Lifelong Resident of Cass City Area Dies

Mrs. Harriet Dodge, 74, widow of Joseph Dodge and lifelong resident of this vicinity, died early Monday in her home on W. Main Street, following a lengthy illness.

Funeral services were held Wednesday at 2 p.m. in the Douglas Funeral Home, Rev. F. W. Porter of the Methodist Church, where she was a devoted member, officiated and burial was in Elkland Cemetery.

Daughter of the late Mr. and Mrs. Abraham G. and Alice M. Houghton, she was born Sept. 19, 1878, in Novesta Township. She was married to Mr. Dodge in 1909.

Surviving are: two children, by a former marriage, Carl J. Martin of Los Angeles, Calif., and Mrs. A. N. Bigelow of Cass City; two granddaughters, Mrs. Frederick Auten of Cass City and Miss JoAnn Bigelow of Dearborn, and a great-granddaughter, Mardi Blair Auten.³

Joseph M. Dodge Died Suddenly

Unexpected Demise A Great Shock To Large Circle of Friends

The news of the death of "Joe" Dodge spread over town Tuesday evening, Dec. 9, as a shock mingled with pain and sorrow. Entirely unexpected, many friends had difficulty in first believing that the report was authentic that the prominent and well known citizen had answered the final call at his home on West Main St. early that evening. While Mr. Dodge had been keeping to the house for a few days by what was considered a slight ailment, members of his family and friends who called had no inkling of any serious illness and the community received a great shock when he passed away so suddenly. Death was due to heart failure.

Joseph M. Dodge was born in Elmwood township, Tuscola county, on Dec. 6, 1871. After completing his studies in the public school, he entered the Ontario Veterinary College at Toronto. After his graduation, he practiced his profession as a veterinary surgeon in connection with his farming operations at Elmwood until his appointment as postmaster at Cass City in 1916. In 1898, he was united in marriage with Miss Mae Warner. She died in 1906 and two years later, he married her cousin, Mrs. Harriet M. Martin.

Mr. Dodge has always been keenly interested in community and political activities. At two different times, he has served as president of the Cass City fair and last year was elected as the first president of the Cass City Community club. He was a director and vice president of the Pinney State Bank, a member of the board of directors of the Farm Produce Company, and a member of Cass City Lodge, I.O.O.F. Mr. Dodge retired as postmaster Nov. 1 after serving for eight years in that office.

Mr. and Mrs. Dodge have planned for some time to make a trip to California o visit relatives after his retirement from his government position. Christmas Day had been set as the time of their arrival in the western state.

Besides his wife, Mr. Dodge leaves two step-children, Miss Marie Martin of Cass City, and Carl Martin of Los Angeles, California, his father, Henry Dodge of Los Angeles, one brother, Lawrence Dodge of Ontario, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Rambo of Marlette.

Funeral services will be conducted at the residence this (Friday) afternoon at 3:30, by Rev. I. W. Cargo. Interment will be made in Elkland cemetery.²

Of interest to many of the older citizens here is the news that recently in the Birmingham Community House, Mrs. Eugene Rowley, the former Henrietta Houghton and former resident here, now 80 years old, starred in the English play, "Mystery." Mrs. Rowley first starred in the drama in Bay City in 1890.²

Announcement has been received of the marriage of Myrl N. Rowley, a former resident of this city, to Herbert Bradford Thompson of Muskegon, Michigan. Miss Rowley is resigning her position as automobile claims manager of the General Casualty & Surety Company, Detroit, but will continue with the Hospiters, a business woman's club, in charge of their summer camp, Kingsville on Lake Erie. Miss Rowley has been secretary of the club for the past two years and they have recently taken over the Kantor home at 209 Eliot Place as a club house. The Thompsons left Detroit Thursday evening for Chicago where Mr. Thompson is representing the Detroit College of Law in the intercollegiate debate.¹

Neil McPhail of Turner, Mich, died in a Bay City hospital on Sunday at 11:30 p.m. The body was brought here Wednesday and the funeral held at the M. E. church at two o'clock. He was 51 years of age and was born on a farm near Carsonville where he lived until grown to manhood. He leaves a widow and four children, Mrs. Sadie Tibbets of Wisconsin and Archie, Gladys and Clarence at home.²

Joseph M. Dodge Died Suddenly

Unexpected Demise A Great Shock To Large Circle of Friends

The news of the death of "Joe" Dodge spread over town Tuesday evening, Dec. 9, as a shock mingled with pain and sorrow. Entirely unexpected, many friends had difficulty in first believing that the report was authentic that the prominent and well known citizen had answered the final call at his home on West Main St. early that evening. While Mr. Dodge had been keeping to the house for a few days by what was considered a slight ailment, members of his family and friends who called had no inkling of any serious illness and the community received a great shock when he passed away so suddenly. Death was due to heart failure.

Joseph M. Dodge was born in Elmwood township, Tuscola county, on Dec. 6, 1871. After completing his studies in the public school, he entered the Ontario Veterinary College at Toronto. After his graduation, he practiced his profession as a veterinary surgeon in connection with his farming operations at Elmwood until his appointment as postmaster at Cass City in 1916. In 1898, he was united in marriage with Miss Mae Warner. She died in 1906 and two years later, he married her cousin, Mrs. Harriet M. Martin.

Mr. Dodge has always been keenly interested in community and political activities. At two different times, he has served as president of the Cass City fair and last year was elected as the first president of the Cass City Community club. He was a director and vice president of the Pinney State Bank, a member of the board of directors of the Farm Produce Company, and a member of Cass City Lodge, I.O.O.F. Mr. Dodge retired as postmaster Nov. 1 after serving for eight years in that office.

Mr. and Mrs. Dodge have planned for some time to make a trip to California o visit relatives after his retirement from his government position. Christmas Day had been set as the time of their arrival in the western state.

Besides his wife, Mr. Dodge leaves two step-children, Miss Marie Martin of Cass City, and Carl Martin of Los Angeles, California, his father, Henry Dodge of Los Angeles, one brother, Lawrence Dodge of Ontario, Calif., and one sister, Mrs. Wm. Rambo of Marlette.

Funeral services will be conducted at the residence this (Friday) afternoon at 3:30, by Rev. I. W. Cargo. Interment will be made in Elkland cemetery.²
