Family of Houghton: According to the book of Houghton History by Arthur Smith, at least by die information someone hand-wrote in the copy at the New England Historic Genealogical Society in Boston, John was the son of John Houghton and Damaris Buckmaster and that he was christened on 12-24-1624 in Lancaster, England. - According to this same book, Beatrix may be the daughter of Benjamin and Beatrix Bosworth. According to the book on New England Families by Wm. Cutter, Beatrix married Benjamin Bosworth after her husband John Houghton died. [CJV: all erroneous]¹²

Amherst, Mass. June 14 -- Dr. Houghton Currier Smith, who practiced medicine in Trenton, N.J., for forty years until his retirement in 1942, died here yesterday. He was 77 years old.
Dr. Smith was born in Hartford, Vt., and was graduated in 1903 from the University of Maryland. After his retirement, he and Mrs. Smith lived in New Hampshire. They came to Amherst last year.
In September Dr. Smith would have completed fifty years as a Mason. While in Trenton, he was a member of the Mercer County Medical Society.
Surviving are his widow, a son and a daughter.⁸

Biography

Aaron Runyan Houghton, youngest son of Charles P. and Elizabeth VanDeventer Houghton, was born in 1825. He was left an orphan when ten years of age, and lived with his brother and sister. He served one year in the Mexican War.

In 1854 he was married to Elvira Stephenson, and settled on the Stephenson farm. To them were born three children; James F., who died in early manhood, Charles William, who owns the home place and is an elder in the church, and Mary Adaline, wife of G. L. Harnsberger, of Springfield.

Mrs. Houghton was a woman of fine Christian character, and like Dorcas of old, was full of good works. Mr. Houghton was a prosperous farmer, a man of affable disposition, and greatly interested in civic affairs. The same spirit which actuated him in the Mexican War and his grandfather in the Revolutionary War was present with his three grandsons in the World War: James F. Houghton, First Lieutenant in the Officers' Training Camp; Ralph H. Houghton, in the Navy, and Edward W. Houghton, a Marine.
