Located in central Iowa, Boone County is located about 45
miles northwest of Iowa's capital city of Des Moines. the city of Boone
is the county seat of Boone County. Although settlers were known to
briefly live in the county as early as 1843, the first permanent
settler, Charles Gaston arrived in 1846, the same year Iowa became a
state. Boone County was established as a county in 1847, however for a
couple of years it remained a part of Polk County for judicial, voting
and tax purposes. The county was formally organized in 1849.
In 1850, the county's population was listed as 735 people. By the
time the 2000 census was taken the county had grown to a population of
26,224.
