ObituaryDec 10, 2008George Frederick Houghton, 71, of Lanesboro, Pa., went to be with his Lord on Tuesday, December 2, 2008, at Barnes-Kasson Hospital surrounded by his loving family after his illness with cancer. George is predeceased by his late father, George L; and his stepmother, Lillian Houghton; his mother, Eva Holiday Houghton; and his sister, Lillian Houghton. He is survived by his loving wife, Jonyca; his children, Scott and Angie Houghton, Sydney Kathleen and Jeremy Brown and their mother, Beverly A. Houghton; stepchildren, Catherine and William Chamberlain, Kelly and Jason Heeman; three grandsons, Cody John, Morgan Scott, and Willard George; six stepgrandchildren, and five step great-grandchildren; three brothers and their wives, Harold and Carol Houghton, Harry and Florence Houghton, and Elmer and Anne Houghton; several nieces and nephews. George was born in Stevens Point, Pa. on January 27, 1937. He attended Stevens Point Grade School and graduated from Susquehanna Consolidated High School in 1954. He received an appointment to the United States Military Academy at West Point and attended for one year. He was then hired by the IBM Corporation in Endicott, N.Y., during which he took time out to spend two years with the US Army. He returned to IBM and worked as a Program Analyst and worked his way up to Project Manager. After 36 years of service, he retired from IBM in 1992. Later, he received his real estate license and presently worked for Century 21 Mitchell Real Estate. In addition, he helped develop the sewer system with the New Milford Municipal Authority. He moved to Lanesboro in 2004 and was elected to the town council. He joined the Presbyterian Church USA and became an Ordained Deacon. He was currently a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Hallstead, Pa. George was a very well-liked and respected member of the community and had many friends and acquaintances.
A Memorial Service will be held at the First Presbyterian Church of Hallstead, Pa., on Saturday, December 6th, 2008, at 4:30 with Reverend Nancy Cubitt officiating. The family will receive friends at the church on Saturday, December 6th, 2008, from 1:30 to 4:30. A very special thank you is to be offered to the nurses at the Barnes-Kasson Hospital for the love and care they had shown George in the last few months of his life. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the First Presbyterian Church of Hallstead, Pa., the Susquehanna County Library, or the American Red Cross.3

A Woman's Sad History; The Troubles of a Poor Unfortunate
Woman Who Was Born in Watertown
S h e Died after years of Suffering and Neglect.
The death of Mrs. Alma Bartles, a former resident of Jefferson County, occurred
in the city of Philadelphia a few days ago. There was only one mourner at her funeral,
her five year-old son Stephen. She has had a world of trouble, and the following facts
relative to her life, gathered from the New York Herald, will no doubt be interesting
to our readers . Her maiden name was Alma Shew and she .was born in Watertown in 1846. She was carefully brought up and received an excellent education. Alma 1870 she married Dr. Bartles, of Williamsport, Pa., and
went there to reside where her beauty became a popular craze. After having borne
her husbands three children;she was taken ill and was sent to Philadelphia, where she
was attended by one of the best physicians of that city. She returned to Williamsport,
apparently restored to health, but occasionally had strange delusions. After the birth
of her. fourth child, In the winter of 1879 she was attacked with fever and only recovered after a lingering illness. Her mind was visibly weakened, and she did the oddest things at times. One evening when a number of her neighbors-had called at her
house aud were seated in her parlor, she suddenly sprang to her feet and said impulsively "My Philadelphia physician is the father of my last child." Everybody present
saw that the poor woman was hysterical.
She might just as readily have 'said John Brown or Thomas Jefferson and her
assertion would have attracted as little comment She was known and believed to be
a pure woman, and the distinguished physiclan whom she maligned in her wild language stood on a pedestal as high above such calumny as did John Wesley. The visitors
hastily departed and the sick woman was put to bed. When she recovered, to the
amazement of everybody else, the husband began an action for.divorce in a Williamsport court, based on tbe alleged confession,and under the Pennsylvania laws obtained release from his bonds. He kept three of the children; but the unfortunate boy, the cause of Mrs. Bartles' illness and delusion, was awarded to the mother. The mother and child went to Brooklyn and lived a while with her cousin, Mrs. Lucy Sinclair.
She then went to Philadelphia, where her story had preceded her, and when her presence in Philadelphia became noised about the attorney of the slandered physician took
a most remarkable course, Instead of causing the woman's detention in a hospital, as
should have been done, George W. Biddle advised his client to pay about $15,000 into
the hands of the Fidelity Trust company for the benefit of the boy. It is also alleged
that $5,000 or more, were given to the woman to purchase the silence of her tongue.
The woman declared the physician's Innocence and he was blackmailed on all sides
and led a life of torture for two years. An attempt was made to depose him from the
presidency of an educational Institution, but the distinguished physician held his ground
and many highly honorable members of the society, such as George V. Obilds, A. J.
Droxel, A. K. McClure, Philip C. Garrett, J. B.Llppincott, E. C. Knight, Thomas
McKeon and the entire medical faculty of Philadelphla, headed by Dr. D. Hayes Agnew,
rallied to his support and. defense. During this time Alma Bartles was living
in seclusion in West Philadelphia, where she became known as the "veiled woman,"
from her attire when on the street She lived on her income of $ 15 a week from the
fund in the trust company and by making flowers. All her valuable clothing was taken
possession of by anonymous relatives and sent to New York, and when she died
she was almost destitute of clothing. During her last illness, as her sufferings grew
more acute her mind became perfectly clear, and to several witnesses she solemnly declared that the physician whom she had gravely accused was wholly blameless. She repeated this statement with her dying breath.
Her last hours furnish a most heartless example of family neglect. Her own relatives
abandoned her utterly and she was mostly cared for by outsiders. Her husband
refused to come and see her die, tho' she sent the most agonizing appeals by mail
and telegraph. Many noble- hearted people volunteered and rendered aid, among them
being Mrs. Dr. William Thompson. Dr. and Mrs. Andrews, Mrs. and Miss Rldgeway
and others. Mrs. Lucy Sinclair of Amity street, Brooklyn, was the only relative present
during the last hours of the dying lady, and the statements of all the visitors to the
room of death show conclusively that her end was of the saddest character. The
utmost desire of her relatives seemed to be to get her out of sight and an undertaker was sent to her before she was dead to see what slze coffin she would need. The woman's father [Joel died in 1855] and husband sent word that her body could not rest among their dead. The cousin repeatedly announced in the presence of witnesses that the child, Stephen, would be sent to the orphan asylum were it not for the trust fund held for his benefit The corpse was shipped to Watertown, N. Y., and finally found sepulcher [tomb/grave] in some unknown God's acre that unkind humanity can not disturb. The unfortunate and neglected child was taken to Brooklyn. Mrs. Charles Bartles, an aunt of the deceased, visited Philadelphia apparently as a commissioner for the mistaken husband, who, unintentionally perhaps, and doubtless with the purest' Christian motives, refused final absolution to a hopeless and penitent soul."19
Death: She died on 25 February 1885 at 134 Woodlawn Ave., 27th Ward, Philadelphia, Montgomery Co., Pennsylvania, at age 39 According to her death certificate, she died of Alluminuria.19,20,21
Burial: She was buried Old Evans Mills Cemetery, LeRay Twp., Evans Mills, Jefferson Co., NY, "Alma Bartles daugh of Dr. Joel Shew Died Feb 24, 1885 AE 39yrs" Her father Joel Shew is not in this cemetery, but she is buried next to her grandparents Godfrey I & Betsey Beecher Shew.22,21

