at the chapel.

Vera McNally was born May 2, 1904, in Blue Grass, Iowa. She married Henry Metz in 1927 in Davenport. He died in 1976.

William Henry Metz, 52, resident of Filer for the last four years, died yesterday morning at his home in Filer.  He was a retired farmer.

Funeral services will be held tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the White Mortuary Chapel, Rev. Mr. Olson, pastor of the Filer Mennonite Brethren in Christ church officiating.  Interment will be in Twin Falls Cemetery.

Surviving relatives are his widow, Mrs. Emily Metz, and two sons, Mearl and Harold Metz, Filer; his mother Mrs. Maggie Metz, and three brothers and two sisters; Charles Ray and Roy Metz and Mrs. Grace Herring and Mrs. Ida Sietz, Tipton, Iowa.

GREAT BEND, Kan.- Bertha Louise Meyer, 95, died Tuesday, Feb. 25, 1997, at Central Kansas Medical Center in Great Bend.

Funeral services were at 1:30 p.m. Feb. 28, at the Bryant-Christians Funeral Home in Great Bend.  The Rev. Leonard A. Dale Jr. officiated.  Casket bearers were Ken Meyer, Jerry Gravatt, Alvin Otte, Loyal Otte, Glen Larson, and Bus Steadman.

Mrs. Meyer was born March 13, 1901, in Barton County the daughter of William C. and Albina Jaekel Otte.  She married Charley H. Meyer on Dec. 27, 1920 in Hutchinson, Kan. She was a life resident of Great Bend.  She was homemaker and charter member of the Sunflower Club.

Survivors include her husband, Charley; one son Marion K. Meyer of New Underwood, S.D.; and one daughter, Carolyn N. Meyer of Aurora, Colo.; two grandchildren, Kenneth S. Meyer of Muscatine, and Alyn Gravatt of Rapid City, S.D.; two great- granddaughters, Lindsey Lawrence and Randy Meyer, both of Muscatine; and three great-grandsons of Rapid City.

Wilton - Frank Alphus Meyer, 79, a resident of Wilton for 21 years, died at 9:35 a.m. Sunday at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Walter Timmsen.

He was born at Iowa City on Oct. 5, 1869, the son of John and Sophia Matron Meyer, and had lived in Cedar county before coming here. He married Mary E. Lucas on Nov 19, 1895 at Rochester, Ia.

Mr. Meyer was of the Catholic faith and was a retired farmer.

Surviving are five sons, Harley L., George W., Carl O., Edgar L. and Ralph C. Meyer; five daughters, Grace L. Meyer, Mrs. Jane Britcher, Mrs. Anna Timmsen, Mrs. Fay Timmsen and Mrs. Bertha Reginnetter; one brother, E. E. Meyer; one half-brother Carl Strohmeyer; two sisters Clara Meyer and Mary Wildman, 24 grandchildren and two great grandchildren.

Preceding him in death were his wife, three sons, two sisters, three brothers and his parents.

The body is at the Griffith Funeral home here and service will be conducted there at 1:00 p.m. Wednesday by the Rev. Elmer K. Kidwell, pastor of the Wilton Methodist church. Interment will be in the Rochester cemetery.

Memorial services for Johanna M. Meyer, 67, Branson, Mo., formerly of  Muscatine, will be 11 a.m. today at Grace Lutheran Church, Muscatine.  Inurnment will be in Community Garden Mausoleum at Muscatine Memorial Park.

Mrs. Meyer died Nov. 4, 2002, at Cox South, Springfield,  Mo. Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory, Muscatine, is in
charge of arrangements.

She retired in 1998 from Unity Hospital,  Muscatine. She was a registered nurse for many years.

Johanna Krebs  was born March 13, 1935, in Pueblo, Colo. She married Edward Meyer in 1955.

One of Muscatine county's pioneer residents, Ben Middleton, a resident of this community for approximately sixty years passed away at the European Hotel at about five o'clock last evening. His death was due to heart trouble from which he has suffered for more than three months. Mr. Middleton was taken ill early in September, and until two weeks ago was a patient in the Hershey hospital.

Mr. Middleton was born in Pennsylvania, August 28, 1851, and at the time of his death had attained the age of 67 years.

On December 23, 1873, Mr. Middleton was united in marriage with Miss Mellissa A Clark. To this union three children were born, who with the wife survive to mourn his loss. The children are, W. Scott Middleton, Edward B. Middleton and Mrs. H. Mcclung, all of this city. Mr. Middleton is also survived by two brothers, Thomas Middleton of Fruitland township and Chris Middleton of this city and four sisters, Mrs. Charles Mauck of Santa Fe, California; Mrs. R.Comstock and Mrs. George Nollert of San Francisco, California and Mrs. Stella E. Johnston of Bellevue, Mont.

