DAVENPORT -- Kenneth R. Cabel, 55, 2776 Willow Drive, Bettendorf, died Thursday at the Guttenberg Hospital, Guttenberg.

Services are Monday at 11:30 a.m. at the Runge Mortuary.  Burial will be in the Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport.
Visitation is Sunday from 3 to 8 p.m. at the mortuary

Mr. Cabel was born Aug. 13, 1931 at Walcott, a son of Robert and Vera Peters Cabel.  His marriage to Janet O'Brien Gates took place Aug. 23, 1984 at Davenport. He was an Army veteran of the Korean Conflict.  He was a member of the Rock Island Conservation Club, the Quarter-Century Club of Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company and was a hunter and fisherman.  H was a 27 years employee of Iowa-Illinois Gas and Electric Company, Davenport.

Survivors include wife; three sons, Gary Cabel, Bettendorf; Wayne Cabel and David Cabel, both of Davenport; one stepson, Michael Martens, Moline; one daughter, Lynnette Cabel. LeClaire; his mother of Walcott; and one brother, Warren Cabel, also of Walcott.

His father preceded him in death.

LOUISVILLE KY -- Thelma Elizabeth "Libby" Cain, 74, Shepherdsville, died Wednesday at her  home.  She was a native of Grayson County, a retired employee of Brown & Williamson Tobacco Corp. and a member of Lebanon Junction Order of Eastern Star Chapter 72.

Survivors: her husband, Bill Cain; a daughter, Doris Doyle of Lebanon Junction; two sisters, Alberta Wahe of Shepherdsville and Victoria Olinger of Muscatine, Iowa; seven grandchildren; and 18 great-grandchildren.

Funeral: 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Independence Baptist Church, Shepherdsville. Burial:  Evergreen Cemetery. Visitation: Hardy-Close Funeral Home, Shepherdsville, 9:30 a.m.-9  p.m. Friday, and the church after 8 a.m. Saturday.

 MUSCATINE --- James A. Call, 66, 914 Cypress St., died early today, Monday, Nov. 27, 1995, at Genesis Medical Center, East Campus, Davenport.    Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Arthur Carranza of Bloomington-Muscatine Friends Church will officiate, Pallbearers will be Donald Ash, Leonard Longhurst, Chuck Howard, Marvin Franklin, Robert Call and James Wedekind. Honorary pallbearers John  Shetler, Richard Ludman, Lyle Chamberlin and Dr. William Roudybush. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.   Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home where a memorial has been established.

Mr. Call was born Dec. 31, 1928, in Louisa County, a son of George and Paulina Craig Call.   He married Ruth Mary Estabrook on June 27, 1970 in Galesburg, ILL.   He was a member of the church and the Moose and Eagle lodges.
He was a veteran of World War II, serving as a paratrooper.
Prior to his retirement, he worked as a semitrailer truck tractor driver for 40 years, and later was employed at Mid-City Car Wash.

Survivors include his wife, Mary; one son, Arthur Dewayne Call of Iowa City; two daughters , Mrs. Edward "Butch" (Gail Jean) Seydel of Iowa City, and Mrs. Dennis (Sara) Kauffman of Wapello; four grandchildren, five great-grandchildren; his mother, Paulina Call of Iowa City; three brothers, Daniel Call and his wife, Deloris of Columbus City, Pearl Call of Davenport, and William Call of Missouri; and five sisters, Mrs. Daniel (Helen) Ford and Mrs. Robert (Mary) Honea, both of Muscatine, Mrs. Harry (LeVada) Osborn of Altoona, Leah DeWitt of Iowa City, and Mrs. Donald (Sharon) Allen of Columbus Junction.
He was preceded in death by his father, and one son, James, in infancy.

Geneva H. Campbell, 99, died Wednesday, May 19, 1999, at the Lutheran Home in Muscatine, following an extended illness.  Funeral services were held Monday, May 24, 1999, at the Barker Funeral Home, West Liberty, with Rev. Mario Padilla officiating. Music was provided by organist Les VerHelst and soloist Louise Bishop.

Casketbearers were Bill Bishop, Verland Olsen, Charles Newcomb, Les Henderson. Dr. N. W. Blackman was honorary casket bearer. Burial was in Oak Ridge Cemetery, West Liberty.

Mrs. Campbell was born February 11, 1900, in Davenport, the daughter of Clarence and Louisa Fisher Henderson. Her family moved to West Liberty in 1905, where she graduated from West Liberty High School and then the University of Iowa. She taught school for nine years, working in Washington, and Charles City. She married Glen Campbell in 1929. In the late 1940s, she started a greenhouse business that she operated for 20 years until her retirement. She was a member of the Baptist Church.

Survivors include four nieces: JoAnn White (husband, Hubert), Ruth Jean Weathers (husband, William),
C. Joyce Sechler, and Donna Reitz (husband, Frank); a grand niece, Sheila A. Sechler and many other grand nieces and nephews also survive. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, two brothers, and two nephews.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - John Oscar Canarr, 62, of Muscatine, died Thursday, Nov. 15, 2001, at his home.
Services are 3 p.m. Monday at Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine.  Visitation is 2-3 p.m. Monday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers a memorial has been established for the purchase of a headstone.
He was born April 25, 1939, to Kenneth and Mabel Davidson Canarr in Moscow.
He married Donna L. Lamb July 7, 1962 in Moline, Ill.
He worked 30 years as a forklift driver for Heinz U.S.A. until 1999.  He also farmed in the Muscatine area.
Survivors include his wife, Donna, Muscatine; his son Jon W. Canarr, Muscatine; three daughters, Roxanna Lutrell and her fiance, Rick Puckett, New Boston; Wendy Lough and her husband, Kyle, Columbus Junction; Sheila Stroughmatt and her husband, Tim, Muscatine and two extended daughters, Janet Fuller, Columbus Junction and Jodi Strause,
Muscatine.
There are 20 grandchildren; two brothers, Lester Canarr, Muscatine and Fred Canarr of Channelview, Texas and one sister Nancy Renfro and her husband, Jim, Muscatine.
He was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Cotey; a sister, Janet Shetler and a niece, Cheri Carlson.

Kenneth F. Canarr, 83, a resident of Muscatine Care Center, formerly of 402 Evans St.; died Tuesday, July 18, 1995, at Muscatine General Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  Pat Dilts will be organist.  Pallbearers will be Leslie Canarr, Richard Canarr, Jon Canarr, Michael Canarr, Lance Bennett and Donald Glaspie.  Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Canarr and Tim Carlson.  Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home.  A memorial has been established.  A Moose Lodge memorial service will be at 8 p.m.

Mr. Canarr was born Aug. 9, 1911, in Muscatine, a son of Oscar C. and Ida Mae Jewett Canarr.  He was a life resident of the area.

His marriage to Mabel Davidson took place Nov. 19, 1936, in Galesburg, Ill.

He attended Spangler United Methodist Church.  He was a member of the Muscatine Moose Lodge.

He enjoyed being a farmer.  He had worked at John Deere in Rock Island, Ill. before working for H. J. Heinz in Muscatine for 19 years prior to his retirement.

Survivors include three sons, Lester Canaar and his wife Elvira of Muscatine, Fred Canarr and his wife, Jan. of Channelview, Texas, and John Canarr and his wife, Donna of Fruitland; two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Nancy) Renfro, and Mrs. John (Janet) Shetler, both of Muscatine; 21 grandchildren, 32 great-grandchildren; and two sisters, Lynetta Staack, and Lila Mae Simpson, both of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers, one granddaughter and one great-grandson.

Mabel Canarr, 75, formerly of Evans Street, died Tuesday, Feb. 5, 1991, at the Muscatine Care Center.

Services will be Friday, Feb. 8, at 1:30 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis--Funeral Home.  The Rev. Andrea Bishop, of the Spangler Chapel United Methodist Church, will officiate.  Pallbearers will be Leslie Canarr, Richard Canarr, Michael Canarr, Donald Glaspie, Tim Carlson and Jon Canarr.  Honorary pallbearers will be Fred Canarr, Lance Bennett and Kenneth Glaspie, Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.

Mrs. Canarr was born Jan. 5, 1916 at Illinois City, a daughter of George and Roxanna Cunningham Davidson.  Her marriage to Kenneth Canarr took place Nov. 19, 1936, in Galesburg.

Survivors include her husband, Kenneth; three sons Lester Canarr of Muscatine; Fred Canarr of Channelview, Texas; and John Canarr, of Fruitland; two daughters, Mrs. Jim (Nancy) Renfro and Mrs. John (Janet) Shetler, both of Muscatine; 30 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; and two brothers, Lyle Davidson of Elkhorn, Iowa; and Manford Davidson of Rock Island.

She was preceded in death by her parents, five sisters and three brothers.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose and an affiliate of the Spangler Chapel United Methodist Church.

She had been an employee at Heinz and the Huttig Manufacturing Company and the I Cafe on Walnut Street in Muscatine for 18 years.  She was last employed at Dan-de Donut on Grandview Avenue.

TIPTON--Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Sheets funeral home for Loren E. Carlisle, 51, superintendent of light and water for Tipton, who was killed instantly Tuesday while working on a bank of transformers on the Tipton lighting system.

Mr. Carlisle was born in Tipton November 1, 1900. He spent his entire life in this community.

Surviving are his widow and five daughters, Mrs. Patricia Trump of Mechanicsville, Mrs. Mary Jane Wynekauf of Tipton and Sandra, Cynthia and Carla at the home in Tipton.  Other survivors include two grandchildren, three sisters, Mrs. Roxana Crawford of Pascagoula, Miss., Mrs. Blanche Pike and Mrs. Pearl Hines, both of Nichols, and three brothers, Wallace of Lincoln, Nebr., Forrest of Muscatine, and Norman of West Liberty.
Burial will be in St. Mary's cemetery.

Cherrie A. Carlson, 29 died Tuesday morning, June 14, 1994, at Muscatine General Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Friday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Harry Holcomb of the Open Door Baptist Church in Montpelier will officiate. Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.
Visitation is from 2 to 8 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. In lieu of flowers, a memorial has been established for the children's education.

Mrs. Carlson was born March 8, 1965, in Iowa City. Her step-father and mother were John and Janet  Canarr Shetler. She was a life resident of the area.  She married Tim Carlson on March 10, 1983, in Muscatine.  Her family was her whole life.

Survivors include her husband, Tim; three daughters, Elizabeth, Samantha and Cristie, all at home; her mother and stepfather, Janet and John Shetler of Muscatine; three brothers, Donald Glaspie of Cedar Falls, Jimmy Glaspie of Grand Rapids Mich. and Forrest Glaspie Jr. of Muscatine; three sisters, Cindy Glaspie of Kirksville, Mo., Peggy Cole of Des Moines, and Kandy Imlay of Radcliffe; two stepsisters, Cheryle Freyermuth of Wilton, and Vonnie Foley of West Liberty; her paternal grandmother, Dollie Glaspie of Kirksville, and her maternal grandfather, Kenneth Canarr of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her paternal grandfather and her maternal grandmother.

Letha Irene Carlson, 82, of P. O. Box 102, Fruitland, died Monday, May 11, 1992, at Muscatine General Hospital.

United Methodist Church will officiate. Burial will be at the Island Cemetery.

Mrs. Carlson was born Feb. 22, 1910, in Fruitland Township, Muscatine County, Iowa, a daughter of Benjamin Iowa and
Minnie C. Morse Nelson. She married Oscar E. Carlson on Dec. 28, 1932, at Aledo, Ill. She had lived here since 1947.
She worked at Sauer's Dining Wheel in Muscatine from 1964-71.

Survivors include one son, Lawrence E. Carlson of Muscatine; five grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband on Nov. 4, 1972, one sister and one half-brother.

Oscar Ernest Carlson, 76, Fruitland, died at 4:10 a.m. today at his home from a heart ailment.  Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m.
Monday at the Geo. M. Wittich funeral home. Burial will be in the Island cemetery. Visitation will begin at 7 tonight.

Oscar Carlson was born Aug. 23, 1896 at Urshult, Sweden, the son of Carl and Bretta Mungerson Mungerson. He had lived in
Muscatine since 1920.  He married Letha Nelson Dec. 28, 1932 at Aledo, and was a member of the Lutheran faith.
Surviving are his wife; a son, Lawrence E. Carlson, Fruitland; and five grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents,
eight brothers and one sister.

NORTH LIBERTY, Iowa - Kathryn Brei "Kathy" Carney, 46, of North Liberty died Monday, July  16, 2001, at her home from complications of ovarian cancer.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at Lensing Funeral and Cremation Service in Iowa City. The  Rev. Judy Gingerich will officiate. Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery in  Muscatine.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Kathy  Carney Memorial Fund.

Mrs. Carney was born Dec. 7, 1954, in Wichita, Kan., the daughter of Robert Louis and Marilyn Edith Hines Brei. She married Hugh Carney Sept. 3, 1997, in Las Vegas, Nev.

She moved with her family at an early age to the West Liberty and Muscatine area. She  graduated from West Liberty High School in 1973 and received her bachelor's of arts degree  in business from Kirkwood Community College. In 1988 she moved to North Liberty.

She was a packaging operator for General Mills in Cedar Rapids.
She enjoyed traveling, biking, boating and antiquing.

Survivors include her husband, Hugh of North Liberty; a son, Ryan Williams and his wife, Carol, of Iowa City; two step-children, Desiree and Westley Carney, both of Cedar Rapids; her father, Robert Brei of West Branch; a brother, Randy Brei and his wife, Vicki, of Marion; a sister, Lou Ann Lathrop and her husband, Dennis, of West Branch; her step-father, Marion Cubbage of Letts; several nieces; and a nephew.

She was preceded in death by her mother, Marilyn Cubbage, a niece and a cousin

Joyce L. Carpenter, 53, Route 5, Box 259, died early today, Thursday, June 11, 1992 at St Luke's Hospital in Davenport.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday June 13 at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  Organist will be Florence Hetzler.  Burial will be at Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 2 to 4 p.m. and from 6 to 8 p.m. Friday.  Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Foundation.

Mrs. Carpenter was born Aug. 13, 1938 in Muscatine, a daughter of William and Margaret Martin.  She had lived here for most of her life.  She married Lester J. Carpenter on July 9, 1960 in Muscatine.

She was a member of the Women of the Moose.

Survivors include her husband, Lester; two daughters, Mrs. John (Deborah) Richardson of Letts and Mrs. Michael (Patricia) Nelson of Austin, Minn; five grandchildren; her father, William Martin and stepmother Betty, of Grandview, and one sister Shirley Martin of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her mother, one brother and one son, Larry.

Mrs. Vera M. Carriker, 52, of 1403 Kansas St. died at 2:50 p.m. Thursday at Mercy hospital, Iowa City, after an illness of
several weeks.  Mrs. Carriker had been a resident of Muscatine since 19?8.

She was born June 26, 1911, the daughter of Alonzo D. and Celia Anson Pool, in Van Buren County, and had formerly lived at
Fairfield.  Her first marriage was to George Adkins. She was married Oct. 17, 1948, at Kahoka, Mo., to Chester M. Carriker.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, Raymond H. Adkins and Leonard G. Adkins, both of Muscatine; two stepsons; two daughters,
Mrs. James J. Rickey of Muscatine and Mrs. Raymond Kepler of Eldon, Mo.; five step daughters; six brothers, Harold, Raymond and Willard Pool, all of Detroit, Wallace Pool of Rockford, Ill., Bernard Pool of Orange, Calif., and Orville Pool of Fort Madison; three
sisters, Mrs. Elsie Boge of Salem, Ia., Mrs. Adrian Paris of Goring, Mo., and Mrs. Paul Sanders of St. Louis, Mo.; 14 grandchildren, and three step-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents and first husband.

The body is now at the George M. Wittich funeral home, where Talmadge Murphy will conduct funeral services at 1:30 pm.

WAPELLO--Agnes Ellen Carter, 94, formerly of Wapello and Grandview, died Monday evening, June 1, 1992, at the Monticello Senior Home in Monticello.  Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, June 4, at the Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, officiated by the Rev. Bill Young.  Burial will be at the Wapello Cemetery.
The family will meet with friends from 7 to 8 p.m. today.

Mrs. Carter was born Oct. 20, 1897, in Muscatine, a daughter of Ora and Mary Louise LaPlant Connor.
On Jan. 26, 1916, she married William Elmer Carter in Burlington.  The couple owned and operated Carter's Market in Wapello and later Carter's General Store in Grandview for a total of 25 years.

She was a member of the Grandview Community Bible Church and had attended First Presbyterian Church in Wapello.

Survivors include one son, Kenneth E. Carter of Monticello; eight grandchildren and several great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband on Feb. 4, 1969, her parents, one son, Richard, one daughter, Phyllis Lee, one sister and one brother.

Fred H. Carter, 70, lifelong, resident of Muscatine, died at 9:02 p.m. Thursday at the Veterans hospital in Iowa City, after an extended illness.

He had been living at the home of his daughter Mrs. Frank E. (Cleo) Bermel, Route 2, Muscatine.

Mr. Carter was born Oct. 15, 1893, in Muscatine, the son of William and Mary Welsh Carter.

A veteran of World War I.  Mr. Carter was a retired truck driver.  He had driven for the Rock Island, Arsenal, H. F. Smith Co., and the Automatic Button Co.  He was married Nov. 12, 1919 at Wilton to Florence Knouse.

Surviving are one son Paul H. Carter, 1445 34th Ave., Rock Island; Mrs. Frank E. Bermel, Sweetland Township two brothers, Sydney Carter and Reginald Carter, both of Muscatine; two sisters, Mrs. Mabel McElroy and Mrs. Bessie Morrison both of Muscatine, and five grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, one son, and two brothers.

The body is now at the Riley funeral home where friends may call this evening.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Riley home.  Rev. Leland L. Enke, pastor of Sweetland Methodist church, will officiate.  Interment will be at Greenwood cemetery.

Gerald William Carter, 18, Sweetland township youth, was instantly killed Thursday afternoon about 3:30 when struck from behind by the the west-bound Golden State Limited, Rock Island passenger train, near the Sherman street crossing, at the easterly limits of the city.

Two companions, with whom he was walking along the railroad tracks while returning from fishing in the Mississippi River nearby leaped to safety from just in front of the locomotive.  Gerald's efforts to escape failed by only a split second, a steel step at the right side of the locomotive's pilot striking the youth's leg as he was almost clear of the tracks.

A verdict of accidental death, resulting from a broken neck, was returned by a coroner's jury, which conducted an inquest at 10:30 this morning in the George M. Wittich Funeral home under the direction of Coroner W. S. Norton.  Members of the coroner's jury were E. E. Fishburn, Ed Vanatta, and E. H. Vaupel.

Merle Thomas, 14, of 1518 East Fifth street, and Albert Hite, 16, of 1521 East Fifth street, told at the inquest of how they and the Carter youth were returning along the railroad track form their fishing trip when the accident occurred.

Still visibly stunned by the shock of the tragedy and their own narrow escape from death, the boys said that the noise of an east-bound freight train which was passing at the same time drowned out any warning of the limited which was bearing down upon them.

They said that they had been walking on the left track, but moved over to the right track when the freight train came in view.  The Hite boy was the first to glance over his shoulder and see the Golden State just behind them.

He said that the train was only about 15 feet away at the time Hite said that he yelled to the other two boys and then jumped for the north side of the track.  He and Thomas both negotiated the distance in time, but Carter, who was on the inside, was struck, barely failing to clear the locomotive.

Carter's body was hurled to the north of the tracks, his neck broken apparently by the force of the impact.  Aside from this, Dr. Norton said that the youth apparently suffered no other serious injury.

E. E. Stroud,, fireman, and I. S. DeFord, engineer of the train, both from Eldon, IA, also testified at the inquest.  Stroud said that he saw the three boys, two on the inside of the rails and the third walking along just on the outside of the track  as the train came around a curve near the Sherman street crossing.  He said that the youth were about 150 feet away when he first saw them.

The fireman said he yelled to the engineer that here were men on the track ahead.  DeFord, who said he had just whistled for a private crossing, testified that he blew the engine whistle again and applied the brakes.  The engineer said that he was on the outside of the curve, and was unable to see the boys until the cab reached the site of the accident and he saw the Carter boy's body hurtling to the north of the tracks.  He said there was a trace of blood on a small step to the right of the locomotive pilot and expressed the belief that this had struck the boy.

The train came to a stop and backed up.  The boy's body had by that time, however, been taken away in the George M. Wittich Funeral Home Ambulance.

Gerald was born, June 20, 1919 in Sweetland township, Muscatine county, and had been baptized at the Grace Reformed Church at Wilton.

He had taken examinations and had been accepted for enlistment in the United States navy and was at home awaiting a call for service when death came.  He made his home with his grandmother, Mrs. Mary Carter, in Sweetland township, since the death of his mother.

Surviving are his father, Fred H. Carter of Muscatine; two grandmothers, Mrs. Amelia Pantel of Muscatine and Mrs. Mary Carter of Sweetland township; a sister, Cleo, and a brother, Paul, both of Sweetland township.

Funeral services will be conducted Sunday at 2 p.m. from the George Wittich Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Harker cemetery.  The body will be taken to the home of his grandmother, Mrs. Carter, this afternoon, and will be returned to the funeral home Sunday for services.

Mary Elizabeth Carter, 85, who had lived in the Muscatine community since the age of three, died at   8:30 a.m. today at Hershey hospital, following an illness of 18 months.

The daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Fred Welsch, she was born Feb. 17, 1867 in Ohio.
She was married Dec. 6, 1888 to William H. Carter at Muscatine. She was a member of the Methodist church and was living at route 2, Muscatine at the time of her death.

