DeathDec 24, 2015Spokane, WA, USA
ObituaryJan 16, 2016SPOKANE, Wash. — Thomas Leo Houghton passed away Dec. 24, 2015, at Holy Family Hospital in Spokane. He was born Jan. 17, 1942, in Peoria to Dr. Earl J. and Genevieve T. (Fleischman) Houghton. The oldest of six children, he grew up in Bettendorf, attending Our Lady of Lourdes Elementary School, and then graduating from Assumption High School in 1960 and St. Ambrose College in 1964. He worked as a mechanical engineer, first in Davenport, before moving to Chicago to work for Vapor Corporation from 1985 until his retirement in April of 2011.

Tom enjoyed working on cars, and was never without some vehicle to work on, either his own or one belonging to a friend. Starting in high school with a 1953 Willys until his last car, a 1966 Austin Healy Sprite, Tom always had a project to keep him busy. He built and drove several drag race cars, as well as a number of Formula Vee open-wheel cars. His next adventure involved learning to fly and building two experimental aircraft. A wonderful mechanic, he was never satisfied until his project was the way he thought it should be. He was the first of his siblings to take up snow skiing, he rode motorcycles, built and flew R/C model airplanes and played golf, among other hobbies.

Upon retirement, Tom relocated to Spokane to be closer to family. He is survived by his brother, James (Maddy) Houghton, Spokane; four sisters, Judith (Jeff) Olson, Hood River, Ore., Susan (Rudy) Bierig, Kristine (Ray) Gross and Joan (Ron) Cloke, all of Spokane; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. Tom also enjoyed his role as great-uncle to the next generation of children. Tom succumbed to leukemia after a three-year battle.

He was preceded in death by his parents and will be laid to rest beside them.

A graveside memorial service will be held this spring in Spokane. Arrangements have been entrusted to Catholic Funeral and Cemetery Services of Spokane.
