Elmer S. Houghton, 86, well known Businessman and Philanthropist of Bronson, died Sunday, January 9, 2005, at the Community Health Center of Branch County following a lengthy illness.

He was born February 19, 1918 in Battle Creek, and was raised in Gary, Indiana.? He graduated from Brighton, Indiana High School and moved to Bronson where he resided the rest of his life.

Elmer married Doris I. Smith. Along with friends, Floyd Kibiloski and Paul Knapp, he formed Bronson Specialties. He retired in 1979 after the sale of the company.

Always very active in his community, Elmer served many years as a Director on several Boards including Church, City and County Government, many Civic Organizations and Century Bank & Trust (formerly Branch County Bank).

Elmer and Doris were both well known for their generosity and benevolence over the years, generously supporting a great many projects in Branch County.

Surviving are his wife, Doris, daughters and sons-in-law, Jean and Dominic Roussey and Judy and Keith Tracy, all of Bronson; sons and daughters-in-law, Jerry and Anne Houghton of Bronson and Elmer and Jackie Houghton, Jr. of Wayland, MI; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and 2 great-great grandchildren.?

Funeral Services will be held at 1:00 p.m., Thursday, January 13, 2005, at St. Mary of Assumption Church in Bronson, with Pastor Terry Siler of the First Congregational United Church of Christ, officiating.? Interment will follow at Bronson Cemetery. Visitation will be at the Kolcz Funeral Home, from 4:00 to 8:00 p.m., Tuesday and from 2:00 to 8:00 p.m., Wednesday.

He resided his position as Boy Scouts board of directors. He was then made Director General of Operations. He was involved in several anti-trust suits at the time. Corning, and several other companies as well as Amory Houghton, were found guilty in 1942 of violating the Sherman Antitrust Act, since 1916. He resigned from the War Production Board. An appeal to the Supreme Court found that an illegal trust had existed in the glass container market, but overturned the injuction to undo patent ownership rights. In 1943 he accepted the post od deputy chief of the U.S. Mission for Economic Affairs and he resigned in 1944.16

Deceased Name: AMORY HOUGHTON OF CORNING GLASS WORKS --Amory Houghton, chairman emeritus of the Corning Glass Works and former United States Ambassador to France, died yesterday at the Medical University Hospital in Charleston, S.C. He was 81 years old and was a resident of Corning, N.Y.
Mr. Houghton served as Ambassador to France from 1957 to 1961 during the administration of President Dwight D. Eisenhower. The French Government subsequently awarded him the insignia of the Grand Croix of the Legion of Honor.
Mr. Houghton devoted his entire business career to the glass works, which has its headquarters in Corning, and was the fourth generation of his family associated with it. The concern traces its founding to a glass company established in 1851 by his great-grandfather, whose name was also Amory Houghton.
After serving in various positions with the company, he was elected president in 1930, board chairman in 1941, chairman of the executive committee in 1961 and chairman emeritus in 1971. Even in the early Depression years, when Corning's sales were falling, it maintained a profit under his management.Championed Basic Research
Mr. Houghton was strongly committed to basic research as the prime source of growth. One such project was the development of a method to produce glass blocks in collaboration with Pittsburgh Plate Glass Company in 1937 that resulted in the formation of Pittsburgh Corning Corporation.
Another advance was the development of a method to produce glass fibers that led to the formation of the Owens-Corning Fiberglas Corporation in association with the Owens-Illinois Glass Company in 1938. Corning's commercial production of silicones resulted in an association with the Dow Chemical Company in 1943 and the formation of the Dow Corning Corporation.
Mr. Houghton's Government career began in 1941, when he was appointed assistant deputy director of the materials division, Office of Production Management. In 1942, he was named deputy chief of the War Production Board's bureau of industry branches, and in 1943-44 he was chief mission officer for the Lend-Lease Administration. In each of those positions, he served for $1 a year.
In his work for the Lend-Lease Administration, he was based in London and was charged with expediting the flow of war materials to Britain and the European battlefront. A Graduate of Harvard
Mr. Houghton, who was born in Corning, attended St. Paul's School in Concord, N.H., and received a Bachelor of Arts degree from Harvard University in 1921. In that year, he married Laura DeKay Richardson of Providence, R.I., who survives.
When the glass works observed the centennial of its founding in 1951, Mr. Houghton initiated construction of the Corning Glass Center, a multipurpose building dedicated to the history, art and science of glassmaking. He also was the founder of the Corning Museum of Glass.
He had a lifelong interest in the Boy Scouts of America and served as its national president from 1946 to 1951. He was on the board of overseers of Harvard University and was a trustee of the Institute for Advanced Study at Princeton, N.J., and a trustee of Eisenhower College in Seneca Falls, N.Y.
Besides his wife, he is survived by three sons, Amory Jr. and James R., both of Corning, and Alanson B. 2d of New York City; two daughters, Elizabeth Weinberg of Greenwich, Conn., and Laura Beer of New York City; a sister, Mrs. Glen W. Cole of New York City; 18 grandchildren, and three great-grandchildren.
A funeral service will be held Tuesday at 11 A.M. at Christ Episcopal Church in Corning. A memorial service will be held in Manhattan at the Church of the Heavenly Rest, Fifth Avenue and 90th Street, Thursday at 4:30 P.M.

