In 1855 he removed to Ellington and settled on Section 35, T. 22, R. 16, where he cleared a farm and established a home where he resided until his death in April, 1891. He married Wilhelmina Herman in 1849; they have two sons and three daughters. [photo of him]10 Carl Breiterick arrived (evidently could not recall which month; he was on the committee to gather this info).9 Evangelical Society and United Brethren
"In Outagamie County the Evangelical Society and the Reformed Church appeared first. In Greenville, at the home of Friederich Mueller, the Rev. Jacob Himmel, pastor of the Evangelical Church at Oshkosh, held meetings in 1855-1856; later others from Oshkosh continued these services. The Rev. Lienkaemper was working in Dale at this time, organizing the families who had recently come from Pennsylvania, into a Reformed Church congregation. After 12 years, in 1867, the Zion Evangelical Church of Greenville was dedicated during the ministry of a Rev. Bockemuehl. In Ellington, meetings were organized in 1858; a church, the Emmanuel Evangelical Church, was dedicated in 1864. The founders of this church were the families of Christian Saiberlich and Carl Breitrich. A second church was built in 1876 but in 1924 the congregation had become so small that the church was closed and the building sold." [continues about these denominations]11 Carl Breiterick's PO address.9 Preliminary meeting of the Otagamie County Pioneer Association
The Appleton Crescent published a call 10 Feb 1872 for the county pioneers to meet at the hall of J.C. Smith in Appleton.
Carl Breiterick was appointed to a committee to list names of all heads of families and when they came to Outagamie.
The Association was formed with much detail.12 Pioneers' meeting: short speech made by "Carl Breitruck."13 Pioneers' meeting:
"Charles Breterick spoke of pioneer life in Ellington."14 Pioneers' meeting:
Remarks by Charles Breiterick, of Ellington.15 Pioneers' meeting:
"Remarks by Charles Breiterick, of Ellington, giving his pioneer experience."16 Pioneers' meeting:
Remarks by Chas. Breiterick, of Ellington.17 Pioneers' meeting:
Hon. Geo. H. Myers gave the annual address and said "A couple of hours after I first met Seymour Hare I met Charles Breiterick in the town of Greenville, on a path in the woods. He could not talk English at all, but I made him understand that I wished to go to Appleton and did not know the way. he went with me a mile or more out of his way to put me on theright path. I saw him no more until the Shoiffier trial in May, 1854, wen we renewed our acquaintance, and we have kept it up to the present time." (p. 92)
"At the conclusion of Judge Myer's address Mr. Breiterick, of Ellington, related his experiences of pioneer life in Outagamie county. His remarks were interesting throughout.
...Judge Ryan, a gentleman who is always prepared to crack a joke at the expense of a friend, related how Mr. Breiterick, familiarly known in olden times as the flying Dutchman, bought a legal paper, supposing it was a town order." (p. 95).18 Pioneers' meeting:
"Carl Breiterick told some of his pioneer experiences in settling Outagamie County."19 Pioneers' meeting:
"Charles Breiterick, of Ellington, said he came to the county in 1859 with $120 in his pocket and settled near New London when about the only dwellers thereabouts were Indians. At first he became discouraged but at length built a log house and settled down with a determination of making it a home. He now had onlythe pleasantest memories of his former hardships and was grateful to Heaven for the measure of blessings and comfort that had crowned his early efforts."20 Pioneers' meeting:
original membership limited to those who settled in county prior to July 4, 1853; since extended right to all residents prior to 1860.
"Anecdotes and experiences of pioneer life were then related by Rev. John Faville, Mr. Breiterick of Ellington, Wm. Briggs of Appleton, Mr. Manley of Ellington."21 Pioneers' meeting:
Mr. H. D. Ryan said:About those days the leading business men were J. W. Woodward or C. G. Adkins, A. McNaughton (J. S. Buck, manager), Phinney Bros., A. C.Darling, a druggist named Bennett, W. S. Warner, Reeder Smith, Charles Mory and 'Uncle Peter' White."
Those who spoke subsequently were... Charles Breiterick of Ellington...22 C. J. Breiterick of the Freedom Cheese facgtory drew first prize at Wisconsin State fair at Milwaukee for three best Cheddar cheese, his cheese scaled 95-2/3 points in a scale of 100 for perfection. Pretty good for Freedom factory and for Charley, as the same factory drew 3rd prize at State fair last year. Pioneers' meeting:
