CLEVELAND. Feb. 19.-Mrs. Emily J. Duncan died at her home on Bridge st. yesterday at noon.
She was aged 82 years and had been a resident of this place for nearly 61 years. Mrs. Duncan is
survived by one son, Irvine Duncan of 125 West Fayette st., Syracuse, and a niece. Mrs. Abble
Whitney of this place.

10 o'clock, Rev. H. D. Holmes officiating. Mrs. Duncan has been a resident of this village for

has been an invalid for over thirty years. About three weeks ago she had a shock which hastened
death She is survived by one son, Irvine Duncan of Syracuse, and a niece, Mrs. Abbie Whitney of
this village.

Seth in the 1850 census lists himself as a Gold Smith, in the 1860 and 1870 census as a Jeweler, and in the 1880 does not list an occupation. In the 1850 and 1860 census, Irvine is living with them. It should be noted that in the 1860 census they are living next door to Joshua Duncan, 72 years old
born in Mass., and Martha Duncan, 70 years old born in Conn. In the 1880 census Seth stated that his father was born in Mass. and his mother was born in Conn.

"Here are the Duncan photos. They have a prime spot at the end of the westernmost driveway at
the edge of the cliff overlooking the lake. I tried to give you the sense of location as you go
through the beautiful wrought iron gate, down the grassy road and finally at their resting place.
You can just see the lake through the trees. Behind the large stone in the grass are two small
stones, "Mother" and "Father." We do not know if they are connected, but I tried to get them into
one of the shots, FYI."

Seth was a jeweler in the village of Constantia. He served in the village as the village president (1861, 1865-1866), assessor(1877), and trustee.2

From "The History of Medina Co. and Ohio" 1881-
ISAAC BLAIR, retired farmer; P.O. Chatham; is one of the early settlers of this township andwas born Feb. 4, 1805, in Madison Township, Madison Co., N.Y. His parents, David and Eunice Blair, were natives of Massachusetts, and had a family of six children, three of each sex, Isaac
being the oldest son; three are now living - Arba, who now resides on the homestead in New York; Freeman, in Michigan; and our worthy subject, who was reared to farm work, which he has ever since followed. In starting in life, he had no assistance from his father. He worked out by
the mouth for several years and saved some means, with which he intended to purchase some wild land in the West. Jan. 1, 1829, he was united in marriage to Louisa Phinney, who was born in Oneida Co., N.Y; daughter of Benjamin Phinney, whose wife was a Yeoman. By this wife,
two children were born to Mr. Blair - Hamilton M. and Louisa E; the former a resident of Cuyahoga Co., this State, and the latter now in Clayton Co., Iowa, the wife of Charles S. Blair. In 1834, Mr. Blair came West to this county, and purchased 70 acres of unimproved land, at $4 per
acre. He erected a log cabin on the same, and returned to New York to bring his family out, but, in consequence of death of his wife, his plans were entirely changed. He sent his brother out, who occupied the premises until 1837, when he moved out, bringing with him his present wife,
who is Rebecca Houghton, a native of Worcester, N.Y. , and was born Jan. 11, 1804; a daughter of Ebenezer and Margery (Bigelow) Houghton. Ebenezer was a son of Ebenezer. The father of Margery was named Joshua. The land that Mr. Blair first located and cleared up was that now
owned by Mr. William Moody, which was afterward added to until it comprised 125 1/2 acres. By his last marriage, there have been two children - Harriet M., now the wife of N.H. Wyatt, in Clyde; and Lewis H., who lost his life while in Washington, D. C., where he was serving out his
term of enlistment as a member of Co. C, 79th O.N.G. Mr. and Mrs. Blair now reside on land adjoining his first purchase, having a good home, and are enjoying the reward of their hard labor in peace and happiness, having been esteemed citizens of the community for over forty-three

