Kaufmann Cemetery
aka Duff or Duffee Cemetery
Section 3, Wilton Twp
Muscatine Co IA

This cemetery has been found referenced in documents at the Musser Library as the Duffee Cemetery.  The United States Geographical Survey (USGS) has mapped it as "Duff Cemetery"  located at Latitude:  413502N Longitude: 0910435W.

Records taken in the late 1930's by the Works Progress Administration  list the Cemetery as DUFFEE.  The WPA often did not document burials of children under 10 years of age.  It was clear  there were more burials at the site than were listed by the WPA.

Extensive work has been done by the Kaufmann family in recent years to restore this cemetery, and thanks to Dr. Jeff Kaufmann, we can now give you a very thorough account of this location, some Kaufmann family history, and those who were moved from Kaufmann Cemetery to Oakdale in days past.

The Kaufmann Cemetery is located in Section 3, Moscow Twp, Muscatine County, Iowa.  It lies on a sandy rise that was part of the original Gottlieb and Dorothea Kaufmann farm.  According to family legend, Gottlieb chose this family resting place himself.  It lies southwest of the original home.

Gottlieb F. and Dorothea E. (Kruse) Kaufmann came to Muscatine County from Dardesheim, Germany in 1847.  They were accompanied by their seven children, two sons-in-law, and two grandsons.  They include the following:

  • Henrietta, John, and John Mahring Jr, who settled in Johnson County, IA
  • Frederick F., Henry A., Fredericka, Christian C., and Andrew H. Kaufmann; all of these children married and,

  •    with the exception of   Christian, raised their families in Muscatine or southern Cedar Counties.

Fredericka Kaufmann met and later married a sailor on the ship named William Duffe.  They lived near the cemetery and today their descendants own the land that surrounds it.

The one acre of ground was officially deeded to the heirs of Gottlieb Kaufmann in 1868.  The cemetery is open for public burial, but the last burial was in 1926.  Renewed interest will change this fact.  The cemetery has been referred to as the Duffe Cemetery (due to the farm that surrounds it) and the Sand Hill Cemetery (due to the Sand Hill rural school in the area).

Throughout the years, relatives have sporatically gathered to clean or repair stones, although for many decades it was in great disrepair, hence the seven disinterrments.  In the late 1970's, a few interested relatives completely cleaned up the family burial ground.  A cemetery fund was started in 1981 and continues to grow.  Today the cemetery is in excellent condition.

Every summer the cemetery is visted by descendants of Gottlieb and Dorothea Kaufmann from around the nation.  These visits are in conjunction with the annual reunion for the descendants of Gottlieb and Dorothea Kaufmann.  Thousands have participated in this event, which started in 1916.  In 2000, 137 family members from 10 states gathered at the Durant Community Center for the 85th reunion.  They are always held the third Sunday in July.

The total number of descendants of Gottlieb and Dorothea Kaufmann number in the thousands and include hundred of allied families.  Some of the Muscatine County families that have married into the family include the following: Daut, Fliss, Freyermuth, Fultz, Klein, Lenker, Marolf, Miller, Riessen, Weiss, Windle and Will. (The preceding families had at least one member that married a child or grandchild of Gottlieb and Dorothea Kaufmann.)

The Kaufmann Cemetery is located about one mile north of Moscow, Iowa, on Ocean Avenue.  The cemetery is about one-fourth mile east of Ocean Avenue, and access is by a field road.

From the cemetery one can see the original Kaufmann farm, the home of William and Fredericka Duffe, and the fertile Sugar Creek valley.  The many trees in and around the grounds provide a peaceful and beautiful setting.  The tombstones not only memorialize the people buried here, but are a testimony of their pioneer spirit and faith in God.

For example, Gottlieb Kaufmann's gravestone mentions that he came to America in March, 1847 and there were 13 in his family.  Even though two of his children were married and had families of their  own, not one of his immediate family was left behind.

Litte Harry Daut was only 5 months old when he died.  His verse conveys the love and hope for him:

    Our little Harry left us.
God took him from our sight.
    From his world of sorrow
To one of joy and light.

It must have been a terrible loss when 27 year old Pauline Marolf Kaufmann died.  She was a wife and mother of two young children.  Her verse reflects the Christian hope:

Your comfort be Jesus Christ, who died for us.
It's beautiful at the place of the blessed departed
So long, until we see each other again.
