ResearchHer maternal grandfather was William Alexander Masterson who's sister Margaret died along with her husband and six of their children, and a number of other people, by Indians just out side of Boise in 1854. The event, according to a historical plaque, resulted in a military retaliation that so angered the Indians that the Hudson's Bay company had to shut down Forts Boise and Hall and Oregon Trail travelers needed military escorts to be safe for the next 8 years.

A third-generation Oregonian born and raised in Eugene, he lived most of his adult life in Portland and later in Beaverton. A career executive with Pacific Northwest Bell in Portland, Raymond graduated from the University of Oregon in 1940. ObituaryApr 27, 2011Bend, Deschutes Co., OR, USA, Bulletin, The (Bend, OR) - April 27, 2011
Deceased Name: Donovan Gilbert Don Houghton
Sept. 15, 1927 - April 19, 2011

Donovan Gilbert Don Houghton passed away in Bend, April 19, after a 2 year battle with cancer. Don was born in his grandmother's home in Yamhill, OR, September 15, 1927, then was raised in the Florence area. The first three years were spent on the North Fork of the Siuslaw River before moving to the coast. Don's father became a partner with a man who had purchased property on the coast with the specific intention of opening the Sea Lion Caves. In 1930, his father and the original owner were joined by another partner, and thus began the difficult and dangerous task of preparing the business for its opening in 1932.

The family lived in a small cabin near the Caves, on the hillside above Hwy 101, with no electricity or plumbing. Later, they built their permanent home below Hwy 101. Don went to Florence schools through his sophomore year, then his family moved to Portland in 1943, for the remainder of the war. He graduated from Franklin High School in 1945, and after two terms at the U of O, he joined the Army in the spring of 1946. He served for 1-1/2 years, then returned to U of O, graduating in 1950.

In 1952, his father, Gib, retired and Don joined a three way partnership at the Sea Lion Caves, where he was active until he sold his part of the business in 2006. In 1953, Don married Gloria Cooper, from Edmonton, Alberta. They lived by the Caves, in the same house where Don had grown up, until 1965 when the family moved to Florence, OR. While in Florence, Don was an avid rhododendron gardener, active in the Rhododendron Club, and served on the school board for 8 years. He also enjoy many camping trips with his family, steelhead and salmon fishing, and deer hunting trips to eastern Oregon. Don purchased property on Woahink Lake in the late 1960s. He built two boat houses, where his family and friends enjoyed many wonderful days. Don and Gloria eventually built a house at the lake, where they lived for 10 years, before moving to Sunriver in 1988, and later to Bend in 1997. While living in Central Oregon, he was able to enjoy snow skiing and his long-time passion, golf.

Don is survived by his wife of 58 years, Gloria, their three children, Debbie Houghton and Barb Smith of Beaverton, and Tom Houghton of Lake Oswego, and four grandchildren, Jared, Curtis, Sarah and Luke. He is also survived by his sister, Ardice, of Eugene, and was preceded in death by his sister, Jean, in 1975, and his grandson, Kyle, in 2007.

A Celebration of Life will be held Sunday, May 22nd at 1:30, at the Bend Golf & Country Club. Memorial contributions may be made to Partners In Care, Hospice House, Bend Oregon.3

ResearchMeretta, my mother, is Hannah Meretta McMANN, dtr of Arthur Robinson and Hannah Mary (BUCHANAN) McMann, he from New Brunswick, she from Prince Edward Island. Meretta and Winefred (last name unknown) were both raised by the Rev. and Minnie, but neither were ever adopted. My brother and I both called Winefred, "AuntWinnie" but, although she took the Haughton last name, her true relationship to the Haughtons and to us is not known.

My grandmother, Hannah Mary Buchanan of PEI, Can., died at age 20 when my mother, Hannah Meretta McMann, was three years old. My mother was sent to live with her (great aunt?), Minnie Steeves, and her husband, the Reverence Haughton. My mother lived with the Haughtons until she married