Mrs. Laura Houghton Phinney
Mrs. Laura Houghton Phinney was born in Otsego county, New York, April 15, 1809. She
was married to Lorenzo Phinney October 20, 1831. By this marriage there were born to them two
sons and one daughter, all of whom are still living. Mr. and Mrs. Phinney removed from the state
of New York to Ohio in 1856 and settled on a farm near the center of Lafayette, Medina county,
where they resided up to the time of Mr. Phinney's death, which occurred November 4, 1881.
Soon after that occurrence Mrs. Phinney, in company with her daughter Emily, removed to
York township, where she has since resided up to the time of her death, which occurred February
23, 1892. Had she lived till the fifteenth day of April, next, she would have reached the ripe age
of 83 years.
Mrs. Phinney when about 15 years of age professed religion and identified herself with the
people of God. On coming to Ohio she united with the Congregational church of Lafayette and on
removing to York, changed her membership to the Congregational church of that place. In both of
these churches she lived an honored and faithful member. Mrs. Phinney was a faithful wife, a
good mother, a kind neighbor and an earnest Christian lady.
"Rest thee, mother, rest forever.
Thou hast borne life's burden long.
Now thy crown and harp receiving
Swell the glad eternal song.
"But on earth there's sound of mourning.
Many are the hearts that mourn
And an earthly home is vacant.
With that loving presence gone.
"Mother, mother, may we join thee.
When these sad farewells are o'er
Meet us at the radiant threshold
On that bright eternal shore."
In a column on York written by Blackbird in the Medina County Gazette
Mrs. Laura Phinney died at the home of her daughter, Mrs. G. C. Pearson, on Tuesday morning.
She suffered a stroke of paralysis a few weeks ago, from which she never recovered. She was 82
years of age. The funeral will be held Thursday forenoon, and the remains will be taken to
Lafayette for burial.
Laura and Rebecca, sisters, give different locations for their births. As it turns out Maryland
Township was formed out of Worcester in 1808. Rebecca was born in 1804 and Laura in 1809, thus the difference.2

Lorenzo provided a biography for the book "History of Medina Co." 1881 in which he spells his
mother's maiden name as Yeoman. In Sept. 2000, I made contact with Ann Hayes who is in this
line, and her family has always spelled it Yeomans. I quote, "Name in CT records spelled
Yeomans or occasionally Yeamans. Yeomans, my mother's maiden name. It goes : Ann(Mabel,
Rector, Daniel, Andrew,Daniel of Stonington)

L. D. PHINNEY, retired farmer; P. O. Whittlesey; is a native of Connecticut, born September 7,
1807, the youngest child of his parents, who were Benjamin and Hannah (Yeoman) Phinney; he
was born about the year 1876(typo), his wife one year later. To them were born nine children,
eight of the number attained to man's estate. The family were all born in Connecticut, but
removed to Oneida Co., N. Y., when L. D. was a lad of tender age. His boyhood days were spent
at home, and at tending the common district school, which he did not appreciate as he might have
done, consequently his education was not as thorough and comprehensive as his opportunities
afforded; he continued at the parental home until he attained his 4 and 20 years. During this time
he was engaged on the farm, assisting his father in the duties of the farm. Oct. 20, 1831, he was
married to his present companion, whose place of nativity was Maryland Township, Otsego Co.,
N.Y., time of birth April 15, 1809; her parents were Ebenezer and Margery (Bigelow) Houghton;
to them were born eleven children, but five lived to be grown. After the marriage of Mr. And
Mrs. Phinney, they remained on the farm of his father until 1856, when he emigrated to this State,
settling at La Fayette Center, where he has since been a constant resident. Their marriage has
been crowned by the birth of three children, whose names are Loring H., Eben H. and Emily J.
Mr. Phinney is now the only surviving member of the Phinney family. Mrs. Phinney has two
sisters, Emily, Mrs. Seth P. Duncan, in Oswego, N.Y., and Rebecca, Mrs. Isaac Blair, of this
township; her parents died in this township, her father in 1857, mother in 1860. They were both
members of the Congregational Church, of which Mrs. Phinney has been a member since 16
years of age. Mr. Phinney has been successful since his advent to this place - coming here with
but $50 in money, he has acquired his present home, and 136 acres of land; having sold off a
portion, has now 104 acres, and is enjoying the comforts of his home in the eve of his life,
surrounded by his wife and children. Mr. Phinney has always lived a quit life, taking but little
interest in political matters, living in the main, a quiet and unostentatious life; he is a member of
the Congregational Church, and a respected member of the community. Sent one son, Eben H.,
to defend our nation's honor, he serving as a member in Company "B," 42d O.V.I., for three
years, and returned home to his parents safe and sound, from the changing vicissitudes of civil
strife. (His son, Loring served in the Ohio National Guard, "C" Company, 79th Battalion. Loring
) was married Oct. 22, 1865, to Caroline Jacobs, adopted daughter of John Jacobs; has two
children, Elsie D. and Ervine L.
I believe that due to a editing error that the type in parentheses might have been omitted. Eben
was not married in 1880* and it was Loring who married Caroline Jacobs.

The following obituary is pasted into a scrap book from Deansboro, Oneida Co., NY. It has been
kept in Patti Haggerty's family through the years. In 2004 Patti contacted Dave Holcomb and
shared the pages that had Phinney information. It is unknown at this point what connection if any
her relatives have with the Phinney's. Her family names are Fairbank, Small, Husted, Page, and

Loren H. Phinney
L. H. Phinney died at his home in Lafayette at 11 oclock last Sunday morning, Apr. 4, age 81
years, 8 months and 11 days. Death was due to apoplexy. Mr. Phinney had always(at this point

Loren Hewitt Phinney was born in Marshall township, Onieda county, New York State, on July
23, 1833, on his father's farm. Mr. Phinney was the son of Lorenzo and Laura Houghton Phinney,
and the eldest of three children. The other two children survive Mr. Phinney and are: E. H.
Phinney and Mrs. Emily Pearson both of York ( there appears more had been cut off)

Loren H. Phinney
L. H. Phinney died at his home in Lafayette at 11 o'clock last Sunday morning, Apr. 4, aged 81
years, 8 months, and 11 days. Death was due to apoplexy. Mr. Phinney had always enjoyed
rugged health, and aside from a slight but almost unnoticeable failing natural to declining years,
his last years witnessed no serious sickness until his fatal illness which was so brief as to be
almost instantaneous. The funeral was held at his late home at 10:30 a.m., Wednesday, Apr. 7,
conducted by Rev. H. Samuel Fritsch of Medina; interment was made in Spring Grove cemetery.
Loren Hewitt Phinney was born in Marshall township, Oneida county, New York State, on
July 23, 1833, on his father's farm. Mr. Phinney was the son of Lorenzo and Laura Houghton
Phinney, and the eldest of three children. The other two children survive Mr. Phinney and are; E.
H. Phinney and Mrs. Emily Pearson both of York.
In November, 1856, when Loren Phinney was 23 years old, his father moved his family to
Lafayette township, Medina county O., settling on the farm which was long afterwards known as
the old Phinney farm, but now known as the David Lance farm. Here young Mr. Phinney worked
on the farm for his father until the time of his marriage.
On Oct. 22, 1865, Mr. Phinney married Caroline Jacobs who survives him. For the next
several years Mr. and Mrs. Phinney lived on the old farm with his parents, and also for a time on
what is now Wm. Maytham's farm on Short street. In 1872 they bought their present farm on the
Chatham road which continued to be his home from then until his death.
Two children were born to Mr. and Mrs. Phinney; one daughter, Mrs. Elsie Shaw of
Cleveland; and the son, Irvine L., who lives on the farm. Mr. Phinney is also survived by three
grandchildren.
During Rev. Enoch F. Baird's pastorate, in February, 1888, Mr. Phinney united with the
Congregational church at Lafayette Center and was a conscientious member until his death. But
with his religion as with all of his principles of manhood it was not his habit of life to loudly
proclaim his beliefs. He chose rather to live his life day by day as best he knew how and at his
death it stands as a fitting monument to him. Mr. Phinney tended strictly to his own business. He
was an honest and upright citizen. His highest pride was in his family to which he was a kind and
dutiful husband and father. His friends and kin together mourn their loss, itself irreparable, but
before his own hearthstone his deeds, his thoughtfulness have left indelible a sweet and cherished
memory.
The following is from the "Atlas and Directory of Medina County, Ohio", by the American Atlas
Company, 1897.
Phinney, L. H., is one of the pioneers of Lafayette township, having come there with his parents
in the fall of 1856. He owns a fine farm of ninety acres, has a good home and is recognized as one
of the leading citizens of his locality. He was born in Oneida county, N.Y., July 23, 1833. His
education is the best afforded by the common schools. His wife, who was Miss Caroline Row,
was born August 7, 1845, in Vevay, Switzerland county, Ind., and was married to our subject in
1865. Two children have been born to them, both of whom are living. Mr. Phinney belongs to the
Congregational church and Mrs. Phinney to the Baptist, and both are active church workers. Mr.
P's portrait appears in this work upon the page of Lafayette citizens. They are one of the most
prosperous and enterprising families of their township.

