Biography

Shirley Cooper: "When Bryce was eleven years old, his parents moved to Hallowell, Maine. He began to work for a living by wheeling chalk at the whiting mill. Later, he learned the trade of making sashes, doors, and blinds. He was converted at the age of thirteen and felt the call to preach, but thought he would prefer the profession of law. He studied at the Eaton School in Norridgewock, Maine, and subsequently fitted for college at the Nichols Latin School in Lewiston. He spent two years at Bates College. While in school, the call to preach became irresistib le and he immediately began preaching. During his college years he supplied the East Bowdoinham Free Baptist Church. Bryce left college in 1875 and became the pastor of the Second Free Baptist Church in Brunswick, Maine. His health failed, and in January 1883, he settled on a small farm, and became pastor of the First Free Will Baptist Church in Brunswick. He supplied the pulpit at North Freeport and Orr's Island. In April, 1887, he became pastor of the Lisbon Falls Church. His next church was the Corliss St. Church in Bath, Maine."²

Cooper: He served 52 1/2 years, mostly in the North Iowa Methodist Conference. His length of service was a record in the conference. He began his career in the ministry in the East Maine conference in 1893. In his sophomore year at Bowdoin College in Maine, he preached his first sermon. He spent eleven years in the East Maine Conference, then transferred from Waldoboro, Maine to Geddes, South Dakota. He spent seven years in South Dakota. He was transferred from Miller, S. D., to the Des Moines, Iowa Conference in 1911. He was at Scranton, Ia. for three years, Greenfield, Ia., for four years, later at Epworth church in Des Moines, Ia. During World War I, he was assigned to the intelligence department. He served in pastorages at Logan, Ia., Osceola, Ia., then Wesley Church in Sioux City, Ia., then to St. James Church in Morningside, Sioux City, Iowa.
