Veterans Memorial Marker at Conesville Cemetery

The Conesville Cemetery was rewalked on July 10 & 11, 2000 by Susie Martin-Rott and her cousin Mary Hamilton Singleton.  Mary, a lifelong Conesville area resident, also provided additional information on some of the burials including maiden names and other family relationships.

How this Database was compiled

The initial list of burials at Conesville Cemetery was found at the Musser Library in Muscatine IA.  It listed only some of the older burials and often had only a surname.  This list was then combined with the listings produced by the Works Progress Administration in the 1930's, as well as with data submitted by family members.  The resulting list was then taken to the cemetery, where we walked from stone to stone, listing all burials and comparing the data to what had been originally recorded.

One problem with the research of this cemetery is that although records were kept by the town of Conesville, during certain periods the listings were made of those purchasing the lots but not those actually buried in them.  Fortunately, someone HAD kept a record of most of them.

Used to verify lot numbers and family relationships was Mabel Estle Brown's incredible history of the Conesville-Orono-Oakland area entitled "The Fork of the Rivers: History Is People".  In some cases notations of burials appeared in the book for which we could not find markers during the walk.  These have been noted as there are some graves in the cemetery which have no markers.

We sincerely thank the late Mrs. Brown for her ten years of incredible research, and her daughter Pat Hoback for giving us permission to share some of the information from this now unavailable publication.  Without their hard work, we would never have been able to connect some of these people to the correct families.

Unidentified stones

One stone marked "Baby" between Jarrard and Porter lots
One spot where stone appears to have been (bare dirt) between the Underwood and F.H/G.M. Buser stone
One brown marble mortuary type polished stone with no engraving
Flat stone to left of WESTAWAY stone is the marker base of an infant who was moved to another part of cemetery

Mary Singleton has noted the locations of these stones and will at a later date try to identify them using the Cemetery plat book.

Updates and Information Submittals

Once the remainder of the rewalk is completed, the listings will once again be updated and more sources may then be included.
If you are researching any of the people buried in the Conesville Cemetery and would like to provide further information, corrections, or have an email link to you placed beside their name, please email with details.

Please note that errors may exist in any or all of the sources used in compiling this listing.  It is therefore recommended that it be used only as a guideline to assist you in further verification of the information.

Surname Selection

The listings have been arranged in alphabetical order as far as surname, but not necessarily first name.  This was done in some cases to allow individuals buried together to be kept as a "group" to aid in ascertaining family relationships.  You may also wish to use the SEARCH ENGINE from the main page of our site, as it will assist in locating surnames found in the "Notes" Column.  Click the link below to view surnames beginning with that letter.