Survivors are four sons, Reginald, Sidney, Henry and Fred Carter, all of Muscatine; two daughters, Bessie Morrison and Mabel McElroy, both of Muscatine, one sister, Mrs. Ed Herlien, Muscatine; six grandchildren and eight great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, one son, four brothers, five sisters and one grandchild.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral home. The Rev. James H.  Sloan, pastor of the North Circuit of Methodist churches, will be in charge.

Burial will be in Harker cemetery.

Reginald H. "Pus" Carter, 95, of Bethesda Care Center, died early today Thursday, July 9, 1992 at  Muscatine General Hospital.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday, July 11 at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home with the Rev.   Eldon Davis officiating. Visitation is 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the funeral home. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery with military rites conducted by the American Legion, VFW, and World War I Barracks.

Mr. Carter was born Nov. 20, 1896 in Sweetland Township to William and Mary Welch (Welsch) Carter. He lived his entire life and farmed in the Muscatine area for over 70 years. He was a member of the American Legion.

He is survived by one niece, Mrs. Clarence (Isabelle) Bermel of Muscatine and four great-nephews and two great-nieces.

He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers, two sisters, two nieces and three nephews.

Funeral services for Mrs. Ethel May Cattell, 80 a former Muscatine resident, were held at 2 p.m. today at the Trinity Lutheran Church, Madison, Wis. Burial was also in Madison.

Mrs. Cattell died Saturday at a Madison hospital.

She was born March 7, 1894 in Muscatine and had been a resident of Madison since 1917.

Mrs. Cawiezell, a life resident of Muscatine county, died at 1:30 a.m. Sunday at the Muscatine County hospital, following a sudden illness.

The former Miss Ora Welsch was born in the New Era community Nov. 7, 1887, the daughter of Julius and Mary Welsch.  She attended the Patterson school north of New Era.

Her marriage to Arthur Henry Cawiezell took place Feb. 2, 1909, and the couple lived at New Era prior to moving to Pleasant Prairie.  Their home was on Route 3, Muscatine.  Mr. Cawiezell died July 20, 1951.

Mrs. Cawiezell was a member of the Order of Eastern Star of Wilton and of the White Shrine of Muscatine.

Surviving are three sons, George of Muscatine, Donald at home, and Earl of Davenport; three sisters, Mrs. Katherine McElroy, Muscatine, Bessie Cawiezell, Davenport and Mrs. Mary Dubois, Ottumwa; two brothers, Julius and Frederick Welsch, Muscatine; and two grandchildren, Sharon and Norma, Cawiezell, Davenport.

Besides her husband, she was preceded in death by a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Grete, and a brother, Chester Welsch.

Suicide-On Saturday evening last Mr Levi Chamberlain, residing near the mouth of Pine river, Muscatine County, committed suicide by cutting his throat with a razor, for what reason is left to conjecture.

The following dispatch gives the first news of the death of a former prominent citizen of Muscatine: Des Moines, Iowa, Nov. 5 - Anderson Chambers was one of the first settlers of Muscatine, having come with his father, Wm. Chambers, in 1836, and located on a farm in the eastern part of this county. For many years, beginning some time in the '50s, he and his brothers, William, Vincent and John, were prominent business men of this city, being connected with the firm of Dunsmore & Chambess and Chambers Bros., in the dry goods, saw mill, pork packing and grain elevator business.

For eight or ten years past Mr. Chambers was a resident of Des Moines.

Mrs. Hannah M. Chambers widow of the late Aaron Chambers died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. S. Asper in Eppards Point at 12:45 Sept. 20th, 1916 where she, in company with her daughter, Miss Ida, had come to visit early in July. She had been in poor health for some time, but was preparing to return to her home in Iowa, when on Sept. 3rd she was stricken with paralysis, followed by another stroke on the 13th from which she never rallied. A short funeral service will be conducted at the home of her daughter, Mrs. W. S. Asper, on Friday afternoon at 2 o'clock, after which they will proceed to Muscatine, Iowa, where the remains will be buried beside her husband who preceded her in death seventeen years.

Hannah M. Plumb was born in Camden, N.J., March 13th, 1829 where she grew to womanhood. In 1848 she was married to Aaron Chambers of Camden N.J., the young couple coming to Bloomington, Ill. in 1856 and later to a farm in Pike Township where they endured the hardships of the pioneer life for 25 years. In 1881 they moved to Muscatine, Iowa. Early in life Mrs. Chambers identified herself with the Methodist Episcopal Church and was an untiring worker for the Master through life.  Christianity with her bore the marks of the original. It came down from heaven and its generous purpose was to carry us up thither. Its author was God.

Mrs. Chambers was the mother of five children, namely, Mary K. and Anna W., now deceased, Joseph P. of Sibley, Iowa, Susan, now Mrs. Asper, and Ida of Muscatine. Besides her children and grandchildren, she leaves a host of friends, which her genial, cheery disposition had won to her.

A Telegram received by the News-Tribune late last night from Frank Chambers, at Merriam Junction, Minn., announces that he will arrive in the city this morning with the remains of his father, John Chambers, who died at St. Paul Wednesday. Funeral will be held in the Baptist Church at 2:30 in the afternoon, after which the interment will take place at the city cemetery.

The cause of Mr. Chambers' death was cancer of the bladder, the patient submitting, as a last resort, to a very severe surgical operation at the St. Paul hospital.
The deceased was the youngest of four sons, William, Vincent and Anderson Chambers being his senior brothers, all of
whom are dead. They were pioneer residents of Muscatine, and at one time were the largest dealers in lumber in the city, operating the old Chambers mill. They also operated extensively in pork packing, and were quite successful.
The deceased was about sixty-five years of age.

He will be remembered to all old residents as a man of excellent business qualifications, of strict integrity and honorable in every way. Two children, Frank and Clara, survive him

Died, at his residence, near Tipton, Ia., Aug. 30th, Dr. Mustoe Chambers, in his seventy-six year.

Dr. Chambers has been a resident of Tipton for the last fifteen years, and has maintained a reputation of unblemished character,as a man and as a Christian.

He was born in Staunton, Virginia, Aug. 10th 1790, and spent his youthful days in that city. He served as Adjutant in the War of 1812. After leaving the Army, he studied medicine and graduated at the Pennsylvania University,in Philadelphia. For twenty years he practiced medicine in his native State, successfully and extensively and for nine years his annual income from his profession was five thousand dollars.

In the year 1830, he left Virginia and emigrated with his family to Dayton, Ohio. This was long before the day of railroads, and he made the journey in his family carriage. There he purchased twelve hundred acres in the richest part of Ohio, and spent his time in practicing medicine and managing his farm.

In 1849, he removed to Iowa and settled near West Liberty. He came to Tipton in 1850. He made a profession of religion and connected himself with the Methodist Church about ten years ago. His gentle, manly manners, and his kind and gentle spirit endeared him to all our citizens. His end was peaceful and calm. He said all was right for the future and his hope of heaven was clear. He had seven children who survived him and they all gathered around his dying bed. A large concourse of people followed him to his grave, where he sleeps in hope of a glorious resurrection!

Mrs. Sarah [Anderson] Chambers, wife of Wm. Chambers, Sr., and mother of the Chambers Brothers, died at the residence of M. P. Pace, her son-in-law, about seven miles east of this city, yesterday morning at 5 o'clock. Her age was 78 years, 8 months and 1 day. She was one of the old settlers of the county, and a lady universally esteemed.

The funeral will take place from the Baptist church tomorrow (Tuesday), at 2 o'clock p.m. Friends of the family are invited.

There passed away at 5 o'clock this morning, at his home in this city, one who has figured conspicuously in the history of Muscatine county and city. Vincent Chambers is no more. Mr. CHAMBERS was in his 73d year. He was a native of Indiana and came to Muscatine county in 1838.

For a number of years he lived on a farm in Sweetland township but about 25 years ago he removed to the city and went into partnership with his brothers, William, Anderson and John.  In their various business enterprises, chiefly that of milling and lumber. For a number of years this firm was one of the most active and enterprising in our city. They did an immense amount of business, but misfortunes finally overtook them in the shape of losses by fire, unjust railroad discriminations and other untoward circumstances beyond their control.

The deceased was one of the most active, generous and public-spirited of our citizens.  In politics, he was a Democrat and was in early times frequently nominated by his party for offices of the public trust. In later years he to some degree fell out of line with his party, particularly on the point of enforcement of law, believing in the old Jacksonian doctrine of the supremacy of the government over all factional and partisan interests. In religion, he was a Methodist and particularly in later life was a firm and trustful believer in the efficacy of the atonement, in which he rested peacefully in the view of approaching death.

The immediate cause of death was a disease called by physicians auerism [sic] of the bones, from which he had suffered about nine months.

He leaves a widow and seven children--three sons and four daughters. One of the sons, Louis, lives in Muscatine, Walter  in Denver and John in Glenwood, Iowa. Of the daughters, Mrs. Brown lives in Minneapolis, Mrs. Woodward in Chicago and Mrs. Alex. Dunsmore and Miss Maggie Chambers in Muscatine.

From the Daily of Monday.-The brief item in Saturday's Journal relative to the serious illness of Wm. Chambers, Sr., scarcely prepared the public for the sad termination of the illness of the venerable patient that final dissolution, which occurred Saturday night about 11 o'clock.

Though suffering for a long time from something like paralysis Mr. Chambers had been dangerously ill only two days, having been taken on Friday, from which time he sank rapidly, his case defying the best medical skill. So he breathed his last at the home of his son Vincent, sweetly and peacefully, surrounded, we believe, by all his children save John, whose equally sad duty was to attend the bedside of a dying wife at Leavenworth.

The deceased, who was the father of the Chambers Brothers, was a man among many of his fine frame, physical strengtH, and vigor of intellect in his ripest years. Until the late affliction of his life, he had enjoyed a remarkable immunity from sickness, so much so as to almost encourage a belief in the fable of the Elixir of Youth. The form of Mr. Chambers has been a familiar sight on our streets for nearly forty years-in other words from our city's earliest infancy, and his cheery disposition and hearty greeting rendered him as popular as his person was well-known.

Mr. Chambers had attained the ripe old age of nearly eighty-two years. He was born in North Carolina, June 5, 1793; was married in Kentucky, where he lived several years, then moved to Indiana, where he resided 22 years. Meantime he served with distinction in the war of 1812. In the spring of 1836, he emigrated with his family to Muscatine county, being preceded a few weeks by Vincent, the eldest son. He bought a farm about six miles east of the city and there settled with Vincent. In 1866 he left the farm and came to the city with his son, with whom he remained until his death. Less than a year ago Mr. Chambers was called on to endure one of the greatest afflictions in the loss of his venerable, faithful and beloved wife [Sarah Anderson].

The deceased was so well known to our readers at home, and to many abroad, that an outline of his character would hardly seem necessary. We will only say he was a consistent member of the Baptist Church, one beloved as a father, venerated as a patriarch, and esteemed as a citizen and a neighbor. Peace to his ashes.

A pioneer and honored resident of Muscatine county is no more in the taking from earthly walks of Benj. Chambliss, who passed away at 6:30 p.m. Sunday at his home in Fulton township, death coming as a result of the ailments ever attendant upon old age, he having reached a milestone in life seldom attained, being in his 92nd year.

Deceased was one of the largest landowners in Muscatine county, was born in Greenville county, Va., July 11, 1807, one of a family of nine children. He was reared to manhood in his native state, receiving his education in the subscription schools and subsequently learning the carpenter trade. In 1840 he left his childhood home and emigrated to Marion county, Indiana, where he remained for ten years working at his trade. Thence he came to Muscatine, locating in Fulton
township in 1850, he originally entering 160 acres of land, to which he has added as the years went by, until now his estate is possessed of almost 3,000 acres of valuable farm land in Iowa, Illinois and Nebraska.

He was united in marriage in 1830 to Miss Julia Hill, of Greenville county, Va., to whom eight children were born, the wife and mother passing to the world beyond Jan. 14, 1884. Politically Mr. Chambliss was a staunch democrat, while in private life he was a shrewd, enterprising man of good business ability, yet honest to a fault in all his dealings, he being honored and respected by friend and foe alike, a personage for whose life the world is bettered.

Three daughters and a son survive to mourn his demise.

The funeral is appointed for Wednesday at 11 a.m. from the Pleasant Prairie church, with interment in the Chambliss vault in Fulton township.

Johnnie Chapin, 64, Columbus Junction, Iowa, formerly of Kansas City, died March 15, 1994, at a hospital in Iowa City, Iowa. Services will be at 1:30 p.m. Friday at the Stacy-Lewis Chapel, Columbus Junction; graveside services will be at the Leavenworth National Cemetery. Friends may call from 6 to 8 p.m. today the chapel, where Masonic services will be at 7:30 p.m. The family suggests contributions to the American Heart Association.

Mr. Chapin was born in Clinton, Mo., and lived in Kansas City before moving to Columbus Junction 28 years ago. He was a truck driver, retiring in 1992. He was a member of the Columbus Junction United Methodist Church. He was a Marine veteran of the Korean War and was past commander of the Jarchow-Schroeder post of the American Legion.

Survivors include his wife, Betty Chapin of the home; a son, John "Butch" Chapin, Muscatine, Iowa; two daughters, Tonya Chapin, Marshall, Mo., and Glenda Evans, Camp Lejeune, N.C.; three stepdaughters, Cindy Finke, Columbus Junction, Cheri Ita, Danville, Iowa, and Carla Jenkins, Ainsworth, Iowa; two stepsons, Randy Tiffany, Wapello, Iowa, and Rick Tiffany, Columbus Junction; four brothers, Don Chapin and Ron Chapin of Excelsior Springs, Jimmy Chapin, Warsaw, Mo., and Raymond Chapin, Pleasant Valley in Clay County; three sisters, Marge Leinhauser, Des Moines, Iowa, Cleda Kern, Independence, and Linda Hylton, Pleasant Valley; seven grandchildren; and 16 stepgrandchildren.

Carl A. Chapman, 59 of 719 East Sixth Street, Muscatine died at 6:20 p.m. Tuesday at his home.
Mr. Chapman, a retired employee of the city street department, had been a resident of Muscatine for 40 years.  He was born May 17, 1902 at Keota, IA, the son of David and Dora Miller Chapman.
Survivors are three sons, John, Gerald and Carl Chapman all of Muscatine; four daughters Mrs. Laurel Walker of Arkansas Pass, Texas, Mrs. Bonnie Budick, Miss Betty Chapman and Miss Joy Chapman all of Muscatine; six brothers Harley Chapman of Baldwin Park California, Talley Chapman of Keota, Ernest Chapman of St. Paul Minn., Herman Chapman of Syracuse, NY, Arlo Chapman of Weiser, Ida and Paul Chapman of Letts; two sisters Mrs. Donald Stead and Mrs. Robert Mahon, both of Portland, Oregon; and 11 grand-children.  He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister, and two children.
Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Fairbanks chapel, with Rev. Emmett Barnes in charge.  Interment will be at Greenwood cemetery.

Muscatine - Carl Emery Chapman 60, of Muscatine died Saturday, Jan. 30, 199 at Muscatine General Hospital.
Services will be at 1 p. m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. Dan Robbs of Sycamore Baptist Church will officiate.  Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery in Muscatine.
Visitation will be from noon until 1 p. m. Tuesday at the funeral home.
Mr. Chapman was born on March 16, 1938 in Muscatine, the son of Carl and Dorothy Hayes Chapman.  He married Verda Velma Beach on Oct. 30, 1960 in Muscatine.
Survivors include his wife Verda Chapman of Muscatine, one son Carl Alfred Chapman of Muscatine; a daughter Ruth Chapman of Muscatine; a brother John Chapman of Des Moines; four sisters Laurel Miles of Panama City, Florida, Bonnie Chapman of Muscatine, Betty Solomon of Muscatine. MUSCATINE -- Donald Ray Chapman, 64, died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City.

Services will be at 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Bishop Dan Laughead will officiate. Pallbearers will be Stuart Cordrey, Dennis Whitlow, Jeff Jones, Bruce Sinclair, Albert Bengtson, and Robert Wilson. Organist will be Kayleen Teed and the Riversong Quartet and Jan Bowman will be the vocalists.

Visitation will be from 4-8 p.m. Sunday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. Burial will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery. Memorials may be made in Donald's memory.

Mr. Chapman was born on Dec. 7, 1934, in Muscatine, the son of Lomax and Inez Dutro Chapman. He married Judith Ellen Brown on Oct. 3, 1970, in Long Beach, Calif.

He lived in Muscatine since 1994. He formerly lived in Tipton and California.
He loved car racing, football, camping, sports, and bowling with the Shirts and Skirts. He enjoyed people and was a very friendly man.

He was a bus driver for Great Riverbend Transit.
He was a auto mechanic most of his life and also worked for Chevron Oil Refinery for many years.

Survivors include his wife Judith Chapnan of Muscatine; five sons, Michael Chapman of Arkansas, Terry Chapman and his wife, Tina, of North Liberty, Tracy Chapman and his wife, Kim, and Tony Chapman all of Tipton, and Darren Chapman and his wife, Andraya, of Bellevue; four daughters  Theresa Jones and her husband, Jeff of North Liberty, Tina Sinclair and her husband, Bruce, of West Liberty, Laurie Whitlow and her husband, Dennis, of Muscatine, and Sandra Cordrey and her husband, Stuart, of Muscatine; 12 grandchildren; his mother Inez Chapman Rybin of Tipton;, his mother in-law,  Bonnie Brown of Muscatine; and many nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his father; a sister, Barbara Thomson; a brother, Gale Chapman, a brother in-law Tommy Thomson; and a step-father, Joseph Rybin.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Services for Donald R. Chapman, of Muscatine, formerly of Tipton and California, will be 11 a.m. Monday at the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Muscatine. Burial will be in Muscatine Memorial Park. Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Sunday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine.

Mr. Chapman died Wednesday, Sept. 8, 1999, at University Hospitals, Iowa City. He was employed as a bus driver at Great Riverband Transit. He was an automobile mechanic most of his life and had worked many years at Chevron Oil Refinery.

He was born Dec. 7, 1934, in Muscatine. He married Judith Brown in 1970 in Long Beach, Calif.
A memorial fund has been established.

Survivors include his wife; daughters, Theresa Jones, North  Liberty, Tina Sinclair, West Liberty, and Laurie Whitlow and Sandra Cordrey, both of  Muscatine; sons, Michael, of Arkansas, Terry, North Liberty, Tracy and Tony, both of

Donald's mother Inez was the adopted daughter of Lydia Calista Woodward Dutro, sister of my great grandfather Richard Woodward.

Mrs. Dorothy E. Chapman, 74, formerly of 502 1/2 Mulberry Ave. died Saturday afternoon at Muscatine General Hospital from an extended heart ailment.
Services will be held at 2 p.m. Tuesday at the Riley Funeral Home.  Rev. Carl Reynolds will officiate.  Burial will be in the Greenwood Cemetery.  Visitation is at the funeral home.
Dorothy Chapman was born June 19, 1905 in Muscatine, the daughter of John Henry and Mary Elizabeth Johnson Hayes.  She was a life resident of this community.
Her first marriage to Floyd Carter took place Sept. 23, 1923 in Muscatine.  She later married Carl A. Chapman on June 8, 1931 in Memphis, MO.
Survivors include five sons, Louis Carter and Carl E. Chapman, both of Muscatine, John Carter of San Bernadino, Calif., John Chapman of Burlington, and Gerald Chapman of Mount Pleasant; five daughters, Mrs. Marlin (Laurel) Walker of Panama City, Fla., Mrs. Morris (Emeline) McCallister of St. Petersberg, Fla., Mrs. Donald (Bonnie) Lichtenwald and Mrs. Thomas (Joy) Elshoff both of Muscatine, and Mrs. Ronald (Betty) McCormick of Conesville; 32 grandchildren; eight great grandchildren; one brother, Carl Hayes of Douds, Iowa and one sister, Mrs. Edna Oakes of Muscatine.
She was preceded in death by both husbands, one son, two daughters and a brother.

TIPTON--Funeral services for Mrs. Margaret Rosette Chapman, 84 year old pioneer Tipton residient, were held Saturday afternoon from the Methodist church, the Rev. Leo Wolfe officiating. Burial was made in the Tipton Masonic cemetery.

Mrs. Chapman was born October 8, 1865, and died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Alvin Albert, in Tipton.
Survivors include a son Albert Chapman, her husband Robert having died several years ago.

Pearl A. Chapman, 94, a life resident of Muscatine County, died early this morning at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty.

Services will be held at 1 p.m. Saturday at the Fairbanks-Lamb Chapel. The Rev. Dan Schoepf will officiate. Burial will be in the Overman Cemetery. Visitation will be 6 to 9 p.m. Friday.

The daughter of Cyrus and Margaret Brookhart Fry, she was born July 26, 1889, in Shenandoah.

Her marriage to George F. Chapman took place March 29, 1911, in Muscatine. She was of the Baptist faith and was a member of the Royal Neighbors of America.

Survivors are one son George, of Muscatine; three daughters, Mrs. Robert (Betty) Watters of Opheim Ill., and Mrs. Francis (Dorothy) Carlisle and Mrs. Orville (Gladys) Sterner, both of Atalissa; 10 grandchildren; 15 great- grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, one grandson, three brothers and four sisters.

A memorial fund has been established at the funeral home.

TIPTON, Iowa - Tracy Leon Chapman, 36, 509 Mulberry St., Tipton, died Monday, June 24, 2002, at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, after a sudden illness.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Fry Funeral Home, Tipton. The Rev. Ronald Lashmit will officiate. Burial will be at Tipton Masonic Cemetery, Tipton.  Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established.

