BiographyI am always proud to tell people that have taken five foreign language classes in my life: French I, French I, Finnish I, Finnish I, and Finnish I. I am without a doubt one of the worst language students ever to sit in the back of a classroom. I have a bad memory, and since many other subjects came easily to me, I never developed certain basic skills of learning a new language. Which in a roundabout way is why I co-founded a language education company.

David and I began collaborating on what would later become Linguru while I was studying and working in Helsinki, Finland. I went there to learn more about my mother's native country and to study business. In the four years since graduating in electrical engineering from Tennessee Technological University, I had been working in software development and product marketing jobs at Sonix, a small ultrasonic testing and data acquisition equipment manufacturer on the outskirts of Washington, D.C. The International Business Linkage Program at Helsinki University of Technology provided an excellent start to what would be a very pleasant four-year stay. When I found time to study, I worked on my MBA and Master's in industrial management, including a thesis for Sonera about new telecommunications service businesses: Complexity, Knowledge, and Strategy in Telecommunications Service Development and Transfer.

Sonera, formerly known as Telecom Finland, is the leading services company in one of the most advanced telecommunications markets in the world. Their innovations in Internet and mobile communications provided a string of extremely interesting projects while I worked in the corporate research, new business development, and new media units as a business analyst and business development manager. Participating in the early development of two internal ventures reinforced my interest in small companies. After thinking for a long time about what I really wanted from the Internet that I could not get already, I sent an e-mail to the best linguist I knew. I asked him if he was interested in quitting his job as a cashier and produce specialist at a food co-op to develop a new tool for learning foreign languages.

The result is before you. Since we were/are both marginally homeless, we relocated to Nashville, Tennessee and settled into long hours of work and conversation. Here we set up an advanced network in the proverbial garage and greenhouse of my father. We have spent the last two years (OK, we did leave the greenhouse occasionally during that time) developing the dictionary software and support business that you find presented on this site. We hope that it makes a positive difference to your learning experience. I particularly look forward to the release of the Finnish and French grammatical dictionaries so that I can continue to study without seeing the pained expression of my instructors.

My responsibilities in Linguru are as president and chief software architect. David and I designed the graphical user interface which you interact with when using the dictionary. I was then locked in a small room until I came back with a workable multi-threaded interface, integrated fault-tolerant zero maintenance database, stateless scalable network replication based on a distributed event model, and a sustainable and ethical way for Linguru to return a profit to investors. Meanwhile, David enjoyed getting married and finishing his Ph.D. But I'm not bitter. Really. I mean that.

BiographyI am Paul's cousin, the son of Paul's father's next youngest brother. I was born in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. I spent most of my life before college in Northern Virginia, where I distinguished myself as a student of Latin and I developed a taste for languages. I have traveled to France, Germany, Spain, and Thailand to study French, German, Spanish, Thai, Mon, and Sô (I only ever spoke so-so Sô). I have visited Wales twice to study Welsh, though I only did any serious studying on the second visit. Most of my language study has been independent: I had only had one semester each of French and German before I traveled to France and Germany. I like to study with a reference grammar, literature, a dictionary, and my thumb -- I hitchhike to practice speaking and listening. The first source of my interest in this project has been my preferred mode of language study.

The second source of my interest in developing Linguru was my experience getting a graduate degree in linguistics. I learned in Germany that I had been accepted with a fellowship to the linguistics department at the State University of New York at Buffalo. That's where I headed soon after arriving back in North America. After a couple years of classes, I needed a topic for a master's thesis, so I picked up some stories by Kate Roberts and counted her pronouns. I managed to turn my pronoun counting into a three-hundred-page thesis, Asseveration in Welsh. I studied how pronoun choice and the use of the formerly pronominal affirmative particles fe and mi are used in Welsh to indicate degrees of emphasis. Several papers, several years, and one doctoral dissertation after that I have emerged, newly Dr. Houghton, a semanticist and pragmaticist and sometime teacher of Welsh.

At the end of my long sojourn in Buffalo I no longer wanted to be in academia. Meanwhile, Paul was in Finland with his own studies and work. We had an extended conference over e-mail and, out of Paul's imagination, frustration, and knowledge of the open-source movement and my linguistic experiences and a prototype electronic Sanskrit dictionary, Linguru was born. Paul moved to Nashville. I moved to Nashville. (My wife, Paula, moved to Nashville.) At Linguru, I am the primary author of the web pages, write the linguistic portions of the software, draw pictures, and strategize with Paul. I write the bits that convert mynd into aeth and back again. I write the bits that try to figure out where you want to go when you click on a word. I maintain the search engine. I drew the flattering picture of myself and the less flattering picture of Paul.1 We have been laboring in penury. I hope you enjoy the product of our labors.

ANALYSIS
Positives: Hard worker with impressive raw power...Excellent in-line blocker who uses his strength to wall off the defender as a trap blocker...Very fluid moving in reverse, showing the lateral agility to easily slide out to neutralize linebackers upfield...Has very quick hands and delivers a punishing punch coming out of his stance...Shows suddenness in his initial move-ments, staying low to the ground to take defenders off their feet...Takes proper cut-down angles in the short area...His low center of gravity, mental toughness and hand quickness could see him shift to center at the pro level.

Negatives: Waist-bender who appears very stiff in his upfield movements...His raw power in the weight room does not translate to the field...Limited area blocker who lacks balance at the point of attack...Gets rocked back a lot at the point of attack as he tends to stand upright too much after his initial move...Tries to get his hands inside to grab on and hold the defender, but he will over-extend and drop his head by doing this, knocking him off stride.

BirthSep 13, 1936Matku, Finland, Sep 15 in Obit1
Marriagecirca 1959
Death2018Cookeville, TN, USA
ObituaryApr 22, 2018Nashville - Maaret Koivula Houghton, age 81, passed away peacefully April 11, 2018, in the presence of family and caregivers at Vanderbilt University Hospital.

Her memorial service is to be June 29, 2018, allowing travel time for family members in her native Finland.

She was born September 15, 1936 near Matku in the beautiful countryside of southern Finland, to the late Paavali and Helen Koivula. Maaret and her loving husband, James Richard "Dick" Houghton, were married 57 years and marked their most recent anniversary with family and with their fellow Quaker members of the Friends Meeting of Nashville. Dick's role as a tenured Tennessee Tech faculty member and as a mechanical engineer led to their lengthy residence in Cookeville, Tenn., as well as to six memorable years living and working in Sierra Leone and Kenya.

Her birth name was Sine Terttu Maaret Koivula. She is survived by her husband, Dick; their daughter, June Houghton Kingsbury; their son, Paul Houghton (Inkeri); by their grandchildren, Ben Kingsbury, Sine Houghton and Jenna Houghton; and, by nieces and nephews in the U.S. and Europe.

She is preceded in death by her parents, by her brother Kaarle Koivula, and by her sister Eira Tulita Caseiro. Born to her parents in a sauna in rural Finland, as a teenager she moved with her family to Washington, D.C. She later attended Quaker-founded Guilford College in Greenboro, N.C., and in 1979 earned a degree as a Registered Nurse at the then-University of Tennessee-Nashville. She served as a Nurse for about 15 years in Cookeville, Tenn.

In addition to family and friends, her great passions were cultivating and nourishing plants, protecting animals and conserving resources and the environment through recycling and other means.

Her family suggests that in lieu of flowers, donations be offered to support such work and to the Friends Meeting of Nashville. Her memorial service will be held Friday, June 29th, beginning at 2:00 p.m. CT, at First Unitarian Universalist Church of Nashville, 1808 Woodmont Blvd., Nashville 37215.
