Biography

Extensive information on PP & Mary Ann Houghton was printed in the "Portrait and Biographical Album" of Lake County. It states how her father died when she was 10, spending most of her childhood in Woodstock, Vermont, with her grandparents. She married PP when she was 17, on 10-14-1832. They had 8 children. They came to Lake County, Il in 1836 (then part of Cook County), staking a claim of 160 acres. The story tells of them moving west with all of their possession sin a 2-horse wagon. They moved into their log cabin (which PP had come out west to build earlier). The story also tells of how PP cast his first vote for James Madison, being a Whig, then joined the Republican party. This is also where it tells of Mary Ann keeping a diary and scrapbooks, which "would will be read with interest by her children when she is sleeping beneath the sod".^6,4