The body is being held at the N. W. Myers undertaking parlors, and it is announced that services will be held over the remains tomorrow afternoon at 2:30 o'clock, from that place.

Irene Brewer Middleton, 80, Ripley Trailer Court, died at her daughter's home.

Services are Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Fair-banks Chapel with the Rev. Edward B. Meyer officiating.  Merrill Womach will be organist.  Pallbearers will be Randall and Larry Brewer, Rick Meye, Greg Nelson, Doug Reist and Gary Wilhelme.  Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

A visitation is today from 6 to 8 p.m. and Friday from 2 to 6 p.m. at the funeral chapel.

Mrs. Middleton was born March 22, 1908 in Kansas, a daughter of John and Catherine Oetken Van Horn. She first married Archie Brewer and later Lyle Middleton, both of whom have preceded her in death.  She was a member of the Eagles Auxiliary and worked as a cook.

Survivors include a son Ralph Brewer of New Boston Illinois, a daughter Mrs. Ralph (June) Welsch of Muscatine, 10 grandchildren, 15 great-grandchildren, a brother Chester Van Horn of Muscatine, a sister Marie Foster of Muscatine Iowa.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, both parents, and two brothers.

Mrs. Miller, who was born in West Liberty, Iowa, lived in Hemet for 36 years. She was a homemaker. She enjoyed playing cards.

Henry H. Miller Sr., 51, 822 Fuller St., president of the Credit Bureau of Muscatine, Inc., died at approximately 3:30 p.m. Wednesday of an apparent heart attack while driving home from his father's farm south of Muscatine.

Funeral services will be held at 9:30 a.m. Saturday at St. Mathias Church.  Visitation will be held after 7 this evening at the Riley Funeral Home.  The rosary will be recited there at 8 p.m. Friday.  Burial will be in St. Mary's Cemetery.

Henry Miller was born Sept. 5, 1925 in Muscatine, the son of John Henry and Hazel Marie Snyder Miller. He was a life resident of the area.  He married Mary Koenigsaecker Sept. 5, 1946, at Muscatine.

He had been associated with the Credit Bureau of Muscatine, Inc. since 1954 and was president since 1971.  He was past president of the Iowa Collectors Association and the Association of Credit Bureaus of Iowa, national chairman of the Association of Credit Bureaus of American and the American Collectors Association.

He was a member of St. Mathias Church, Knights of Columbus, Elks, Moose, Quarterback Club, Chamber of Commerce and Port City Kiwanis.

Surviving are is wife, seven sons, Henry H. Jr., Denis J. of Muscatine, Michael J., Jeff A., Joe A., Jim A., and John A., at home, six daughters, Mrs. W. Tim (Debbie) Hills of Columbus Junction,  Rosalie M. of Muscatine, Mary M., a student of Cedar Falls, Mrs. Nick (Lori) Nietzel of Muscatine, Lea R., and Sharon A., at home, six grandchildren, his father John Henry Miller of Muscatine; and a sister Mrs. William (Wanda) Workman Jr. of Illinois city, Ill.

He was preceded in death by his mother.

J. Henry Miller, 85, 1810 Mulberry Ave., died suddenly of an apparent heart attack Saturday at his home.

Services are Tuesday at 2 p.m. at the Riley Funeral Home with the Rev. Daniel W. Schoepf, pastor of Calvary Baptist Church officiating.  Organist is Vada Timm, Pallbearers are Donald W. Workman, Henry H. Miller Jr., William H. Workman, Denis Miller, Michael Miller, Jeffrey Miller.  Honorary pallbearers are Brian Steahr, Craig Steahr, Steve Hindahl, Archie Kaalberg and George Lindle.  Floral attendant is Mrs. Denis Miller.  Burial will be in the Letts Cemetery.

Visitation is today from 2 to 8 p.m. at the funeral home.

Memorials may be made to the Hershey Manor or the Drury-Reynolds Cemetery.

Mr. Miller was born Aug. 22, 1901 in Lewis County, Mo., a son of John and Anna Mary Pruitt Miller.  He had resided here for most of his life.  His marriage to Hazel M. Snyder took place in Muscatine in 1923.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jesse (Betty) Bauer, Pawnee, Ill.; and Wanda Workman, Illinois City; 19 grandchildren; and 34 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, one son, one daughter, two sisters and one brother.

Mrs. Kenneth (Irene) Miller died Thursday at Detroit, Mich. She was the wife of Kenneth Miller, son of Mr. and Mrs. John W. Miller, Route 2, Muscatine.
Mrs. Miller was the daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Korhman (?) of Peikie, Mich. Her parents preceded her in death. She is survived by her husband, two daughters, Maureen and Gail, and a son, Kenneth.
Services were to be held today at Detroit.

