HOUGHTON, Rita J. Age 74, of Swartz Creek, died Monday, October 27, 1997 at McLaren Regional Medical Center. Funeral service will be held 11AM Thursday, October 30, 1997 at Sharp Funeral Homes, Miller Road Chapel, 8138 Miller Rd., Swartz Creek, Rev. Dan Caven officiating. Interment in Fairview Cemetery, Linden. Visitation will be held at the funeral home 2-5 and 7-9PM Wednesday. Those desiring may make contributions to the Boy Scouts of America, Tall Pine Council or the Girl Scouts of America, Fairwinds Council. Mrs. Houghton was born June 25, 1923 in Flint, the daughter of Bradley R. and Hazel M. (Atwell) Miller. She resided in Swartz Creek most of her life. She married Robert W. Houghton on July 20, 1946 in Rankin. She was a graduate of Mott Community College and received her Master's Degree from Eastern Michigan University. She was an elementary school teacher at Brownell for 12 years, retiring in 1979. She was a past member of Swartz Creek United Methodist Church. She was very active in the Girl Scouts for 35 years and had been a Cub Scout and 4H Leader for many years. She also helped her husband on their strawberry farm. Surviving are: husband, Robert; 4 children, Nina and Roger Nelson of Dansville, MI, Lawrence and Robin Houghton of Kalamazoo, Bradley and Jean Houghton of Swartz Creek, Terry and Jim Reed of Waverly, Iowa; 13 grandchildren; 4 great-grandchildren; brother, Bradley Miller Jr. of Grand Blanc. She was preceded in death by her parents.

Nelson, Nina 12/27/1946 - 2/1/2018 Dansville Nina Marie Houghton Nelson, 71 of Dansville, MI (McAllen, TX) met Jesus on Thursday, February 1, 2018 in McAllen, TX due to complications after surgery. Nina was born on December 27, 1946 to Robert and Rita Houghton in Flint, Michigan. She was the eldest of her four siblings Larry (Robin) Houghton, Brad (Jean) Houghton, and Terry (Jim) Reed. She married Roger S Nelson on August 23, 1969, they raised three children Sarah (Jack) Bohne', Dolly (Mark) Benjamin, Ben (Samantha) Nelson. Nina is survived by her husband, children, and eight grandchildren (Sandra, Seth, Isaac, Hailee, Kaitlynn, Keegan, Jenna and Shane). Her Aunt Maude Bourassa, her siblings, and many cousins, nieces and nephews. Celebration of Nina's life will be held on Saturday, February 10, 2018 at the Williamston Free Methodist Church in Williamston, Michigan at 11am with lunch to follow. Visitation Friday, February 9, 2018 from 5-8pm and Saturday morning from 9-11am. Flowers can be sent to the church, donations in Nina Nelson's name can be made to the Lansing City Rescue Mission (Lansing, MI), the Red Cross, and the American Cancer Society.
