Sherrill F. Houghton

This 92-year-old was a self-described tough guy from the San Francisco Excelsior District and who his family thinks had a generous heart, strong work ethic and boundless energy especially in his care for his family and wife of 70 years. "Forever isn't enough" is what he would write in love letters to Joan Heaney, the tall beauty from the Richmond District and the eldest of her large extended family. Both 3rd generation San Franciscans their love for the city was always present along with their devotion to each other.
Preceded in death by his parents Sherril D. and Frances Chamberlain Houghton, Sherrill grew up in the neighborhood baseball fields as a semi-pro shortstop and competitive swimmer and graduated from Balboa High School. As a lifeguard, he met the love of his life at 18 at the summer resort area of Boyes Hot Springs. He was the first in his family to complete college and was a proud USF Don, graduating in 1950. He married that October and was drafted into the army and the Korean Conflict by the end of the year. Fate dealt them great providence as he and other college graduates were assigned to set up a Command Office in Europe and was joined by his bride to live in Germany and build newlywed memories to last a lifetime.
Sherrill had a strong work ethic taking on extra jobs to make ends meet and gained his master's degree on weekends from Pepperdine University. He spent over 25 years in School Business Administration in San Bruno, Oakland and Redwood City and was much admired by his colleagues forming deep friendships and respect at all levels.
Sherrill raised five independent children encouraging their dreams and celebrating their graduations and accomplishments. His children: Scott (Kay); Sue (Joe) Devine; Jim (d) (Joyce O'Connor); Lynne (Joanne Giono); Tricia (Darren) Line are honored to continue his legacy of hard work, kindness, and attention to family. He was a patriarch and loving uncle to: Monica Clark (Peter) Tim (Elvia), Dennis (d), Matt (Kathleen), and Al Smyth; Denise Heaney (Jesse) and Linda Lopache and could be relied on to listen and offer sincere support.
He loved being called "Pa" by his ten grandchildren: Sara, Conor, Brian Houghton; Joey, Ryan (d), Brendan Devine; Henry, Lily O'Connor-Houghton; Hannah and Shea Line and had endless praise, interest, and love for them all.
Sherrill was a great conversationalist and connected with people. He loved following the SF Giants, Warriors, and 49ers as well as live theater and movies with the Tony's and the Oscar's as must-see TV. He was an avid golfer and appreciated books and music and was always up on current events. Most importantly he loved his family and his forever love from San Francisco.
Sherrill died on January 2nd, 2021 at home in the loving embrace of his family. Published in San Francisco Chronicle from Jan. 8 to Jan. 10, 2021.
