A death certificate can't be found in Illinois for 1938 (as told by family) or the tombstone date. There is a 'Xina' Adrian in Dodge Grove Cemetery, died 8/14/1936 , age 75 years who matches. Her name on husband James Willard Adrian's death certificate appears to be 'Xira.' It's 'Zira' on the census, and 'Zirah' in the Houghton genealogy.⁶

He was an assay officer and worked "somewhere out west." Jack Edward Houghton retained a collection of Indian projectile points that Jerome "gave to the kids from his travels out west" back in the early 1900's.

Jerome moved to Chicago (from Michigan I think) and then to Webster Groves, MO (a suburb of St. Louis)

He is of the firm of Houghton & Riddle, contractors and builders, Chicago.¹⁰

Biography

Per death certificate, parents were Stephen Houghton born in Ohio and Martha Creft born in Ohio. He was married to Ella F. Houghton. He was an organizer for the mining industry and had been retired for ten years at time of death. Informant on the death certificate was Dr. M.G. Houghton of Webster Groves, Missouri.

Jan. 1856, age 44, born IN, father b. PA, mother b. OH Dodge Grove Cemetery has a burial for 'Infant of JW', d. 6/1/1902, 2years. This could be a child of James and Zara, or a child of the youngerJohn W. Adrian. This John Willard Adrian was b. 3/19/1889 in Mattoon, wasin St. Louis City, MO, for the WWI Civilian Draft Registration, and buried at Dodge Grove with a death date of 10/10/1918, age 29. Because he's not on the 1900 census, I'm assuming he isn't James and Zara's child.⁴
