San Antonio, TX, USA, Shari Anne Shaw was born in Perryton, Texas on December 13, 1930 to an oil-boomer father, and a mother who was one of the state's first female pilots. Little Shari Anne moved frequently and grew up in rough oil camps. She was her father's hunting companion and a pretty fair tap dancer and ice skater for her mother. After high school Shari attended Kansas State, but later returned home to help with the family business. She worked part-time for the family doctor, and was secretary for her father. The best secretary he ever had, he would often say.

Shari met Dick Houghton in Abilene on a blind date to which they both objected. It was true love; they were soul mates forever. He was an Air Force pilot always on-call and she was the ultimate manager. Shari juggled the schedule of her TDY husband, five children, her bridge club, and the duties of an officer's wife and made it look simple. She moved 28 times in 26 years, very often moving every thirteen months, and always had the house set up and ready for entertaining within two days.

Shari did everything well; she was the epitome of grace and diplomacy. From the beginning she instilled a strong sense of self and devotion to family and country. She taught her children to grow where you are planted, and always leave a place better than you found it. She said we should live fast because we were moving again soon! Wherever her husband Dick was stationed, that was home, and even when he was on TDY, we were together as a family, taking care of each other. Shari beautifully managed any crisis: The Cuban Missile Crisis, while eight months pregnant, and with two pre-schoolers who let all the air out of her tires, a complete base blackout, and one trapped frightened civilian housekeeper. She managed through children's broken bones, eye surgeries, a ruptured appendix, difficult pregnancies, and heart surgery. She was there through all of them. Shari was a gourmet chef, diplomat, crafter, debutante, counselor, disciplinarian, and single parent. She was strong willed, strong minded, and outspoken; you knew where she stood and she was a true and loyal friend.

She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Dick and leaves five grown children with spouses, Lin Houghton Mueller of Humble, Tx, Chuck and Diane Houghton of Mineola, Rick and Denise Houghton of Round Rock Tx., Dan and Teri Houghton of San Antonio, Tx., Leslie Houghton Cole of Austin Tx., and ten grandchildren: Carlton and John Mueller, Leah Houghton, Lindsay Houghton Simon, Danielle and McKenna Houghton, Blake Cole, Garrett, Walker, and Conner Houghton. Her friends should know that she is happily holding a grand-slam!

Obituary

On June 22, 2016, after a brave, defiant four-year fight with cancer and surrounded by his loving family, Richard T. Houghton passed away at the age of 58. Rick, as he was known to family and friends, had a long, successful career and worked at the Austin based company Epicor Software for the last eight years. Prior employers include Bell Helicopter; Hurst, TX, Raytheon Systems (now L3 Communications); Waco, TX, and Dell Computers; Round Rock, TX. Rick was born in Big Spring, TX in 1958 to Dick and Shari Houghton. As the son of an Air Force Pilot he grew up all over the country attending a new school almost every year. He attended the U.S. Air Force Academy for two years, and graduated from Angelo State University in 1980. He served in the USAF for five years as a Contract Officer before entering the private sector. At the time of his honorable discharge, he was one of the youngest contracting officers given unlimited warrant. He was kind, generous, incredibly smart, and had an extremely endearing very corny sense of humor. He was a wonderful husband, father, brother, son, coach, mentor and friend. He loved and was loved beyond measure and will be missed greatly by all who knew him. He is survived by his wife of 25 years, Denise Houghton, sons Garrett, Walker, and Conner Houghton, daughter Lindsay Simon, and siblings Lin Mueller, Lindsay, and Dan Houghton.