Amory Houghton (July 27, 1899-February 1981) was an early Boy Scouts of America Scouting notable.
Mr. Houghton served on the World Scout Committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement from 1949 until 1955.
Mr. Houghton was awarded the Bronze Wolf, the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, awarded by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world Scouting, in 1955.
Houghton also served as United States Ambassador to France. His son, Amory Houghton Jr., served as a United States Representative from New York. His father, Alanson B. Houghton, served as a United States Representative from New York, as well as U.S. Ambassador to Germany and U.S. ambassador to Great Britain.

Amory Houghton (July 27, 1899 – February 1981) served as United States Ambassador to France from 1957 to 1961 and as national president of the Boy Scouts of America. He was chairman of the board of Corning Glass Works.

In 1959 he was elected as an honorary member of the New York Society of the Cincinnati.

His father, Alanson B. Houghton, served as a United States Representative from New York, as well as U.S. Ambassador to Germany and U.S. ambassador to Great Britain. His son, Amory Houghton Jr., served as a United States Representative from New York. His second cousin was actress Katharine Hepburn.

Houghton received the Silver Buffalo Award in 1945 and served as the National president of the Boy Scouts of America from 1946-51.[citation needed] He served on the World Scout Committee of the World Organization of the Scout Movement from 1949–55. He was awarded the Bronze Wolf, the only distinction of the World Organization of the Scout Movement, awarded by the World Scout Committee for exceptional services to world Scouting, in 1955.


Corporate Executive, US Diplomat. The son of Alanson B. Houghton, he graduated from Harvard University in 1921 and joined the family business, New York's Corning Glass Works, becoming President in 1930 and Chairman of the Board in 1941. He was responsible for changing Corning's focus from industrial products to consumer goods, including Pyrex ovenware. Houghton lent his executive experience to the federal government as a "dollar a year man" during World War II, serving as Assistant Director of Materials in the Office of Production Management and Deputy Chief of the Bureau of Industry Brands for the War Production Board. In 1943 he became Deputy Chief for Economic Affairs at the US Mission in Great Britain, with responsibility for expediting delivery of materials and equipment from the United States for the war effort. Long active in the Boy Scouts of America, he served as the organization's Vice President from 1943 to 1946 and President from 1946 to 1951. He was a Delegate to the Republican National Conventions in 1948 and 1952, and was one of New York's Presidential Electors in 1956. Houghton served as Ambassador to France from 1957 to 1961. After returning to the United States he became Chairman of the Executive Committee at Corning Glass Works, and he served again as Chairman of the Board from 1964 until becoming Chairman Emeritus in 1971.
