Clark County (IL) Democrat 11/02/1898

Daniel Higginbotham (1835-1898) OH/IN

Daniel Higginbotham was born in Hillsboro, Highland County, Ohio, November 17th, 1835. He was the son of George and Sarah Higginbotham. He moved with his parents, about 1850, to Indiana where he attended the country school and received a fair education. He was married to Martha, daughter of Daniel and Libbie Durham, February 8, 1855. He moved with his father-in-law to Illinois in October 1855, and settled in Wabash Township, where he spent the remainder of his days. Daniel was the father of nine children all of whom are now living--seven sons and two daughters, all of whom are grown and have made useful men and women. Mr. Higginbotham was a man of rugged honesty, a hard worker, and strictly temperate. When he came to this country he was poor in worldly goods, but by industry and economy he earned a beautiful home for his family. He was a Union soldier and was a member of the Protestant Methodist church. He was a Mason also and belonged to the lodge at Livingston. In politics he was a Democrat. He believed in building up and improving the country. Up to a little over a year ago few men in this country seemed to have a better prospect for a long life than Mr. Higginbotham, but some time in the fall of 1897, symptoms of chronic diarrhea and Bright's disease became apparent. All attempts to check these diseases were futile. There were times when he would rally for a few days and seem better and then he would relapse and grow weaker than ever. So he continued to grow worse. On October 19th he became much worse and died Saturday morning October 22nd, 1898. All through his illness he claimed he wished to get well but if it was the Master's will for him to die he was willing to go, he had no fears. He was 63 years, 11 months and 5 days old. The funeral was held at the family residence at 2 p.m., Sunday, October 23rd, Rev. J. A. Page officiating. The remains were laid to rest at Highland Lawn Cemetery, Terre Haute. The services were held under the auspices of Lodge No. 19 A.F and A.M., of Terre Haute. The pallbearers, all of who were selected by Mr. Higginbotham a short time before his death were Walker Wilson, John Walker, Moses Bland, Newton Weaver, Doug Weaver and J. S. Fishback.

Harry George Higginbotham, youngest son of Mr. and Mrs. L. F. Higginbotham, was born in Milton, Wayne county, Indiana, November 13, 1883. He died at home in Holton, Kans., March 29, 1918. For five years he had been in failing health and although he tried different climates to better it, was of no avail, and on February 14th he touched his key for the last time and came to be with his parents in the home that hopes that he would be able to regain his strength and return to his work, to which he was very devoted. It was not to be, however, and his strength gradually failed and he peacefully passed away. The funeral was held on Saturday afternoon at the home. It was conducted by Rev. J. W. Martin. The music was furnished by a quartet composed of Messrs. Guy Hursh, Lloyd Smythe, Mrs. E. R. Sloane and Miss Alta Francis. He was laid to rest in the Holton cemetery.

Mack Kay Higginbotham (1913-1995) IL/IN

Mack Kay Higginbotham, composer of the popular World War II tune "Good-Bye Dear, I'll Be Back in a Year," died Friday at Bloomington Convalescent Center. He was 82. A resident of Bloomington since 1978, Higginbotham was born Jan. 1, 1913, in Chicago, Ill., the son of Mack K. and Grace (Voyles) Higginbotham. After winning an amateur songwriting contest in the late 1930s at the old Lyric Theater in Indianapolis, Higginbotham traveled to New York's Tin Pan Alley. Writing under the name of Mack Kay, his career in music included over 60 published songs and over 50 professional records of his works. His most popular hits included the 1941 recording by Horace Heidt of "Good-Bye Dear, I'll Be Back in a Year." It was an all-time Billboard "Cavalcade of Juke Box Hits" selection that year and in recent years was used in the soundscores for movies Biloxi Blues and Shining Through. The World War II hit was also used as a recruiting song for the National Guard at one time. "Nothin's Too Good For My Baby," Higginbotham's second most popular song, was a best-selling recording for Louie Prima and Keely Smith in the 1950s. Some of Higginbotham's other better-known published songs include the 1939 "What This Country Needs is More Foo," based on Bill Holman's comic strip "Smokey Stover"; "Thank You Lucky Stars and Stripes," a patriotic hit; "One Raindrop Doesn't Make A Shower," introduced by Perry Como in 1948 on his Chesterfield Supper Show; and "On Accounta Because I Love You," recorded by the Modernaires in 1949. Other artists who have recorded his works include Sammy Kaye, Guy Lombardo, Arthur Godfrey and the Mitchell Ayres. From 1951 to 1978, Higginbotham pursued a banking career in New York City, where he headed the consignment section of the Irving Trust Co. Retiring to the Bloomington community, Higginbotham continued his love of music composing songs and doing arrangements for the local Tonecutters and Sweet Adelines; paid tribute to the beauty and hospitality of the Nashville area in his song, "Down in Brown County, I.N.D."; and honored his new home town with "Bloomington Rag" which was performed at the dedication of the All-America sculpture in 1985. He had just recently completed a score for a musical about Brown County, said his daughter, Linda G. K. Higginbotham. A signalman 2nd class in the Navy during World War II, Higginbotham was a member of the Disabled American Veterans. His memberships also include the American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers and University Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife, Jeanne K. (Stephens) Higginbotham; his daughter of Bloomington; two brothers, Bill Higginbotham and Bert Higginbotham, both of Los Angeles, Calif.; one grandson; several nieces and nephews.