Mr. Chapman was born June 10, 1966, in Iowa City, the son of Donald Ray and Mary Louise Holub Chapman. He married Kimberly Jo Zerbe May 20, 1995, in Tipton.

He graduated from Tipton High School in 1984.
He was employed by Universal Co-op.
He was a member of the bowling league in Tipton called the "Outlaws." He enjoyed golf and NASCAR.

Survivors include his mother, Mary Chapman of Tipton; his wife; a daughter, Jenna Chapman at home; two sisters, Teresa Jones of North Liberty and Tina Sinclair of Tipton; and two brothers, Terry Chapman of North Liberty and Tony Chapman of Tipton.
He was preceded in death by his grandparents and his father.

Mrs. Mary Chatfield, 86, lifelong resident of Muscatine and Louisa counties, died at 11 p.m. Thursday at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. M. Janes, 300 Clinton street after a four weeks illness.

She was born in Muscatine county Nov. 12, 1857, the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Levi Corbin and was married to William Chatfield. She was a member of the Methodist Church at Grandview.

Surviving are four sons, Art of Argyle, Ia., Emery, of Muscatine Elmer, of Sweetland township and Harold, of Ainsworth; three daughters, Mrs. Lillie Schr?urs of Muscatine, Mrs. Ella Kelloner of Chicago, and Mrs. Florence  Janes, of Muscatine; one sister, Mrs. Margaret Scott of  Chicago; 14 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren. Preceding her were her parents, her husband one son and one daughter.

The body is at the Hoffman Funeral home and will remain there for services at the Hoffman Funeral church at 2 :30 p.m. Sunday. The Rev. Esmond Lasswell of the Walnut Street Baptist church will be in charge. Burial will be in the Muscatine Island cemetery.

 Alfred E. Chatterton 79, died at 4:00 p.m. Friday at his home, 518 East Eight Street, after an extended illness.

Mr. Chatterton was the son of William R. and Nancy Burgess Chatterton, and was born at Fairport on April 13, 1868. He had resided in Fairport until twenty years ago when he moved to Muscatine and retired. He never married.

Survivors are two brothers William Edgar Chatterton and John Martin Chatterton both of Muscatine. Preceding him in death were his parents, one sister and two brothers. The body is at the George M. Wittich Funeral Home where it will remain for services to be conducted at 3:30 p.m. Monday with the Rev. Judson T. Perkins in charge. Interment will be in the Fairport cemetery.

William Chatterton my half first cousin, twice removed

 Funeral services were held yesterday at 12:30 p.m.
The funeral of William R. Chatterton, who pased away at Hershey Hosptal Saturday afternoon where held yesterday at 12:30 p.m. from the Lutheran Church in Fairport. Rev. A.H. Barker, pastor of Park Ave. M.E. Methodist Church, was in charge of the services. Interment was made in Fairport Cemetery. The GAR conducted their burial ritual at the grave.

WILTON JUNCTION--Neils C. Christiansen, 76, was fatally injured Monday in a car-pedestrian accident while crossing the street near his home.  He was taken to a Muscatine hospital where he died later.

Police said the car was driven by Jack Ellis, Wilton Junction.  No charges were filed.

WEST LIBERTY, Iowa - Genevieve Iola Chown, 85, West Liberty, formerly of Nichols, died Sunday, May 19, 2002, at the Simpson Memorial Home, West Liberty, after an extended illness.

Services are 10 a.m. Thursday at the Sorden-Lewis Funeral Home, Lone Tree. Burial will be at Nichols Public Cemetery. Pallbearers are Timothy Burns, Daniel Burns, Kathrine Olsen, David Burns, Lance McGinn, Amanda Hawker, Jeff Chown, Kelly Chown, Ben Chown and Jennifer Chown. Following the burial, a luncheon will be held at the Nichols United Methodist Church, Nichols.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Wednesday, with a 6:30 p.m. Rebekah's service and 7 p.m. Eastern Star service, at the funeral home. A memorial has been established.

Mrs. Chown was born Nov. 3, 1916, in Joy, Ill., the daughter of David Glenn and Maggie Belle Bixby Brown. She married Louis "Peanut" Wilbur Chown Feb. 11, 1939, at the Methodist parsonage, Muscatine. He preceded her in death in 1990.

Schooled at Clancy Lake rural school, she graduated from eighth grade May 17, 1930, in Aledo, Ill.
She came to Iowa to work.
She and her husband lived four miles south of Nichols. She was a homemaker.

She was a member of Nichols United Methodist Church since 1940; charter member of the women's group now called the United Methodist Women; Rebekah's Lodge since 1938, now the Iowa City Lodge No. 416; Order of Eastern Star since Oct. 24, 1947, now the Emma Beckman No. 445 of Columbus City.

Survivors include two sons, David Chown and wife Barbara of Nichols and Lt. Col. Doug Chown and wife Marcia of Enid, Okla.; two daughters, Wiladine Burns of Bettendorf and Audrey McGinn and husband Paul of Greenville, S.C.; 10 grandchildren, Timothy Burns, Daniel Burns, Kathrine Olsen, David Burns, Lance McGinn, Amanda Hawker, Jeff Chown, Kelly Chown, Ben Chown and Jennifer Chown; five great-grandchildren, Kyle Burns, Lane Burns, Joseph Burns, Kara Hawker and Kamille Hawker; a sister, Vernabelle "Peggy" Mathais of Fruitland; and six nephews, Pete, Jim, Max, Dana, Kevan and William.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a brother, Leland Brown; a sister, Phyllis Jerrel; and a son-in-law, Joseph Burns.

Hunter Christian Chown died January 5, 1999, at Mercy Hospital in Iowa City.
Funeral services were held Saturday, January 9, 1999, at St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Nichols, with Carol Kaalberg officiating. Burial was in the Nichols Cemetery.

Hunter was born January 5, 1999, the son of Todd and Nancy Schmuecker Chown of Nichols.

William Cinnamon, 13 year veteran of the Dixon fire department and for the last two and one half years a fire inspector, died at the Rest Haven nursing home Friday evening after a lingering illness.

Mr. Cinnamon, 63, was a veteran of World War I, a member of the American Legion, the 40-8, and the Dixon Elks.

He is survived by his widow Zelpha, a daughter, Mrs. Pauline Vipond,of La Cruses, N.M., a sister, Mrs. Elizabeth Cradick of Los Angeles, Calif., and three brothers, John, Neponset, Louis, Toulon and Orville, Muscatine, Ia.  He was preceded in death by two brothers.

Funeral services will be held Monday at 2 p.m. in the Jones funeral home.  The Rev. Bliss Cartwright, of the First Presbyterian church, will officiate.  Interment will be in Chapel Hill cemetery.

Betty G. Clark, 50, Odessa, died Sunday, March 16, 1997, at  her home.
Mrs. Clark was born May 31, 1946, in Oxnard, Calif., and had  also lived in Grain Valley before moving to Odessa in 1984. She had been a secretary for Odessa R-7 Upper Elementary and a  former teacher`s aid at McQuerry Elementary School. She had also been employed by Kmart of Blue Springs from 1989 to 1992 and Blue Springs Bowl from 1992 to 1994. She was a member of Calvary Baptist Church, Oxnard, and had attended Calvary Baptist Church of Odessa. She was a former member and secretary of Mother`s Club of Scout Troop 310, Grain Valley.

Her survivors include her husband, Larry D. Clark of the home;  two sons, Duane Clark, West Liberty, Iowa, and Don Clark, Odessa; and a granddaughter, Caitlyn Clark.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday at the Calvary Baptist  Church, Odessa. Burial will be in Memorial Gardens,
Lexington, Mo. Friends may call from 12:30 until service time at the church. The family suggests contributions to the Calvary Baptist Church, Odessa, or to the Kansas City Hospice or to the American Cancer Society. Arrangements are under the direction of the Ralph O. Jones Funeral Home, Odessa.

Mr. Clevenger was born Oct. 6, 1950, in Muscatine, the son of Glen Clevenger and Joan Sands Grim.
He married Kathy Hankins on Oct. 16, 1976, in Muscatine.

He was a Vietnam Veteran serving in the U.S. Army.
He was a member of the Island United Methodist Church and the V. F. W. Post 1565.
He retired from the Fruitland Fire Department.
He retired from Bandag in 1998.

Mr. Clevenger died Tuesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at Faith Regional  Health Services Center, Norfolk. He was employed as a truck driver and security guard at Carpet Mills, Dalton, Ga., and was a custom leather worker. He was born Dec. 3, 1938, in Brainerd, Minn. He married Shirley Longbine.

During the Vietnam War, he served in the Army.
Memorials  may be made to Vietnam Veterans.

Glen D. Cochran, 51, of 515 East College street, resident of Iowa City for 35 years, died at 11:2? a.m. Sunday at Schick veterans hospital in Clinton.

Mr. Cochran had been a patient at the hospital 49 days. Previously he was at the veterans hospital in Des Moines.

He was born October 7, 1898 in Muscatine county, the son of Robert and Julia V. Gable Cocharan.

He was preceded in death by his father.  In April of 1922, and by his mother, in April of 1948. (sic)

Mr. Cochran was a member of the Methodist church, American Legion, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Disabled American Veterans, Loyal Order of Moose and Fraternal Order of Eagles.

He saw army service on the Mexican border and later, during World War I, in France.

Surviving him are one sister, Mrs. Marie Bec, Hollandale Minn; one brother, Russell Cochran, Iowa City; on niece, Doris Jean Beck, of Hollandale and one nephew, Ronnie Cochran, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Beckman's in Iowa City, with Dr L.L. Dunnington, minister of the First Methodist church, officiating.  Burial will be in Oakland Cemetery.

Mrs. Anna E. Coder, 71, a resident of Muscatine county all her life, died at 9 a.m. today at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Opal Amos, 311 Gilbert street, after a year's illness.

She was born in Muscatine county on Jan. 5, 1877, the daughter of James and Jane Mulligan Hacket.
Her marriage to Chester N. Coder, occurred on Feb. 27, 1902, in Muscatine county. Mrs. Coder was a member of the Oak Grove church.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, Marvin H. Coder, Letts, and C. Melvin Coder, Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Amos of Muscatine, one sister Mrs. Belle Rittenhouse, Muscatine; 10 grandchildren.  Preceding her in death were her parents, a son, and daughter in infancy and three brothers.

The body is at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals where it will remain until Monday when services will be conducted at 2:30 p.m. at the Oak Grove church. Interment will be in Jeans cemetery nearby.

She graduated from Letts High School in 1894.

Funeral services for Mrs. Beatrice Coder, 62, will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home with Rev. Leon Knitt officiating. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery.

Mrs. Coder died at 3:45 p.m. Friday at Valley View Manor following an extended illness.

She married Kenneth Coder, Sept. 16, 1933, at Muscatine. She was a member of the First Presbyterian church, P.E.O., Lady Elks, the Geneva Golf and Country club; the Muscatine General Hospital Auxiliary, and a missionary circle of the Presbyterian church.

Survivors include her son, Douglas, of Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Ron (Diane) Stych,  Muscatine; two sisters, Mrs. Vivian Havercamp, Ottumwa, and Mrs. Ruth Phillips, Muscatine;  and four grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband and one brother.

Letts, Ia., July 15----Charles E. Coder, 67, retired rural mail carrier, died at his home here early this  morning.

Mr. Coder was born Sept. 6, 1861, in Ross county, Ohio. He married Miss Nettie E. Paullins, Jan. 10, 1884. Mrs. Coder preceded her husband in death.

Surviving are five children, James Coder, Newton; Lonnie Coder, East St. Louis, Ill.; Mrs. Vinnie Higginbottom, Letts; Mrs. Alta Rasley, Chicago; Mrs. Esther Waterhouse, Oakville. Mr. Coder is also survived by three brothers, F. M. Coder, Omaha, Neb; L. G. Coder, Muscatine; and N. G. Coder, Letts, in addition to eight grandchildren and one great-grandson.

Mr. Coder was a member of the Modern Woodmen of America.

For 23 years he was employed as rural mail carrier from the Letts postoffice. He retired from the  service last October.

Funeral arrangements have not been completed, but it is probable that services will be held at 2 o'clock Wednesday afternoon at the Methodist Episcopal church. Burial will be in Letts Iowa.

Chester Melvin Coder, 69, Wilton, died Friday night at Lutheran Hospital, Mesa, Ariz.

Memorial services are Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.  The Rev. Paul Pennington of Wilton will officiate.  Florence Hetzler will be organist.  Honorary pallbearers are Louis Erwin, Harold Wilkerson, Leonard Eichelberger and Harold "Short" Conley.  There is no visitation.  The body has been cremated and burial of the ashes will be in Oak Grove Cemetery, Cranston.  There will be military rites at the commital.

Mr. Coder was born Feb. 24, 1917 in Muscatine County, a son of Chester N. and Anna Eliza Hackett Coder.  He had lived at Wilton since 1952.  He was united in marriage on Aug. 14, 1937 to Florence Smith at Fredonia.  He was a life member of the Oak Grove Church, and a Navy Veteran of World  War II.  He had been a feed salesman with Moorman Mfg. Co.

Survivors include his wife; three daughters, Mrs. Lloyd (Frieda) Howe, Bedford; Mrs. Merle (Marie) Gronewold, Tipton; Mrs. Kenneth (Doris) Conover, Wilton; seven grandchildren and one great-grandchild.

He was preceded in death  by two brothers and two sisters.

Chester N. Coder, 83, life resident of the Cranston community, died at 7:25 a.m. today at Bellevue hospital following an extended illness. The body was removed to the Fairbanks Home for Funerals.

Services are scheduled at 2 p.m. Monday at the Oak Grove church at Cranston, with the Rev. Donald  Allbaugh, pastor of the Mulberry Congregational church, Muscatine, in charge. Burial will be at Jeans cemetery Cranston.

The body will remain at the funeral home until Monday noon when it will be taken to the church.

Mr. Coder was born Sept. 15, 1871, in Muscatine county, the son of John and Eliza Fry Coder. His marriage to Anna E. Hackett took place Feb. 27, 1902, in Muscatine county. He was a member of the Oak Grove church. He had been residing here at 311 Gilbert street. Prior to retiring he was engaged in farming.

Survivors include two sons, Marvin H. Coder, Letts, and C. Melvin Coder, Wilton; one daughter, Mrs. Opal Amos, Muscatine; 10 grandchildren and 2 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in 1948, one brother, four sisters, one son, and one daughter in infancy.

Clinton K. Coder, 91, died suddenly Wednesday, Dec. 7, 1994, at his home, 1810 Mulberry Ave.

Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at St. Mar's Catholic Church with the Rev. Walter B. Helms   officiating. Pallbearers will be Jim King, Gerry Zimmerman, Don Clark, Chris Lake, Mike Wilson and Glen Coder. Burial will be at the Letts Cemetery in Letts.

Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Riley Funeral Home where a Loyal Order of Moose service will be at 7 p.m.

Mr. Coder was born on May 5, 1903, in Lake Township of Muscatine County, the son of Lemuel G. and  Drucilla Ann Kerr Coder.
He was a lifelong farmer and resident of Muscatine County.
He graduated with the Muscatine High School Class of 1922.
He married Mary J. King on Feb. 6, 1929.

He was very interested in politics and served 10 years as Lake Township Assessor and several years as the township clerk.

He was first chairman of the Corn-Hog AAA committee, elected in 1934. He served on the AAA and ASCS county committees from 1935 to 1940.

After leaving the farm, he was employed at Muscatine Seed and Supply as a salesman.

He had been a member of St. Mary's Catholic Church since December 1928. He was also a member of  the Loyal Order of Moose.

Survivors include two sons, Bernard C. Coder, and Dr. W. W. Coder both of Muscatine; one daughter,  Mrs. Robert R. (Kathleen Ann) Brawner of Hendersonville, Tenn., 10 grandchildren and eight  great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife in June 1970, one brother and four sisters.

Mrs. Druzilla, Kerr Coder, 77, of Letts, who had spent her entire life in this community, died at 1:05 a.m. today at the home of her son, Harry M. Coder, in Lake township. Mrs. Coder had been ill for three weeks, complications causing death.

The daughter of Samuel and Eliza Dix Kerr, she was a born in Louisa county on April 12, 1866, and  was married to Leumel (Lemuel) G. Coder in Muscatine on Oct. 29, 1885. She was a member of the Methodist church at Letts.

Surviving are two sons, Harry M. Coder and Clinton K. Coder, both of Lake township; four daughters  Mrs. Margaret Howell and Mrs. Leta Herrick both of Letts; Mrs. Mildred Chapin of Kasson Minn., and Mrs. Elizabeth Bixler of North Canton, O., a brother Thomas J. Kerr of Yerington, Nev., and 16 grandchildren. Her husband, parents, two daughters, two sisters, and two half brothers preceded her in death.

The time for services is indefinite but the rites will be held at the Methodist church at Letts with the Rev.  Dale Nickelson, pastor, in charge. Burial will be in Letts cemetery. The body will remain at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home until noon Sunday when it will be taken to her home in Letts to remain until time of  services.

Cranston, Ia., Dec. 21.---Mrs. Eliza Coder, who has been in failing health for several weeks, suffering with complications incident to old age, died suddenly at her home near Cranston this morning. Had she lived until Jan. 21, next year, she would have been 81 years old. The funeral will be held Thursday afternoon at 2 o'clock, conducted by Rev. Fay at the Oak Grove church.

She was born in Johnston, Pa., but came to Iowa at the age of 10 years and has lived in this community ever since. She was married to J. H. Coder Feb. 21, 1867. Her husband died 15 years ago.
She is survived by the following children; Mrs. Nettie Meeker of Letts, Mrs. Roy Welsch of Moline Ill., Mrs. Lillie Hackett of Letts, Will Coder of Ottumwa and C. M. Coder of near Cranston. A daughter Mrs. Ella Snyder, died several years ago.

She is also survived by two sisters and one brother, Mrs. Eva Herrick of Muscatine, Mrs. Hattie Epperly of Minnesota and John Fry of Letts.

LETTS -- Mrs. Marvin (Elsie) Coder, 71, Rt. 1, Letts, died at 11:15 a.m. Sunday at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Wednesday at the Letts United Methodist Church. Rev. Robert Gamble will officiate. Burial will be in the Oak Grove Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home after 10 a.m. Tuesday.

Elsie Smith was born Nov. 26, 1905, at Douds, the daughter of Delazon and Ruth Hewitt Smith. She had lived in this community the past 38 years.

She married Marvin H. Coder July 10, 1928 at Douds. She was a member of the Letts United Methodist Church and a former member of the Oak Grove Church, past matron of Eastern Star and a member of the Cedar Grange and State Grange.

Surviving are her husband, two sons, John of Davenport and James of Letts; five grandchildren; two brothers, Roscoe of Buckeye Ariz., and Herbert of Cincinnati, Ohio; and two sisters, Mrs. Forrest (Bessie) Hanshaw of Douds, and Mrs. Melvin (Florence) Coder of Wilton.

She was preceded in death by her parents, a daughter and a granddaughter.

Letts, Iowa--Eugene H. Coder, 75, of Phoenix, Ariz., died Feburary 10, 2000, in Phoenix.

Funeral services were held in Phoenix.  Graveside services will be at 2 p.m. Saturday, June 10, 2000 at the Letts Cemetery, with the Rev. Jim Hughes officiating.  A memorial has been established for the Kidney Foundation of Arizona.

Mr. Coder was born May 25, 1924, in South St. Paul, Minn., the son of Jessie and Harry Coder.  He married Pauline Roskup on Jan. 20, 1945, at Muscatine.

The Coders had been retired in Arizona for health reasons for 22 years.  Previously, he managed the Mount Pleasant Ready-Mix, owned by his father, and later managed the Rose Motel in Washington.

He was a former member of the Washington Rotary Club.
In retirement, he worked as a custodian for the Washington Public Schools in Arizona.

Survivors include two daughters, Margaret Edwards of Mount Pleasant, and Cindy Apostoles of        Phoenix, a son Joseph Coder of Oskaloosa, a brother Francis Coder of Mount Pleasant, two sisters Phyllis Hummell and Pauline Payne both of Phoenix, five grandchildren and five great grandchildren.  He was preceded in death by his parents.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Florence A. Coder, 83, a resident at the Muscatine Care Center, formerly of Wilton, died Wednesday, Feb. 5, 2003, at Unity Hospital, after a lengthy illness.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the United Methodist Church, Wilton. The Rev. Michael Biklen will officiate. Musical selections will be provided by organist Kathy Luethye and vocalist Henry Bentley. Pallbearers are Roger Howe, Glen Gronewold, Kevin Lewis, Rick Gaunitz, Devin Lewis and Mark Lewis. Burial will be at Oakgrove Cemetery, Cranston.

Visitations are 5-8 p.m. Friday at Bentley Funeral Home, Wilton, and one hour prior to services Saturday at the church. A memorial
fund has been established.

Mrs. Coder was born June 28, 1919, in Leando, the daughter of Delazon and Ruth Hewitt Smith. She married C. Melvin Coder Aug. 14,
1937, in Fredonia. He preceded her in death Dec. 12, 1986.

She was a member of the United Methodist Church of Wilton, where she was active in the United Methodist Women and Martha's
Circle.
She enjoyed camping with the Muskee Campers, reading, crocheting and crossword puzzles.

Survivors include three daughters, Freda Howe of Brighton, Marie Gronewold and husband Merle of Clarence and Doris Conover and
husband Kenneth of Wilton; a brother, Herbert Smith of Cincinnati, Ohio; seven grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; a son-in-law, Lloyd Howe; two sisters, Elsie Coder and Bessie Hanshaw; and a brother, Roscoe Smith.