KEWANEE (IL) -- Vera J. Millett, 71, of 250 E. South St. died at 10:25 a.m. Monday, Dec. 20, 1993, at Kewanee Hospital.
Born Nov. 12, 1922, in Conesville, Iowa, to Fred and Elizabeth Stratton, she married Richard L. Millett on Oct. 4, 1941, in Canton, Mo. He died April 16, 1986. Three sisters and two brothers also preceded her in death.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Randy (Judy) Stockner of Kewanee and Mrs. Gary (Joan) Hallock of Perry, Okla.; three brothers, Raymond Stratton of Muscatine, Iowa; Harold Stratton of Davenport, Iowa, and Fred Stratton of Sacramento, Calif.; two sisters, Mrs. Henry (Freida) Wehmeyer and Betty Stinson, both of Muscatine; five grandchildren; and four great-grandchildren.

She was a member of First Presbyterian Church in Kewanee.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Thursday at Rux Funeral Home. Rev. James Breed will officiate.
Visitation will be one hour before services at the funeral home. Burial will be in Pleasant View Cemetery.

Memorials may be made to Kewanee Hospital Hospice Program or to her church.

Henry A. Millhouse, a pioneer carriage manufacturer, died at his residence, 1115 Cooper street Tuesday morning shortly after seven o'clock of ulcer of the stomach and hiccoughs.  Short funeral services will be held at the home Wednesday evening at 5:30 o'clock and Wednesday night the body will be taken to his old home in Keota, Ia., where funeral services will be held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock.  Interment will be in the family lot at Keota.

Mr. Millhouse was up town Wednesday afternoon of last week.  When he returned home he complained to Mrs. Millhouse of notr feeling the best.  While he did not feel well, his illness was not of such a nature to compell him to go to bed until Monday morning when he was seized with the hiccoughs.  Everything in the medical profession was tried to check them but to no avail Monday afternoon his condition became alarming and later Monday hemorrhages started which caused his death Tuesday morning.

The deceased was a native of Germany, having been born in the province of Hesse-Cassel, November 2, 1847.  He came to America when a boy of 12 years old, going to Muscatine, Ia.  He learned the carriage maker and blacksmith trades in Wilton Junction, Ia. and worked at his trades in Moscow and Muscatine, Ia.  For a time he was assisting his father in Washington, Ia., in building houses.

When the town of Keota, Ia. was established in 1872, he opened the first blacksmith shop in the town and built the first buggy ever made in Keota.  He borrowed the money to build his shop and by hard work and careful managementr he accumulated wealth and at the time of his death owned three large farms in Iowa and his home place in this city.

He was married April 15, 1896 to Miss Sadie Rand of Keota, Ia., who with two daughters by a former marriage, Mrs. Emma Trager, Davenport, Ia., and Mrs. Clara Heerd, Muscatine,Ia., a sister, Mrs. Mary Jewett, Grand Junction, Ia., and two brothers, John Millhouse, Beaver, Ia., and William Millhouse, Vinton, Ia., survive.

Mr. and Mrs. Millhouse came to Chillicothe eight years ago from Parsons, Kas., where they disposed of a large farm.  Since coming here Mr. Millhouse has taken an active part in the I.O.O.F. and Knights of Pythias lodges of which he was a member.  Early in life he united with the Lutheran church of which denomination his mother was a member.

Mr. Millhouse since coming to this city has lived a retired life.  He was a close observer of the affairs of the city in which he had made his home and since war broke out he has made a close study of the conditions.  He was a man who was fond of home, was a kind and loving husband and had the respect of all those that knew him.

Mrs. Mills died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at the home of her daughter in Muscatine after a brief illness. She drove a school bus for
Nichols schools for eight years.

Amelia Hadley was born Oct. 28, 1918,  in Letts. She married Burton Mills in 1943 in Muscatine.

Funeral services for Mrs. John Mills, 73, of Route 1, Nichols, will be conducted by the Rev. D. A. Steffenson of the First Methodist church at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home.   Burial will be at Memorial Park cemetery.

Mrs. Mills died at 5:30 p.m. Sunday, 13 March 1955,  at her home on the farm of a heart attack, shortly after she had participated in her golden wedding observance at the home of a daughter.

She was born may 31, 1881 at Iowa City, being a daughter of George and Frances Harper Spratford, and had spent her life in the West Liberty and Nichols communities.

She was married to John L. Mills Feb. 8, 1905 at Nichols.  The golden wedding anniversary observance was postponed from Feb. 8 to Sunday because of ill health, and was held at the home of Mrs. Harry L. Braun.  Mrs. Mills' death occurred after she had returned to her home.

