Biography"The "History of Barnard, Vt.", pages 988 & 989, states that this family name was spelled "Moores" in the early days. Some family members are buried in the Moore Family Cemetery, off Lime Pond Road near East Barnard, in the pasture of the Boyden place. Gardner was listed as head of household at Putney in 1800. They had lived at Bolton and Winchendon, Ma. and Putney, Vt., where he died, according to Moore Genealogy. Putney VR list him as Gardner 2nd, so grandfather may have had same name and there may have been a son of that name. It is not known where he is buried. His wife is in the Moore's family cemetery in East Barnard in the same lot with Capt. Jonathan Moore (headstone list sent by Marian Leavitt Levasseur, from Billings Farm Museum records).

In addition to wife Abigail and daughter Azuba, other stones in the cemetery read: Joseph Ashley born Oct 12, 1872 E 61, Anna Robertson Alston 1861-1946, and a stone with 2 names for Ralphie Charmie (no dates) and Marie F. Reefe 1895-1949.

Gardner served in various units during the Revolutionary War - as a corporal in Capt. Robert Longley's company, Col. Asa Whitcomb's regt.in 1775 - with Capt. Manasseh Sawyer's company, Col. Pike's regt. 1776/77, at Dorchester - as a 2nd Lt. in Capt. Jonathan Whitcomb's 13th company, 2nd Worcester regt. of Mass. Militia 1779 - as a (sgt?) major in August 1775 - as sgt. in Capt. Jonathan Gates's company beginning Oct. 1, 1777. He was at the battle of Saratoga for 26 days including travel time."1

BiographyNotes for ABIGAIL "ABBA" MOORE:
Various sources refer to her as Annie or Abbie. As a young woman she had auburn hair. Son Newman mentions in his family story his deep affection and esteem for her. He cites one situation where he and his entire household was ill with diptheria, and his mother arrived with her suitcase, saying "Grace, let me in. I've come down to die with you". Antitoxin, which was new at that time, saved them all.

Notes for LEVI DUDLEY LEAVITT:
As a young man he worked on a farm in North Royalton for five years and then married the daughter of the household. This first wife was Ellen Davis, whom he married May 1, 1861. She died just a month later, of quick consumption. Newman's family story also mentions an unnamed little sister who died at six months. Cora was born at what was known as the old Leavitt place in Gambell District, where the Soulias lived quite long. Newman was born at the Webb place, where his parents lived for just a few months. Kate and Luna were born in the home where the four children grew up, later occupied by Galen and Ethel.

The 1870 census shows him with Abbie and their first two children, plus Chloe Moore, his wife's mother, in the household.

Called "Dudley", he and Abigail settled on a low hill overlooking the town of East Barnard and lived there over 40 years. The one-story 3 room ell was built in 1810 and the two-story part was built about 1835 by Chauncey Wolcott.

Newman describes him as a farmer who had sideline activities to help him get ahead. He sold wagons and farm machinery. When mowing machines first came on the market he sold "The Champion" for a firm based in Springfield, Ohio. Soon came the horserake, which replaced the bullrake. Newman complains that they always did their farm work with oxen, and he hated the slow pace. Levi once raised a Chester White pig which he exhibited at the Johnsbury State Fair of 1872. It was 2 years old and weighed 1224 pounds. Low prices kept him from selling the pig at age 1 so he kept feeding him. When the right time came the pig was too large to scald so he was skinned and the hide sold to a tannery in Woodstock.

Levi was active locally as Justice of the Peace for 18 years, a constable and notary public, and Lister of Barnard. In the Civil war he volunteered and was in Company G of !st Vermont Volunteers (another source says the 16th Vermont Infantry) and was at Gettysburg. When he returned from the war he was sick with typhoid fever and it lingered for a long while. Later, he was a member and commander of the South Royalton GAR. In his later years he ran the stage between East Barnard and South Royalton. The team consisted of two mares named Martha and Frank, raised by his brother Amos. There is no explanation of the choice of names.

The 1883-84 Business Directory of Barnard lists him as being in East Barnard off road 72, a justice of the peace, a dealer in agricultural implements, breeder of Jersey cattle and having 8 dairy cows on his 125 acre far.2
