The description given was : 
"4 1/4" by 6 1/2" early photo Cabinet Card 
by Pardoe Elite Studio, 309 East Second St. Muscatine, Iowa. Two lovely little girls and their equally lovely  bisque dolls displaying great period costumes. 
Sepia finish, super condition.   
No imprint on back of photograph, but written in pencil, 
"Katie & Willie" and  "Katie M. Bruce & Willie Bruce".
Price listed was $40 plus $3.50 shipping/insurance and

Iowa 5th Infantry 
Photo taken between
27 Jan 1862 and 23 May 1862 based upon the ranks held at time of photo and the promotion dates for the individuals shown.


This photo was part of a collection of Civil War items belonging to Major William S. Robertson (in photo at right) which was sold at auction in 1999.

According to the Roster and Record of Iowa Soldiers, Maj. Robinson was born 05 June 1831 and was Commissioned on 15 July 1861. At that time his residence was listed as Columbus City, Louisa Co, IA.  He resigned on 13 July 1862 and died of paralysis on 10 July 1918  in Muscatine IA.

The gentleman to the left  is Lt. Col Charles  L. Matthias, commissioned 15 July 1861 at age 35, residence Burlington IA.
Charles was promoted to Full Colonel on 23 May 1862, disch for Promo on 29 November 1862 and on that date was  promoted to  Full Brig. General. 

Gentleman in the center is Robert F. Patterson who was Commissioned as 1st Lieut. on 15 July 1861 at age 30, a resident of Keokuk IA. Robert was promoted to Full 1st Lieut  and Quartermaster on 15 July 1861 and subsequently promoted to Full 1st Lieut & Adj  (the rank listed on the photo) on 27 January 1862. He was discharged on 01 Nov 1862.
