ResearchNancy Klimon: Mar 22, 2016: Thanks Charlie. I will try to contact them. So I take it they didn't provide you with sources then?

I have spoken with the author of the Sinks family history, which contains the names of Cecelia Calvert and William Houghton as the parents of Priscilla. He told me that the only documentation that he had to support this claim was the verbal report of someone on an old DAR application. There has been no documentation found thus far, as far as I can tell, to support or to negate that claim. I have been unable to locate the DAR report and I cannot access this book, as it is not available online or for purchase.

As for the origin of William Houghton, it was this same DAR report, I believe, that listed NY as the birth location of William Houghton. But there is no available documentation to support that either.

The marriage record of Priscilla Calvert Houghton and William Horrall would seem to be a good source for confirming the parents names, but that hasn't been located either.

I'm not saying these details are incorrect...only that they have not been proven by supporting documentation.

As for the documentation that I found recently....there was a Houghton family on the eastern shore of MD in the 1700s. I do not have a tree of any kind developed, as I'm focusing on trying to determine if there was a connection to my William Houghton. Of note, there was also a Calvert family not far away, but no record of a Cecilia in that family thus far. I will send you the record I found, and will keep you posted of any developments.

Hi, Nancy,

I had naively accepted very old DAR records for the maiden name and the names of William Horrall's father and mother-in-law. I have been unable to verify that information. The book would be of no value for information about William Houghton and Celia Calvert. I have searched for them on a variety of records and not found them.

Good morning. Per the email exchange below I am requesting assistance with a brick wall I’ve encountered related to the Calvert surname. Here are the facts.

1) I enjoy genealogy as a hobby, and for a friend of mine, i offered a few years ago to plug her family information into Ancestry.comand see what I could find. It didn’t take too long for the surname CALVERT to pop up, but I know enough to not assume anything, and so began a several year search to document her lineage to that point. I did do that, and provided my documentation to John Clement, who verified my sources and incorporated the information (for everyone except those living and her grandfather, for whom I didn’t have a death certificate) into his tree at this location.

http://wc.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi?op=PED&db=johnclem09&id=I33028

2) Specifically, we are looking to find out more about Cecilia Calvert, who married William Houghton. I have attached a descendent chart for William Houghton, ending with my friend’s grandfather, Charles Ernest Harting. I hope this is sufficient - I can run other reports for you, but prefer to keep my friend and her father, who are both living, private for now.

3) There is great misinformation on Ancestry.com, with many people assuming, without confirmation, that Cecilia is part of the Maryland Calvert family. In fact, there really is weak confirmation that Priscilla Calvert (Houghton) Horrall was the daughter of Cecilia Calvert and William Houghton. I have not been able to locate either a birth record or a marriage record, and some sources state that Priscilla was born in Maryland while others say she was born in Virginia.

4) I have found no sources, other than gravesite documentation (Find a Grave) to document the existence of Cecilia Calvert and William Houghton. Nothing. In fact, I wonder if Cecilia wasn’t from Maryland at all — perhaps she was from Virginia, or Pennsylvania? And William Houghton — there is a great deal of misinformation out there about him too, and I’m not at all convinced that I have 100% correct information for him on my tree. I’ve had various parents in there for him over the last few years, and removed them all recently (hopefully all traces of the wrong information) because I wasn’t sure it was correct.

5) I have posted messages on all of the Calvert and Southern MD genealogy Facebook pages, with no success. Over the last decade or so, a few other people have posted messages online trying to solve this mystery. My friend knows I’m doing this today, but I am very respectful of her privacy, and I think it is her decision if she chooses to share any of this publicly, and how much of it.

I’m very grateful for your assistance. My friend lives in PG county and works in AA county, and I recently moved to Hanover PA but I’m in Annapolis about once every five to six weeks (usually on weekends) and could visit if necessary. I do have some health issues, however, and try to do as much as I can electronically.

Thank you very much. My contact information follows.
