BiographyBirth certificate 278-226, Hutchinson, Reno Co., Kansas, of Frank E. Reed shows mother, Harriet Alice Billing, 306 w. 10th st., Hutchinson Kansas, was 24 years of age at birth in 1909, putting her birth about 1885.
Frank Reed grew up near Alamosa, Colorado. When he was about eight years of age, his family moved in a mule drawn wagon to a small farm near Tres Piedras, New Mexico. When he was in the fifth grade, a teacher, who had thrown a young student through a window, attacked Frank during a woodworking class. Frank hit him with a 2 X 4 and ran away from school.
Frank's father, Wm. W. Reed, deserted the family and Frank was unwanted by his mother. He ran away from home, worked in various kitchens, etc. and eventually went to work on construction crews building railway tunnels through Colorado. He worked for a molybdenum mine near Climax, Colorado for awhile. While he was working there, and spending a weekend in Delta, Colorado, he met Laurel Reed, escorted her home from a dance. Laurel was teaching school in Delta, and had taught in Mack and Fruita Colorado. They were married on February 11, 1928.
They moved to Grand Junction, Colorado and Frank Elben Reed Jr. was born on February 12, 1929. A year later, Paul Edward Reed was born in Salt Lake City, Utah on February 8, 1930.
This was during the depression, and work was hard to find. Frank moved to Sacramento, California in 1931, started working as a chef at the Union Pacific Station restaraunt. He sent money and had Laurel and children join him. They travelled to California by train. They moved to Jackson, California about 1932 where he worked for the Pioneer Rex Restaraunt as a chef. Frank was asked to go to work part time for Safeway Stores and was then asked to join them full time. In about 1935 he was asked to move to Manteca and then Modesto (or vice versa) to trouble shoot Safeway stores, then in 1936 was moved to San Andreas, California to manage the Safeway Store. He stayed with them until about 1940, when he was asked to move again to manage the store in Angels Camp. He refused, worked at Calaveras Cement Plant for a brief period, then worked for Winkler's Grocery Store. In 1944, he bought a small store from Reynards in Mokelumne Hill, California and owned it until 1947, when it was sold. When the buyers failed, he took the store over again. In about 1949-50 he bought the grocery store at Railroad Flat, California and operated it for several years, then sold it., and retired to Mokelumne Hill.