NICHOLS -- Francis L. Coder, 73, died early Monday, May 31, 1993, at his rural Nichols home following an extended illness.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Thursday at the Nichols United Methodist Church.  The Rev. Tim Walker will officiate.  Burial will be at the Nichols Cemetery.  Arrangements are under the direction of the West Liberty Chapel of the Barker Funeral Home where a memorial has been established.

There will be no visitation at the funeral home, however friends may call Wednesday afternoon and evening at the family home, southeast of Nichols.

Mr. Coder was born June 8, 1919, in Muscatine County, a son of Harry M. and Jessie Lewis Coder.  On Aug. 9, 1943, he married Gertrude A. Simpson in Muscatine.

He farmed his entire adult life in Muscatine County.  He had worked for more than 39 year with the A.S.C.S. office.

He was an Army veteran of World War II and a member of the American Legion Post No. 27 in Muscatine
He was a member of the Nichols United Methodist church, the Muscatine Elks Lodge No. 304, and Ducks Unlimited.
He was interested in conservation, nature and RV organizations.

Survivors include his wife, Gertrude; two sisters, Phyllis Hummell and Pauline Payne, one brother, Eugene Coder, all of Phoenix, Ariz.; his step mother, Madge Coder of Mount Pleasant, one uncle, Clinton K. Coder of Muscatine; and several nieces and nephews.

Word was received by Mrs. B. F. Snyder, 601 East Tenth street, today of her uncle, F. M. Coder, 82, of Omaha.  Death occurred suddenly, the message to Mrs. Snyder said, and was the result of a heart attack.

Mr. Coder, who was a brother of L. G. Coder of Lake township, was a former resident of Letts.

Two brothers, Gerry L. Coulter and Jack R. Coulter, Route 1, Muscatine, were killed in a one vehicle accident abut 1:15 a.m. today in Illinois. The accident happened on Illinois Route 17 west of Aledo.
Gerry Coulter, 25, was driving the 1973 GMC pickup with his brother, Jack Coulter, 27, as a passenger.
According to the Mercer County Sheriff's Dept. who investigated, the vehicle was west bound starting to make a curve, turning south, when it started skidding and went off the road on the right hand side traveled through a grassy area and ran head on into a tree stump.
Gerry Coulter was dead on arrival at the Mercer County hospital, Jack Coulter was treated at Mercer County hospital and transferred to Lutheran hospital, Moline,where he was dead on arrival.

A double funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Riley funeral home for Jack Russell Coulter, 27, and Gerry Gee Coulter, 25.    Visitation will be held Friday morning at the funeral. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

The brothers died as result of injuries received in an auto accident at 1:15 a.m. today near Aledo, Ill. Gerry Coulter, DeWitt, was pronounced dead on arrival at mercer County Hospital, Aledo. Jack Coulter, Rt. 1, Muscatine, was pronounced dead on arrival at Moline Lutheran Hospital, Moline.

Gerry Coulter was born on Dec. 17, 1948, in Sheboygan, Wisc. He resided in the area until 1972 when he moved to DeWitt. Mr. Coulter never married. He was a veteran of the Viet Nam conflict, serving with the U.S. Army. He received the Purple Heart for his service. Burial will be in a Soldier's Plot in Greenwood cemetery. Mr. Coulter was employed as a fork lift truck driver for Stolper Industries in DeWitt.

Jack Coulter was born on Nov. 3, 1946 in Sheboygan, Wisc. and had resided in the area since 1953. He was heavy equipment operator for the state highway commission and a member of the Loyal Order of Moose. Virginia Breiner became his wife on Dec. 12, 1964 in Muscatine. She and their children, Sheri and Teresa, survive.

Also surviving Jack and Gerry Coulter are their parents, John and Gloria Marquardt Coulter,; a brother, John Coulter, Jr.; two sisters, Sandra Coulter and Debra Coulter; and a grandmother, Mrs. Joness Coulter, all of Muscatine.

Grover Coder, 34, formerly a Muscatine druggist, but for the past five years employed by the Des Moines drug company, a wholesale house, died at the Iowa-Lutheran hospital in Des Moines yesterday.  He will be buried in Letts, his former home, tomorrow afternoon.
Death followed an operation for an infection of the shoulder. He had been in the hospital one week.

He is survived by his father and mother, Mrs. and Mrs. M. G. Coder of Letts, two brothers John Q. and  Bert Coder of Lakota, Ia., and three sisters, Mrs. H. E. McCormick of Letts, Mrs. Grant Morgan of Cairo  Ill., and Miss Nellie Coder of Letts.

Mrs. L. L. Webster of 208 West Sixth, Muscatine, is a cousin.

MOUNT PLEASANT--Harry M. Coder, 81, Mount Pleasant, died early Saturday morning at the Henry County Health Center.

Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Mount Pleasant. Rev. Neil Cross will officiate. Burial will be in the Letts Cemetery. Visitation is until 4 this afternoon and from 7 to 9 this evening at the Weir-Cookes Funeral Home. Mount Pleasant.

Harry Coder was born July 7, 1897, in Muscatine County, the son of Lemuel G. and Druzilla Kerr Coder.

His first marriage to Jessie A. Lewis took place Aug. 21, 1918, in Muscatine. On Feb. 3, 1973, he was married to Madge M. Shaw in Mount Pleasant. He was a member of the Fellowship Sunday school class, past member of the Mount Pleasant Rotary Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Midwest Old Settlers and Threshers Association. Coder had farmed near Muscatine until moving to Mount Pleasant where he became owner of the Ready Mix and Supply retiring in 1966.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Francis L. of Nichols and Eugene H. of Washington Iowa, two daughters Mrs. Robert (Phyllis) Hummell and Mrs. John (Pauline) Payne both of Phoenix Ariz., seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one brother, Clinton of Muscatine, and two sisters, Mrs. Glade (Mildred) Schapin of Casson Minn., and Mrs. Milo (Elizabeth) Bixler of North Canton, Ohio.

He was preceded in death by his first wife and two sisters.

James M. K. Coder was born at Bainbridge, Ross County, Ohio, Sept. 25, 1814 and died at Letts, Iowa, May 11, 1890, aged 75 years, 7 months and 26 days.  He was left a motherless boy when 11 years old.  From that time his home was with his Grandfather Knight, a preacher in the Methodist Episcopal church.  He often spoke of of feelings of great thankfulness of the kind home which he had there, and of the guarded religious instruction which he received.  He was converted to God in his 17th year, while attending camp meeting, held at New Holland Pickaway county, Ohio, and united with the M. E. church.  From that time until the day of his death he been an honored member of the church of his early choice.

On the 17th of March 1840, he was united in marriage with Miss Brunette Kean.   Their early life was one of hardship and toil, beginning as they did, without any of this world's goods.  Ten children were born to Brother and Sister Coder, six boys and four girls.  One son and one daughter have preceded their father to the Spirit world.  He had the great joy of seeing all but two of his children, converted to God before he was taken from them.  He with his family moved to this vicinity in 1864.  For many years he was sorely afflicted, physically, and after years of suffering was healed of the Lord in answer to prayer.  The latter part of his life was spent in the enjoyment of unusually good health for a man of his age.

Brother Coder was a man naturally possessed with a warm affectionate disposition.  He was always courteous and kind in his bearing.  A man of intense feeling and one who was greatly interested in the welfare of those around him.  He always manifested an intense desire to see his friends and neighbors converted to God, and when he saw them thus yielding their hearts to the Savior, his cup of rejoicing was full to ove: flowing.  He was a man who will not only be missed in his family circle, but greatly missed in the community and in his church.  His presence and sweet Christian spirit were always an inspiration to the minister of God as he stood before the public congregation of the people to declare the words of eternal life.  While his lips are closed in death and we shall not hear his familiar voice again he continues to speak to us in unmistakable tones, "Follow me as I have followed Christ."  Last autumn a tumor, of a cancerous nature, developed in his throat.  From that time he had been steadily wasting away.  In the midst of his sufferings he was perfectly patient, always happy, enjoying very much the company of his friends, and to the last day of his life was praising God for his goodness and saying that the will of God was sweet.  Oftentimes he seemed to have glimpses of the glory which is in store for the Lord's redeemed ones and not only his own being, but the entire room, seemed to be prevaded with the glory of God.  He appreciated most thoroughly the ministries of kindness bestowed upon him by his affectionate family and friends who called upon him.  All through life he was regarded as poor, but died immensely rich, an heir to a kingdom and an incorruptible crown.  He has gone, but his influence will be felt for good all through time.  Pence be to his ashes.

The funeral services were held at the M. E. church, Letts, Iowa, on the 13th inst., at 10:30 a.m.  A very large concourse of people assembled to look for the last time upon the face of their friend and brother.  The sermon was preached by his pastor, Rev. Dr. Johnson.  His text was Psalm 91:16, "With long life will I satisfy him and show him my salvation.

MT.. Pleasant - Mrs. Harry (Jessie) Coder, 70, Mt. Pleasant died this morning at 125 on the way to Memorial hospital, the day of her wedding anniversary.

A daughter of Loren and Ida May Phillips Lewis, Mrs. Coder was born Oct. 19, 1897, in Neosha, Missouri.

On Aug. 21, 1918, she married Harry M. Coder in Muscatine.

She was a member of the First United Methodist church in Mt. Pleasant.  She belonged to a private
prayer group and the West Side Mothers' club.

She is survived by her husband; two sons, Francis Coder, Nichols; and Eugene Coder, Mt. Pleasant;
two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Phyllis) Hummell, Phoenix, Mrs. John (Pauline) Payne, Hedrick, Iowa; one brother, Noah E. Lewis, Chicago; and seven grandchildren, one great grandchild.

She was preceded in death by three sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be held Friday at 130 p.m. at the First Methodist church in Mt. Pleasant.  A private prayer service will be held at 11 a.m. at the Weir-Cooks funeral home, with Rev. Alton Koch in charge.  Interment will be at the Letts cemetery at approximately 330 p.m.

Jill Ann Coder of Walcott, who would have been two years old Wednesday, died at 1:20 p.m. Monday at Mercy Hospital, Davenport, after a brief illness.

The infant daughter of John and Joyce Phillips Coder she was born March, 5, 1958, at Muscatine.

Surviving are the parents; one sister, Janette, at home; paternal grandparents Mr. and Mrs. Marvin Coder and maternal grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sherdie Phillips, all of Letts.

Services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Oak Grove church near Cranston. The Rev. Max Allen will officiate. Burial will be in Oak Grove Cemetery. Arrangements are in charge of the Fairbanks Home for Funerals.

The funeral of John Coder, of near Cranston, who died Saturday, will be held this afternoon at 2 o'clock from the Oak Grove Christian Church near Cranston, Rev. R. Boyce will conduct the services. Mr. Coder was born in Bainbridge, Ross County Ohio and was 70 years, 10 months and 4 days of age at the time of his death.

He came to Iowa shortly after the close of the Civil War. On 21 February 1867 he was united in marriage to Eliza J. Fry, who  survives him. He is also survived by 2 sons and 3 daughters. These are Chester N. Coder of Cranston,  W. H. Coder of Ottumwa Iowa, Mrs. Nettie Meeker of Cranston, Mrs. Lillie Hackett of Letts, and Mrs. Roie Welsch of Cairo Iowa. Another daughter Mrs. Ella Snyder of near Cranston died last April.

Four brothers and sisters also survive. These being S. N . Coder of Leon Iowa, L. G. Coder of Lake Township, and C. E. Coder and N. G. Coder of Letts and Mrs. Sarah Idle and Mrs. Allie Van Horn of  Letts.

He was in the civil war Ninety-first Regiment of Ohio Volunteers. He served for 3 years participating in many important battles and numberless skirmishes. He enlisted in the Civil War August 11, 1862. Serving and a member of Company H. Ohio Vols' Inft. Principal active service was in Virginia and North Carolina. Was in the Battle of Winchester under the command of General Avervill and Crook, who under the leadership of General Phil. Sheridan commanding the federal forces against the leadership of General Jubal A. Earley commanding the Confederate forces. Discharged from service at Cumberland Maryland June 24th.

Kenneth L. Coder, 62, died at 2:05 p.m. Tuesday at Muscatine General hospital following an extended illness. Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. His home was 2012 Shady Lane.

The Rev. Telford Dindlinger will officiate. Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery. Visitation will start after 10 a.m. Thursday.

He was born April 23, 1907, at Fairfield and spent all his life in Muscatine.

He married Beatrice Vetter, Sept. 16 1933, in Muscatine. He was a member of the first Presbyterian church; Triume lodge, Kaabe Temple Shrine, Ellks Lodge No. 304 and Geneva Golf and Country club.  He served as a Director of the First National bank; was a member of the Muscatine Chamber of Commerce, Muscatine Development Commission, and served on the board of that commission. Mr. Coder was Muscatine county auditor in 1933. He was a former owner of Coder Hardware and Coder Home Furnishings.

Survivors include his wife, Mrs. Beatrice Coder, Muscatine; one son, Douglas, Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Ron (Diane) Stych, Muscatine; his mother and stepfather, Mr. and Mrs. Willford S. Blades, Dubuque; and three grandchildren.
His father preceded him in death.

(Journal News Service) Letts---Lemuel G. Coder, 78, who had spent the greater part of his life in Muscatine and Louisa
counties, died at his here at 10:40 p.m. Monday after a one day illness with pneumonia.

Mr. Coder, the son of James and Brunetta King Coder, was born in Pike county, Ohio, Nov. 4, 1858, coming to Iowa with his parents in 1864. The family moved to Letts in 1874. Mr. Coder married Drusilla Kerr on Oct. 29, 1885. Nine brothers and sisters preceded him in death.

Surviving are his wife, and six children, Mrs. Margaret Howell of Columbus Junction; Mrs. Leta Herrick of Letts, Harry M. and Clinton Coder of Muscatine, Mrs. Mildred Chapman of Carson Minn., and Mrs. Elizabeth Bixler of Candon, O. Seventeen grandchildren also survive.

Funeral rites will be held at 2 p.m. Friday at the Letts Methodist Episcopal church with burial in the Letts cemetery. The George M. Wittich Funeral home is in charge of arrangements. The body will be taken to the residence Wednesday morning.

Marvin Coder was born July 10, 1906, in Muscatine County, the son of Chester and Anna Hackett Coder. He was a life resident of this area.

His marriage to Elsie Smith took place July 10, 1928, in Douds, Iowa. He was a member of the Letts United Methodist Church and a former member of the Oak Grove Church. He belonged to the Cedar Grange and State Grange and was past master of the Triangular Lodge No. 245 and was 32nd Degree Mason.

"1896 Oak Grove Church 1963. A church built by the pioneers across the road in the wilderness, to worship God and allay the fears, Ask his blessing and sins confess. They passed the torch from hand to hand, from generation to generation, then here await the promised land and lifes eternal graduation. By:  Marvin H. Coder."

Mary Charles was born in Lancaster, Pa., March 16, 1852, coming to Louisa county with her parents when a young girl.  She was married near Wapello to N. G. Coder in 1872, and their home has been in Louisa county since.

She is survived by her husband; five children, J. Quincy, and Bert Coder of Lakota, Ia., who will arrive tonight, Mrs. H. E. McCarmac, Cedar Rapids; Mrs. Garth Morgan, Rapid City, S. D., and Nellie Coder at home; four grandchildren; two sisters, Mrs. Kate Kirkwood and Mrs. Ida Marshall of San Diego, Calif., and a brother, Joe Charles of Wapello.

Mrs. Clinton K. Coder, 65, of 909 Woodlawn avenue, died at 440 p.m. Tuesday at Muscatine General Hospital after an extended illness.

She was born Dec. 6, 1904 in Lake township, a daughter of Joseph M. and Nellie Hickey King and had been a lifelong resident of Muscatine county.  She was married to Clinton K. Coder Feb. 6, 1929 at St. Mary's church.  Mrs. Coder was a member of St. Mary's Catholic church and of the altar and Rosary Society of that church.

Surviving are her husband; two sons, Dr. William W. Coder of Muscatine, and Bernard C. Coder, who is in the service with the Navy at Rota, Spain; a daughter, Mrs. Robert R. (Kathleen) Brawner of Indianapolis, Ind.; one brother Clarence B. King of Muscatine; and a sister, Mrs. William (Iona) Bueser of Muscatine; There are 10 grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her parents.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a.m. Friday at St. Mary's Catholic church.  Burial will be at the Letts cemetery.

The body is at the Riley Funeral Home, where friends may call starting Thursday morning.  The Rosary will be recited at the funeral home at 8 p.m.

Letts, Ia., July 3.-----(Special)----  Mrs. Nettie Coder, of Letts, one of the most Prominent lodge women in the state, succumbed this   morning at 9:25 o'clock at her home, after several months' illness with internal cancer. Mrs. Coder had
been operated on for the disease at Bellevue hospital in Muscatine during the early spring, but the ill was of too aggravated a nature to be cured and the relief was but temporary.

The deceased woman had reached her forty-ninth milestone in life. She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Milton Paulin, of Grandview, she having been born and reared at the latter place. To survive her, there are her husband and five children, James and Lonnie; Misses Vinnie and Esther and Mrs. Alta Rasely all of Letts. Mrs. Coder was a past president of the Louisa and Muscatine county assembly of Rebekah lodges and would have presided at the recent session held in Muscatine if her health had permitted.

The funeral services will be held from the Methodist Episcopal church at Letts, Friday afternoon with the Rev. P. F. Barker in charge

CONESVILLE, Iowa - Gaylord M. Coffin, 95, of Fort Collins, Colo., formerly of Denver, died Friday, May 19, at the Four Seasons Health Care Center in Fort Collins.

Graveside memorial services will be held at a later date in Conesville under the direction of Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction. Memorials can be left at the funeral home or can be given to the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Coffin was born Dec. 13, 1904, in Conesville, the son of Frederick and Nettie McKee Coffin. He was one of seven children. He attended Iowa State Teachers College and then UCLA, Los Angeles, Calif., in 1927.  He was a member of Phi Delta Theta. He moved to Detroit in 1928, and became public relations manager for the General Motors Corporation where he worked on special projects such as auto shows.

He married Lona Scott Coffin in 1936, in Detroit. Lona died in 1943. He later married Helen Rose Coffin in 1955, also in Detroit. Helen died in 1962.

In 1955, Coffin became Regional Public Relations Manager in Cleveland. He also served as secretary of General Motors' nine plant city committees in the area, supervising radio, television and press relations. He moved to Denver in 1960, where he traveled for the A.A. Martin Company. In 1965, he became Vice President of Villa National Bank, Lakewood, Colo., and before retirement became the Bank Relations Officer for the Small Business Administration, U.S. Government. Then in 1976, he worked as an SBA marketing consultant for Merrill Lynch.

Survivors include his daughter, Gayle Ficara of Danbury, Conn.; a son, Robert S. Coffin of Fort Collins; four step-children, Jack, Donna, Ruth and Donald Meyer; four grandchildren, three great-grandchildren, and hissister, Deborah Gallagher of Greeley, Colo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and both wives.

CONESVILLE, Iowa - Katherine L. Rich Conaway, 64, of Conesville, formerly of Cedar Rapids, died Tuesday, Dec. 11, 2001, at her home following a short illness.

Services are 10:30 a.m. Friday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home in Columbus Junction. The Rev. Patrick Lumsden will officiate. Burial will be at the Conesville Cemetery.

Visitation is 4-8 p.m. Thursday, with a 7:30 p.m. Rosary service, at the funeral home.  Memorials may be made to the Katherine Conaway Memorial Fund at P.O. Box 206 Conesville, IA 52739.

Mrs. Conaway was born June 6, 1937, in Cedar Rapids, the daughter of Arthur and Twila Myers Rich. She married Darrel Conaway Sept. 14, 1990, in Rock Island, Ill.

She graduated from Roosevelt High School in Cedar Rapids in 1955.
She retired from Rockwell in 1999.

She was a member of the Emma Beckman Chapter of the Eastern Star.

Survivors include her husband; five children, Julie Fisher and husband Ed of Mechanicsville,  Robert Cole and wife Sue of Letts, Theresa Vernon of Monticello, Janie Cole of Washington and Sally Graham and husband Don of Hoffman Estates, Ill.; 10 grandchildren; a great-grandchild; six stepchildren, D.J. Conaway and wife Susan of Letts, Kim of Iowa City,  Jan Kelley and husband Dan of Grandview, Charlotte Smith of Iowa City, Karen Sands of Columbus Junction and Missy Troyer and husband John of Lone Tree; 19 stepgrandchildren; a stepgreat-grandchild; a brother, Duane Rich and wife Sandy of Bucklin, Mo.; three sisters, Arlis Sedlacek and husband Pat of Cedar Rapids, Bonnie Christian and husband Gene of Pharr, Texas and Penny Freese and husband Jim of Hiawatha; and close friend, Margaret
Meeker.

She was preceded in death by her parents.

Aristarchus Cone, residing on Section 24, Cedar township, was an honored pioneer of Muscatine county since 1837.  He died at his home yesterday at noon, Easter Day.  Deceased was born in Middlesex county, Conn., Feb. 22, 1815 and was a son of Newell and Ann Cone.  On Oct. 7, 1851, Mr. Cone married Miss Harriet Oaks, daughter of John Oaks.  No children were born to them, but they have an adopted son, William Hunter, who now has charge of Mr. Cone's farm.  Mr. Cone was a Republican.

The interment will take place Tuesday, April 17, services being held in the Christian church, at 2 p.m. leaving the house at 1 :30.

Her life, since coming to Iowa has been spent in Muscatine county with-in a few miles of the same place, and has been as an open book for all to read.  She came of a thrifty stock, and all the varied experiences and necessities of frontier life had a tendency to develop her gifts for usefulness.  Her hands were skilled in all domestic arts and not only useful, but beautiful thins grew beneath her fingers.  Her love for the culture of flowers added many a graceful touch to their rooms and lawn, and was a source of pleasure to her in her declining years.

