Section Twenty - Five |
|
Submitted by Eleanor B. McCleary with permission from
the Sweetland Township Trustees September 29, 2002
INTRODUCTION
Fairport is located along the banks of the Mississippi River in Muscatine County, Section Twenty-five. Originally the village was named ‘Salem’ when the plat was filed by William Chambers on 30 Nov 1838. On 6 Apr 1839, the area was re-recorded as ‘Fairport’. These documents are on file at the Muscatine County Recorder’s Office. Sweetland Township was established in 1842 according to the History of Muscatine County.
Directions to Fairport cemetery, from Muscatine, travel East on Highway 22 about seven miles. Make a left on Vail Avenue, which is a gravel road. Travel one half mile, climbing a steep hill. At Y - intersection, bear right. Fairport Cemetery is located at the top of the hill. One wonders why put a cemetery so far out of town and have such a terrain to cover so to get there. The answer may be that they wanted to be sure the burial site was well above the flood plain.
The oldest marker found in Fairport cemetery was that of Joseph B. Anderson who died 19 Jun 1840. The second oldest is Cornelia J. Mockmore who died 1 Nov 1842. We tried to find who owned the land at the time of Joseph Anderson’s death. Was he buried on family land? When Cornelia died, might she had been a close neighbor and the families just decided to lay her to rest by Joseph? At some point in time it appeared to be that little hill-side became designated as a community burial ground. By the close of 1850, sixteen people from eleven different families had been laid to rest there.
We searched Muscatine County Book of Lands in the Recorder’s Office and records in the Auditor’s Office to see if we could find a transaction under Fairport or Sweetland Township that described land being set aside for the purpose of a town cemetery. The first found was dated 24 Apr 1896, over fifty-six years after the death of Joseph Anderson. The second one was dated 2 May 1902.
In 2001 the Sweetland Township Trustees, who are in charge of Fairport Cemetery, had a problem: The cemetery Sexton of many years died. Few records were found as to who was buried where and there was a family that wanted to purchase a Lot. The Trustees did not want to sell anything until they were sure that they had a ‘free-space’. This is what got us launched into the project.
The 1896 Plat map gave the dimensions of the cemetery as South fence extending 158 ft; East fence 259.1 ft; North fence 158 ft; and West fence 259.1 ft. Two rows of lots were laid out along the West fence line going South to North. They numbered one to thirty, beginning by the south west fence corner, stacking the lots going from west to east, Lot 2 - Lot 1; next row Lot 3 - Lot 4 etc.
The 1902 Plat map did not give dimensions of the whole cemetery. The deed only described a U-shaped area that was newly laid out into 84 lots. They also renumbered the lots, designating Lot one to the North East corner of the cemetery.
At first we tried to follow the dimensions of lots as described in the 1902 Plat map but those named on markers were not following the Lot Owner records. In addition, the area in the middle of the U was filled with gravemarkers. It was so bad that we had to give up and start anew.
First thing we did was to measure the dimensions of the cemetery as it is today. Much to our surprise, we found that the cemetery parameters had changed to the South end fence extending 190 ft; East side 306 ft; North end fence 186 ft; and West side 302 ft. No wonder we were having problems!
September 26, 2002 a new Map of Gravemarkers and Lots by Eleanor & Robert S. McCleary was presented to the Sweetland Township Trustees. The map divides the cemetery into four sections: South West and South East, North West and North East. Every marker, in each section is numbered and has a defined location by note of its coordinates; ie. number of feet from North fence and number of feet from East fence, etc.
Information as to who is buried at Fairport Cemetery was gathered from many different sources:
* Those named on gravemarkers still standing in 2002.
* Sweetland Township Records.
* List compiled by Dorothy Lois Ritter in 1987 which is presented in a
book titled “Fairport” which is
on file at the Musser Public Library, Muscatine, IA. It is shelved in the
Reference Section. Her book
is a collection of newspaper clippings taken from the Muscatine Journal
covering the mid-1800’s to
mid-1980’s.
* Death records on file at the Muscatine County Court House.
* WPA Graves Registration Project Index of Muscatine County on file at Musser Public Library.
* Obituaries published in area newspapers
The following Burial Register is of persons purported to have been buried at Fairport cemetery by one or more sources listed above. Sadly, there are those that we have no clue as to where their final resting place is located. A few have been proven that they, in fact, are in a different cemetery.
Links to individuals researching those buried in Fairport
Cemetery are included under the notes section, where you will also find
links to online obituaries, biographies or other information on the individuals.

*Note from Chris
W. Altenbernd regarding ALTENBERND, Christian received 22 May
2002:
I am Christian Altenbernd's greatgrandson, Chris
W. Altenbernd. He has a tombstone in Fairport, but is actually
buried in Greenwood. By the way, his real name was Christ--with a
soft i. The tombstone maker refused to place the name of CHRIST
upon a tombstone. I often joke that I am named after my greatgrandfather's
unused tombstone.
