John U. ROTH was born about 1836 in Switzerland, In the 1860 census, his occupation is listed as painter. This occupation also shows up for him in the 1872 City Directory. In 1880 and in other years in the City Directories, he is listed as a milliner. Through 1872, the family is living at 147 Genesee Street but by 1878 they have moved to 341 Ellicott Street.
John married, probably about 1858, Jane Amanda (maiden name unknown), listed in 1860 as a milliner, born in Prussia. Jane was born about 1840 [1900 has Dec 1837] and died 8 October 1930. John is listed in the 1880 household but Jane appears as a widow in 1900 so he has presumably died sometime during those two decades. Preliminary research in the city directories [thanks Ed!!!!!] indicate that perhaps he died in the early 1880's.
The 1880 Census gives John's occupation as milliner and Jane's as 'keeping house'. Their son Edward is listed as bookkeeper and the space for his sister Alice says "Fire Ins. Office At Home" but I believe this refers to Edward, not his sister. This household also includes a boarder, Lillie NUSE, age 23, a milliner.
Jane Amanda Roth and all of her children are buried in Lots 50 and 51 in Section 15 of the Forest Lawn Cemetery. Jane purchased these lots 4 May 1911, shortly after the death of Dr. George A. Pontius on 22 April 1911. George is logically the husband of John and Jane's daughter Anna but this is not certain. The list of children and dates below is primarily reconstructed from the cemetery information.
By 1900, Jane and two of her daughters, Alice and Pearl, have moved to 584 Potomoc Avenue. [Erie County V46, ED 203, Sheet 3 Line 69]
- Edward C. ROTH born October 1859 died 24 Feb 1955. [see further below]
- Alice Amanda ROTH born September 1861 died 19 February 1922
- Anna ROTH born about 1867 and died 20 June 1927. Anna married a PONTIUS, probably the George A PONTIUS who is the only individual in the cemetery lots without a stated relationship to the lot owner.
- Willis ROTH born April 1870 died 31 December 1931 at Cornwall on Hudson. His wife is probably Ellen C. who died 31 December 1931 at Newburgh New York. This couple is probably the Willis and Ellen ROTH listed at 392 Fenimore in Brooklyn New York in 1900 with a daughter Alice born April 1899. [Kings County V99 ED546 Sheet 19 Line 85]
- Pearl ROTH born April 1875 and died 23 December 1953. She married --?-- MANKEL.
Edward C. ROTH (John1) was born October of 1859. He married Harriet Weller born in 1872 in Buffalo, Erie Co NY. Edward died 24 Feb 1955 in Buffalo, Erie Co NY, at 94 years of age. Harriet died 27 July 1924 in Buffalo, Erie Co NY, at 52 years of age. Harriett's family owned Weller Carriage Works and both she and Edward C. were said to be from "prominent Buffalo, New York families". My grandfather, Edward's son, wrote about the Weller's that "Weller Carriage Works made top quality carriages which were sold to wealthy persons. When the automobile came along the sons made no attempt to change and the company passed out of the picture." census records indicate that Harriett's father was born in Germany and her mother in England. The 1900 and 1910 census list this family at 102 Oakland Place in Buffalo, New York. In 1900, Edward's occupation is listed as "insurance" and they own their own home although it is mortgaged.
Edward and Harriett had two children:
- Marion Louise ROTH born June 1894 and died 27 November 1945. My mother said that Marion never married and devoted her life to her father.
- Edward Howard Hutchison ROTH born 18 September 1896 [more below]
Edward Howard Hutchison ROTH (John1, Edward C2) was born in Buffalo, Erie Co NY 18 Sep 1896. The "son of two prominent Buffalo families", he married first to Lois Dorothy Kellogg in Buffalo, Erie Co NY, 10 May 1920 [divorced by 1930] and died 6 December 1986 in NY. Edward married secondly to Elizabeth L. Kloiber on 26 April 1930 and then, 11 October 1941 to Marion Butts who died 27 March 1985. After Marion's death he married for a fourth time, to Natalie Kubera on 11 July 1986.
Lois Dorothy Kellogg was born in Buffalo, Erie Co NY 20 Jun 1899. Lois died ca 1970 in Scottsdale AZ. Lois was the daughter of Spencer Kellogg and Lida Deshler Wilson.
Edward and Lois had three children, my mother Elizabeth Lindsay Roth and my uncles, Edward "Ted" and Howard "Kell".
