Generation One

1. EDMUND1 HUNT (542) was born circa 1582 at England. He died on 25 Dec 1655 at Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. His estate was probated on 29 Jul 1656 at Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts.
From Website NewEnglandAncestors.com (http://www.newenglandancestors.org/research%5Cgm_newsletter%5Ccontent%5CEDMOND%20HUNT.html): "EDMOND HUNT ORIGIN: Unknown. MIGRATION: 1634 (based on grant of land [CaTR 9]). FIRST RESIDENCE: Cambridge (based on grant of land [CaTR 9]). REMOVES: Duxbury 1637. FREEMAN: "Edmond Hunt" appears in the Duxbury section of the 1639 Plymouth Colony list of those who had taken the oath of fidelity [PCR 8:182]. OFFICES: Duxbury surveyor of highways, 4 June 1645 [PCR 2:84]. Duxbury constable, 3 June 1656 [PCR 3:99]."Edmond Hunt" appears in the Duxbury section of the 1643 Plymouth Colony list of men able to bear arms [PCR 8:189]. His inventory included "1 fowling piece & musket," valued at 1lb. 12s., "1 sword and belt," valued at 4s., and "powder horns and shot bag," valued at 3s. [PCPR 2:1:64]. EDUCATION: His inventory included "4 books" valued at 6s. [PCPR 2:1:64]. ESTATE: On 4 August 1634, "Edmo[nd] Hunt" was granted three acres in the Westend Field in Cambridge [CaTR 9]. On 21 April 1635, "Edmo[nd] Hunt" was granted a proportional share of 1/2 in the undivided meadow [CaTR 13]. In the 8 February 1635/6 list of "those men who have houses in the town at this present," "Edmond Hunt" held one in the Westend [CaTR 18]. In the 5 October 1635 inventory of Cambridge lands, "Edmond Hunte" held two parcels: "in Westend one house and backside about half an acre"; and "in Westend Field about three acres" [CaBOP 23-24]. On an unknown date (but probably in 1636 or 1637), "Edm[ond] Hunte of Newtowne" sold to Joseph Isacke of Newtown "my dwelling house with half an acre of land adjoining unto it ... & also 3 acres & 1/2 of land in the West Field & 2 acres & 1/2 meadow to be laid out at the Fresh Pond" [CaBOP 40, 52]. On 2 October 1637, "Edmond Hunt" was granted "ten acres of land ... lying across to Greene's Harbor Path" [PCR 1:66]. The inventory of the estate of "Edward Huntt of Duxburow late deceased," presented at Court 24 October 1657, totalled 51lb. 11s. 9d., with no real estate listed, and with debts owing by the estate of 8lb. 11s. 11d. and debts due to the estate of 3s. [PCPR 2:1:64]. On 3 December 1660, "the Court have ordered, that Mr. Collyare, Mr. Aldin, and the Treasurer are to meet the first Tuesday in January next, to settle matters about the estate of Goodwife Hunt, betwixt her and her children" [PCR 3:202]. BIRTH: By about 1613 (based on date of Cambridge land grant). DEATH: Between 3 June 1656 (service as constable [PCR 3:99]) and 24 October 1657 (probate of estate [PCPR 2:1:64]) (and probably closer to the latter date). MARRIAGE: By about 1640_____ _____. CHILDREN: i SAMUEL HUNT, b. about 1640 (deposed 22 December 1657 "aged 17 years or thereabouts" [PCR 3:125]); m. by an unknown date Mary _____ (in his undated will, made a bequest to "my dear and loving wife Mary" [PPR 2:172-73]). ii JOHN HUNT, b. say 1642; alive on 22 December 1657 [PCR 3:125-26]; no further record. iii THOMAS HUNT, b. say 1644; killed in battle in King Philip's War, 26 March 1676, listed as a soldier from Duxbury [Bodge 347-50, 440; TAG 60:239; Early Rehoboth 3:14-15]. COMMENTS: On 5 June 1650, "Edward Hunt, of Duxburrow," was presented "for shooting upon the Lord's Day at deer. Fined 2s." [PCR 2:156]. Two points of identification must be addresed for this immigrant. First, is the Edmond Hunt who resided briefly at Cambridge the same as the man of that name who later resided at Duxbury? Second, is the Duxbury man the father of Samuel Hunt and his two brothers? With regard to the connection between Cambridge and Duxbury, we note first that the given names "Edmond" and "Edward" were frequently used interchangeably, and nothing whatever should be made of these variations. Next, the chronology seems very precise. Hunt is last seen in Cambridge on 8 February 1635/6 [CaTR 18] and first appears in Duxbury on 2 October 1637 [PCR 1:66]. Hunt sold his Cambridge land on an unknown date, but the record of the sale is intermingled with others that are dated in 1636 and 1637. The most economical conclusion is that Edmond Hunt of Cambridge was the same man as Edmond Hunt of Duxbury. The second problem of identification is more complex. No surviving record directly credits Edmond Hunt with a wife or children, and the inventory of his estate also shows nothing that would indicate a family. We note first the record of a Goodwife Hunt, with children, just three years after the presentation of the inventory of Edmond Hunt. The three men designated to assist this family group were William Collier, John Alden and Constant Southworth (the colony treasurer), all of whom resided at Duxbury at the time. (We note also that the only other Hunt family in Plymouth Colony during this period were descended from Enoch Hunt of Weymouth, whose son Peter Hunt removed to Rehoboth [Weymouth Hist 