Horsch Families in Kansas

Horsch Families in Kansas

Most of the Horsch families in Kansas are descendents of three sons and a grandson of Michael Horsch and Elizabeth Hoffman. Michael Horsch was born in 1818 in Wiesbaum, Germany to Peter Horsch and Helen Stein. He immigrated to America in 1845, and settled in Fond du Lac county, Wisconsin. He married Elizabeth Hoffman in 1847, and they had ten children.

Three of Michael's sons, Anton, Peter and Hubert, moved to Kansas. Anton married Theresa Heimerman in 1877 in Wisconsin, and together with their one year old daughter, Mary Ann, they moved to Kansas in 1879. They settled in Sedgwick county, near the town of Andale.

Peter and Hubert married the Bly sisters, Caroline and Mary, in 1884 in St. Cloud, Wisconsin. Both couples traveled together to western Kansas, near Liberal, where they lived for a few years. Around 1888, both families moved to farms in the Andale area.

Another brother, Theodore, stayed in Wisonsin, where his farm is still owned by one of his descendents. One of Theodore's sons, Peter, moved to the Andale, Kansas area, and took over Anton's farm after he retired from farming. Peter had married Mary Heimerman in Wisconsin in 1908 before they moved to Kansas. Peter was known as Peter Horsch, Jr., while his uncle was known as Peter Horsch, Sr.

Today, the descendents of Anton, Hubert, Peter Sr. and Peter Jr. are concentrated in the areas around Andale, Colwich, Wichita and Wellington.
