Cox: She married a very successful merchant in Ottawa. When her husband died in 1875 Ottawa had one of the largest funerals the city had ever seen. They lived in a home that was referred to as The Hunton House. I have not been able to find a photo of the house but it stood where The Ottawa Public Library Central Branch now stands.

Amelia Houghton was born on 12 December 1821 at Upper Canada, Canada. She was the daughter of Luther Houghton and Sabra Billings. Amelia Houghton married Thomas Hunton say 1842. Amelia Houghton was listed as the wife of Thomas Hunton in the 1871 Canadian Census for Wellington Ward, Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. Amelia Houghton and Thomas Hunton were Wesleyan Methodist on 15 April 1871. Amelia Houghton was left a widow by the death of Thomas Hunton on 13 February 1875 at Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada.^11,2,6 Amelia Houghton was listed as the Head of the Household in the 1881 Canadian Census for Wellington Ward, Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, ^Canada.⁶ Amelia Houghton was Wesleyan Methodist on 4 April 1881. She was listed as the mother of Annie Margaret Hunton in the 1901 Canadian Census for St George Ward, Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. Amelia Houghton was Methodist on 31 March 1901.¹³ She lived on 3 November 1902 at 445 Daly Street, Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada. She died on 3 November 1902 at Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada, at age 80. She was buried on 5 November 1902 at Beechwood Cemetery, Ottawa, Carleton County, Ontario, Canada.

Biography

Carole Pyles: The genealogy complied by Robert Skelton 20/30 years ago. It said Maria's husband, Luther, disappeared, William W. Skelton then married her and they had children, next out of the blue, Luther reappeared and Maria rejoined him leaving William out. According to a yesterday's e-mail, William and Maria were divorced. In 1879, he remarried. When Maria died in 1906, William's sister, Susanna, did not want Maria to be buried in the family lot. Besides the divorce, an unstated reason was Maria was Indian. She was buried next to William, but had no marker until 1991 when her grandchildren bought a stone to mark her grave.

Had rheumatism and used opium to relieve pain.

Agness Skelton Schmidt send me her 2003 book, Auburn and Williams Township. It contains many old photographs. There is short biography for William Skelton "....He was married in 1855 to Miss Maria Ann Luther of Milford⁷

Biography

He left England at the age of 25 alone for New York from where he went to Milford, Oakland Co., MI, where he had relatives. He married Maria Ann Houghton Luther in 1853 and in Oct. 1854 bought land in Section three, William's Twp, Bay Co., MI. He was the first settler in the wilderness of the township named for him. The farm near Auburn, 2 miles north of the Midland road,on the east side of the Fisherville Road. On Jan. 9 1855, after he cut a sled road through 10 miles of woods and swamps, he built a cabin. He and Maria had six children. He left his wife and family and married Mrs. Ann Eliza Catlin of Bay City in 1879, which appears to be when Maria's first husban returned "from the dead". William died by asphyxiation in a root cellar while cutting up mangelworzels for cow fodder on Jan. 29, 1883, at the age of 59 years and 10 days. He had a bucket of buring coals with him for warmth, which caused the axphyxiation.²
