Annie was brought to America when she was six years old by Joseph Benjamin Walton, who met the child and her mother while serving a mission for the LDS Church in England in 1895. Her mother was very poor and could not provide. Her parents were unmarried. No adoption papers have been found. She was raised by the Walton family in Provo, Utah. Both her parents were from Lanchester, Durham, England. She had red curly hair.²
