Washington Twp, NY, USA, Bryant Haughton: "The territory comprising the Township of Washington was originally included in Port Lawrence Township. On June 1 1840, the county commissioners issued an order for the erection of a new township, to be called Washington. Pursuant to an order of the board of county commissioners (of Washington township, Lucas County, Ohio), the first township election was held on June 27, 1840, at the house of Benjamin Mallett, at which time and place the following officers were chosen: Alvin Evans, Lyman Haughton and John Lambert, trustees; Sanford L. Collins, clerk; John Knaggs, treasurer; James Brown and Henry Mersereau, overseers of the poor; Charles Evans, William Wilkinson and Erastus Williams, fence viewers; Thomas Wilkinson, constable. The justices of the peace in Port Lawrence Township continued to serve until 1845, when Lyman Haughton and Horace Thacker were elected. Haughton Cemetery: Margaret Lunt: "Miss Alice Haughton of San Mateo, California, recently wrote the writer that Haughton Cemetery started first as a private burial ground by the six Haughton brothers, Lyman, Stephen, Marvin, Cyrus, John and William. The first four came to the area during the winter of 1833-1834 from Monroe County, New York. They settled on large tracks of Government land along what then became known as Haughton Street, but now is known as Central Avenue. A few years later two other brothers, John and William, came west and settled in the same area."

"HDQRS. TWENTY-FIFTH REGT. OHIO VET. VOL. INFTY.,
Boyd's Landing, S.C., December 3, 1864.
CAPTAIN: I have the honor to make the following report of the part taken by my regiment in the action of November 30, 1864: About 9 a.m. we left the White Church, the One hundred and twenty-seventh New York in advance, taking the road toward Grahamville; had moved but a short distance when the enemy opened with a battery in front. I formed my regiment on the right and left of the road in line of battle, to support the advance of the One hundred and twenty-seventh New York. Moved forward until the advance was checked and the long grass in front [fired] by the enemy. My regiment then moved forward--the right wing farther to the right and the left wing farther to the left to avoid the burning grass---and met a division of the enemy on our right; the rebels soon fell back. I then moved to the road and advanced by the flank until their batteries opened from a second position; I then formed the right of a second line on the right of the road. Moved steadily forward by the right of companies until the first line---composed of the Thirty-second U.S. Colored Troops and a part or all of the One hundred and forty-fourth New York--was fired upon with musketry. This caused the first line to waver, and the Thirty-second fell back in considerable confusion. I immediately formed line of battle, and charging through the Thirty-second and a portion of the right of the One aughton served in the Civil War as Colonel, 25th Ohio Infantry. On March 13, 1965 he was appointed Brevet Brigadier General, USV.hundred and forty-fourth New York, we drove the enemy from the cross-road in confusion, without, However, doing him much damage, as the wood and brush were so thick that we could not see him when within fifteen or twenty yards, and I did not venture to fire for fear some of our men might be in front. Unexpectedly we came out on the cross-roads, where I rapidly formed my men, the Thirty-second arriving and forming on our right, and a portion of the One hundred and forty-fourth New York on our left; there was no firing in our front, but I could still hear firing to the left. Thinking I had gained an advantage over the enemy, was anxious to profit by it. I immediately sent an officer with some men to learn his position and see if his flank could be pressed. Receiving a favorable answer, I at once made a half change of front on my left company and moved forward into the woods about 80 or 100 yards, where we met a strong line of rebels; here a severe fight took place. We held our line till our ammunition was completely exhausted, even stripping our dead and wounded of the contents of their cartridge-boxes and borrowing of the Thirty-second U.S. Colored Troops, which rather tardily came up on our right, but did not swing far enough to support me sufficiently to warrant my making another charge, as the fire was far more severe on my left and center than on my right. Even had I been supplied with ammunition, I consider that it would have been imprudent to remain longer, as I found during the engagement that my immediate left was entirely unsupported. Under these circumstances, I thought it best to retire; and notifying Colonel Baird of my intention, I about-faced my regiment and moved slowly back to the cross-road, there receiving ammunition. The enemy showed little disposition to advance, and made no attack on our line while there. Soon after dark I received orders to fall back. I hereby append a list of the casualties in my regiment during the whole action, all of which, with one exception, occurred in making the charge and in our advanced position; those marked wounded and missing are known to have been wounded.

Memorial of Col. Nat Haughton (from the Toledo Blade)

