Biography2007Dr. Houghton teaches courses and supervises graduate theses in northern European art, 1400-1750. Before coming to Penn State in 1999, she taught at Duke University. She has been the recipient of both a Prado Museum/Duke University Research Residency in Madrid, Spain, and of a Fulbright Fellowship to Belgium, where she undertook the archival research for her dissertation on the work of Pieter Aertsen. She has published part of this study in The Burlington Magazine, and her “This Was Tomorrow: Pieter Aertsen's Meat Stall as Contemporary Art” appeared in The Art Bulletin (June 2004). For the latter article, she received the College of Arts and Architecture’s 2005 Roy C. Buck Award for Outstanding Publication. Dr. Houghton has also recently reviewed books for both Renaissance Quarterly and Sixteenth Century Journal. Her research interests include the social and political functions of early modern art, as well as issues of sexuality and queerness in Renaissance imagery throughout Europe. She is working on a book entitled “Eros and Erasure in Michelangelo's Early Sacred Art,” and has presented papers related to this project at the College Art Association, the Association of Art Historians (England), and the Renaissance Society of America. Dr. Houghton is also working on a book tentatively titled Imago Ludens: Playfulness in Early Netherlandish Art. She is a recipient of the College of Arts and Architecture Faculty Award for Outstanding Teaching (2001), and of an Institute for the Arts and Humanities Research Residency. In 2007, Dr. Houghton received a Penn State Teaching Fellow Award for Excellence in Teaching, one of three awarded across the statewide Pennsylvania State University system.3

NoteBeierlein, Gill and Houghton named 2007 Penn State Teaching Fellows
Tuesday, April 10, 2007

University Park, Pa. -- James G. Beierlein, professor of agricultural economics, Penn State University Park; Deborah Gill, associate professor of Spanish, Penn State DuBois; and Charlotte M. Houghton, associate professor of art history, Penn State University Park, each have won The Alumni/Student Award for Excellence in Teaching and have been named a 2007 Penn State Teaching Fellow.

Houghton, who
specializes in the visual culture of early modern northern Europe, has taught courses ranging from hundreds of students to individual independent studies. In large or small classes, colleagues say Houghton is always able to establish an active discourse by placing art into social, political, economic, religious and philosophical contexts.

A dedicated and much sought-after undergraduate adviser, she has served as departmental liaison to the Undergraduate Art History Association. Houghton has been recognized for her teaching abilities by the College of Arts and Architecture. In 2001, just two years after joining the Penn State faculty, she received the college’s Award for Outstanding Teaching.

Having authored articles and reviews in journals among the most prestigious in her field, the college previously recognized her with the Roy Buck Award for Outstanding Publication. She is currently at work on two book projects, and in 2003 received a Resident Scholar Research Fellowship from Penn State’s Institute for the Arts and Humanities. She also brings to her teaching a diverse background. She owns a bachelor’s degree in Italian Renaissance history from Harvard and a juris doctorate from Boalt Hall School of Law at U.C. Berkeley. She previously worked as a political consultant and campaign manager in California.

Colleagues and former students cited Houghton’s abilities as a speaker in the classroom and her advising capabilities, noting her proficiency in identifying students who show potential to become future professors. She is noted for taking a proactive approach in assisting students, meeting with them consistently throughout their undergraduate careers and beyond.4

EmailSep 11, 2007Dear Charlie,

What fun to learn about you and your project. No, I still have no idea who the other Canandaigua Charlotte Houghton was (I mean in terms of our genealogy), but will probably visit her grave the next time I'm there to see what's up with it. I'm sure, though, that it is the Charlotte born 1864 that you have. She died in 1947. Was married to Charles C. Sackett. My father, William Pringle Houghton, is doing pretty well at 91, living alone in a large, Greek Revival home in the countryside that he and my mother (Marie Josephine Burgert Houghton) restored from decrepitude with their own hands in the late 1940s. It is now on the National Register of Historic Homes. He was in active middle-age till he turned 90, but has slowed down some now. Still, he rides his ATV around his 100 acres, mows a lot of grass, and was recently repointing his foundation when I called. I visit him every six weeks or so. His sister, Hess, is 97, and lives on her own in Cooperstown, NY. She's getting a little unsteady physically, but not mentally. Don't know what you'd like to add to your site. Actually, you have my Aunt's birth date wrong. It's JUNE 27, not May 27 (1910). William Morris, my grandfather, was editorial editor of the New York Herald Tribune. I also have fascinating letters from William Addison's stay in Japan.
I'm a Berkeley Alum, too. Boalt Law, '75. Clearly we were both on campus there together in the early 70's. Where were you when Patty Hearst was kidnapped?
I get to L.A. every few years--my husband, Gilbert Friedman, is from there. But I'm seldom in the Bay Area any more, though I lived in both Berkeley and San Francisco 1972-76. I do get to New York and Philadelphia often and easily. Let me know if you'll be in the northeast and would like to meet.
I'm eager to get your files to my father, aunt and cousins. The cousins are tech savvy, but W.P. and H.P. have declined the digital revolution, so I'll have to send or deliver this stuff to them. We have a lot of genealogical material, but not so neatly laid out for our branch. Thank you so much.
(Hope this doesn't offend you, but I'm a bit concerned about the "Prescott" connection many generations back. That's a GWBush ancestor's name, isn't it?)
Best wishes to you and to my 9th cousin, Marilyn. (When I was 4 or 5, I had a dear--and totally imaginary--friend named Marilyn, who married the equally fictional Tom Pooplepalm. Put that in your database!)
Charlotte