When Mr. and Mrs. Cone began their life on his beautiful farm, their house was small but always held its door wide open to not only friends, but travelers and strangers, with the large hospitality of the frontier times, and scarcely a day passed without a guest at the board; and few within her reach but have pleasant memories of her cordial welcome and kind ministry.

In early life she united with the M. E, church and remained identified with that society while she lived.  She always manifested a great interest in the church and its prosperity.  The ministers of the gospel were always welcome visitors, and their presence, and prayers and ministry were highly prized.

On the spot where their first rude dwelling was built grew up a beautiful and commodious home.  Trees planted by their own hands grew up to shelter and shade the home of their old age.

Mrs. Cone found great pleasure in the society of her old friends and neighbors, to whom she became more attached as the years went by.  Afflicted in body for some years, she prized the attention and friendship of the companions of her early days more and more and lived to talk over the checkered scenes of the past.  The seclusion in which her last years were largely passed leaves the home still more desolate to her aged husband, and made those dear friends who will sadly miss her presence and companionship.

She leaves her husband, two brothers, and two half sisters, Mrs. Mary Frye and Eve Gates to mourn her loss; also a host of nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.  The pallbearers were all great-nephews of the deceased.  Rev. D. C. Bevan, of Morning Sun, conducted the services at the Christian church, preaching from Rev. 1st 18.  The old hymns were sung. "Jesus Lover of My Soul."  "In the Rifted Rock I'm Resting." etc. and thus with the songs and the services she loved; surrounded by the friends and relatives dearest to her, she was laid to rest in hope, yea, in the assurance of the resurrection life which the springtime typifies and the Easter day on which she fell asleep foreshadows.

Mrs. Lucinda W. Cone was born in Coshocton county, Ohio, December 11, 1818, united in marriage with Beebe S. Cone February 4, 1836, the mother of seven children, four dying in infancy, three sons survive, two of whom are present.

In 1854 her husband removed to Muscatine county, Iowa, where they resided until March, 1884 when they removed to Brule county, Dakota, and there resided until her husband's death, August 4, 1885, since then she has resided with her sons.

She united with the Methodist Protestant church when young and remained a true and consistent Christian throughout life.  She died in Mitchell, Dakota, January 13, 1889, aged seventy years one month and two days.

The deceased leaves three sons--Dr. W.D. Cone of Conesville, Iowa; James W. Cone, attorney of this city; and Dr. Jared E. Cone, of Youngstown, Ohio, the last of whom was not permitted to be present on the occasion of the funeral.

Funeral services were held at the residence of J.W. Cone yesterday afternoon, conducted by Rev. H.E. Wyckoff, who preached from the text "How Beautiful Upon the Mountains are the Feet of Him that Bringeth Good Tidings".

The remains were interred at Kimball by the side of her husband.

Paul Connell was born Jan. 22, 1916, in Wilton Township, the son of Cornelius D. and Edith Newman Connell. He had lived in Muscatine until 1954.
He married Norma M. Witte June 1, 1946, at Muscatine. He was a member of St. Marks Lutheran Church, Davenport, and Iowa Lodge No. 2, AF and Am, Muscatine.
Surviving are his wife and a brother, Ralph, of Muscatine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

Graveside funeral services for 54-year-old Ray Conover of Grandview, Iowa, will be held at 11 am Friday, Nov. 17, 2000, at the Grandview Cemetery, Grandview, with military rites. Visitation will be held from 6-7 pm Thursday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction, Iowa.

Mr. Conover died Monday at the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics, Iowa City, Iowa, after the discovery of a massive brain tumor on Sunday. A memorial has been established at the funeral home for his daughter's education or to his church.

Ray Allen Conover was born July 29, 1946, in Muscatine, Iowa to Jess and Grace Plowman Conover.
Ray was previously married and to this union two sons were born, Randy and James Conover. Ray later married Marilyn Schweitzer, August 6, 1988, in Columbus Junction.

Ray was an Army Veteran. He was currently employed at the HON Co., Muscatine, where he had worked for the past 34 years.

He had been a Boy Scout Leader for many years and loved camping, boating, and wood-working. He loved to watch eagles and feeding the birds, especially the finches. He loved helping people in need.  He was a member of the Muscatine Baptist Chapel.

Survivors include his wife, Marilyn, Grandview; a daughter Jennifer Conover, at home, Grandview; two sons, Randy Conover, Eddyville, Iowa and James Conover and his wife Vickie, St. Joseph, Mo.; two grandchildren, two brothers, Marvin Conover and his wife Carolyn Stanberry, Mo.; and Kenneth Conover and his wife Doris, Wilton, Iowa; a sister, Carolyn Mann and her husband Verlin, Dearborn, Mo.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant sister.

Larrissa Christine Cooley, the 11 day old daughter of Scott and LaShawn Nygaard Cooley, 612 Mulberry Ave. died Saturday morning at University Hospitals, Iowa City.

Graveside services will be Tuesday at 10 a.m. at Greenwood Cemetery. The Rev. Carl Moore of the Church of God will officiate.  Arrangements are under the direction of the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home.

Larrissa was born Aug. 9 in Iowa City.

She is survived by her parents, Scott and LaShawn Cooley; her maternal grandmother, Joan Nygaard of Bismark, N.D.; her paternal grandparents, the Rev. and Mrs. Ken Cooley of Des Moines; and her great-grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Coder of Denver; and Velma Seitz of Muscatine.

Preston Cooley, Muscatine, died about 10 a.m. today at the Muscatine county home after a short illness. Mr. Cooley was taken to the home Monday after he suffered a stroke.

Funeral services for Preston Cooley, Muscatine man who died at the county home here Wednesday, will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday at the Meyers Funeral home by the Rev. F. C. Scott, pastor of the United Brethren church. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery.

Mr. Cooley was born in 1882 and had spent most of his life in Muscatine. He married Sarah Cozad in 1882 and one child was born to them, Pearl Beverlin.  After his divorce from his first wife, he married Mary Luttige and six children were born to them, Betty, Helen, Clarence, Henry, Lawrence and Sophia Cooley. In addition to the children, 10 grandchildren survive.

Miss Effie Cooper, 35, died at 4 a.m. Wednesday in her home in Blue Grass following a lingering illness.
Born in Blue Grass Nov. 11, 1906, she was educated in schools there and had spent her entire life in that community. She was a member of St. John's Methodist church and of the Alberta camp No. 505, Royal Neighbors of America.
Surviving are her parents, Mr. and Mrs. John P. Cooper, at home; a sister, Miss Cleo I. Cooper, also of Blue Grass, and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Nora B. Dodge, Muscatine, Iowa.
The body was taken to the Hill & Fredericks mortuary where the funeral will be held at 1:30 p.m. Friday. Burial will be in the Blue Grass cemetery.

  Eldon Adali Cooper, aged 23, died Monday evening at 8 o'clock at the home of his father, J.P. Cooper, who resides on a farm one and a half miles west of Blue Grass. His death followed a long period of sickness.

The deceased was born Jan. 1, 1893, and had taken up agriculture as his vocation four years ago.
He is survived by his father, five sisters, Agnes Cooper of Fairmont, S.D.; Belle Bohnsach, Stockton, IA; Rose Pahl, Blue Grass; Mamie Stigers, Davenport; Viola Eis, Montpelier, IA; and three brothers, Virgil Cooper, Davenport; Charles, at home, and Perry Cooper, Blue Grass.

Services will be held from the home at 1:30 and from the Blue Grass church at 2 o'clock Thursday afternoon, in charge of the Modern Woodmen of America, of which he was a member. Interment will take place in Blue Grass cemetery.

He was a 77 year member of the Modern Woodmen of America and of the Descendants of Pioneers of Scott County, which he served as president in 1959.
Survivors include a daughter, Mrs. Glenn S. (Cleo) Harvey, Rock Island;  two grandchildren; five great grandchildren, and one great great grandchild.

John Perry Cooper, well known resident of Montpelier township, passed away at the home of his daughter, Mrs. A.E. Stigers, who resides at Nevada Ave. and Rockingham road. Mr. Cooper had been ill for several years.

Decedent was born Scott county, Dec. 9, 1840, and was 73 years at the time of his death. He was united in marriage to Rowena A. Lair, Oct. 24, 1867.  His wife preceded him in death Aug. 3, 1915.
The following children survive: Miss Agnes Cooper of Fairmount, N.D., Mrs. Belle Bohnsack of Stockton, IA, Mrs. Rose Pahl of Blue Grass, Mrs. Mayme Stigers of Davenport, Mrs. Viola Eis of Blue Grass, Virgil Cooper of Davenport and Perry and Charles Cooper of Blue Grass.

Funeral services are announced to be held Wednesday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from the home with services at the Blue Grass church at 2 o'clock. Internment will take place in the Blue Grass cemetery.

Blue Grass, IA, Aug. 4 - (Special.)  Mrs. Rowena Nair (Lair) Cooper, wife of J.P. Cooper, died at 11:30 o'clock last night at the family home, one mile west of Blue Grass.
The deceased was born in Wabash, Ind., Dec. 19, 1849. She was a prominent member of the Baptist church and was generally held in high esteem. In addition to her husband, four sons, five daughters, 20 grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren and one brother survive. The brother is Ben Lair of Pittsburgh, Kan. The children of the immediate family are Agnes Cooper, Fairmont, SD; Mrs. Nellie Bohnsack, Stockton, IA; Mrs. Rose Pahl, Blue Grass; Virgil Cooper and Mrs. A.E. Stigers of Davenport; Mrs. Wil Eis of Montpelier; Perry, Charles and Eldon Cooper of Blue Grass.   The funeral will be held at 1:30 Friday afternoon from the home with services at Blue Grass at 2 o'clock.

LONE TREE--Mrs. Dora Corbett, 81, longtime resident of Lone Tree, died early today at Mercy hospital in Iowa City.
She was born May 27, 1874 at Conesville.  Her husband, Joseph R. Corbett, preceded her in death.

Survivors inclued one son, Bernard, of Lone Tree, and one daughter, Mrs. Phil Slinker, of Des Moines.

Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. Monday at the Lone Tree Methodist church.  Burial will be in the Lone Tree cemetery.

Services for Lois Corrado, 62, of Upper Montclair, an opera singer who performed in major roles in numerous countries, will be held at 10 a.m. tomorrow in the Union Congregational Church, 176 Cooper Ave., Upper Montclair. Arrangements are by the O’Boyle Funeral Home,  309 Broad St., Bloomfield.

Mrs. Corrado, who sang under the name of Louise Russell, died Tuesday in Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center, New York City.

In her concert, opera and recital career, she shared the stage with many vocal luminaries, including Placido Domingo, Luciano Pavarotti, the late Richard Tucker, Robert Merrill, Renata Scotto, Katia Ricciarelli, Alfredo Kraus and Sherrill Milnes.

A soprano, Mrs. Corrado performed at opera houses in North and South America and Europe, including Frankfurt, Stuttgart and Toulouse. In Tokyo, she was the only American in an international cast of Rigoletto with the Lyrica Italiana company, performing the role of Gilda to Luciano Pavarotti’s Duke.

At the Opera Metropolitan of Caracas, she sang the role of Musetta in "La Boheme" opposite Renata Scotto’s Mimi.

She also sang with the Tri Cities Opera in Binghamton, N.Y., and in various summer festivals, including the Colorado Opera Festival, the Aspen Music Festival, the May Festival in Ann Arbor, the Meadowbrook Music Festival and Tanglewood.

She did undergraduate studies and earned a master’s degree in music and sociology from New York University.

Born in Muscatine, Iowa, she lived in New York City before moving to Upper Montclair several years ago.
Surviving are her husband, Richard; a daughter, Mrs. Elizabeth Crane, and a sister, Mrs. Betty Montgomery.

Attalissa---Elmer E.[Ellsworth] Coss, a resident of this community his entire life, died suddenly at his home at 4:15 p.m. Friday after an illness of a few days.

Mr. Coss was born, May 31, 1864 in Atalissa. He married Miss Ida [Mae] Stauffer [daughter of George W. and Susanne Stauffer] on Aug. 31, 1889.

Surviving are his wife and 10 children, Mrs. Hazel DeVore and Emmett Coss of Atalissa, Frank of Cicero, Minn., Earl of Indianapolis, Ind., Scott of Cleveland, Margaret of Salem, Nev., Herbert and Louis of Moscow, Mrs. Fern Morgan of Rochester, Ia., and Floyd Coss of Atalissa. Two children, Oramae and Clifford, preceeded him in death. A sister, Mrs. Daniel Runner, of Pasadena, Calif., also survives.

Funeral services are incomplete. The body was taken to the S. C. Snider Funeral home in West Liberty.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, May 14, at the Lacock Funeral Home in Wilton. The Rev. Paul Pennington of the Wilton
United Methodist Church woo officiate. Pallbearers will be Andy Windenburg, Robert Coss, Larry Coss, Robert Duncan, Merlin Alloway and Michael Alloway.  Burial will will be at the Moscow Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 3 to 8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home where a memorial has been established.
Mrs. Coss was born Feb. 27, 1924, at Moscow, a daughter of Riley and Salina Millage. She married Stuart Coss on Aug. 3, 1946,
in Rock Island, Ill.
She was a member or the Lutheran Church of the Master in Brooklyn Center.
Survivors include her husband, Stuart; one son and daughter -in-law, Gary and Linda Coss of Blaine Minn.; two
daughters, Mrs. Bruce (Ruthann) McTavish of Big Lake, Minn. and Mrs. Mark (Rhonda) Poland of Brooklyn Center; two grandchildren, Scott McTavish and Amanda Miller; and one brother, Wayne Millage of Kentucky.
She was preceded in death by her parents.

West Liberty, Ia., July 13---Funeral services for Phyllis Jean COSS, nine months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Lewis COSS, Atalissa, who died Saturday in Mercy hospital in Iowa City, were conducted Sunday afternoon by the Rev. H. A. LARSEN, Presbyterian pastor, in the Oathout and Beveridge funeral home. She was the youngest of 11 children of Lewis and Olive Conklin COSS.

Surviving are her parents, five brothers, five sisters, her grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Elmer COSS, Atalissa, and her grandfather, Samuel CONKLIN.  Burial was in Timberlake cemetery, Atalissa.

 The funeral of Arthur Coulter, who met his death on Wednesday night on the Rock Island right-of-way near Fairport, Ia., will be held Saturday at Letts, Ia.
The remains of the unfortunate man were removed to his home on East Seventh street this afternoon and at 8 o'clock Saturday morning will be taken to Letts for interment.
The coroner's jury which held an inquest over the remains, late Thursday afternoon, returned a verdict to the effect that the local young man met his death accidentally by falling from a Rock Island freight train near Fairport Iowa.

Funeral services for Frank Pierce Coulter, who died at his home in Eliza township, Mercer county, Ill., Wednesday, were conducted at the home Friday afternoon by the Rev. Caleb Larson, of Illinois City. Burial was in the Reynolds cemetery.

Pallbearers were Frank Elff, Harold Coulter, John Spitznogle Floyd Coulter.
Mr. Coulter was born Feb. 23, 1879 in Rock Island county Drury township, the son of Jane Ann  and William Jams Coulter.

Surviving are his widow; four children, Russell Loyd, 9;  Boyd Victor, 6; Merle Pierce,4; Margie Rose, one and one-half years;  two brothers John Coulter, Muscatine, and Leonard, Eliza, ILL., a sister Mrs. Della Snyder, Muscatine. Preceding him in death were fur brothers and a sister, William Belle, Wilson, Loyd and Ernie, the latter's death being on Feb 17, 1931.

Mrs. Coulter died Monday at University Hospitals in Iowa City.
Pallbearers will be Jerry Lee, Larry Lee, Tom Lee, Gordon Esmoil, Mark Esmoil, and Howard Kerfoot. Vada Timm will play the organ.  Visitation will be at the funeral home from 1-9 p.m. Thursday and Friday after 9 a.m.  Memorials may be left to the Lutheran Homes.

She was born the daughter of Herman and Elsie Zastrow Marquardt at Sheboygan, Wisc. on May 3, 1928. She had lived in Muscatine since 1953. She married John Henry Coulter on June 12, 1953 at the Zion Lutheran Church in Muscatine.

She had worked as a certified nurse's aide at the Lutheran Homes, Muscatine General Hospital, Weber Button Co., and in private duty. She was of the Lutheran faith.

Survivors include one son, John Coulter, Jr., Muscatine, and two daughters, Sandra Garcia and Debra Coulter, both of Muscatine; and one brother, Arthur Marquardt, of Sheboygan, Wisc. Four grandchildren also survive her.  She was preceded in death by her husband on June 8, 1989; two sons, one sister and her parents.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Hilda M. Browning Coulter, 82, died Friday, Aug. 17, 2001, at Lutheran Homes.

Graveside services are 10 a.m. Wednesday at the Conesville Cemetery. Pallbearers will be Jason Dipple, David Barquest Jr., Kevin Berry, Darrell Conaway Jr., William "Bill" Berry, Jim Snyder, Randy Browning, Theodore Claire Browning, Amber Lautier, Angela Boris and Rachelle Browing.

Visitation is 4-7 p.m. Tuesday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Memorials may be made to the Hilda Coulter Memorial Fund.

She was born July 15, 1919, in Andalusia, Ill., the daughter of Frank and Jenny Spitznogle Kane. She married Emmel Browning January 1940.

She was a button-cutter and later worked as a home health aide.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her twin sister, one sister in infancy, one brother,  Clayton Kane, and one great-granddaughter.  Survivors include two sons, Clayton "Ted" Browning of Jefferson and Larry E. Browning of Muscatine; two daughters, Nancy Conaway of Dunnellon, Fla., and Patricia Snyder of Grandview; 16 grandchildren; 40 great-grandchildren and five great-great grandchildren.

Jane Ann Beeney, daughter of Wilson and Isabel Beeney, was born in England February 2, 1846 and died at the home of her son Frank Coulter, of Eliza at 10 o'clock Wednesday morning, June 11, 1913. She came to America with her parents, sisters, and one brother, in 1855 and lived in St Louis for four years. Then she moved to Rock Island county and has since resided there.

She was  married to William Wray in  1861 who died in 1863. She afterward was united in marriage to William Coulter on May 10th 1865.  To this union was born nine children. She leaves to mourn her loss four sons and one daughter, John, Frank, and Leonard of Eliza township; Ernest of Rock Island and Mrs. Della Cozad of Iowa. William Belle, Wilson and Lloyd preceded her in death. She also leaves 12 grandchildren and many other sorrowing relatives and friends.

She became a member of the Baptist church in 1870. She was a good woman and her children rise up and call her blessed. She hath done what she could.

The funeral was held Thursday morning at 10 o'clock from the home of her son Frank. There was a large attendance and many beautiful flowers. Rev. W. L. Barnes conducted the service.

Leonard E. Coulter, 83, 312 Canon Ave., died early Saturday morning at Muscatine General Hospital following an extended illness.
Services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Riley Funeral Home. The Rev. LaVern Hubbard, pastor of the Fruitland Baptist Church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Drury Reynolds Cemetery, Rock Island County Ill. Visitation is today at the funeral home.

The son of John and Lillie Cozad Coulter. He was born Jan. 1, 1900, in Drury Township, Rock Island County, Ill.  He was a life resident of the surrounding area.  His marriage to Anna Louise Hays took place June 1, 1943, in Canton, Mo.

Mr. Coulter had been employed at Heinz USA for almost 15 years, retiring in 1965.

Survivors include his wife; one daughter, Linda Cady of Cedar Rapids; four grandchildren; one great-granddaughter; one brother, Lester of Muscatine; and three sisters, Mrs. Joe (Grace) Bair of Davenport and Mrs. Elmer (Nettie) Harmon and Mrs. Myrtle VanEst, both of Muscatine.  He was preceded in death by three brothers, two sisters and one granddaughter.

MUSCATINE---Lester Vernon Coulter, 78, of 1605 First Ave., died Thursday, July 24, 1997, at his home.
Services will be 1 p.m. Monday, at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Rev. Sharon Lacey will officiate. Burial will be with military rites conducted jointly by the American Legion and the Veterans of Foreign Wars, will be at the Muscatine Memorial Park Cemetery.  Visitation will be from noon until 4 p.m. Sunday, at the funeral home.

Mr. Coulter was born on May 14, 1919, in Muscatine, the son of John Otis and Lilly Cozad Coulter, He married Nellie May Steckman on March 19, 1939, in Muscatine.
Following 28 years of employment, he retired form Thatcher Plastics.
He was a U.S. Navy veteran of World War II.
He was a past president of the Fraternal Order of Eagles Lodge, No. 815, Local 376 International Chemical Workers Union, and a past co-chairman of the United Way.

Survivors include two daughters, dolly Marie Hayes of Bentonville, Ark., and Lillie Mae Oelerich of Muscatine; nine grandchildren, 19 great-grandchildren, and two great-great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, in 1967; eight brothers and sisters and one grandson.

Mrs. Lillie Coulter, 79, died at 6 p. m. Friday at the Lipplegoes nursing home where she had lived the past two and one-half years.  She formerly resided at 1611 Lincoln Blvd.

Mrs. Coulter had been a resident of Muscatine for 43 years. She was born Sept. 17, 1882, at Geneseo, Ill., the daughter of Job Cozad and Margaret Jane Shaw Cozad.  She was married March 19, 1898, at Rock Island, to John Otis Coulter. He preceded her in death in 1953.