One of Lafayette's oldest citizens and one of the old landmarks of this community, passed
away in the very sudden death of L. H. Phinney at his home last Sunday morning. Mr. Phinney
would have been 82 years old had he lived until July, and, naturally as a result of advancing
years, was steadily growing a little more decrepit, but at no time in the last few years previous to
his death had he suffered from any of the serious infirmities that so commonly attend old age. On
Sunday morning he had eaten his usual hearty breakfast and after having been out doors a little
time had lain down on the sofa according to his custom. To all appearances he was as well as
common. Two hours later some of the family hearing him make a peculiar noise went into the
room and found him in the clutches of death. The end came in just a few minutes. Dr. Gleason,
who was called, pronounced the cause of death apoplexy. Mr. Phinney had lived in Lafayette
since 1856, coming to Ohio from New York State. Had not death intervened Mr. and Mrs.
Phinney would have celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary in October. Besides his wife and
son Ervin, who lives on the farm, and daughter, Mrs. Frank Shaw of Cleveland, Mr. Phinney has
living a brother, E. H. , and sister, Mrs. Emily Pearson, both of York. The funeral will be held
Wednesday, Apr. 7, at 10 oclock, sun time, at the house conducted by Rev. H. Samuel Fritsch.
Burial in Spring Grove.
Lewis H. Blair, according to the "History of Medina County and Ohio" published in 1881, lost
his life while in Washington, D.C., where he was serving out his term of enlistment as a member
of Co. C, 79th Ohio National Guard. It should be noted that his cousin, Loren H. Phinney served
in the same Company. Loren would give his son the middle name Lewis.
The following is a more accurate account.
On July 20, 1863, Loring volunteered and joined the Seventy-ninth Battalion, C Company of the
Ohio National Guard. He volunteered to serve five years. This Company was made up of eightyfive
volunteers from Lafayette Township and surrounding areas. It included two of Loring's
cousins, Hamilton M. Blair and Lewis H. Blair. This was a State Militia for the protection of
Ohio. On August 15, 1863, the unit elected Oscar P. Phillips as its Captain. Not much is known
of the groups' work until May of 1864, when the 79th Battalion was mustered into U.S. Service as
part of the 166th Regiment of the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. The following is taken from "A
History of The State of Ohio," Vol. IV. (The Civil War Era) page 428.
"Believing that the war could be ended by the close of the summer of 1864, if enough men could
be put into the field, it was proposed at a meeting of northwestern state governors at Washington
that each state supply a quota of men for one hundred days, to be used chiefly for garrison or
guard duty, thus releasing regulars for field service. The governors agreed, the President accepted
the plan and the call went forth. Brough (then governor of Ohio), through his efficient Adjutant-
General, Benjamin R. Cowen, summoned the newly organized National Guard for this work. The
driving energy of the governor put 35,982 men into federal service within sixteen days. No other
state was so prompt. Only one company refused to serve, and it was dishonorably dismissed from
the National Guard. The hundred days' men performed a useful service, mostly behind the lines,
but their contribution did not enable the government to bring the war to an end by autumn, as
Brough had hoped. However, he had done his part."
The 166th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry was organized at Camp Cleveland, Ohio, May 13
and 15, 1864, to serve one hundred days. It was composed of the Fifty-ninth Battalion, Ohio
National Guard, from Holmes County; Sixty-third Regiment, Ohio National Guard, from Huron
County; Seventy-ninth Battalion, Ohio National Guard, from Medina County; and one company
of the Fifty-second Battalion, Ohio National Guard, from Wayne County. Twenty-seven out of
eighty-five members of Company C, Seventy-ninth Battalion, Ohio National Guard went into
Company D, 166th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry. Fifty-eight members did not sign up for
the "Hundred Days." Loring and his cousin, Hamilton Blair, did not sign up, however, his cousin
Lewis Blair (Hamilton's half brother) did. On June 2, 1864, Lewis became the first member of
the 166th Regiment Ohio Volunteer Infantry to die. In all, forty members would die in the war.
Out of the twenty-seven members that enlisted for the "Hundred Days," from Lafayette, three
would die while serving: Lewis, Jacob A. Miller, and Levi Miller.