Surviving are her husband, of Nichols; three sons, Arley Mills of Muscatine, Milburn Mills of West Liberty, and Elzie Mills of Nichols; two daughters, Mrs.  Arvilla (Ray) Van Zandt of Muscatine and Mrs. Felicitas (Harry) Braun of Nichols.  Sixteen grandchildren and five great-grandchildren also survive.  She was preceded in death by her parents and two brothers.

Janet Ruth Milum, 59, midtown Kansas City, died April 3, 1994, at Truman Medical Center. Memorial services will be at 7 p.m. Thursday at the chapel of Elmwood Cemetery; cremation. The family requests no flowers and suggests contributions to the American Cancer Society.

Ms. Milum was born in Columbus Junction, Iowa, and lived in Fort Lauderdale, Fla., before moving to this area in 1989. She formerly was a solderer for R&S Electronics in Fort Lauderdale. She was a Baptist.
Survivors include a daughter, Vicki Lynn Woodworth, Catasauqua, Pa.; four brothers, Ralph D. Milum, Independence, and James E. Milum, Donald L. Milum and Larry E. Milum of Kansas City; three sisters, Marjorie Huffstutter, Raytown, Frances Webster, Kansas City, and Geneva Swanson, Martinez, Calif.; and three grandchildren.

Stockton, this county, mourns the death of one of its old and prominent citizens, George A. Mische, who passed away in his 66th year. The remains will be transported to-day to Freeport, Ill., for interment.

Mr. Mische had not been feeling well for a week, but was confined to his bed less than a day ere the fatal summons came, hemorrhage of the brain being the cause.

Mr. Mische was a native of Germany and came to this country in his youth. He saw eight years' service in the navy, being with the South Atlantic Squadron. In 1862 he raised a company of volunteers, was made captain, and with the 132d regiment served until the surrender of Johnston's army.

After the close of the war he moved to Stockton, where for 30 years he served as station agent for the C. R. I. & P. railroad company and agent for the U. S. Express company, resigning his positions last January to lead a retired life. Politically, Mr. Mische was a staunch, uncompromising Democrat.

His wife preceded him in death two years ago, and an adopted daughter residing in Chicago survives. His mother-in-law, and brother-in-law, Mrs. Sophia Mengedoth and Charles Mengedoth, of Freeport, survive. Also, four sisters-in-law, Mrs. C. L. Graessle, of San Jose, Cal., Mrs. Cicero McEvers, of Jacksonville, Ill., Mrs. William A. Schwarze, of Springfield, Ill., and Mrs. Henry B. Witte, of Freeport, Ill.

ALEDO, Ill. -- Services for Loren K. Mitchell, of Aledo, will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at Fippinger Funeral Home, Aledo. Burial will be in Aledo Cemetery. Visitation is 5-7 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Mr. Mitchell died Wednesday, Sept. 2, 1998, at Mercer County Hospital, Aledo.

He farmed many years in the Aledo area and was widely known for his purebred angus cattle. He retired in 1983.

He was born Dec. 5, 1917, in Mercer County. He married Doris Close in 1938 in Muscatine, Iowa.

Memorials may be made to College Avenue Presbyterian Church. Yesterday morning at 5 o'clock occurred the death of Mrs. Andrew Mittman at her home on East Tenth street. The deceased was born in Germany Dec 19, 1872 and came to Muscatine, May 18, 1889. She was ill for six weeks before the end came. She leaves to mourn her death a husband and two brothers. She was a member of the Evangelist Protestant church and was beloved by all who knew her. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon at 2 o'clock from the church, Rev. Jans officiating.

Rock Island--Ruth Lula Monson, 89, died Friday at Moline Public Hospital.
Services are today at 11 a.m. at the Knox-Larson Funeral Home.  Burial will be at Greenview Memorial Gardens, East Moline.

Memorials may be made to the South Park Presbyterian Church, of which she was a member.

Mrs. Monson was born April 30, 1898 at Buffalo Prairie, Ill.,  a daughter of David C. and Leah R. Burrows Vanatta.  She had lived in Rock Island since 1944.  Her marriage to Clair A. Monson took place Dec. 5, 1917 at Muscatine.  She was a member of the Grace Circl of the church and a member of the Buffalo Prairie Chapter No. 516 of the Order of Eastern Star since 1916.  She was a homemaker.

Survivors include five daughters, Edith Claire "Edie" McCreight, Milan; Uneta MacIsaac, Mesa, Ariz; Leah C. Danielson, Rock Island; Beverly "Beeri" Adair, Scottsdale, Ariz; and Nancy Blomgren, Bridgewater N.J.; 12 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Eleanor Crow, Bettendorf, and Ethelyn "Teddy" Allbee of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her husband on March 14, 1953; one brother and one grandson.

LONE TREE, Iowa - Ferrel Moody, 82, Lone Tree, died Wednesday, Nov. 6, 200 2, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, after an extended illness.

