Death of Mrs. Geo. Houghton was a Pioneer Resident of Carver, and Well Know
to Old Settlers
Mrs. Houghton; widow of the Late Captain George Houghton, and old time
resident of Carver, and a Sister of the Late Enoch Holmes, died at her
Residence in that City(my note Minneapolis) May 3rd, 1911 Deceased must of
been about 83 years of age, and had been in poor health for the past few
years.We clip the following obituary from the Minneapolis Journal of
Thursday May 4th:"After a residence of fifty-three
years in Minnesota, and identification with the Minnesota River valley and
Minneapolis from territorial days, Mrs. Lydia E. Houghton, widow of Captain
Geo Houghton, died last night at her home 520 University Ave SE. Mrs.
Houghton, whose maiden name was Holmes, came to Minnesota in the statehood
year 1858, from Pittsburg. Her relatives lived in Carver County where she
spent the major portion of her life, coming to Minneapolis to live later on.
She had a wide local acquaintance with the pioneer men and women.
Captain George Hopugthon, her Husband, who died about eight years ago,
commanded the steamer Antelope that plied the Mississippi river from St.
Paul to Carver. He Was a pioneer in river traffic in the northwest and with
Mrs. Houghton was known to all the old settlers of that part of Minnesota.
When the Omaha and Minneapolis & St. Louis Roads built into the Territory
about Carver, the Steamboat line that Capt. Hougthon operated was abandoned.
Mrs. Houghton Leaves two Sons, George N. Houghton & William B. Mohler both
residents in Minneapolis."5

ResearchKathy Ostvig: CLARIFICATION alot of records state that Mollie Mohler was the wife of
George Houghton this is an assumption made because of his naming his boat
the "Mollie Mohler." This boat was named after his step daughter Mary
Mohler who married George A. Dutoit of Carver, MN this is stated in a
newspaper article I have copies of that the boat was named for her.


On George's wife Lydia Holmes Mohler Houghton I have the following info


notes on sextant records indicate Lydia Houghton Grave side was purchased by
Wm. B. Mohler of Omaha.Lakewood Cemetery


Since Georges boat was named the Mollie Mohler I am assuming that his wife
Lydias Maiden name was Mohler

Census record indicate an Edward H Houghton living with George and Lydia in
1880 age of 8 years old. with parents born Vermont and Pennsylvania the 1875
census for George & Lydia list and Edward Houghton age 3 parents born Vt.,
Germany.


The birth records at Carver co. Government Buiilding indicate Eddie Holmes
Houghton born 8 Feb 1872 as being an Orphan and no Parents listed, James
death date is listed as 3 Feb 1872 and Eureka death Date listed as 12 Feb
1872.Obit for James list death date as 31 Jan 1872.


Because of age and records I am inclined to believe that Edward Houghton is
the Son of James Houghton and Eureka who is listed in the 1865 Census as
being born in Prussia. I believe he was adopted by George & Lydia.

Biographywhen she was just an infant, margaret harris was brought to utah by her grandmother, margaret mcmean martin houghton, and her mother, laura houghton harris. laura had left her husband, john harris, and her son, george harris, in st. paul, minnesota. in 1887, when she was about ten years old, her grandmother died and she was placed in a foster home in salina with john and eliza mary perkins elben, and their son ernest.
she and ernest were married on october 5, 1897. maggie graduated from wasatch academy, and attended brigham young university.
margaret harris elben was the first organist in salina. she worked in the post office, and assisted in social activities in pioneer days.
maggie was buried in the pioneer cemetary, salina, utah, and songs sung at her funeral were: whispering hope; wonderful mother of mine; lead kindly light; and sometime we'll understand.2
