ObituaryJan 16, 2012FORT FAIRFIELD - Antoria R. "Tory" Houghton, 96, wife of the late Thomas E. Houghton Jr., passed away Sunday morning, Jan. 15, 2012, at a Presque Isle nursing facility, after a lengthy illness. She was born March 28, 1915, in New Sweden, the daughter of Emil and Emelia (Sealander) Rosen. A graduate of Caribou High School and Aroostook State Normal School, Tory taught school for one year before attending the University of Maine, where she received a Bachelor of Science degree in home economics in 1939. On June 10, 1939, she married Thomas E. Houghton Jr. In addition to raising a family, she was a very supportive wife, assisting her husband in the family's potato growing business. This included providing meals and lodging to many truck drivers and business associates. Tory was a member of United Parish Church, Fort Fairfield; Fort Fairfield Philomathian Club, Beta Sigma Phi sorority and the 20-30 Club of United Parish Church. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed gardening. Tory will be remembered for her great love for her family, her thoughtfulness, care and concern for others, her gracious and generous hospitality, and her sensitivity to the feelings of others. She was a very devoted wife, mother and grandmother. Her greatest joy was receiving visits from her children and grandchildren and making treats for those grandchildren. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her husband of 64 years, Thomas E. Houghton Jr., Feb. 18, 2004; two sisters, Doris McCready and Warrena Richard; and one granddaughter, Amy Winston. She is survived by two daughters, Patricia Greene and her husband, George, of Wiscasset and Bonnie Winston of Brisbane, Australia; two sons, Thomas "Tim" Houghton III of Fort Fairfield and Wesley Chapel, Fla., and John Houghton and his wife, Margaret, of Fort Fairfield; one sister-in-law, Frances Whited of Caribou; five grandchildren, Susan Greene of Richmond, Bruce Houghton of Portland, Timberly Sweeney and her husband, Sean, of Tewksbury, Mass., Thomas Houghton IV and his wife, Jenny, of Lehigh Acres, Fla., and Ryan Houghton of Portland; three stepgrandchildren, Sara Khan and her husband, Shaun, of Swampscott, Mass., Matthew Cyr and his wife, Kelly, of New Gloucester and Emily Holder and her husband, Craig, of Mapleton; five great-grandchildren, Antoria and Timothy Sweeney, Grace Greene, Thomas Houghton V and Evan Houghton; five great-stepgrandchildren, Ava, Nolan and Caleb Holder, Reece Cyr and Maliq Khan; several nieces and nephews; and a very special cousin, Shirley Griffeth of Caribou. Tory's family would like to thank Presque Isle Nursing Home for the wonderful care she received and a special thank you to the staff of PEC Unit for their many years of love and care. In keeping with Tory's wishes, there will be no calling hours or service at this time, however a celebration of Tory's life will be conducted at a later date at Fort Fairfield United Parish Church, with interment afterward at Riverside Cemetery, Fort Fairfield, to be announced in a later edition of the Bangor Daily News. In lieu of flowers, those wishing to remember Mrs. Houghton in a special way may contribute in her memory to the United Parish Church Memorial Fund, care of Betty Kent-Conant, 18 Harding Ave., Fort Fairfield, ME 04742. Arrangements have been entrusted to Giberson-Dorsey Funeral Home, 144 Main St., Fort Fairfield.

Muriel E. ''Sippie'' Houghton, 75, of Dane Street died Sunday at Maine Medical Center in Portland after a brief illness.

She was born in Cambridge, Mass., a daughter of John and Evelyn Ayer Medina, attended schools in Waltham, Mass., and Chapel Hill Academy. She majored in home economics at the University of Maine, where she was a member of Delta Delta Delta Sorority.

On June 26, 1943, she married Jack Houghton and lived most of her married life in the St. John Valley of Aroostook County.

Mrs. Houghton lived in Seminole, Texas, and after her husband died moved to Kennebunk.

Surviving are three daughters, Nancy Oldershaw of Hampden, N.H., Judith Houghton of Arundel and Andrea Lewis of Middlesex, Vt; a brother, John Medina of Kennebunk; a sister, Nancy Nelson of Alton, N.H; and seven grandchildren.

A memorial service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Wednesday in South Congregational Church, Kennebunkport. The Rev. Charles Whiston will officiate. Spring burial will be in Arundel Cemetery, Kennebunkport. Arrangements are by Bibber Memorial Chapel.
