A lifelong resident of New Boston, he served for many years as road agent and had been a trustee of the cemetery. He was a member of the board of Selectmen and was a town auditor.
He was employed by the state Department of Highways and had been propietor of Houghton's Garage.
Family members include his wife, Gladys F. Houghton, of New Boston; two daughters, Lois Carr, of reading, Mass., and Dianne DalPra, of Manchester; two grandsons; a sister, Bertha Brooks, of Newport and several nieces and nephews.⁷

New Boston - Arthur E. Houghton, 68, of Weare Road, died Monday afternoon at his home after a brief illness. He was a self employed carpenter.
He was born here, was educated in local schools and lived here all his life. He was a graduate of New Boston High School.
The family includes his wife, Mrs. Doris B. Houghton, of New Boston; four sons, Raymond A. Houghton, Arthur E. Houghton Jr., Charles L. Houghton and Walter H. Houghton, all of New Boston; two daughters, Mrs. Robert (Ann) Comire of Mont Vernon, Miss Alice Houghton of New Boston; four brothers, Lester Houghton, George Houghton and Roger Houghton, all of New Boston and Ralph Houghton of Bow; two sisters, Mrs. Ralph (Helen) Leach of Milford and Mrs. Judson (Bertha) Brooks of Claremont; 19 grandchildren; two great grandchildren; nieces, nephews and cousins.
Services will be held Thursday at 2 p. m. at the French and Rising Funceral Home, Goffstown with the Rev. William F. Hamel, pastor of the Congregational Church of Goffstown, officiating. Burial will be in the Meetinghouse Hill Cemetery, New Boston.⁷

Pittsburg, NH, USA, Funeral services for Roger L. Houghton, 74, a resident of Pittsburg for the past 16 years and formerly of New Boston, were held on Wednesday Aug. 28, at 2 p.m. from the Farham Memorial Chapel in Pittsburg.
Internment was in the Hollow Cemetery...Mr. Houghton passed away at the mary Hitchcock Hospital in Hanover on Saturday Aug 24. 1985 following a brief illness.
He was a native of New Boston and owned and operated a chicken farm for many years. He has been employed prior to his retirement at the Hitchner Manufacturing Co. in Milford. After moving to Pittsburg, he and his wife operated the Country Kitchen.
Members of the family include his wife, Mrs. Elizabeth Bose Houghton of Pittsburg; two sons, Ronald T. Houghton of Weare and L. John Houghton of Jefferson Meadows; two daughters, Mrs. nancy Plaistead of Alstead and Mrs. Betty Smith of Jefferson Meadows; 17 grandchildren; 2 great-grandchildren; two brothers, Lester Houghton of Pittsburg and George Houghton of New Boston; a sister, Mrs. Bertha Brooks of Newport.⁷