Graveside services are 1 p.m. Saturday at the Conesville Cemetery, Conesville. The Rev. Ann Rouse will officiate. Military rites will be conducted by Lone Tree American Legion Post No. 457. After services at the cemetery, a time of fellowship will be held at the Lone Tree American Legion.

There will be no visitation. A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home. The Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home is handling the arrangements.

Mr. Moody was born Feb. 13, 1920, in Winfield, the son of Ray and Bessie Dheal Moody. He  married Virginia Stafford June 8, 1941, in Missouri.

He grew up in Columbus Junction.

He served with the U.S. Army Infantry during World War II, 102nd Infantry Division, Ozark Brigade, European Theater from 1944-46.

He was employed by Ross Dry Goods, first in Columbus Junction and later in Lone Tree. He then started his own business, Ferrel's Clothing Store, which he operated for a number of years in Lone Tree until the mid 1980s when he retired.

He was a member of the Lone Tree American Legion Post No. 457, the Lone Tree Chamber of Commerce and the Lone Tree Masons and a past member of the Lone Tree City Council.  He served on the Lone Tree Health Care Center Board.

Survivors include his wife; two grandchildren, Tanya Moody Campbell and husband Greg of  Dayton and Anthony Moody and wife Kristi of Des Moines; a great-grandchild, William Moody  of Des Moines; a daughter-in-law, Georgia Nealson; a brother-in-law, Delmar Romine of  Washington; nieces and nephews, Linda Hershey and her family of Amherst, N.Y., Gary Kwolek and his family of Culpeper, Va., Pam Pierson of Washington, Troy Romine of Lincoln, Neb., Reggie Pierson of Lincoln and Vicki Wilson and husband Bob and their family of Mount Pleasant.

He was preceded in death by his parents; a son, Terry; a sister, Elaine Kwoldk; two sisters-in-law; two brothers-in-law; and a nephew, Dee McKean.

James William Moon, 75, Independence, died Wednesday, Feb. 24,1999, at St. Mary's of Blue Springs.

Mr. Moon was born Nov. 4, 1923, in Muscatine, Iowa, and had lived in this area most of his life. He was a truck driver.

His survivors include his wife, Dorothy Moon of the home; a daughter, Jami Schafer, Kansas City; and a grandson, James Harkness.

FRUITLAND, Iowa - Sally Moore, 51, of Fruitland, died Monday, Oct. 9, 2000, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Walden Askren will officiate. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Burial will be at the Island Cemetery. A memorial has been established in memory of Sally Moore.

Mrs. Moore was born April 5, 1949, in Muscatine and lived in Fruitland for 25 years and in Letts prior to living in Fruitland. She was of the Pentecostal faith. She was president of the Foster and Adoptive Parent Association for 17 years, from 1971 until 1998. She enjoyed her family and friends and was a 1967 graduate of Muscatine High School.

Survivors include her husband, Jesse of Fruitland; a son, Andrew Michael Moore, at home; two daughters, Christy Ann Moore of Roseville, Calif. and Amy Irene Marthaler and her husband, Chad, of Wilton; her father, Raymond Whittaker and his wife, Thelma, of Columbus Junction; her mother, Delores Blake of Muscatine; step-father, Warren W. Blake of Milton; brothers, Larry Whittaker and his wife, Linda, of Muscatine, Rick Whittaker and his wife, Rose, of Muscatine, Dave Whittaker and his wife, Joanne, of Des Moines and Tim Whittaker of Letts; a sister, Tracie Jo Miller and her husband, Marty, of Batavia; a mother-in-law, Lois Payne Moore of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.   She was preceded in death by two brothers, Jeff and Neil Whittaker.

Dr. G. O. Morgridge, one of the best known physicians in Eastern Iowa, and one of Muscatine's foremost citizens, died last night at his home, 310 Pine Street, at 11 o'clock, the cause being general debility and heart disease.  The news of Dr. Morgridge's death spread rapidly over the city, causing gloom to enter many homes, where the kindly doctor was known almost as a relative.  He had been in ill health for some time, but only a few days ago was able to be at is office for a brief period, walking to and from his office, from his home, consequently the tidings of his death came as a distinct shock.  While never seeking political honors, he was interested in politics, and to him the Muscatine city schools are deeply indebted, as for a number of years he served as an efficient, careful member of the board of education and was for some time its president, in which position his talents as an organizer and executive officer were most forecibly brought out.  Dr. Morgridge also enjoyed a war record equalled by few, enlisting in Company H, 11th Iowa Infantry, he won his way to a capataincy.  He was appointed a member of the Shiloh monument commission, whose duty it was to fittingly mark the field upon which so many brave soldiers gave their all in support of the Union, with Grant as their commander, and ever displayed a keen interest in all Grand Army affairs.