3:312-13]. No connection between this family and the Hunts of Duxbury has appeared.) We learn who these likely children were from a series of miscellaneous records. On 22 December 1657, "Samuell Hunt, aged 17 years or thereabouts," deposed regarding Quaker activities earlier in the month at the house of "Zoeth Howland," "his brother John Hunt and Tho[mas] Delano being with him" at the time, and now concurring with his testimony [PCR 3:125-26]. The inventory of the estate of "Thomas Hunt late deceased, exhibited at Court 5 March 1676/7 on the oath of Samuell Hunt," totalled 12lb. 12s. 2d., with "a part of his father's estate" valued at 4lb.2s. 2d. and "wages due to him for soldiery" valued at 5lb. 3s. [PCPR 3:2:84]. Zoeth Howland, at whose house the Quaker activities took place, was at the time an inhabitant of Duxbury [PCR 8:95, 181; NGSQ 75:108-9], and as we have seen above, Thomas Hunt was from Duxbury. Thus, we have three brothers from Duxbury, with Samuel Hunt, born about 1640, as the common link among them. Finally, as so often happens, tracing the land records assists in the identification. On 3 September 1638, "a little parcel of land is granted to Mr. John Alden, lying at the southerly side of his lot, bounded with Greene's Harbor Path, all along the western side thereof, and with Hounds Ditch and the lands of Edward Hunt on the south side" [PCR 1:95]. On 26 January 1642[/3], Edward Hall sold to Thomas Gannett "ten acres of upland ... lying at Houndsditch in Duxborrow between the lands of Edward Hunt on the north side and John Tisdall on the south side" [PCR 12:88]. The imperfect, undated will of "Samuell Hunt of Duxbury," presented for probate on 22 July 1706, included a bequest to "my eldest son John ten acres of land lying at the head of Hounds-Ditch ... being adjacent to the farm whereon I now dwell" [PPR 2:172-73]. In summary, soon after the death of Edmond Hunt, we find in the same town where he resided a family group consisting of a widow and three sons. In 1706 the sole survivor of these three sons bequeathed to his eldest son a parcel of land in the same neighborhood as land which had been held by Edmond Hunt during his lifetime, very likely the ten-acre parcel granted to him on 2 October 1637 [PCR 1:66]. These records all come together to delineate a family group". ______________________ Edmund is the first known Hunt to settle in the New England colonies. His name first appears on Cambridge (then called 'Newtowne') records in 1634-5, only 13 years after the arrival of the Pilgrims on the ship 'Mayflower.' In the book 'The Early Hunt Families of Vermont,' (October 1990), Mitchell J. Hunt writes: 'Little information has been found on the descendants of Edmund (except through his son Samuel who inherited the Duxbury property) because fires destroyed the early records of Duxbury. An Edward Hunt lived near Edmund on Hounds Ditch in Duxbury, sold land in Duxbury in 1665 (at which time the record shows that he was married), and disappears from Duxbury and other records. Edward (was, ejh, see above) is presumed to be the father of Edward Hunt of Amesbury, MA, the start of the long line of Amesbury Hunts. ... The old 'Edmond' Hunt house in Duxbury, built in Sep 1641, remains standing and in use as a summer home in Duxbury, one of the oldest houses still in existence in America.' _______________________ In his "A Brief Corrected Genealogy of Captain Ziba Hunt (1746-1820) ...) Mitchell Hunt notes: "The name of his wife has never been discovered. There are allegations that he returned to England and m. 2d in London 10 Jun 1641 one Dorcas Oxenbridge, but there isn't the slightest evidence to support that assumption and the weight of the evidence is that London Edmond was a completely different person." (A search of the internet will show that many have bought this bill of goods, ejh) (Mitchell J. Hunt, The Early Hunt Families of Vermont (502 Church St. Willow Grove, Pennsylvania 19090: Mitchell J. Hunt, October 1990). Hereinafter cited as Vermont Hunt Families.) (Mitchell J. He was living in 1595 at Bishopsgate Ward, London, England; The English report his name as 'Edmond Hunte.' He was living in 1599 at Manchester Parish, Lancashire, England. He was was not listed in the Division of Land (Presumably, Edmund had not yet arrived in the colonies.) in 1623 at Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He was was not listed in the Division of Cattle (Presumably, Edmund had not yet arrived in the colonies.) in 1627 at Plymouth, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He was living in 1634 at Cambridge, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He lived in 1635 at Cambridge, Suffolk County, Massachusetts. He was living in 1637 at Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He was computed among those, from sixteen to sixty years old, able to bear arms in 1643 at Duxbury, Plymouth County, Massachusetts. He was Surveyor of Roads in 1645. He was proprietor of Bridgewater. Although he was a proprietor of Bridgewater, he chose to remain living in Duxbury. in 1645.