Survivors are nine children  Leonard, Jessie, Lester and Kenneth Coulter, all of Muscatine; Mrs. Grover Burts, Mrs. George Harmon, Mrs. Harvey Van Est, all of Muscatine, Mrs. Joe Bair of Davenport and Mrs. Peter Whitlow of Long Beach Calif.; one sister, Mrs. Sarah Brown, Muscatine; 40 grandchildren, and 47 great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p. m. Monday at the Fairbanks chapel. Talmadge Murphy of the First Church of Christ will officiate.

Interment will be at the Drury-Reynolds cemetery.

Pearl Egel was born April 2, 1907 at Blue Grass, the daughter of Henry and Kate Koeppe Egel.  She had lived in Muscatine over 50 years.   She married Jesse Coulter in 1926.

Jr. of Simi Valley, Calif.; Richard L. of Muscatine, Larry L. of Syimar, Calif. and Steven C. of Muscatine; seven daughters, Mrs. Lewis (Genevieve) Lee of Muscatine, Mrs. Virgil (Dorothy) Zaehringer of Muscatine, Mrs. Leland (Rosie) Rector of Muscatine, Mrs. James (Barbara) Mallder of Smith's, Bermuda, Mrs. Donald (Sandra) Mallder of Andalusia, Ill., Mrs. Orval  (Judy) Esmoil of Muscatine, and Mrs. Michael (Linda) Esmoil of Atalissa; 31 grandchildren; and seven great-grandchildren; and a sister, Mrs. Sadie Cozad of Blue Grass.   She was preceded in death by her husband, a son, two brothers, a sister, four grandchildren and her parents.

Mr. Robert Lee Countryman of Tipton, died May 11, 1999, at Mercy Hospital, Iowa City, following complications of
surgery.  Services were held Friday, May 14, at Fry Funeral Home in Tipton, with Rev. Ron Lashmit officiating. Burial with military services was at the Tipton Masonic Cemetery.  Memorials may be made to Camp Courageous of Iowa and
Tipton Ambulance Service.

Casket bearers were Lee Countryman, Tracy Countryman, Matthew Countryman,Tony Countryman, Scott Countryman, Ray Eserhaut, Terry Countryman, Douglas Countryman. Honorary casket bearers were: Joe McElhinney, Don Marion, and Dale Cantonwine.

Mr. Countryman was born May 24, 1924, in Tipton, the son of Lee Floyd and Elsie Mae Yetter Countryman. He
graduated from Tipton High School in 1942. He married Grace Irene Seys on June 1, 1947, at Trinity Evangelical
Lutheran Church, Tipton. He was a carpenter for 30 years and later worked for HON in Muscatine until retirement. He
was a member of the American Legion and the VFW. He served in the Army during World War II from July 1943 to
October of 1945.

Survivors include his wife, Grace Countryman; a son, David Countryman of Tipton; daughters Carol (husband, David)
Bradley of West Liberty, Nancy (husband, Dan) Pruess of Marshalltown, and Camellia (husband, Jim) Trcka of Tipton; grandchildren Erin, Autumn, Christopher, Sonia, Dale II, James, and adopted grandchild Megan Hayslett; brothers, Hilbert Countryman and Clarence Countryman; and a sister, Blanche Bowman.

He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers, sisters, and a grandson.

Mr. Adam Courtney was killed by a stroke of lightning about two miles north-east of this city, between two and three o'clock yesterday afternoon.  He was engaged in plowing and a shower having cometh, he sought shelter under a hickory tree in the field.  The lightning first struck the tree and descending upon Mr. C., passed down from the back of his head to his feet, scorching and brusing his person considerably, and tearing his boots to pieces.  He must have been killed instantly, as he was dead and his clothing had taken fire when Mr. Hiram Gilbetrt, who was standing about 20 yards distant, came to his assistance.  One of the horses attached to the plow was also killed; the other ran away.

Mr. Gilbert states that he looked toward Mr. Courtney immediately after the flash of lightning and saw him leaning against the tree and both horses were down.  His attention was then called to his own horses, which became frightened, and when he next looked, Mr. Courtney was down and one of the horses was up.  This horse was uninjured and seemed to have been only stunned.

The deceased man was about 35 years of age, and left a wife but no children.  He was highly esteemed and respected and an exemplary member of the M.E. Church.

Mildred "Mickey" Coyner, 91, formerly of 1049 Stone St., Muscatine, died Thursday, Nov. 7, 2002, at Lutheran Homes, Muscatine. Services  will be 11 a.m. Monday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home, Muscatine. Visitation is one hour before the service. Burial will be in  Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine.

She was employed 25 years as a  nurse’s aide at Muscatine General Hospital. Mildred Hartung was born  Dec. 13, 1910, in Muscatine. She married Robert Coyner in 1935 in  Aledo, Ill. He died in 1996.

Survivors include daughters, Fontayne  Ziegenhorn, Muscatine, and Renee Cameron, Rochester, Minn.; sons,  Kenton "Sonny," Muscatine, and Lynnce Coyner, Peoria, Ill.; nine  grandchildren; and a great-grandchild.

Her marriage to Harry Cozad took place Jan. 16, 1934, in Muscatine. She was member of Zion Lutheran Church.
Survivors include one son, Douglas A. Cozad of Conesville; five daughters, Mrs Kenneth (Beverly) Herlein of Atalissa, Mrs. Wayne (Beatrice) Wachs of LaSalle, ILL., and Cheryl Cozad, Linda Cozad and Sandra Cozad, all of Muscatine; 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren, one great great grandchild; and one  brother, William Roester of Muscatine.

Betty Ann Cozad was born Feb 11, 1939, in Tipton, the daughter of James and Grace (Wagner) Thurston. A former resident of Tipton, she had lived in Muscatine for the past 25 years.
Her marriage to Donald Lee Cozad took place Aug 14, 1954 in Wapello.

MUSCATINE - Clifford W. Cozad, 75, of 114 Sherman St., died Thursday Nov. 19, 1998, at Muscatine General Hospital.
Services will be 130 p. m. on Monday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. Rev. Shirley Rozendaal of the Musserville  United Methodist Church will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Verl Holtz, Harold Marx, Bob Reynolds, Walt Ryder, Dr. Eugene Shay, and Denny Dieckman. Burial  will be in Greenwood cemetery with a military Service provided by the combined squads of the American Legion and the V. F. W.  Visitation will be from 2 - 6 p. m. on Sunday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the American Diabetes Association.

Mr. Cozad was born on Sept. 27, 1923 in Muscatine, the son of George E. and Dorothy L. Downey Cozad. He married Velma A. Conner on Feb. 26, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland.

He worked for Alcoa for 33 years, retiring in 1989.
He was a member of the V.F.W.,  the Moose Lodge No. 388, and the Alcoa Retired Club.

Survivors include his wife, Velma Cozad of Muscatine; three sons, Ron Cozad and his wife Peggy of Muscatine; Dennis Cozad and his wife, Trena of Little Rock, Ark.; seven grandchildren; eight great grandchildren and three sisters Colleen LaRue, Corrine Marx and Florine Ramer, all of Muscatine.

Mr. Cozad was born Jan 16, 1955 in Muscatine, a son of Donald Lee and Betty Ann Thurston.  He married Connie Smith on June 3, 1978 in Muscatine.
He was a plumber and worked at Hometown Plumbing of Bettendorf.
Survivors include his wife, Connie, one son, Michael Steahr of Muscatine, one daughter, Katie, at home; his father Donald Lee Cozad of Muscatine; and two sisters, Brenda Burch of  Savannah, Ga.; and Judy Layman of Muscatine.
His mother precedes him in death.

CONESVILLE--- Mrs. Esther Cozad, 79, of Conesville, died at 9:40 p.m. Tuesday at the University Hospital, Iowa City, following a short illness.

Services will be held at 10 a.m. Thursday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction.  Interment will be in Greenwood cemetery, Muscatine. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. today at the funeral home.

Esther Cozad was born Aug. 25, 1895, the daughter of Christine and Dorothy (Scafer) Klopp, in Muscatine.  She married Sam Cozad on Oct 12, 1963 in Nichols. A former resident of Detroit, Mich.,  she had been a resident of Conesville for 12 years. Mrs. Cozad had been a member of the Conesville United Methodist Church, and the Eastern Star in Nichols.

Surviving are one son, Richard Connell, Detroit, Mich.; three grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband on Jan. 1, 1975 and her parents.

George Cozad, 83 1408 Nebraska St., died Wednesday evening at Muscatine General Hospital.

Services will be held at 10 a. m. Saturday at the Ralph J. Witich Funeral Home with the Rev Jay Turner officiating. Burial will be in the Greenwood cemetery. Visitation will be 3 to 8 p. m. Friday.

The son of Miles and Ella Edwards Cozad, he was born Dec. 28, 1900 in Cheney Wash. He had resided in Muscatine for the past 78 years.

He first married Dorothy Downey, and she preceded him in death. On Oct. 9, 1948, he married Marie Rann in Muscatine. He was a member of the Musserville United Methodist Church. Mr. Cozad had been a long time employee of the Roach and Musser Co.

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Robert of Napa Valley, Ariz., and Clifford of Muscatine; three daughters, Colleen Larue, Mrs. Harold (Corrine) Marx and Florine Ramer, all of Muscatine; 18 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one great-great-grandchild.  He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and an infant daughter.

Harry H. Cozad, 82, of 811 E. Fifth St., died early today, Wednesday, April 7, 1993, at Muscatine General Hospital.
Services will be at 10 a.m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. Terry Plocher will officiate. Pat Dilts will be organist. Pallbearers will be Wayne Wachs, Craig Wachs, Brian Wachs, Harry Herlein, Steve Herlein, and Harry Etter Jr. Honorary pallbearers will be Kenny Herlein Jr. and Robert Jarr. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.
Visitation will be from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday. Memorials may be made to the American Heart Association.
Mr. Cozad was born Nov. 19, 1910, at Cambridge ILL., a son of Sydney and Della May Coulter Cozad. He had lived here for most of his life. On Jan. 16, 1934, he married Anna Arnold in Muscatine.
He had previously attended the Musserville United Methodist Church.
He had worked as a machine operator for Kent Feed for 30 years.
Survivors include his wife, Anna; one son, Douglas A. Cozad of Muscatine; five daughter, Mrs. Kenneth (Beverly) Herlein of Atalissa, Mrs. Wayne (Beatrice) Wachs of La Salle, ILL., and Cheryl Cozad, Linda Cozad and Sandra Cozad, all of Muscatine; 15 grandchildren, 24 great grandchildren one great-great-grandchild; one sister, Birdie E. Burzell of Muscatine.
He was preceded in death by his parents, four brothers and two sisters.

Conesville-- Mrs. Sam Cozad, formerly a resident in this area for over 20 years, died Thursday at her home in Denver.
The body was being returned to Columbus Junction where arrangements are pending at the Story funeral home.
Surviving are daughters Mrs. H.J. (Esther) Blackwelder, New Orleans; Mrs. Merrill (Ruth) Kemp, Denver; and Mrs. W. E. (Virginia) Wheeler; and one sister. She also had nine  grandchildren.
She was preceded in death by a daughter, Mrs. Fouts, who was killed in an auto accident near Greeley, Colo., in 1962.

J. Frank Cozad, 64, of route 1, Atalissa, died at 12:30 p.m. Thurdsay at Muscatine General Hospital after a short illness.

A son of William Joseph and Mary Bell Thorp Cozad, he was born May 2, 1907, in Rock Island county ILL. He had lived most of his life  the Atalissa area.
J Frank Cozad married Gertrude Helen Williams, Sept. 17, 1930 at Washington, Iowa. He was member of the Foursquare Church.
Survivors include his wife, Gertrude at home; a son James F. Cozad Jr., Little Rock Ark.;  six daughters, Mrs. Jerry (Madline) Black, and Mrs. Raymond (Gertrude) Coleman of Nichols, Mrs Donald (Joann) Baker, Columbus Ga., Mrs. Dave (Maybelle) Lucas, Muscatine, Mrs. Ray (Alma Lou)  Dennison, Broomfield Colo., and Mrs. Deborah Blakely, Atalissa; one brother, Raymond Cozad, Muscatine, 17 grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

Rt. 1 Nichols.  Mrs. Cozad died at 4:10 p.m. Monday at Muscatine General Hospital. Burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery.

She was the daughter of William and Mattie Stubblefield Streat, born Nov. 20, 1909, at Duvalls Bluffs, Ark. She had been a resident of the Nichols and Muscatine area most of her life.  She was married July 22, 1929, in Muscatine to William C. Cozad.

Mrs. Cozad is survived by her husband; one son, Richard A. Cozad, Muscatine; one daughter, Mrs. Pete (Sharon) Thorndyke, Nichols; two brothers, William Streat and Pete Gilleland, both of Muscatine; one sistr Mrs. Herb (Katherine) Wilson, Davenport; eight grandchildren; and nine great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son who died in Vietnam; and a grandson.

Mrs. Margaret Jane Cozad, 93, who is survived by 145 descendants, died at her home, 413 West Fourth street, at 1:30 Wednesday afternoon, after an illness with complications resulting from advanced age. Mrs. Cozad had made Muscatine her home for the past 15 years.

She was born in Whiteside county, Ill., July 28, 1836, the daughter of Sidney Shaw and Minnie Springer Shaw. She was married to Job Cozad in Henry county, Ill., in 1885. He died about 40 years ago. She was a member of the Wrayville, Ill., Methodist Episcopal church.

Surviving are three sons, John of Sheeny, Wash., Miles of Muscatine and William of Wapello; five daughters, Mary Taylor, Charity Lewis and Lillie Coulter, all of Muscatine; Minnie Beckett of Davenport and Sarah Coulter of Fairport; 39 grandchildren, 91 great-grandchildren and seven great-great-grandchildren. Three children preceded her in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Fairbanks Home for Funerals at 1 o'clock Friday afternoon by the Rev. Benjamin F. Schwartz, pastor of the First Methodist Episcopal church. Burial will be in the Reynolds cemetery in Illinois.

Mrs. Margaret Sarah Cozad , 64, of 1002 Illinois St., died Tuesday evening at Muscatine General Hospital following an extended illness.

Services will be Thursday at 1:30  p.m. at the George M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home with the Rev. A.A. Buntenbach of the Glad Tidings Church officiating. Burial will be in Greenwood cemetery. Visitation at the funeral home will be today until 9 p.m. and until time of service Thursday.

Mrs. Cozad was born April 16, 1918, in Wapello, the daughter of John and Mary Saultz Ellis. A life resident of the area she married Raymond G. Cozad on Aug. 4, 1933, in Muscatine. She was formerly employed by J&K Button Company.

Surviving are four sons, Billie Joe, Donnie, Richard, and Scott,all of Muscatine; three daughters of Muscatine, Mrs. Donald (Wanda) Shoultz, Mrs. Mary Lou Hinden and Mrs. Albert (Geri) Stecher; 20 grandchildren; 15 great-grandchildren; a brother Floyd Ellis of Muscatine; and three sisters Mrs. Wilbur (Florence) Patterson and Mrs. Mary Burch, both of Muscatine, and Mrs. Edward (Maxine) Hake of Winterhaven, Fla.
She was preceded in death by her husband, a daughter, four sisters, three brothers and a granddaughter.

Marie E. Cozad 90, of Bethesda Care Center in Muscatine, died Friday, Nov. 6, at Muscatine General Hospital.
Funeral services will be held Monday, Nov. 9, at 1:30 p.m. at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. the Rev. Terry Plocher of the Musserville United Methodist Church will officiate.

She is survived by her step son Clifford Cozad of Muscatine, step daughters Colleen LaRue of Muscatine, Mrs. Harold (Corrine) Marx of Muscatine, Florine Ramer of Muscatine, 18 grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and five great great grandchildren.
She was a member of the Musserville United Methodist Church. She was preceded in death by both husbands, two brothers and one step son.

Miles Clinton Cozad, 73, 738 Ohio street, died at 930 p. m. Thursday at the home of his granddaughter, Mrs. Evaline Law, 637 Demorest avenue, after an illness of two weeks from complications resulting from advanced age.

Mr. Cozad was born June 27, 1861, in Henry county Ill, but he had made his home for 24 years in Muscatine. Prior to that time he had resided in Cheney, Wash. Mr. Cozad married Ella Edwards in 1889 in Kansas. He was a member of the Christian church of Cheney Wash.

Surviving  are one daughter Mrs. Lillie Gasswint, Muscatine, three sons, George of Muscatine John of Spokane, Wash., and Sam of Nichols; five sisters, Mrs. Minnie Becket of Rock Island, Mrs. Mary Taylor, Mrs. Charity Lewis, Mrs. Lillie Coulter, and Mrs. Sarah Brown, all of Muscatine; two brothers John Cozad, Cheney Wash., and William of Muscatine; 13 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 130 p. m. Sunday at the Musserville Methodist Eplacopal church by the Rev, W. H. Slack pastor. Burial will be in the Reynolds cemetery in Drury township Ill. The body will remain at the Hoffman Funeral home until time for services.

Raymond G. Cozad, 71 Rt. 1, Nichols, died Saturday at Muscatine General Hospital.
Services were held at 1:30 p.m. today at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. A.A. Buntenbach officiated. Burial was in the Island Cemetery.
The son of William J. and Belle Thorpe Cozad, he was born May 30 1911, Loraine Township, Henry County, Ill.  He had resided in the surrounding area since 1914.
His marriage was to Margaret Ellis. He was a member of the Moose Lodge No. 388. Mr. Cozad had been employed by Acme and Northern Gravel Co. before his retirement and had been a commercial fisherman.
Survivors include his wife; four sons, Billy Joe, Donnie, Richard, and Scott, all of Muscatine; three daughters, Mrs. Donald (Wanda) Shoultz, Mrs. Mary Lou Hinden and Mrs. Albert Stecher, all of Muscatine; 19 grandchildren; and 14 great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by two brothers, one sister and a daughter.

Robert M. Cozad, 72, of 1206 Kansas St., died Friday, Dec. 7, 1990, at Veterans Hospital, Iowa City.
Memorial graveside services will be Wednesday, Dec. 12, 1990, at 3 p.m. at Greenwood Cemetery in the solidiers section. The Rev. Terry Plocher will officiate.  The Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements. There is no visitation.

Mr. Cozad was born Feb. 19, 1918, in Muscatine a son of George and Dorothy Downey Cozad.
Survivors include a son,William Cozad, of Anaheim Hills, Calif,; three daughters, Mrs. David (Janet) Schneider, of Palo, Iowa: Carol, Orrill, of Bell Flower, Calif.; and Mrs. Steven (Donna) Bright, of Downey, Calif.; six grandchildren; his stepmother, Marie Cozad of Muscatine; his brother, Clifford W Cozad, of Muscatine; and three sisters, Colleen LaRue, of Muscatine; Mrs. Harold (Corrine) Marx, of Muscatine; and Florine Ramer, of Muscatine.

CONESVILLE-Services for Samuel E. Cozad, 78, Conesville, who died Wednesday afternoon at Veteran's Hospital, Iowa City, will be held Saturday at 10 a.m. at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral home, Columbus  Junction.
Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery, Muscatine. Friends may call at the home after-noon Friday.
Born Dec. 1, 1896, he was son of Miles and Ella Edwards Cozad.
A veteran of World War I, Mr. Cozad was for years a county road maintainer-operator and a farmer. He was a member of the Conesville United Methodist Church and Nichols Masons and OES.
He married Helen Klopp of Muscatine Nov. 10, 1919, who died Jan 17, 1963.
On Oct 12, 1963 he married Esther D. Klopp Connell, who survives.
Other survivors include three daughter, Mrs. (Esther) Harry Blackwelder, Glenview, ILL., Mrs. Merle (Ruth) Kemp, Denver, Colo., and Mrs. William (Virginia) Wheeler, Denver Colo.,a brother, George Cozad, Muscatine; and nine grandchildren.

Sidney Cozad was born in Star county, Mo., July 29, 1875.   When a small boy he moved with his parents to Muscatine and his entire life was spent in this city and in Illinios near Eliza.

He was united in marriage to Miss Della Coulter eighteen years ago.

He is survived by his wife, three children----- William, 17 Birdie, 15, and Harry 10.

His mother Margaret Cozad, and five sisters and three brothers also survive, they being Mrs. Mary Taylor, Shale City, ILL.; Mrs. John Coulter, Mrs. Sarah Cozad and Mrs. Charity Lewis of Muscatine, and Mrs. Minnie Mills of Davenport; John Cozad of Spokane Wash., and Miles and William of Muscatine.

MUSCATINE, Iowa - Velma Arnett Cozad, 83, formerly of 114 Sherman St., died Tuesday, October 23, 2001, at the Muscatine Care Center.

Funeral services will be 1030 a.m. on Friday at the Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Rev. Gerry Kahler will officiate. Pallbearers will be Rodney Reynolds, Harley Reynolds, Robert Farmer, Ronald Farmer,    John Harvey, and Denny Dieckman. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 3 to 7 p.m. Thursday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Arthritis Foundation.

Mrs. Cozad was born October 5, 1918, in Muscatine, the daughter of Elmer E. and Nellie I. Irwin Connor. She married Clifford Cozad on Feb. 26, 1944, in Baltimore, Maryland.

She was a member of the Musserville Worship Center.  She worked for Laura Musser before she was married.

Survivors include three sons, Gary D. Cozad and his wife, Trena, of Little Rock, Arkansas, Ronald A. Cozad and his wife, Peggy, of Muscatine, and Dennis L. Cozad and his wife Barbara, of Wichita, Kansas; seven grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren; one sister, Roma Reynolds and her husband, Robert, of Muscatine; one brother, Dean Connor and his wife, Thelma; three sister-in-laws,Colleen LaRue of Muscatine,  Corrine Mark and her husband, Harold, of Muscatine, and Florine Ramer of Muscatine; and many nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, four brothers, one sister, and her husband in 1998.