Seth Houghton b. 1781-90 could be a son of Seth Houghton and Sarah Wheeler and b. c. 1783 Massachusetts. Seth first appears on the 1818 asessment list (compiled fall of 1819) of Jackson Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania. On the 1820 assessment list, unable to pay for schooling of daughter Sally. Enumerated in Jackson in 1820 with three males under age ten (b. 1811-20), one male of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94), one female under age ten (b. 1811-20), and one female of age twenty six and under age forty five (b. 1776-94). On the 1821 assessment list unable to pay for schooling of children Sally, Augustus, and Joseph; 1822, Sally and Augustus; 1823, Sally age 9, Augustus age 7, and Seth F. age 5. Enumerated in Rutland Township in 1830 with one male of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one male of age ten and under age fifteen (b. 1816-20), one male of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-15), one male of age forty and under age fifty (b. 1781-90), three females under age five (b. 1826-30), one female of age five and under age ten (b. 1821-25), one female of age fifteen and under age twenty (b. 1811-25), and one female of age thirty and under age forty (b. 1791-1800). On the 1833 Sullivan assessment list is the notation “removed.” His neighbors in the 1830 census enumeration were the Curtis and Gifford families who embraced the Mormon faith and went west and perhaps also the reason the Houghton family removed from the area.

In an address given by Ross G. Watkins at the Old Rutland Hill Church on August 16, 1942 he stated – “One item which has seemingly escaped attention was the coming of two Mormon Elders and their flock to the scene. They strewed the countryside with their propaganda and soon the excitement was intense. Then more of them came until quite a colony was formed. After a bit, some opposition arose and they, with some of the settlers who embraced their faith, moved to near Liberty, Pa, where they founded the village of Nauvoo. (Meaning the beautiful.) There, more persecution arising, they moved to Illinois and founded a city also called Nauvoo in the year 1839. During a riot in 1844, Joseph Smith, the leader and his brother were killed and the building of their temple was stopped. Then Brigham Young led them on to Utah. During their stay here it seems they occupied this farm as I remember it, they left four of their number, two adults and two children to mingle with the dust on that knoll up there. As long as George Tanner owned this farm, he kept some field stones in place to mark their final resting place and inplaying around the old orchard as children, my cousin and I came upon them and were told by the old folks why they were there. What their names were or where they came from is all conjecture now but perhaps some older and abler
historian might be able to find out and if so, I would like to hear from them (History of the Old Rutland Church, Rutland Township, Tioga County, Pennsylvania, Ross G. Watkins, 1942).
