In May of 2005, William Dickerson of Milford NH was able to gain access to this cemetery and has kindly submitted a number of photographs for use on this site. The cemetery is clearly in bad condition--stones are broken and the area is covered with thick overgrowth. A photo slideshow has been prepared and forwarded to the State Association for the Preservation of Iowa Cemeteries in hopes that something can be done to preserve and restore this historic burial location. The last known burial, World War I Veteran Eddie Eisele, took place in 1927.
General Location of Kiser-Eisele Cemetery
Some information provided by Nancy Neipert,
including her personal notes regarding family members buried in this cemetery.
Nancy's notes on Kiser
Cemetery:
I would like to submit the listings for the
Kiser Cemetery which I believe is located in Muscatine Co. I visited it
as girl with my father whose grandfather & grandmother (Ruhama and
Wilson Wright) were buried there.
It might be interest also that the first settler of 76 Twnshp. and 2nd settler of Muscatine Co. (Err Thornton & wife, Winifred) are buried there also. Many of the people in this cemetery also appear in the original land purchases when Muscatine Co. was still a territory and many settled before 1840. (Note- it does not appear that Err Thornton had a wife named Winifred, though he was married several times; according to further research he is buried at Drury-Reynolds cemetery in Drury twp, Rock Island Co IL. Listings for Nelson and Winifred Thornton appeared on the Golightly list found at the Musser library)
This listing is from the Muscatine File and
recollection of Sylvie Golightly who was a cousin of my father and died
after the age of 100. I have more exact dates and other names of
family members which I will not include since that info did not originate
at the Kiser Cemetery.
Additional information has since been added
to Nancy's list from other sources:
Information in RED
is from the WPA cemetery surveys done in the late 1930's.
Information in BLUE is from miscellaneous other sources and has not been verified. One of these sources is an undated listing compiled by Mrs. Wm. Golightly obtained from the Musser Public Library. Other sources in blue include family histories and items found in the LDS church files.
Items in GREEN are from various indexes of official records including marriage records, census, etc. or from photos of markers.
Underlined names are
linked to photographs of their markers.