On May 1, 1866, Loring received his Honorable Discharge, signed by Benjamin R. Cowen. It
was given by Order of Governor Jacob D. Cox less than three years after he originally signed up.
Interesting point - there is a Loring Hewett in the same town as the Phinneys in the 1840 census.

E. H. Phinney
Ebenezer Houghton Phinney was born in Oneida County, state of New York, on Oct. 29, 1835.
His father's family moved to Medina County when he was 21 years of age. He enlisted on Nov.
17, 1861, as a private of Captain Thos. Hutchison's Company K. 42nd regiment, Ohio Volunteer
infantry in the Civil War. He served three years and was honorably discharged Dec. 2, 1864.
Ebenezer Phinney was united in marriage to Mary Allen, Jan. 3, 1883, to which union was born
an only daughter, Laura Deette Phinney. His wife preceded him in death 37 years ago. Later he
was united in marriage to Almira E. Wager, who preceded him in death 18 years ago. There is
one grandchild, Mary Genevieve Seeley. He is the last of the family.
Mr. Phinney was an active member of the York Congregational church for 25 years. He leaves to
mourn his loss his only child, Laura Deette Seeley, and husband, Jess Seeley, one grandchild,
Elvia Seeley, a sister-in-law, Mrs. Caroline Phinney, of Cleveland, and one niece, Mrs. Frank
Shaw, two great-nieces and one great-nephew. (obit in Grandma Shaw's scrapbook marked in
pencil as 1929)
His grave marker states "Co. B 42 OVI" however his obit states he was in "Thos. Hutchison's
Company K, 42nd regiment, Ohio Volunteer infantry" during the Civil War. His Civil War
Pension Index lists both.

Mrs. Emily Pearson
After a brief illness of only two weeks, Mrs. Emily J. Phinney Pearson died Feb. 28,
1916, at her home in Mallet Creek, O., as the result of a shock received Feb. 14. The
deceased was born Oct. 14, 1839, in Marshall, Oneida county, N. Y., and moved with
her people to Lafayette, Medina county, O., when she was about 16 years of age. In
the early '80s she and her mother moved to Mallet Creek. In the year 1884 she
married C. G. Pearson, a resident of Mallet Creek, with whom she lived until his
death, which occured in the year 1902.
Mrs. Pearson early in life united with the Congregational church and was consistent
and faithful member until her death. There is left to mourn her loss, one brother, Eben
Phinney of Mallet Creek, and numerous relatives and friends.
The funeral services were held at the home, March 1, Rev. W. O. Town officiating,
assisted by Rev. Mr. Hooper. After the service the body was interred in Mallet Creek

David F. “Dave” Denning, 62, of Salina, died Tuesday, Dec. 18, 2012. He was born Dec. 15, 1950, in Charleston, W.Va., the son of William Kenneth and Bettie (Maloney) Denning.
He served with the United States Army in the Vietnam War. For more than 20 years, he worked as a master plumber for USD 305, Salina. He retired in November of 2012.
He was a life member of GWTA, Harley Owners Group, Salina Masonic Lodge No. 60 and the National AMBUCS. He was a member of the Golden Eagles Motorcycle Club and served as president, vice president and Mr. AMBUC for the Red Baron AMBUCS club.
He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant brother, Keith Denning.
Survivors include his wife, Nancy Almon Denning; two sons, James Denning and wife Rhian, of Wichita, and Jerry Peters and wife LeeAnn, of Gypsum; one daughter, Gail Burk and husband Ted, of Weatherford, Texas; one brother, Phillip Denning and wife Patricia, of Perry, Ga; five grandchildren, Holden Denning, Callie Peters, Cade Peters, Kayla Matt, and Nick Matt and wife Mandy; one great-grandchild, Acelynn Matt; and numerous nieces and nephews.
Burial will follow in Gypsum Hill Cemetery, Salina.
