BiographyJWH: "Ross C. and wife both studied at Fally Seminary. His collegiate education was received at Union College. Leaving the study of law he studied in Concord Biblical Institute, now School of Theology of Boston University, graduated at Syracuse University, N.Y. His pastorates included prominent churches in Utica, Buffalo, St. Louis, Cleveland, Indianapolis, and Portland, Ore. He was president of McKendree College, Lebanon, Ill. In 1873-4 he was traveling companion of Bishop Harris in the first episcopal tour of the world; was present at the founding of the Methodist Episcopal Missions in Japan. Traveled in China, India, Egypt, Turkey, Greece, and the Holy Land. A successful pastor, popular lecturer andd author. Among his books are 'Women of the Orient', 'Ruth the Moabitiss,''John the Baptist,''Christian Education in its Relation to Christian Work,''Novels, and How to Read Them,''The Social Evil; the Duty of Christians in Regard to It,''Future Punishment, Will it be Eternal? What is its Nature? On What Conditions will it be Inflicted?''Tabathi With Jesus,''The American Highlanders,' and a novel McCartney.' He left in manuscript 'Historical Writers of America' and 'The Palm Groves of Olivet'. He was also a frequent contributor to magazines and religious papers. Lectured frequently in University Extension Courses and various schools and colleges. From various colleges and universities he received the degree of D.D., Lit. D., D.C.L., and L.H.D. he was a member of the American Authors' Guild and the American Historical Asss'n, The Winthrop Club of Boston, and the Society of Biblical Archaeology of London. He was a delegate to the Ecumenical Methodist Conference of 1891; fraternal delegate to Wesleyan General Conference in Canada; and twice a delegate to National Conference of the Congregational Church, having as his last pastorate been installed over the First Congregational Church Chelsea, Mass., which he held eight years, until his death. Among high encomiums of the press when he had so suddenly passed away, the Boston Transcript said of him: 'He possessed a happy combination of qualities, rare talent, ample learning, genial manners, large experience among mankind, a ready tongue and pen, the ability to direct his whole faculties immediately to any required task, and the power of enduring hard and continuous work.' After resigning his charge at Chelsea he was for some time secretary at Peidemont College, and the Southern Educational Work of the Congregational Church among the American Highlanders in Alabama, and Georgia. Finding the duties too arduous for his strength, he resigned and accepted an appointment as professor of English and American Literature in the Boston Institute, which position he occupied at the time of his death."

Rev Ross C. Houghton offered a prayer at the burial services of President James A. Garfield, who was buried in Cleveland Ohio. Present were 150,000 mourners.
On Saturday evening Miss Couzins gave a delightful reception. Her parlors were crowded until a late hour, where the friends of woman suffrage had an opportunity to use their influence socially in converting many distinguished guests. On Sunday night Mrs. Stanton was invited by the Rev. Ross C. Houghton to occupy his pulpit in the Union Methodist church, the largest in the city of that denomination. She preached from the text in Genesis i., 27, 28. The sermon was published in the St. Louis Globe the next morning.[Note 1] Mrs. Thompson was also invited

The pastor of the First Congregational church is a native of New York, and was educated at Union college and Syracuse university, receiving his degree at the latter institution. He is also an alumnus of the Concord Biblical institute now the School of Theology of Boston university. Ordained in April, 1869, he has been p a s t o r of prominent churches i n U t i c a and Buffalo,N.Y., St. L o u i s, Mo., Cleveland, Ohio, Indianapolis, Ind., and P o r t l a n d , Oregon. For some time he was p r e s i dent of the McKendree college in Lebanon, 111. Under c i rcumstances especially favorable, to careful observation and study, in 1873-4 he made a tour of the world, u s i n g the material thus secured in publishing "Women of the Orient," "Ruth, the Moabitess," and "John, the Baptist." The first of these books, of which he is the author, has had a remarkable sale, standing in that respect among the very first of its kind. The other two books have proved almost as popular. He has also published several others purely religious in character and for some years has been known as a prolific and favorable writer for religious magazines and newspapers. For several years Dr. Houghton devoted all the time he could spare from the duties of a large city pastorate to the lecture platform, and as a lecturer was heard and appreciated in nearly all the cities of N. Y. and the western states, his subjects being based upon his travels and literary topics. He has also lectured frequently in university extension courses and various schools and colleges. As a lecturer, he ranks among the foremost of the day, and in this particular the press of the country bestows on him high encomiums.
He is a member o f the society of Biblical Archaeology of London and several other literary and historical associations. He was installed as pastor of the
First Congregational church of t h i s city, April 1 7, 1895. At t h a t time, Rev. C. E. Jefferson, D.D., then pastor of the Central Congregational church, said of him : "We congratulate the First church on the good fortune of securing such a man. He carries sunlight into the homes where he visits and is a welcome speaker or guest wherever he goes. He had not been many weeks in our city before he had a large circle of acquaintances and friends, and from the first day of his coming until now, the church has been rejoicing and growing under his ministry."

