ObituaryOct 13, 1993Rocky Mountain News (CO) - October 13, 1993 Deceased Name: 'THIRSTY' HOUGHTON FOUGHT WARS, RAISED KIDS
Sometimes Thurston "Thirsty" Temple Houghton's children referred to him as the Colonel - sometimes out of respect, sometimes to remind him he was behaving like one. Mr. Houghton, who died Sunday at 97, never let go of the colonel in him. "He had story upon story upon story" about the lessons learned in military service that began in 1916, when he joined the Colorado National Guard Artillery and fought on the Mexican border under Gen. John Pershing, according to his grandson.
"He talked about it to the end," said Edward Kingry of Lakewood, who was raised by Mr. Houghton and his wife, Velma, after Kingry's mother died in the mid-1950s.
Mr. Houghton was among the first 150,000 American soldiers sent overseas in World War I. He served in World War II, commanding an armored battalion in the southwest Pacific. Mr. Houghton, born May 7, 1896, in Brookston, Ind., moved to Denver in 1914 and graduated from Manual, then a trade school.
He married Velma E. Cowell in 1919. She died 16 years ago. Between the world wars, Mr. Houghton worked for Continental Oil Co. in Denver. He worked for the state treasurer's office for a total of 25 years. The Houghtons had three daughters, the first of whom died at birth. When Edward Kingry's mother died, Mr. Houghton took on the upbringing of her children with the vigor of a first-time father, coaching their football and baseball teams, Kingry said. Mr. Houghton's surviving daughter is Leota Bostrom of Littleton. In addition to Edward Kingry, Mr. Houghton is survived by four other grandchildren. Services will be at 11 a.m. today at the Moore Memorial Chapel. Burial will be in Fairmount Cemetery.