From Leslie Granat's research: http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=GET&db=granat&id=I0897 AMBROSE2 HUNT, (?John1), was probably born ca. 1715 and married 26 March 1744 to Sarah, born 2 Dec. 1726 at Little Compton, RI, dau. of Benjamin and Mary (___) Richmond.119 Sarah was sister to Rebecca Richmond who married Benson Hunt. Ambrose was the first in the family to come to Dutchess County. On 21 Oct. 1743 a sheriff’s warrant was issued for him because he owed Jacobus Von Bommell £12 sterling. [AD 1948]. He was taxed in Beekman from June 1747 to June 1748 and then from Feb. 1763 to June 1763 and was assessed at £2. He was also taxed in Crum Elbow from June 1747 through Feb. 1747/8. He was living west of Sheffield, MA in 1755 and was involved in counterfeiting, a member of the Dover Money Club.120 The General Assembly of CT, on 21 Jan. 1756 voted that several men suspected of counterfeiting should be apprehended. Among them were “Elisha Morehouse, one Hunt, a brother of Ambrose Hunt,” (etc.).121 Ambrose Hunt came to lot 15 of the Beekman Patent (Dover area) and signed a new lease in 1759 for 125 acres. Malthia Lothrop assumed Hunt’s lease ca. 1765 and posted a bond of £76/15/0 to cover back rents and interest. The credit side of the ledger reads: “This being the one half of the farm of Japheth Hunt.” [LRB 206]. He and wife Sarah were the lives on the lease 1 May 1759 and he signed the document. “He hath renewed his bond & gave new bond 31 March 1763 & clears this farm to 1 May 1762. Zacheus Swift then made a brief stay on the farm and then Levi Rowley but soon after Jacob Benson Jr. was on it. The rent book notes, no date, but ca. 1765 “deceased”. [LRB 70]. His farm was noted in a road description of 13 Oct. 1761. He was near Levi Rowley and Malthiah Lothrop. [SBP I:353]. He had an account at the Mabbett store in Washington Precinct, DC and bought sundries ca. 1763. The store account appears to show that Samuel Hunt dealt with him. He bought 75 acres of land at Lenox, MA 6 May 1764 from Jonathan Hough, sold 100 acres there the same day and sold 25 acres there 6 Sept. 1764 to C. Van Schaack.122 His wife Sarah married 2nd to ___ Cary, probably in the Pawling area, and died 16 July 1816 at Kortright. 119 Benjamin4 Richmond, (Edward3-2, John1), wrote his will at Sharon, CT 22 Feb. 1765. He named 2nd wife Mehitable and children. The distribution of the estate included 6 buckets of wheat to widow Sarah Hunt and to Rebecca, wife of Benson Hunt. Sharon, CT Probate, Book C3:146-9. Birth date for Sarah in Little Compton Families, 514, is given as 2 Nov. 1726 while Bible record shows 2 Dec. 1726. Ambrose Hunt was probably named for his first cousin, Ambrose Benson, son of William Benson, sister to Hannah Benson, wife of John Hunt. See Benson Family in SBP II:514-537. 120 Counterfeiting in Colonial CT, 143. See SBP I for more on the Dover Money Club. 121 Counterfeiting in Colonial New York, Scott, 89. 122 Deeds vol. ii:349, 487, vol. iii:31 (Leslie Granat, Nov 2007.).