Mrs. Gertrude Maylone Morris, 94, formerly of 514 E. 4th St., died at 6:40 p.m. Saturday at Muscatine General Hospital.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home.  Rev. Waylon Taylor will officiate.  Burial will be in the Klien Cemetery.  Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 this evening.

Gertrude Essex was born May 27, 1882, in Drury Township, Ill., the daughter of Joseph and Exira Hood Essex.  She was a life resident of the area.

She married Eugene Maylone July 3, 1901, at Muscatine.  She married Albert Morris Jan. 3, 1956, at West Branch.

Surviving are five sons, Joe and Robert Maylone of Tampa, Fla., John, Charles and Paul Maylone of Muscatine; 27 grandchildren, 77 great-grandchildren; and five great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, a son, a sister and five brothers.

She was a 1949 graduate of City High in Iowa City and later graduated from the University of Iowa with a BA in English and a MA in Library Science from the University of Wisconsin. She also attended the University of Iowa Law School. She married Lewis Morrison in Iowa City on December 10, 1966.

Following high school graduate, Joyce was employed as a telephone operator for 15 years. She later was a librarian in the Chicago Public Library for several years. She was a substitute teacher and also worked as a secretary at the Simpson Memorial Home, both in West Liberty. Most recently, she was employed at MCI in Iowa City, retiring in 1994. Joyce was an active member of the First Church United, West Liberty, where she was a Sunday school teacher, communion server, deacon and belonged to the Hope Circle. She was also a member of the American Association of University Women and the Garden Club. She was a Girl Scout leader for 30 years and later was involved with district training.

Survivors include her husband, Lewis Morrison of West Liberty; a daughter, Marcia Free (husband, Michael) of Nashville, Tennessee; a son, Michael Morrison (wife, Mary Kay) of Fort Collins, Colorado; and two grandchildren, Katy and Hannah. She was preceded in death by her parents and a brother, Paul Adams.

ALEDO, Ill. ----  Lester R. Morrow, 82, of Aledo, formerly of Joy, Ill., died Sunday, Oct. 12, 1997, at the Mercer County Hospital in Aledo.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Wednesday, at the Fippinger Funeral Home in Aledo. The  Rev.Claude Moreland of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Pallbearers will be Jay Morrow, Darrell Morrow, Scott Morrow, John Schneck, Hen Schneck and Mitchell Anderson. Burial will be at the Peniel Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. tonight, at the funeral home where the family will be present from 6 to 8 p.m.  Memorials may be left at the funeral for the American Cancer Society or the Joy United Methodist Church.

Mr. Morrow was born May 10, 115, in Millersburg Township, Mercer County, Ill., a son of George R. and Ida Esplande Morrow.

He graduated from the former Joy High School, where he excelled in sports including basketball and track. He attended Monmouth College in Monmouth, Ill.  His marriage  to Helen J. Kistler took place on Sept. 22, 1934, in Aledo.  He farmed south of Joy, for many years. He   retired in 1980, from employment as a chemical technician at Alcoa.  He was a life member of the Joy United Methodist Church.  He enjoyed gardening and was an avid sports. fan.

Survivors include his wife, Helen; one daughter, Mrs. Mike (Kathy) Sponsler of Aledo; three sons and daughters-in-laws, Gary and Larlaine Morrow of McDonough of Georgia, Curtis and Mardelle Morrow of Andalusia, Ill., and Greg Morrow of Chicago; eight grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, one sister, Marie Waters of Moline, Ill.  He was preceded in death by his parents and one daughter, Nancy.

Donald Wayne Morse, age 82, of Muscatine, died Thursday, Nov. 30, 2000, at Unity Hospital in Muscatine.

Funeral services will be a.m. Monday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Kenneth Franz will officiate.
Visitation will be from 3-6 p.m. Sunday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  A memorial has been established.
Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park with full military honors.

Mr. Morse was born November 4, 1918, in Muscatine the son of Harold & Ethel (Surber) Morse.  On May 29, 1938, he was united in Marriage to Dorothy Marie Herlein in Muscatine.

He served his country during World War II in the U.S. Army.  He owned his own service station, Don's 66, on Grandview Avenue in Muscatine for many years and later was a manager of the Super Wash.

He attended First Baptist Church in Muscatine and liked hunting and fishing.  He very much enjoyed his grandchildren.

Survivors include daughters, Patricia Efflandt and husband Larry of Silvis, Ill., Sharon Weggen and husband Larry of Muscatine, Debbie Calvert and husband Maynard of Muscatine, and Lisa Phelps and husband Steve of Muscatine; three sons, Tom Morse and wife of Eldridge, Michael Morse and wife Mary of Reedley, Calif., and Dennis Morse and wife Kim of Muscatine; 14 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren, and one sister, Thelma Burnett, Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, Dorothy on July 4, 1998; one infant son, Ronald "Butch" Morse; and one sister, Lela Harris.