Wapello--- William J. Cozad resident of this vicinity for about 30 years, died Saturday at his home near Morning Sun.

He was born on Aug 7, 1865,at Rock Island county, ILL., the son of Joseph and Margaret Shaw Cozad. For a time he had served as the caretaker at the Sand Run Game preserve near here.

Surviving are three sons, William H and Guy R. Cozad both of Muscatine, and James F. Cozad of Morning Sun; one daughter Mrs. Sarah Almandinger, Hannibal, MO., four sisters, Mrs. Mary Taylor, Mrs. Nellie Brown and Mrs. Lillie Coulter, all of Muscatine, and Mrs. Minnie Bickett, Nichols; 15 grandchildren.

Funeral services will be conducted at 10 a. m.  Tuesday at the Dudgeon Funeral home here by Rev. H. C. Druse of Wapello.

William C. Cozad, 78, died at 1:17 a.m. today at Muscatine General Hospital. Mr. Cozad had resided at the Muscatine Care Center and was a former resident of the Hotel Muscatine.

Mr. Cozad was born Aug 10, 1936 at Perry, Mo., a son of Raymond Guy and Margaret Sarah Ellis Cozad. He was a life resident. He married Betty Mae Blackman on Sept. 24, 1954 at Wapello. He was a large equipment operator and a member of Local No. 537.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Jackie Joe, Rickie Lyn and Raymond Dean Cozad, all of Muscatine; three daughters Mrs. Randy A. Elizabeth Craig, widow of the late R.S. Craig, died at 5 o'clock Monday morning of consumption. Deceased was 70 years of age.  She was born in Scotland, but has resided in this state 40 years and in Scott county 30 years.
The funeral will be held from the family residence, 510 west 16th street,
Thursday morning at 9:30. Interment at Blue Grass.

Charles I. Craigg, 2205 Rockingham road, died Saturday morning. He was born Jan. 1, 1834 at Lafayette, IN, and was 63 years of age at the time of his death. At the age of 7 years he came to Blue Grass, IA, with his father.

 In addition to the bereaved widow, Mrs. Katie Craigg, the following survive: two children, Amanda in Iowa City, IA, and Walter Craigg in India (sic) a sister and brother, Mrs. Anna Vick of Denver, CO and Richard Craigg of Elliott, IL. Two grandchildren also survive.
The funeral will take place Monday at 12 o'clock from the home to the Blue Grass cemetery.

Carol Lynn Creamer, 11-day-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Creamer of Fairport, died at 3:20 p.m. Sunday at Bellevue hospital following an illness with a complication of ailments.

The child was born at the hospital on May 12, the daughter of Robert and Margaret Schaaf Creamer.  Surviving are the parents; two brothers, Robert and Richard Creamer; the grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. George Creamer and Mr. and Mrs. Paul Schaf all of Fairport.

The body is at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral home where services will be conducted at 2 p.m., Tuesday by the Rev. David M. Funk, pastor of the Grace Lutheran church.  Interment will be in the Fairport cemetery.

Waters of the Mississippi river near the Fairport fish hatchery were being dragged this afternoon in a search for the body of Dennis Creamer, 11, of Muscatine, who it was feared had drowned shortly after 11 o'clock this morning.

The Muscatine Emergency and Rescue Unit was summoned to assist in the search, which was being conducted under the direction of the sheriff's office, with at least four boats participating.

It was reported that Creamer, who officers said is a son of Alfred Creamer, 1015 I/2 Hill avenue, Muscatine and Mrs. Lawrence Carlisle of Davenport, in company with another youth, Vernon Meeke of Fairport, had gone to the river to seine for crawfish and minnows.

Creamer was reported to have been living at Fairport with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schroeder.

He had apparently stepped upon a sandbar in the Mississippi which gave way beneath his weight, and disappeared in the water.

The Meeke youth ran to the fish hatchery to sound the alarm, and the Rescue Unit was summoned.

Dr. I. H. Odell, Muscatine county coroner, announced today no inquest will be held in the drowning of Dennis Creamer, 10, at Fairport Wednesday.

The coroner said his investigation had confirmed that the boy's death was accidental.

Dennis, who had been staying with his grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Fred Schroeder at Fairport, met death late Wednesday forenoon while seining for crawfish and minnows on a sandbar at Fairport.

He went to the spot in company with Vernon Meeke, a Fairport youth.  Dennis was reported to have been wading only a short distance from the bar when he stepped into a hole and disappeared in water over his head. Neither of the boys could swim.  Meeke ran to the Fairport fish hatchery for help, and a call for the rescue unit was put through to Muscatine.  Persons who went immediately to the spot could see no trace of the Creamer boy.

Three members of the Muscatine Emergency and Rescue unit probing the bottom of the river with hooks from a boat, found the body at 3:37 p.m. Wednesday.

Those in the boat were Russell Pohlman, LaVerne Reifert and Kenneth Snavely.

The body was entangled in some submerged brush and came to view as members of the unit, using their hooks, lifted the brush to the surface.

Deputy Sheriff, Mike Martin, other members of the emergency and rescue unit, and a number of fishermen with boats joined in the search for the body.

Others assisting in the rescue unit's efforts were William Thomas, Lyal Chamberlin, Robert Bynum, Harry Tiecke, Elwood Law and Ray Truesdale.

The area of the river where the search was conducted was heavily littered with logs, brush and snags that interfered with the use of nets by fishermen, in some places the water was only about two feet deep.

George F. Creamer Sr., 71, 1215 Dale Street, Muscatine, died this morning at the Veterans hospital at  Iowa City after an extended illness.

Mr. Creamer was a life resident of Muscatine county.  He was born May 13, 1892 in Montpelier Twp.

Mr. Creamer was a veteran of World War I.  He was a member of the American Legion, the V.F.W. and Ziegler Memorial Lutheran church at New Era.  He was married Sept. 20, 1919 in Muscatine to Nuffie Brewer.

He is survived by the widow, Mrs. Nuffie Creamer; four sons, Robert Creamer and Alfred Creamer of Fairport, Frank Creamer and George Creamer Jr. of Muscatine; two step-sons, Oddie Truesdale and  James Truesdale of Fairport; one daughter, Mrs. Viola Martin of Muscatine; one step-daughter, Mrs. Wilbur Dipple of Fairport; two half-brothers, Herman Suhl of Muscatine and Bernard Suhl of Coon Rapids Minn.; one sister, Mrs. George Meleken, Seattle Wash.; one half-sister, Mrs. Florence Myers of Rapid City, S. D.; 37 grandchildren and 30  great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; two step-sons, Ray and Fred Truesdale; one brother and one sister.

Services are pending at the George M. Wittich funeral home.

Margaret M. Creamer,  65, of 1415 King Ave., died Saturday night, April 4, 1992 at the Muscatine Care Center.

Services will be at 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, April 8 at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral Home. The Rev. Paul Ostrem of Zion Lutheran Church will officiate.

Pallbearers will be Lanny Creamer, Leroy Truesdale, Leo Truesdale, Randy Stegall, Tim Stegall and Jerry Paul Stegall. Burial will be at the Fairport Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 4 to 8 p.m., Tuesday. A memorial has been established.

Mrs. Creamer was born Nov. 13, 1926 at Reedsville, Pa., a daughter of Paul and Rella Rowe Schaaf.
She married Robert G. Creamer on May 21, 1945 in Portland Maine.

Survivors include two sons Robert W. Creamer of Iowa City, and Richard E. Creamer of Wilton; one daughter, Christal L. Bell of West Point, Miss., 13 grandchildren, two great grandchildren; her mother Rella Schaaf of Muscatine; one brother, Donald Schaaf of Muscatine; and one sister, Thelma Stegall of  Wapello.

She was preceded in death by her husband in 1968; her father Paul; a daughter, Carol; a sister Nancy; a brother, David; and one grandchild.

MUSCATINE-- Mary F. Creamer, 79, of 140 E. Webster St., Letts, died Sunday, Oct. 17, 1999, at Colonial Manor Nursing Home Columbus Junction.

Services will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at Ralph J. Wittich-Riley-Freers Funeral Home. The Rev. Darryl Erickson of the Grandview Community Bible Church will officiate. Pallbearers will be Rocky Phillips, Ricky Phillips, Rob Gabriel, Jesse Wheeler, Jason Wheeler and Steven Hopkins. Honorary pallbearers will be Shawna Steed, Maria Gabriel, Roxane Wheeler, Lisa Coffman, Kellie Sue Phillips and Kelly Coffman. Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Visitation will be from 2-8 p.m. Tuesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Mary Creamer Memorial Fund.

Mrs. Creamer was born on Jan. 25, 1920, in Louisa County, the daughter of William J. and Edith S. Babbitt Hank. She was united in marriage to Alfred L. Creamer on April 24, 1953, in Kahoka, Mo.

She had owned and operated the Homestyle Restaurant on Second Street in Muscatine, and last  worked in the Hy-Vee Deli in the mall.

Survivors include her husband, Alfred L. Creamer of Letts; two daughters, Beverly Hopkins of Muscatine, and Sue Phillips and her husband Sherdie Jr. of Letts; one step-daughter, Nancy Cousins and her husband Paul of El Cajon, Calif.; one stepson, Darrell Creamer and his wife Georgia of Escondido, Calif.; a granddaughter, Lisa Coffman, whom Mary raised; nine grandchildren, 17 great-grandchildren; 13 step grandchildren; several step-great-grandchildren; three brothers, Bill Hank of Monmouth, Ill., Roger Hank of Galesburg, Ill. and DuWayne Hank of Monmouth, Ill.; two sisters,
Martha Brown of Monmouth, Ill., and Georgia Metcalf of Kirkwood, Ill.; and several nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents; one son, Dennis in infancy; one grandson, Joey Phillips; one great-grandson, Jacob Phillips; one sister, Maxine Short; and one brother, Raymond Hank.

Mrs. Nuffie Creamer, 86 Fairport, died at 6:30 p.m. Thursday at Muscatine General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home.  Visitation will be held from 7 to 9 p.m. Saturday and 2 to p p.m. Sunday.  Burial will be in Greenwood Cemetery.

Nuffie Brewer was born Dec. 25, 1890 in Rock Island County, the daughter of Steven and Nancy Acey Brewer.  She was a member of the Ziegler Memorial Lutheran Church of New Era.

She married Pallie Truesdale in 1908 and married George F. Creamer Sr., Sept. 20, 1919, in Muscatine.

Surviving are four sons, Oddie Truesdale of Fairport, Alfred Creamer of Fairport, Frank Creamer and George Creamer Jr. of Muscatine; a daughter, Mrs. Wilbur (Lydia) Dipple of Fairport, 39 grandchildren, 88 great grandchildren and 18 great great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by both husbands, a daughter and four sons.

WILTON -- Richard Eugene Creamer, 49, died suddenly Monday morning, Aug. 12, 1996, at Muscatine General Hospital.

Services will be at 1 p.m. Thursday, at the Riley Funeral Home, with the Rev. Paul Ostrem, of Zion Lutheran Church, officiating. Burial will be at the Oakdale Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 1 to 8 p.m. Wednesday, at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Muscatine Heart Association.

Mr. Creamer was born April 17, 1947, in Muscatine, to Robert and Margaret Scaaf Creamer. He had previously lived in Fairport, and the surrounding Muscatine area, moving to Wilton in 1974.  He married Susan Altman in 1967, in Muscatine.

He was an avid boater and fisherman, and a member of the Muscatine Boat Club. He enjoyed camping and collecting Ertle toys.

He was employed at Grain Processing Corporation since 1969.

Survivors include his wife, Susan; two sons, Lanny and his wife, Rachel Creamer of Fruitland, and Richard B. Creamer of Wilton; three daughters Mrs Gary (Charity) Klenoski of Rapid City, S.D., Mrs. Ed (Sara) Carter of Zebulon, Ga., and Mrs. Pat (Carrie) Conway of Wilton; six grandchildren, Kendra, Corrin, Blaine and Blythe Carter, all of Zebulon, Hannah Creamer of Fruitland and Carolyn Conway of Wilton; one brother, Robert Wayne Creamer of Iowa City; and one sister Crystal Bell of West Point Miss. and several aunts, uncles and many friends.

He was preceded in death by one son, Troy in 1967, one grandson Derek in infancy, and one sister, Carol, and his parents.

Robert G. Creamer, 49, Rt. 3, Muscatine, died at 11:12 p.m. Wednesday at Muscatine General hospital after an illness of 11/2 years.

A life resident of this community, Mr. Creamer had been employed as a repairman at Dewey Portland Cement Co.
He was born April 20, 1919, at Fairport, the sone of George and Muffie Brewer Creamer.
He was married May 21, 1945, at Portland, Maine, to Margaret Schaff.

Mr. Creamer was a veteran of World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and Ziegler  Memorial Lutheran church.

Surviving are the widow, Mrs. Margaret Creamer, Rt. 3; two sons, Robert W. Creamer, Muscatine, and   Richard E. Creamer Rt. 3, one daughter, Christal L. Creamer, Rt. 3, three brothers, Alfred Creamer, Rt.  3, Frank, Creamer and George Creamer, Muscatine, two half-brothers, Otis and James Truesdale, Rt.  3; one half-sister, Lydia Dipple, Rt. 3; and his mother, Mrs. Muffie Creamer, Muscatine. Two grandchildren also survive.

He was preceded in death by his father, one sister and two half-brothers.

The body is at the Ralph J. Wittich, where friends may call starting Friday. Services will be held at the funeral home at 1:30 p.m. Saturday with E. B. Meyer officiating. Interment will be at the Fairport cemetery.

IOWA CITY, IOWA Robert Wayne Creamer, 56, Iowa City, died Monday, May 6, 2002, at his home after a brief illness.

Visitation is 2-8 p.m. today, with a 7:30 p.m. Moose Service, at the Powell Funeral Home, Wellman.  There will be no other services. Burial will be at the Wellman Cemetery. A memorial fund has been established for the Hope United Methodist Church, American Lung Association and the Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1096.

Mr. Creamer was born March 13, 1946, in Muscatine, the son of Robert G. and Margaret Schaaf Creamer. He married Alverda Kelley April 20, 1986, at the Little Brown Church, Nashua.

He attended school in Fairport.
He lived in Muscatine before moving to Iowa City in 1986.
He was a truck driver.

He was a member of Hope United Methodist Church, Loyal Order of Moose Lodge No. 1096 and the Fraternal Order of the Eagles Aerie No. 695. He enjoyed listening to country western music, watching rodeos and pro golf, he was an avid Chicago Cubs baseball fan and he enjoyed playing cribbage and working crossword puzzles.

Survivors include his wife; four children, Michelle Thomassen and husband Brad of West Salem, Wis., Rachael Creamer of Anchorage, Alaska, Bob Creamer and wife Amanda of Iowa City and Eric Creamer and wife Sara of Muscatine; five grandchildren, Avery, Erin, Stephanie, Brittany and Jacob; a sister, Crystal West Bell; and a sister-in-law, Sue Creamer Manning of Wilton.

He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother and a sister.

WEST LIBERTY--Funeral services for Lawrence J. Crees, 57, farmer near West Liberty, who died Sunday at Wichita, Kan., will be held at 2 p.m. Thursday at the Methodist church in West Liberty.  The Rev G.L. Husstader will officiate.

Burial will be in the Oakridge cemetery at West Liberty.  The Rochester Masonic lodge will also hold services.  Snider funeral home is in charge of arrangements.

Mr. Krees died Sunday at Wichita, Kan., where he had been a patient at a sanitorium.  He was born in Cedar county and married Mabel Anderson.

Surviving are his widow, his mother, Mrs. Nellie Crees, of Atalissa, and two sisters, Mrs. Ethel Dotson of Atalissa and Mrs. Edith Ridenour, Phoenix, Ariz.

Mrs. Margaret Crim, 96, died Friday evening at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Cecil Shellady, Sr., 212 Golfview avenue, where she has made her home for the past four years.

Born near Columbus Junction, January 15, 1864, she was a daughter of Henry and Sarah Foster Brown.  She was married in 1881 to George W. Crim.

Mrs. Crim resided in Louisa county and moved to Lone Tree in 1920.  She was a member of the United Brethren church and the Rebekah lodge at Lone Tree.

Survivors include, in addition to Mrs. Shellady, two sons, Robert W. Crim of Columbus Junction, and Hilton C. Crim, of Lone Tree, seven grandchildren, 13 great grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren.  She was preceded in death by her husband, in 1900, one daughter Laura, who died in infancy, two sisters and one brother.

Funeral services will be at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Oathout funeral chapel with Rev. Herbert Brom, pastor of St Andrew Presbyterian Church, officiating.  Burial will be in Memory Gardens.

He was a native of Wilton, Iowa; a retired supervisor for E.I. du Pont de Nemours & Co.; past monarch of Aahmed Grotto; a member of Shively Masonic Lodge 951, Scottish Rite Valley of Evansville, Ind., Kentucky Society of Sons of the American Revolution; and an honorary member of DePauw Masonic Lodge 338.

IOWA CITY, Iowa - Mary Evelyn Crist, 92, of Iowa City, formerly of Letts, died Monday, June 5, 2000, at the Lantern Park Care Center, Iowa City.

Services will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Thursday at the Stacy-Lewis Funeral Home, Columbus Junction.
Burial will be in the Letts Cemetery.

Visitation with the family will be held from 5-8 p.m. on Wednesday at the funeral home. A memorial has been established at the funeral home for the Iowa City Hospice.

Mrs. Crist was born on July 15, 1907, in Letts the daughter of Harry and Pearle Hildebrand Gipple. She graduated from the Letts High School in 1925. She then attended Cornell College and attained her teaching certificate.

She taught elementary school at Castana. She met George Crist, and they were married March 8, 1930, in Fremont, Neb. In the summer of 1930, they returned to the Letts community to farm.

During World War II, she began teaching at the Strawberry Hill School and then at the Letts Consolidated School. She taught until after the end of World War II. At that time, she began substitute teaching until she retired around 1960.

She was a lifelong member of the Letts chapter of the Order of the Eastern Star and the Letts United Methodist Church. She was church organist from her early years and later served as choir director at the church.

Survivors include her son, Harry Crist and his wife, Sharon; five grandchildren, Todd, currently of Washington, D.C., Amy of Coralville, Seth of Iowa City, Polly of Coralville, and Elijah, currently of Providence, R.I.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, George; and a sister, Marian Carlson.

DIED, At Lettsville, December 14, 1882, Elizabeth, wife of Levi Cross, age 74 years, 2 months, 25 days. The funeral services were held at the Brick Church, Seventy-Six township, on Saturday last.

Deceased was a native of Virginia, a sister of the late Hon. Michael Price, of this county, and had resided in Iowa for 34 years. She was a member of the Methodist church from the age of nineteen.  Seven of a family of ten children survive her loss and six attended her dying bed and were present at her funeral.

The good people of Seventy-Six among whom she spent near a third of a century, speak loving of her many virtues and her family and friends mourn, not without hope, for her last hours were full of hope, faith and resignation.

Levi Cross was born in Adams county, Ohio, January 1, 1806, and died in Jefferson county, Nebraska, January 20, 1894, aged 88 years and 20 days.

Mr. Cross' parents, James and Epsey Cross, settled in Adams county, Ohio, in 1768. He was of Irish extraction, his grandfather on his father's side having been a native of Ireland. Mr. Cross came to Muscatine county, Iowa, from Ohio in 1816, bringing the family in wagons all the way. In 1849 he entered government land and settled his family in Seventy-Six township, on land now occupied by David Legler.

Mr. Cross had been married twice; his first wife was Mary Foster, a native of Ohio. His second wife was Elizabeth Cheatham, a native of Green, Brier county, Virginia. Seven children sruvive him; Perry, John B., Mary Ann, Nancy, Levi, Hannah and Michael, all born in Ohio.

Brother Cross was converted to God in 1857, under the preaching of Rev. J. W. Fulkerson, and joined the United Brethren church. Since the death of his wife ha has lived with his children, and died at the home of William P. Fullmer, in Nebraska. He leaves, beside his children, thirty-five grandchildren and forty-three great grandchildren.

His record as a citizen and neighbor is excellent. He had the courage of his convictions, he was just and kind in his dealings, considerate to help in times of sickness and trial, and thus won for himself a high place in the esteem and love of his neighbors. He chose for his funeral sermon text Ecclesiastes 12:7.  The funeral services were held at the Brick U.B. church in Seventy-Six township, on Tuesday, January 23, 1891, and not withstanding the snow-storm and cold weather there was a large attendance of the old friends and neighbors. The remains were interred beside the wife in the churchyard to await the resurrection of the dead.

This afternoon, shortly before 2 o'clock, at the home of his sister, Mrs. Francis Drake, 214 Clinton street, occurred the death of Levi Cross, a lifelong resident of Muscatine, the immediate cause being Bright's disease, from which the deceased had suffered for a considerable period. He was, however, not confined to his bed until 10 days ago.
Mr. Cross was a member of Shelby Norman Post, and a well-known resident of South Muscatine.

The funeral will be held at 2 o'clock Friday afternoon from the late residence on Clinton street.  He is survived by one daughter in Kansas, and two sisters and two brothers, who are: Mrs. John Shellabarger, of Lettsville, and Mrs. Francis Drake of Muscatine; Harry Cross, of Fairbury, Neb., and Michael Cross of South Dakota.

MORNING SUN, Iowa -- Services for Geneva I. Crossley, of rural Morning Sun, will be 2 p.m. Monday at the United Methodist Church, Wapello. Burial will be in Fulton Cairo Cemetery. Visitation is 7-8:30 p.m. Sunday at Dudgeon-McCulley Funeral Home, Wapello.