Educated at Syracuse University, where he was given degrees, A.B., A.M., Ph.D., and D.D. He was a member of the Phi Beta Kappa and also Delta Kappa Epsilon; at different times served as trustee of Cazenovia Seminary and Syracuse University; and served pastorates at Wolcott, New York, Geddes, Auburn. First Congregational Church, Cambridge, Mass., Cortland and Clifton Springs, NY, and Towanda, Pa. Traveled extensively in Europe, Egypt, Palestine and Greece. He was a power in the church and took an active part in all the conferences and was widely known throughout New York State, especially in the Central New York conferences. He was an earnest preacher, a great scholar, a gentleman whom it was a privilege and pleasure to know."

At the time of her death the Cortland Evening Standard said Mrs Houghton was born July 7 1843 She was the daughter of Socrates and Susan Harris Ayres Mr Ayres was born in Tru mansburg where his ancestors settled and where descendants of the family are still found A family genealogy now in process of publication and largely edited by Mrs Houghton traces the family history in unbroken line to Wiltshire England 1590 The family of Susan Harris lived in Pine Plains Dutchess Co Mrs Houghton's parents were married in 1841 and for the three following years lived in Penn Yan NY where Mrs Houghton was born The family moved to Elmira in 1844 and there Mr Ayres established a jewelry and insurance business which he conducted for over forty years Mrs Hough ton was educated in the public schools of Elmira and the Elmira College graduating from the college in 1863 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts She was married to Rev Oscar A Houghton at that time pastor of the Methodist Episcopal Church in Wolcott NY Sept i 1869 Since then Dr Houghton has served churches as f ollows Syracuse First ward and West Genesee street Ithaca Syracuse Centenary Clyde Elmira Hedding Church and also Centenary Church Auburn and North Avenue Congregational Church Cambridge Mass In all these places Mrs Houghton was the efficient helper of her husband and left many sincere friends Mrs Houghton's student abilities were well known Her special field was American and English constitutional history While living in Syracuse in 1893 5 she took resident postgraduate study in Syracuse University under Prof Wm H Mace Her major subject was American constitutional history and her minor subject English mediaeval history In 1895 she successfully passed oral and written examinations for the degrees of Master of Arts and Doctor of Philosophy Prior to that time she had spent several years in the study of French history particularly the period of the French Revolution Last June her scholastic attainments were further recognized by an election to the honorary society of Phi Beta Kappa She was unable by reason of her failing health to present herself for initiation In 1886 Mrs Houghton spent some time in travel and study in Germany and the Netherlands The following year she traveled in England Scotland Wales and France spending some time in Paris In the winter of 1897 and 98 she was the travelling companion of Mrs Esther B Steele of Elmira in Mexico and the far West contributing in the meantime to various periodicals She was greatly interested in Mexican history and became a recognized authority in that subject She prepared parlor lectures on American Mexican and English history and on home missionary work as she observed it on the Pacific coast which were delivered in various places receiving high commendations from the press and from intelligent auditors Mrs Houghton has suffered deeply in the immediate past few vears in the loss of many family relatives her father mother one brother aunt and two cousins all having died within five years She leaves beside her husband Rev OA Houghton DD a son Harris A Houghton a fourth year student in the College of Medicine,

