Note MLM: He was chosen principal of the Kershaw School, Sept. 1, 1901; tr. to Englewood H.S., Sept. 16, 1903 (according to his son Herbert, there is something wrong with that record, for he was tr. to the George William H.S., later named the Christian Fenger H.S., in the Roseland area near the West Pullman Works. here he taught until the time of his death. It is understood that he played football at Harvard, as rules then did not exclude graduate students; he started the program of football in Chicago high schools - one of the first games his school played was with Alonzo Stagg's newly formed University of Chicago team. In speaking at Mr. Houghton's funeral service, the Principal of Christian Fenger H.S. said that the team came out on the field with brand new uniforms - the coach wore the same uniform as the players. As the team came out on the field, Mr. Houghton led them into a mud puddle, so that there would be no hesitancy to get dirty or muddy during the game.⁷