Mrs. Morse was born Dec. 30, 1922, in Muscatine, the daughter of Ernie and Minnie Albright Herlein,  She married Donald Morse on May 29, 1938, in Muscatine.  She was a lifelong resident of Muscatine.

She was a food service worker at the Muscatine School system for over 20 years and just retired this past December.
She spent time with her husband at the Lutheran Homes every day and also enjoyed spending time with her family and grandchildren.

Mrs. C.A. Morse, about 57 years old, a resident of Livingston County for more than 40 years died last night at 8 o'clock lastr night at her farm home near Dawn.

Mrs. Lora Morse was born in Downing, Mo.  She is survived by her husband and seven children.  Her father, William Garmand, lives at Memphis, Mo.

Funeral services will be held at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon from the Ludlow Methodist Church.  The Rev. Laverne Rudolph of Little Rock will conduct the services.  Burial will be at Monroe Cemetery under the direction of the Dickinson Funeral Home of Bogard.

The surviving children are Edwin, Kansas City; Lowell, Ludlow, Mrs. Odessa McBee, Columbus Junction,Ia., Mildred Morse, Kansas City; Junior Morse and Mrs. Gladys Mooney, both of Muscatine, Ia. and Laverne of the home.

She was married February 14, 1909 to Christian Andrew Morse and soon moved to Livingston county, where she has resided since.  To this union was born five sons and three daughters.

Preceding her in death were her mother and one son, Cecil Harding Morse, who died in infancy.  Surviving are her husband, her father, W.A. Gorman of Memphis, Missouri, and the following children: Edwin William, North Kansas City, Mo., Lowell Lee, Ludlow, Mo., Odessa Marie McBee, Columbus Junction, Ia., Lucille Morse, Kansas City, Mo; Gladys Estella Mooney, Muscatine, Ia. Junior Lyle Morse, Muscatine, Ia. and Laverne Dale Morse of the home.  There are nine grandchildren and a host of relatives and friends.

She was a member of the Bethany Baptist Church.

Funeral services were held last Thursday at the Methodist church in Ludlow, conducted by the Rev. Laverne Rudolph.  Interment was at Monroe cemetery in Ludlow by E. A. Dickerson, undertakers.

Services are 11 a.m. Wednesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Arturo Carranza will officiate. Burial will be at the Island Cemetery with full military rites conducted by the combined units of VFW Post No. 1545 and American Legion Post No. 27. A luncheon will be held at the Moose Lodge of Muscatine following the burial. Pallbearers are Don Allen, Danny Chick Jr., C.J. Cavazos, Chad Deitz, Gary Reinier Jr. and Kenny Solberg. Mr. Morse was born Aug. 16, 1937, in Fruitland, the son of Oral and Ellen Greiner Morse.
He served in the U.S. Army from 1955-1957 and was in the reserves from 1957-1964.
He farmed for several years and worked for the City of Muscatine as a Senior Operator III for 30 years.

He was a member of the Moose Lodge of Muscatine, American Legion Post No. 27 of Muscatine and past member of the Eagles of Muscatine.   He enjoyed bowling, hunting and tinkering with anything mechanical, but most of all, he loved to spend time with his kids and grandchildren.

Survivors include two sons, Kenneth Morse and wife Mary of Davenport and Welsey J. Morse and wife Cassandra of Muscatine; a daughter, MariLee Bohling and husband Tim of Muscatine; a stepson, Jerry Solomon of Wapello; a stepdaughter, Tina Lough and husband Jim of Muscatine; six grandchildren; eight stepgrandchildren; two great-grandchildren; a sister, Marge Reinier of Muscatine; and special friend, Ardis Rick of Muscatine.  He was preceded in death by his parents; and a sister, Wilma Morse.

 Mr. Muller was born Aug. 4, 1958, in Iowa City, the son of John "Jack" and Marilyn Joann Walsh Muller. He married Patricia Hackert on Aug. 3, 1994, in Iowa City.

 He was a 1976 graduate of Highland High School. He worked for the Lear Corporation. He dearly loved to fish and hunt.

 Survivors include his wife, Patricia of Amana; one sister, Cheryl Metz of Coralville; one brother, Rick Muller of Commerce City, Colo., and his maternal grandmother, Velma Walsh of Wellman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jack and Marilyn and one brother, David.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Nichols Chapel Hill Funeral Home and Crematory in Muscatine. Private family graveside rites will follow with burial in Greenwood Cemetery.  Visitation is 9 a.m. until service time Friday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association or the Shiner Children's Hospital.

Mrs. Mullen was born Jan. 24, 1928, in St. Joseph, Miss., the daughter of Homer A. and Sadie S. Roberts Dillon. She married Louran Francis Mullen Sept. 2, 1948, in Ottumwa.