In Elmira which was her birthplace and her home marriage knowledge of her death brings especial sadne remain in this city those who remember her in her bright ising girlhood those who were her associates in youth age and some bound to her by ties of kindred B there are many who in later years have known the uvms her womanhood and felt the superiority of her ir te these but will speak of her today with a sense that sot and gracious has passed beyond Susan Ayres was born July 7 1843 daughter ot and of Susan Harris his wife Her father was 1 among Elmira's business men and was well known the First Methodist Church with which he was cc from a half century There lives in Elmira a worna the day when he and his wife then young people y took their babe Susan to the church altar for bapti This child was educated in the Elmira scVioc uate of Elmira College In 1867 Oscar A Houg just beginning the work of ministry supplied th Church pulpit for six months Shortly after this S his wife This marriage removed Mrs Houghton she has always been a frequent visitor here and si tions to former friends and an undiminished love f...
Indeed her returns have seemed like those of one who from time to time simply came to her own again Twice Dr Houghton has been appointed to Elmira charges serving a full term at Redding Church and a year at Centenary This renewed former companionships and revived former attachments Of the fulness and achievements of Mrs Houghton's life much might be written She was a woman highly endowed and with a capacity for development rarely equalled Nature intended her for a student and so far as life allowed she became one Her intellectual discernments were quick and true Her patience in following their leadings was untiring On the day when her son and only child Harris was graduated from Syracuse University Mrs Houghton took a degree there won by a course of study such as few women accomplish To the time when the inroads of disease made application no longer possible she still earnestly sought to know more of the things beloved evermore of scholars
But not in books alone did Mrs Houghton learn In travel and in observation she delighted to add to her store of knowledge and the lessons she pondered were full of inspiration to those with whom she spoke of them In the ripeness of her thought her desire turned to usefulness and the educative plans of her future were the plans of one who hoped to move the thoughts of others to refining and uplifting effort These plans were broken off by death For about two years Mrs Houghton has suffered from the illness that has ended her earthly life Every known resort of medical science failed to do more than temporarily relieve and for a few months hold the disease in abeyance Through the fluctuations of hope and fear she herself has been aware of the fatal possibility VVith bright courage she looked toward life when life seemed coming back with still submission toward death when she saw it sure to conquer Only those who knew her well enough to know the indwelling spiritual things of her soul can appreciate the experience of that submission
It is difficult to speak of the hidden sacred experiences of any mortal when death has closed the book It is unfitting to speak much of them when she of whom they are spoken held them apart What they were must be inferred from what she was And Mrs Houghton was a woman of noble soul Bright positive independent in thought and action, she held in her heart the tenderest love for her friends, the capacity for sacrifice and the supremest loyalty. She was incapable of the mean word of gossip, of insincere profession of any sort...She died Dec. 9, 1900. Residence: Cortland, NY

Ida (Delemater) Houghton was his 2nd wife. He was a minister in the Central New York Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church. He died of "acute heart affliction."

Susan (Ayres) Houghton was the daughter of Socrates and Susan (Harris) Ayres. She was th 1st wife of Rev. Dr. Oscar Allen Houghton. They were married Wolcott, New York September 1, 1869. He was a minister in the Central New York Conference of the Methodist Episcopal Church.

HOUGHTON.--Few were surprised when in the morning of Sunday, Dec. 10th, Mrs. Susan Ayres Houghton, the wife of Rev. O. A. Houghton, D.D., of Cortland, departed from this life. Her long-fought battle with ill health had warned her many friends that death might be near. She herself from the first had recognized fatal possibilities , and of late had often spoken of the end as only a little in advance. Very few things connected with the services that followed were left to be determined. Most had been previously arranged by her own choice. She could not have anticipated how many would rise to speak tenderly of their appreciation, nor how many tokens of esteem would be contributed by loving friends. Though we were compelled to bury her amid the snow, she was surrounded by the flowers she loved as well. The officials of the local church in Cortland, the Cazenovia District, and the friends of her youth and college days in Elmira gave expressions to words of highest regard. Her life began July 7, 1843. Her childhood and youth were spent in Elmira, New York. She graduated from the Elmira Female College in 1863 with the degree of Bachelor of Arts. She was married to Dr. Houghton Sept. 1, 1869. Her first home was Wolcott, New York. Subsequently Dr. Houghton has served Syracuse: First Ward, Geddes, Syracuse: Centenary, Ithaca: State Street, Clyde, Elmira: Hedding, Elmira: Centenary, Auburn: First Church, North Avenue Congregational Church of CAmbridge, Mass., and Cortland: First Church. In all these places Mrs. Houghton has rendered valuable assistance. She has frequently aided the people under her influence in the selection of a high grade of reading. She had little interest in imaginary heroes of the world, and the fields of their action. She was a faithful student of American and English Constitutional history, and by a resident post-graduate course in Syracuse University earned the degree of Doctor of Philosophy. Some years ago she spent a season in study in Germany. Later she traveled extensively in European countries. Her travels were always prosecuted for the purpose of acquiring valuable knowledge. Her last excursion was in the western part of our own country and in Mexico. Two years ago, when her preparation for usefulness seemed quite complete, she was called to walk another path then the one she had chosen. Then commenced a career of heroism that merits the highest admiration. For nearly two years she has suffered from the illness that has now ended her earthly life. Medical skill could only temporarily relieve. Through the interchange of hope and fear, she has herself been aware of all the possibilities. With cheerful courage she looked toward life when it seemed returning, with silent submission toward death when she saw it sure to conquor. Her Christian faith and courage were shown in the Scripture text she chose as her support at the time of supreme peril, "Who so hearkeneth unto me shall dwell safely and shall be quiet from fear of evil." In such secure quietness her life ceased. She rests in hope of the resurrection.
