I have some data on Kansas Hollingers and will look-up limited data.

We have a old book about Hollingers, that was my wife's maiden name. There
family came from PA to Kansas in late 1800's and settled around Russell
Kansas.

        There are no children listed for any child of John Hollinger other than
Clayton Albert Hollinger. Looks like John died in Russell County KS on June
10, 1910. His father and mother were buried in Fulton County Cemetery
Illinois.George Edward Hollinger lived a good life so he most likely had
children. There are other Hollingers in Kansas who I hear are distance
relatives of my wife's family, one Hollinger lives near Great Bend KS. They
are not in this book.

Hello, listbuds. Wanted to let y'all know I found my couple--William T. and
Florence G. Lee, in the 1880 census in Russell. He was a lawyer; she was
keeping house, they were both 26 years old. They lived on 5th Street,
between
the residences of David Hollinger, a store clerk, and James E. Dodge, a
physician. Can anyone tell me what the population would have been of
Russell
at the time, and how many lawyers the city might have had? I know from
reading the history of the Bunker Hill/Russell county seat controversy that
Russell didn't have a laywer in 1874, so I'm guessing my couple arrived
after
that. I still don't know what happened to the Lees...has anyone walked the
cemeteries in Russell? Thanks in advance for your help. Laura in North

J. W. HOLLINGER, 45 of 315 Sixth Avenue, died Tuesday afternoon in a local
hospital. Mr. HOLLINGER was a former manager of the Chesterfield Pharmacy
and had been a resident here for 16 years. He was a member of the Topeka
Lodge No. 204. B. P. O. E. Surviving Mr. HOLLINGER are his father, I. J.
HOLLINGER of Bowling Green, O. : one son Neil HOLLINGER of Topeka, and
one brother Chance HOLLINGER of Detroit Mich. Funeral Services will be
held Monday afternoon at 1:30 o'clock from Shelbarger's Chapel. Services
in charge of the B. P. O. E. Burial in the Topeka Cemetery.

Bonnie Hullinger, 75, Oklahoma City, formerly of Topeka, died Sunday, Sept.
1, 2002, at an Oklahoma City hospital, where she was admitted Thursday.She
was born Dec. 15, 1926, in Reading, Pa., where she spent her early life and
graduated from high school. She lived in Topeka for about 50 years before she
moved to Oklahoma City in October. She worked at the Topeka Hypermart store
for more than 10 years before she retired in 1999.She married Clarence J.
Hullinger in 1965 in Topeka. He survives. Other survivors include two
daughters, Dee Blankenship, Sacramento, Calif., and Maryann Manning, Oklahoma
City; a stepdaughter, Chris Hullinger, Topeka; two sisters, Lottie Kusior and
Frances Swietzer, both in Reading, Pa.; two grandchildren; and five
great-grandchildren.Services will be at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Chapel Hill
Funeral Home in Oklahoma City. Entombment will be in Chapel Hill Mausoleum in
Oklahoma City. Mrs. Hullinger will lie in state from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m. today
at the funeral home.Memorial contributions may be made to Midland Hospice
House, 200 Frazier Circle, 66606.

GEORGE W. HACKENBERGER, a druggist and retired teacher in Bainbridge, Lancaster county, was born in that borough Dec. 9, 1835, son of Samuel and Mary
(Custer)
Hackenberger.

Samuel Hackenberger was born in Conoy township, and his wife in East Donegal township; both died in Bainbridge, to which point they removed shortly after their marriage. They lived in Bainbridge the greater part of their lives, with the exception of six years spent at Maytown, and two years at Rowenna. Mr. Hackenberger began life as a farmer, and then became a manufacturer of cigars in Maytown. In 1847 he moved back to Bainbridge, and three years later entered the drug business, in which he continued until his death which occurred in 1887, when he was aged seventy-nine years. Mrs. Mary Hackenberger died in 1881, at the age of seventy-one years. They were members of the Lutheran Church. He was a Democrat except during the war period, when he voted the Republican ticket. Of their children, John died at the age of fifty-four years; George W. is mentioned below; Mary A., who died in 1899, was twice married, first to John Groff, later to Philip Shaffer; Lavina became the wife of Lieut. Mullin, of Topeka, Kan.; Samuel, Jacob, Elizabeth and Catherine died young; Samuel (2) is a life insurance agent of Philadelphia.

The paternal grandparents of George W. Hackenberger were George and Mary
(Hollinger) Hackenberger, their grandfather born in Germany, and the grandmother in Lancaster county. They settled in that county, where they were farming people. When a very young man he took part in the Revolutionary war. The maternal grandparents of George W. Hackenberger were George and Elizabeth Custer, who came from Germany and settled in East Donegal township at an early day, engaging in farming. He died while still a young man, but his wife lived to be seventy-five years old.

George W. Hackenberger was married, in Elizabethtown, in September, 1861, to Miss Mary A. Pence, and to this union came the following children: Walter, who died young; Iva N., who married N. R. Hoffman, lives with her father, and is a drug clerk; Lewis S., a coach builder and painter in Lancaster, married to Amanda Manning; George W., manager of two drug stores in New York City; Harry F., chief clerk in a drug house in New York City, who was with Gen. Miles in the Porto Rican campaign, as telegraph operator, 9th N. Y. Signal Corps. Mrs. Mary A. Hackenberger was born in Conoy township in 1842, daughter of William and Hettie (Snyder) Pence. Her father was born in Maytown, and her mother in Conoy township, and they were farming people all their lives.

George W. Hackenberger spent the first eight years of his life in Bainbridge and Maytown, going to school, and then begin stripping tobacco and making cigars for four years at or near Rowenna. Then coming back to Bainbridge, he continued in the same work till he was twenty-six years old. At that age he began teaching school. In 1873 he received a teacher's permanent certificate from the State Superintendent of Public Instruction, the late Hon. J. P. Wickersham. He followed this calling for thirty-four sessions, thirty sessions in one and the same school. He retired from teaching in 1897, to take entire charge of his drug store, in which his daughter Iva had been clerk, while he was teaching in the school room. Mr. Hackenberger became a druggist in 1878 and is now (1902) still engaged in that business. He was elected twelve times as auditor of Conoy township, for three years each. He is a man of ability, highly respected in the community, and holding to a marked degree the confidence of the general public. Mr. Hackenberger is a member of the G. A. R. and of the 0. U. A. M. In politics he is a staunch Republican, and in religious belief a devout member of the Lutheran Church. He is one of the solid and substantial men of his community and well deserves a prominent place among the leading men of Conoy township, Lancaster county.

Mr. Hackenberger had a somewhat brief but valuable military experience, enlisting in Co. H, 195th P. V. I., in February, 1865; he was discharged in January, 1866. He was made clerk in a general court martial, Department of Washington, where he was on duty for six months. While on picket duty during the closing days of the war, he participated in the picket line firing against the noted Col., Mosby's forces. His regiment was in the 3rd Brigade, 3rd Division, Army of the Shenandoah, under Gen. Phil. H. Sheridan.