She was a 1946 graduate of Central High School in Davenport.
She worked as a USDA Meat Inspector for Louis Rich and Oscar Mayer and also was a private duty nurse.

She attended the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints. She was a member and past-Worthy Matron of the Order of the Eastern Star and High Priestess of the White Shrine as well as holding many other offices. She was a past member of Ladies of the Moose.
She enjoyed cooking, baking, ceramics and fishing.

Survivors include her husband, Louran; a son, Thomas Mullen and his friend, Todd Muma, of West Allis, Wis.; two daughters, Gayle Beverlin and her husband, Joseph, and Pamela Grimm and her husband, Patric, all of Muscatine; nine grandchildren; several great-grandchildren; two brothers, Virgil "Bud" Dillon of Eldridge and Chester Hintz of Dixon; three sisters, Elaine Pierce of Wheatland, Katie Calmer of Council Bluffs, and Kathleen Mahoney of Oregon, Wisc.; several nieces and nephews; and her loving dog, Mon-A-Mi, and cat, Rosie.  She was preceded in death by her parents and one brother in infancy.

John Munn, Sr, was born May 29, 1803 in Washington County, Pennsylvania, and died at the home of his son, L. J. Munn, who lives at Muscatine, Iowa, February 10, 1897.

By trade he was a blacksmith, learning his trade in the city of Pittsburg, Pa, after which he was married to Miss Rachel Atchison. To this union was born three daughters, one of which still survives, the others with the mother having preceded him. Two years later he married Miss Sophia Pearson. To this union was born four daughters and two sons. He moved from Pennsylvania to Ohio and from there to the state of Missouri where he lived eight years. His second wife having died there he returned to
Ohio and two years later married his third wife, Miss Pheobe Homan, after which he went back to Missouri for a short time. From there he moved to Cedar County, Iowa, in 1849 where he was blessed with five sons and four daughters by his third wife, of which two died in infancy and the third death was Mr. L. T. Munn of Tipton, who died April 9, 1896; the mother having passed away to her reward some twelve years ago.

His three wives were all good christian women and all died rejoicing in a Saviour's love. Mr. Munn himself was a christian man the greater part of his life and also a very patriotic citizen and loved God, home and native land and was ready to defend either, so he had his battles to fight and we trust his victories. Having lived to the good old age of ninety-three years, eight months and eight days, he was called from his son's home in Muscatine where he had been tenderly cared for in his old age, to his
home with loved ones in heaven.

The remains were brought to Hebron M. E. church, south of Tipton, where a large gathering of old friends and relatives paid their last tribute of respect. The funeral services were conducted by Rev. W. F. Bacon assisted by Rev. Bowers. Interment in Hebron cemetery to await the resurrection.

Zaeda Ann died Monday, Nov. 11, 2002, at Unity Hospital, Muscatine. She was born  May 21, 2002, in Muscatine.

She graduated from Wapello High School in 1971, attended the United Methodist Church in Conesville and was involved with the United Methodist Women. She ran her own business cleaning homes. She enjoyed flowers and gardening, crafts and was an avid reader and especially loved her granddaughters.

She is survived by her husband Lynn Murphy of Conesville; son James Chadd (special friend Belinda) of Conesville; daughter Becky (husband Morrill) Overton of Conesville; two grandchildren, Ashley and Ali Overton; father Paul Vanderlinden of Oskaloosa and mother Janise Allison of Muscatine; three sisters, Debbie (husband Jim) Cupps of Waterloo, Cindy Anderson of Letts, Wanda (husband Davy) Miller of Carmi, Ill.; one brother William (wife Lori) Allison of Wilton.

MUSCATINE - Hazel E. Myers, 91, 305 Monroe St. died Friday night, Feb. 7, 1997, at Muscatine General Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Tuesday, at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. William Means of the First Baptist Church will officiate. Betty Lincoln will be organist. Vocalist will be Marion Bower and Shirley Huff.

Mrs. Myers was born Aug. 14, 1905, in Moscow Township, Muscatine County, a daughter of Albert and Mary Perry Brown. She was a life resident of the area.  Her marriage to Allie Myers took place in Muscatine.

She was a member of the First Baptist Church.

Survivors include a grandson, Craig Moss of Muscatine, a granddaughter, Mrs. Dennis (Cheryl) Handley of Madison, Ala., four grandchildren, Amanda Mixon, Brad S. Moss, Travis J. Moss, and Shane N. Moss; three great-grandchildren, Austin Moss, Alison Moss, and Aubrey Mixon; and two sisters, Myrtle Quast of Muscatine, and Mable Healey of Davenport.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband in 1984, one daughter, Darlene J. Moss, two sons, Robert and Melvin, in infancy and five brothers, and seven sisters.
