Nicholas Sinks was born about 1771, possibly in Rockingham County, Virginia, from whence he moved about 1797 to Newtown, Ohio, to "follow tanning" with his wife Margaret Pence, born about 1774 in Virginia. In 1801, they relocated to Williamsburg, Ohio where he established a tanyard, and, in the spring of 1804, purchased a tavern and its goodwill from Thomas Morris. The tavern, across the street from the courthouse, was often used as a meeting place, including the first meeting of the Board of Commissioners, 4 Jun 1804. In 1805, Nicholas resided in the house in which it was decided to use one room for court and he agreed to furnish benches, etc. Nicholas was the third postmaster of Williamsburg and county treasurer for seventeen years, and otherwise prominent in public affairs.

Nicholas died 9 Apr 1825 in Williamsburg, Clermont Co Ohio, at 53 years of age. His body was interred in Williamsburg Cemetery. In the 1850 census, Margaret was still alive, living with her daughter Margaret Sinks Justice.
