Mil. EnlsJun 1, 1861Loogootee, IN, USA, in the Union Army at Loogootee in Company C of the Indiana 14th Div. of Indiana Volunteers, being selcted First Lieut., and soon achieved the rank of Captain. The 14th took oath on June 7, 1861. They left Indianapolis on July 5th and were in battle at Rich Mt., WV on the 11th. He lead his troops at the battle of Greenbrier on Oct. 3rd., at the battle of Winchester on Mar. 23rd, where he, with his regiment, gave the "Hoosier Yell" charging Stonewall Jackson's brigade, helping to win the battle. He was promoted to rank of Major for bravery at the battle of Fredericksburg, the youngest field officer in the Army of the Potomac. He fought at Bull Run, Malvern Hill, Antietem (he was wounded), Chancelersville, Fredericksburg (where he was severely wounded), Harper's Ferry, Winchester, Gettysburg, Spotsylvania Courthouse, and in the Wilderness and Shenandoah Valley campaigns. After the battle of Chancellorsville, with the title of Inspector General, he was attached to the staff of General W. S. Hancock, commander of the Second Army Corps.He knew Generals Grant, Meade, Burnside, McClelland, Sheridan, Kearney, Birney, and Hancock.

At about 2 A.M., Major William Houghton, of the 14th Indiana Regiment and no relation to Chester Houghton, would arrive at the Brown House to assist Generals Hancock, Gibbon, Barlow, and Birney in final preparation for the day‘s assault.5,7,8,9,10