Mrs. Crossley died Thursday, July 2, 1998, at Burlington Medical Center. She was a farmer.

Geneva Tindall was born March 19, 1913, in Cairo. She married Denzel Sanburg in 1937 in Winfield. He died in 1945. She married Clarence Crossley in 1946 in Cairo. He died in 1978.

A memorial fund has been established.

Survivors include daughters, Freida Sanburg Vantiger, Mount Union, and Beverly Crossley Marquardt, rural Morning Sun; four grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a sister, Evelyn Gipple, Morning Sun.

David C. Crowder, 36, of 521 Main St., died Wednesday, Oct. 8, 2002, at his home. Visitation will be 4-7 p.m. Friday at Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home, Muscatine. Burial will be in later in Heritage Hills Cemetery, Tuscaloosa, Ala.

Mr. Crowder was born Aug. 26, 1966, in Pekin, Ill. Memorials may be made to Muscatine Dialysis Unit operated by the University of Iowa.

Survivors include a sister, Patricia Horchem, and brother Walter L. Jr., both of Fruitland.

Candi Sue Crull, three month old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Jackie Allen Crull of Letts, died at 12:15 p.m. Thursday at Muscatine General hospital.
Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at the Fairbanks funeral home. Burial will be in Indian Creek cemetery near Columbus Junction.

Mrs. Crull is the former Sally I. Love.

Funeral services for Wayne E. Cubbage, 29, will be held at 10 a.m. Tuesday at the Ralph J. Wittich funeral home.Rev. Theodore Olsen will officiate, and interment will be at the Island cemetery.

Cubbage, 1610 Wisconsin St., was killed  Sunday morning in a two-car crash near Blue Grass.

Mr. Cubbage was born July 30, 1938, in Muscatine, the son of Herman and Leona Kallenberger Cubbage. He had been a life resident of Muscatine and was employed at Carver Pump Co.  He was married April 30, 1955, in Muscatine to Ruby Daniel.

Surviving are the widow Mrs. Ruby Cubbage of Muscatine, two sons, Wayne E. Cubbage Jr. and Martin J. Cubbage, at home; two daughters, Tammy Cubbage and Claudette Cubbage at home; one brother, Martin Cubbage of Muscatine; and his parents, Herman Cubbage and Mrs. Leslie Kyes, both of Muscatine.

Wayne Eugene Cubbage Jr. 32, 1116 North Thornwood, Davenport, died Wednesday morning at Franciscan Hospital, Rock
Island, of injuries suffered in a fall from a roof while working.  Services are Friday at 3 p.m. at the Ralph J. Wittich Funeral home. The Rev. Olen Adams of Quint Cities Baptist Church, Davenport, will officiate. Pallbearers are Bob Dugas, Tod Dezmar, Mike Jones,
Albert Purall, Cris Kelso and Junior Holdorf. Burial will be at the Island Cemetery.

Mr. Cubbage was born Oct. 13, 1955 at Muscatine, a son of Wayne E. and Ruby McDaniel Cubbage Sr.  He was a construction worker.

Survivors include his daughter, Rebecca Rose Cubbage, Moline; his stepfather and mother, Mr. and Mrs. Thomas McCartney, Davenport; two brothers, Martin Cubbage, North Carolina; and David McCartney, Davenport; two sisters Mrs. Richard Tammy Parks, Blue Grass; Mrs. Bud Claudette Newton, Kingston Pa.;and Dianna McCarthney, Davenport; and grandmothers, Ruby McCright Davenport; and Mrs. Leslie (Leona) Kyes, Muscatine.   His father preceded him in death.

Wilmer A., son of Shelton L. and Mary (Barnes) Culp, was born at Muscatine, Iowa, Sept. 10, 1883; died of a heart attack April 21, 1952, at his home in Peoria, Ill.; aged 68 y. 7 m. 11 d.

He was united in marriage to Elizabeth M. Arndt on Feb. 25, 1902.

Surviving are his wife, one daughter (Mrs. R. Y. Kemp, Chesterfield, Mo.), one son (Wilmer M., Chesterfield, Mo.), 9 grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren, one sister (Mrs. Daisy F. Hunter, Muscatine, Iowa), besides many other relatives and friends.

He had made his home in Peoria for a number of years and united with the Peoria Mennonite Church in 1921, where he was a regular attendant when health permitted. Funeral services were conducted at the Boland Mortuary Chapel in Peoria on April 24 in charge of J. J. Hostetler, assisted by John Harnish. Burial was made in the Hickory Point Cemetery near Metamora, Ill

Atalissa--Albert L. Cunningham, 81, a retired farmer, died at 11:40 p.m. Saturday here at the home of a   son-in-law, Walter White, with whom he made his home. He had been in failing health for several years.

Mr. Cunningham was born March 28, 1864 at Princeton, Ill., being a son of George M. and Elizabeth Cunningham. He spent most of his early years in western Illinois and eastern Iowa. He married Martha Shetler at Illinois City, Dec. 22, 1886. Their home was made in the Illinois City area for 10 years after which they moved to Iowa, where Mr. Cunningham had since resided.

Surviving are four grandchildren, Mrs. Geraldine Morrison, of Atalissa, Cpl. Wayne White now stationed in Hawaii, Mrs. Eileen Marine of Wilton and Edwin White, of Atalissa; two sisters Mrs. Roxie Davidson of Muscatine, and Mrs. Effie Taylor of Lime Springs; and one brother Martin Cunningham, of Muscatine. Several nieces and nephews also survive. He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, three brothers, three sisters, and three children Diana, Inez, and Mable.

Mr. Cunningham was a member of the Cedar Valley Methodist church, the Masonic lodge and the Penn Avenue Grange.

Funeral arrangements are in the charge of Schneider Funeral Home in West Liberty. Details are incomplete pending word from relatives at a distance.

Albert 36 born Mar. 1864 in Illinois married 12 years, Martha 35 born July 1864 in Illinois she had 3  children and 2 still living, Diannah 11 born June 1889 in Illinois, Iris 7 born Feb 1893 in Illinois.

Graveside rites were conducted at 3 p. m. Thursday at the Illinois City cemetery for Daniel LeRoy Cunningham, one day old son of Mr. and Mrs. Loren Cunningham, who died Monday at University hospital, Iowa City.  The Rev. Timothy Barrett, pastor of the Walnut Street Baptist church officiated.

The Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home had charge of arrangements.

Mrs. Doris M. Cunningham, 68, 1423 Lincoln Blvd., died at 10:20 p. m. Monday at the Muscatine General Hospital.

Funeral services will be held at 2:30 p. m. Thursday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home.  Burial will be in the Illinois City Cemetery.  Visitation will begin at noon Wednesday.

Doris Ryan was born July 7, 1907, in Rock Island County, the daughter of William and Phoebe Rowland Ryan.  She married Ollie L. Cunningham Nov. 12, 1924 at Muscatine.  She was a member of the Walnut St. Baptist Church.

Surviving are her husband, three sons Marlin E., Irwin L., and Loren A. all of Muscatine, two daughters Mrs. Richard (Darlene) Hill and Mrs. Fred (Vivian) Busch Jr. both of Muscatine, 17 grandchildren, and two sisters Mrs. Paul (Mattie) Colberg, and Mrs. Ray (Kathleen) Knapp both of Muscatine.

She was preceded in death by her parents, two daughters, a son, and a brother.

Eugene Cunningham, infant son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyle Cunningham, 710 Lombard street, died at the home of his parents Sunday night at 9:30 o'clock within a few hours of his birth.
The body is at the Wittich Funeral Home where funeral arrangements are pending.

(Illinois City News.)--- Memorial day was rendered more sad than usual by the burial of George Cunningham, whose funeral from the U. B. church took place at 10 a.m. Rev. Nixdorf delivered the funeral discourse.

Mr. Cunningham had been a citizen of this place for over tweny years and was highly respected for his sterling integrity and his quiet, industrious habits, He leaves six children and many friends to mourn his loss.

One son, Albert was unable to attend the funeral on account of the very dangerous illness of his wife and child.

Services for Harold R. Cunningham, 68, will be held at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home.
Interment will be at the Drury-Reynolds Cemetery.  Visitation is now being held at the Funeral Home.

Mr. Cunningham, Columbus Junction, died at 3:39 p. m. Thursday at Muscatine General Hospital following an extended illness.

He was born June 15, 1907 in Illinois.  He had been a resident of Columbus Junction 18 years.  He married Vina M. Harris.

Survivors include three sons Harold L. of Muscatine, Raymond E. of Fredonia Iowa, and Clarence M. of New London Iowa, three daughters Mrs. Delbert (Gloria) Partington of Burlington, Mrs. Earnest (Juanita) Smith of Muscatine, and Marion Titus, Greenfield Iowa; 15 grandchildren, and 21 great- grandchildren; one brother Ollie Cunningham of Muscatine; and two sisters Mrs. Elva Burns and Mrs. Richard (Bessie) Brown both of Muscatine.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one sister and one brother.

Services are planned at 3:30 p. m. Tuesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home for Harold William Cunningham, 12, son of Mr. and Mrs. Harold McKamey, 613 East Third street, who died at 1:30 p. m. Sunday after a brief illness.  Burial will be at Greenwood cemetery.

Harold Cunningham was born Dec. 13, 1946 at Muscatine.  He attended the First Evangelical United Brethren church.

In addition to the parents, he is survived by his grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William Harter, Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cunningham and great grandmother Mrs. John Hidlebaugh all of Muscatine.

A sister preceded him in death.

CONESVILLE ---- Funeral services are pending today at Stacy-Lewis funeral home in Columbus, Junction for Kim Lee Cunningham, 16, of Conesville, who died of suffocation in a grain bin at Brauns Feed and Grain Elevator, Conesville about 10:30 p.m. Monday.

Muscatine County Sheriff Richard Oppelt said that Cunningham was working at the elevator and had climbed up the ladder to check how full the bin when he apparently lost his balance and fell into the shelled corn, sinking to the bottom of the bin.

Oppelt said it was about 15 to 20 minutes before Cunningham was missed.

Boards were ripped off the bottom of the bin and the body removed.  Muscatine County Medical Examiner Dr. V. A. Swayze termed the cause of death as suffocation.

Cunningham was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Raymond Cunningham of Conesville.  His mother is bookkeeper at Brauns and his father was working at the elevator at the time of the accident.

MUSCATINE, Iowa -- Loren A. Cunningham, 68, of Muscatine died Friday, Dec. 21, 2001, at Unity Hospital following a short illness.

Services are 11:30 a.m. Thursday at the Geo. M. Wittich-Lewis Funeral Home. The Rev. James Baughman will officiate.  Burial will be at the Illinois City Cemetery.  Following the burial, a luncheon will be held in the Community Room at the funeral home.  Visitation is 5-8 p.m. Wednesday at the funeral home. Memorials may be made to the Fruitland Baptist Church.

Mr. Cunningham was born on Nov. 28, 1933, in Muscatine County, the son of Ollie L. and Doris M. Ryan Cunningham.  He married Joyce Christensen on May 27, 1955, in Omaha, Neb.

He attended Faith Bible College, formerly Omaha Baptist Bible College, for one year.
He worked for Doane Pet Care since 1973.
He was a member of the Fruitland Baptist Church.
He enjoyed model trains and was a train buff.

Survivors include his wife; three sons, Wesley Cunningham and his wife, Helen, Jim Cunningham and Roger Cunningham, all of Muscatine; two grandsons, Timothy and Aaron; a granddaughter, Tamar; a brother, Irwin
Cunningham and his wife, Roberta, of Muscatine; and two sisters, Darlene Hill and Vivian Busch and her husband,
Fred, all of Muscatine.  He was preceded in death by his parents; two sons, Robert and Daniel; a grandson, Nathaniel; a brother; and two sisters.

Lyle E. Cunningham 46, McArthur street died at Hershey hospital at 11:30 a. m., Sunday after drinking poison, according to Dr. C. P. Phillips, county coroner who said no inquest would be held.

Mr. Cunningham was born at Illinois City on Sept. 9, 1903, the son of M. W. and Mattie Hayes Cunningham.  He had lived in Muscatine for 35 years.

Surviving are two sons Robert Cunningham, in Missouri, and Wayne Cunningham at home: one daughter, Anna of Keokuk: two brothers, Ollie Cunningham, Muscatine, and Harold, East Moline: three sisters, Mrs. Ed Krueger, Mrs. Ralph Burns, and Mrs. Richard Brown all of Muscatine, his parents Mr. and Mrs. M. W. Cunningham, Muscatine.  One son, in infancy, preceded him in death.

The body is at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home and services will be conducted there at 2 p. m., Tuesday by the Rev. Merle Hull, pastor of the Walnut street Baptist church.  Interment will be in the Illinois City cemetery.

Mrs. A. L. Cunningham, 67, Muscatine county resident for more than 40 years died at 7:20 a. m. today at her home, three miles west of Muscatine after an extended illness.

She was born near Illinois City July 21, 1864, being a daughter of Jonas and Harriett Shetler. She was married to A. L. Cunningham Dec. 22, 1886. Their home was made near Atalissa for nearly 20 years, and near Muscatine the past five years.

Mrs. Cunningham was a member of the First Methodist Espiscopal church and of the Atalissa Eastern Stars.

Surviving are her husband, one daughter Mrs. Walter White; five sisters, Mrs. Margaret Federlein, of Atalissa; Mrs. Eliza Dungan; Mrs. Elizabeth Crabtree of Illinois City; Mrs. Melinda, Summers and Mrs. Agnes Morton of Muscatine; one brother John Shetler of Oakland, Calif. and four grandchildren. Two children preceded their mother in death.

Funeral services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Friday by the Rev. Benjamin F. Schwartz at the Cedar Valley church. Burial will be at Oak Ridge cemetery, West Liberty. The body will remain at the Snyder Funeral home pending services.

Rites will be conducted at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home for Martin Wesley Cunningham, 80, of 1421 Lincoln boulevard, who died at 10 p.m. Monday at the Grigg Nursing Home. Burial will be at Illinois City cemetery.

The son of George and Sarah Hagen Cunningham, he was born May 1, 1878 at Illinois City.  He had been a resident of Muscatine 40 years.  His marriage to Mattie Hayes took place here Nov. 1, 1900 (sic)

Survivors include his wife; two sons, Ollie and Harold Cunningham; and three daughters, Mrs. Ed Krueger, Mrs. Ralph Burns, and Mrs. Richard Brown.  All reside at Muscatine.  There are 30 grandchildren and 41 great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by one son, two brothers and three sisters.

The "nuptial parlor" of Justice of the Peace John A. Rowan is becoming a popular place for souls with a single thought and hearts that beat as one.  No less than twenty-seven couples have been linked and gone forth on the path of connubial bliss since the apartment was fitted up by Muscatine's ever popular squire.  Yesterday afternoon the squire joined four happy mortals from Drury township, the double wedding taking place at the hour of 3:30.  The contracting parties were Mr. John Henry Hays and Miss Elizabeth Johnson and Mr. Martin W. Cunningham and Miss Mattie M. Hays.

Ollie Cunningham, 73, died early this morning at Lutheran Homes.  He had formerly resided at 1423 Lincoln Blvd.

Services will be held at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral Home.  Burial will be in Illinois City.  Visitation is after noon Friday at the Funeral Home.

Ollie Cunningham was born July 23, 1905 in Illinois City, IL, the son of Martin and Mattie Hays (Hayes) Cunningham.  He had lived in Muscatine most of his life,

His marriage to Doris M. Ryan took place Nov. 12, 1924 in Muscatine.  He attended Walnut Park Baptist Church.
Mr. Cunningham retired in 1971 after 30 years of employment with the Railroad C.R.I. & P.

Survivors include three sons Marlin E., Irwin L., and Loren A. all of Muscatine; two daughters, Mrs. Fred (Vivian) Busch Jr., and Mrs. Richard (Darlene) Hill both of Muscatine; 17 grandchildren; three great grandchildren; and one sister, Mrs. Richard (Bessie) Brown of Muscatine.  qHe was preceded in death by his wife, two daughters, one son, two brothers and two sisters.

Robert T. Cunningham 26, 708 Linn St. drowned Wednesday while swimming with friends in a gravel pit near Muscatine.

The Acme Fuel Company gravel pit in which Cunningham died was clearly marked "no trespassing" said Sgt. Lowell Snyder, Muscatine County deputy Sheriff.

The incident occurred about 4:30 p. m. when Cunningham was swimming with two friends in the pit, over which a tree leaned with a rope tied to it, said Jody Hein 26, Hein was one of the friends accompanying Cunningham at the accident scene.

"He swung off the rope and was trying to land on an inner tube (in the water), but he over shot it," Hein stated,
adding, "I was standing right there when he went under and when I noticed he was (staying) under, I went down to try to get him."

Hein said he pulled Cunningham up to the surface twice, but when he kept struggling and fighting (both times), I had to let him go."

The other friend, Donald Wells, 30, was standing in the water "as far as he could, trying to reach my arms when I had Bob up," Hein said.

But the two would be rescuers were unsuccessful, and Cunningham, apparently unable to swim according to Snyder, was recovered from 30 feet deep water one hour later at 5:25 p. m.

Snyder said resuscitation was attempted because according to one of the three divers, two from the Muscatine Rescue Unit and one from the Louisa County Sheriff's Department, who recovered the body, victims of drownings in cold water have been revived before.  One of the divers also estimated the temperature of the water at the depth where the body was found to be approximately 30 degrees, said Snyder.

Hein said efforts to revive Cunningham continued for at least two and a half hours at the gravel pit and Muscatine General Hospital, where he was taken by Air Care helicopter ambulance from Iowa City.  He was pronounced dead at 8:00 p. m. by Dr. Mark Odell, Muscatine County Medical Examiner.

Snyder said no citations have been or will be issued against Hein or Wells for trespassing, but noted, "We do have authorization from the owners of the gravel pits to take any necessary action to keep people off the premisise."

He estimated that the rope from which Cunningham jumped had been fastened to the tree for "quite some time."

Mike Embree, manager of Acme Fuel Co., said although he isn't sure, he thinks entrance is being gained into the pit through the Thatcher Glass parking lot, where he confirmed that signs are posted warning of danger to trespassers and swimmers.

He further noted, "We went over this morning and cut the rope off of the tree and we are in the process of closing the entrance to the back pit with concrete barriers."

A barge rope was tied to the tree, Embree said adding, "I definitely have full intentions of cutting that tree down when we get the equipment ready."

"I feel if we don't cut it down, (someone) is just going to put another rope up there."

Services for Cunningham will be held at 1:30 p. m. Saturday at the Geo. M. Wittich Lewis Funeral Home.  The Revs. LaVerne Hubbard and L. Eugene Mohr will officiate.  Burial will be in the Illinois City Cemetery.  Visitation will be from 7 to 9 p. m. today, 2 to 9 p. m. and until service time Saturday.

The son of Loren and Joyce Christensen Cunningham, he was born Oct. 5, 1958, in Muscatine.  He was a member of the Walnut Park Baptist Church and had been employed by the H. J. Heinz Co.

In addition to his parents, he is survived by three brothers, Wesley, Jim, and Roger at home.  He was preceded in death by his grandparents, and a brother in infancy.

Ruth Marcella Cunningham six weeks old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Harold Cunningham died at the family home 308 1/2 east Second street early this morning.

The child was born on April 7 in Muscatine, the daughter of Harold L. and Ruth M. Harter Cunningham.  Surviving are the parents, one brother Harold W. Cunningham at home, the randparents, Mr. and Mrs. William Harter of Jacksonville Texas, and Mrs. and Mrs. Harold R. Cunningham of Muscatine, great grandparents Mrs. Annette Hidlebaugh, Letts, Clarence Harris, Martin Cunningham and Mrs. Mattie Hayes all of Muscatine.

The body is at the Geo. M. Wittich Funeral home, and will remain there until services which will be conducted at 10 a. m. Tuesday at the grave in Greenwood cemetery by the Rev. R. Stills pastor of the First Baptist church.

Ruth Marcine Cunningham 3 months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Cunningham died at her home 215 Cedar street, at 11:30 Friday night.

Surviving besides the parents, are a brother, Marlyn at home, and the grandparents Mr. and Mrs. William Ryan, and M. W. Cunningham, one great grandmother Mrs. Mattie Ryan all of this city.

Funeral services will be conducted at the Wittich Funeral Home at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon by the Rev. J. B. Randall.  Burial will be in the Illinois City, cemetery.

Funeral services for Ruth Marcine Cunningham, infant daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ollie Cunningham, were held at 2 o'clock Sunday afternoon from the Wittich Funeral home, in charge of the Rev. Ira Hawley.  Burial was in Illinois City.

Singers were Mr. and Mrs. Aaron James.  Four small girls, Helen Toyne, Maud Hain, Dorothy Rowland and Ethel Rowland were the flower attendants.

The names of Mrs. Mattie Cunningham, grandmother of the child, and Mrs. Susan Hayes, great grandmother, were not contained in the obituary notice published Saturday.

Thelma Noreen Cunningham, 13 months old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Allie (Ollie) Cunningham, 305 Brook street, died at 4:30 p. m. Tuesday at Iowa City after a four day illness with complications.

The daughter of Allie (Ollie) and Doris Ryan Cunningham, she was born May 3, 1941, in Muscatine county.

She is survived by her parents, three brothers Marlyn, Irwin, and Lawrence, and two sisters Darlene and Vivian
all at home.  She was preceded in death by one sister.

Funeral rites will be held at 2 p. m. Thursday at the George M. Wittich Funeral home, with the Rev. Paul V. Clark,
pastor of the United Brethren church in charge.  Burial will be in Illinois City cemetery.

The body will remain at the funeral home.