Colonel Nathaniel Haughton, founder of the Haughton Machine and Foundry Company, ex-soldier and well known politician, died at St. Vincent's hospital, January 30th, 1899 of Pneumonia. He was 65 years of age and leaves a family of a wife and five children.
The first illness of Colonel Haughton was announced a week ago. He was suffering at that time from the effects of a severe fall on an icy pavement. Later he was taken to the hospital, having developed pneumonia, and died this morning. The funeral will take place on Thursday from his residence at the corner of Missouri street and Collingwood avenue.
Colonel Haughton was probably one of the best known men in Toledo, having lived in the city all his life. He was born on a farm in Washington Township, located on what is now Central avenue, on February 12th, 1834. At the age of 16 years he joined one of the first overland expeditions to California in search of gold. He prospected in the west for four years, and then returned to Toledo. After a short
residence here he went to Ypsilanti, where he took a course at college, and returning again to this city, entered the grocery and dry goods business at the corner of St. Clair and Monroe streets. He was successful in business and conducted the store until the breaking out of the civil war, when he enlisted in Company K, of the Twenty-fifth O.V.I. He was elected first lieutenant of the company and served
throughout the war, being mustered out as colonel of the regiment, and breveted brigadier general. The regiment was mustered out on June 18, 1866, and for some time after the close of the war was stationed at Charleston on garrison duty. He was at the battle of Chancellorsville, Body's Ford, the capture of Charleston, and was severely wounded at the battle of Gettysburg. After being mustered out, Colonel Haughton returned to Toledo where he entered the foundry and machine business, the firm being Haughton & Kniesser. About three years ago the firm was reorganized as the Haughton Foundry and Machine Company, and Colonel Haughton retired from the business. He has been connected with the waterworks department as inspector, and retired from that position at the first of the year.
In politics, Colonel Haughton has always been quite prominent. He was a staunch Republican, and active in party affairs. He has never held office, and was only once a candidate, that time for the position of county treasurer. In the days of the old-time torchlight processions, Colonel Haughton was the moving spirit in the parades and always took charge of the marchers. He was well known in the
Grand Army circles, and was a member of Toledo Post, holding the office of junior vice commander. He was also a member of the Union Veterans' Union. The news of his death will come as a shock to many of his old comrades, few of whom realized that his
sickness was of such a serious nature. His death will be mourned by many who knew him as the kind, whole-souled old gentleman who always had a kind word and pleasant smile for his acquaintances. Elevatorpedia: Haughton Elevator Company was a historic American elevator company from Toledo, OH. The history of Haughton Elevator Co. started out in 1867 when Nathaniel Haughton, a former brigadier general, purchased an interest from Toledo Steam Engine Works, a small local foundry and machine shop founded by Cooke, Kneisser and Groff. At some time, Mr. Haughton took interest in the company by buying a part of the company, and renamed the company into "Haughton and Kneisser" in 1868. In 1890, he bought out the last remaining partner of the company and renamed it "N. Haughton Foundry and Machine Company". However, the company changed name again in 1897 to "Haughton Elevator and Machine Co.", as the company began focusing on the manufacturing of elevators.

Haughton invented the solid automatic door in 1924. In 1936, under Mr. George L. McKesson's management, the company officially changed name to "Haughton Elevator Company". Three years later, Haughton began producing escalators which, at that time, were known as moving stairs.

In September 1957, Haughton purchased Elevator Maintenance Company (EMCO), a Californian company based in Los Angeles. Two months later,Toledo Scale Corporation bought Haughton and became the corporate's division. In 1965, Haughton bought Peelle's escalator division. On December 29, 1967, Haughton was sold to Reliance Electric Company, a company based in Cleveland, Ohio. Haughton then became a division of Reliance.

The 1970s saw the company's growth. Haughton bought Elevator Sales and Service Company from Miami, Florida in September 1976, which was Haughton's division. In April 1978, Haughton bought Texas-based Associated Elevator Company.

Haughton was bought out on April 27, 1979 by Schindler Holdings Ltd. Haughton was then known as Schindler Haughton until 1985 when they dropped "Haughton" from the name and became Schindler Elevator Corporation. An interesting thing to know was that before Schindler acquired the company, Kone had attempt to purchase Haughton in 1978. Eventually it never happened, as Schindler made a bold move to acquire Haughton and instead, Kone acquired the New York-based Armor in 1981.
Factory

Haughton's factory was first located in Huron Street, close to downtown Toledo, Ohio. It was operational until 1950 when a new factory was built on the Anthony Wayne trail across the Toledo Zoo. After the southern part of the Anthony Wayne Trail factory was demolished, the Toledo Zoo expanded across the street. At the Toledo Zoo, where the Polar Bears are right now was where Haughton's president's office was located. In 2008, the northern part of the Anthony Wayne Trail factory was demolished. There is an unknown warehouse that is still near the zoo that could have been part of the factory.

Schindler Elevator Corporation headquartered in Toledo, Ohio and the former Independent Service Division (ISD) Companies of Westinghouse Elevator Company. The former Westinghouse Elevator Company. Morristown. New Jersey, became known as Schindler Elevator Corporation, with Millar being division of Schindler. Both
Millar and Schindler are part of the Schindler Group, the World's second largest elevator manufacturer, based in Ebikon-Lucerne, Switzerland.

Schindler Elevator Corporation is the American division of Schindler Group, and traces its origins back to 1869 with the establishment of Haughton Elevator Company. Mr. Haughton was married in Fulton county, Ohio, November 15, 1868, to Mary S., daughter of Stephen and Huldah (Smith) Haughton, Settlers in Lucas county in 1833. Mary S. was born in New York State, January 6, 1829. Mr. Haughton resides in Washington township; is the owner of a farm and sawmill. Address, Wagon Works, Lucas County, Ohio.⁴
