    Like many other families of European descent, the Weitzel name has

been spelled many ways.  The descendants of Johann Paul Weitzel have

used the spelling Weitzel, Whitesell and Whytsell.  The spelling in

this paper is the same as it was found in sources used.

 

1.JOHANN PAUL WEITZEL

 

    Johann Paul Weitzel, a son of Peter Weitzel, was born in Oberingelheim, Rheinland-Pfalz, Germany February 15, 1716 and died in Lancaster County PA August 28, 1797. Johann emigrated to America, arriving at Philadelphia aboard the ship "loyal Judith" September 3, 1742.  He was naturalized at Lancaster, PA April 10 and April 12, 1762.

    He married Charlotte Elizabeth Frauler about 1745.  Charlotte, a daughter of Josta and Christina Frauler, was born June 20, 1772 and died in Lancaster County June 13, 1793.

    Johann Peter Whitesel, a son of Johann Paul and Charlotte Elizabeth (Frauler) Weitzel, was born in Lancaster County PA October 31, 1746 and died in Rockingham County VA in September 1815.  He was baptized in the First Reformed Church at Lancaster, PA November 13, 1746.

    Peter married Anna Metz in the First Reformed Church in Lancaster March 14, 1769.  Anna, a daughter of Baltzer and Maria Metz, was born in Lancaster County March 14, 1750 and died in Rockingham County VA before December 15, 1832.

    George Whitesel, a son of Peter and Anna (Metz) Whitesel, was born in Washington County MD March 29, 1791 and died in Rockingham County VA October 10, 1868.  He married Susanna Tutwiler August 15, 1809 in Rockingham County.  Susanna, a daughter of Leonard and Catharina Tutwiler, was born in Rockingham December 12, 1791 and died there about 1870.

    Emanuel H. Whytsell, a son of John Jr. and Elizabeth "Betsy" (Shank) Whitesel. was born in Rockingham County VA July 19, 1814 and died in Calhoun County WV in 1891.  He married Catherine Whitezel in Rockingham County VA June 11, 1838.  Catharine, a daughter of George and Susanna (Tutwiler) Whitesel, was born in Rockingham County May 8, 1816.  The family lived in Rockingham County VA, near Harrisonburg. Between 1850 and 1860, they moved to Braxton County VA and then to Calhoun County VA about the beginning of the Civil War.

    Children birthdates come from a page of the family bible, preserved by the heirs of Minnie Jackson Lloyd.

     Susan, a daughter of Levi and Margaret (Sipes) Whytsell, was born in Rockingham County, VA January 30, 1842 and died before 1916. She married a widower, Mathias Gerwig, November 24, 1878. Mathias, a son of George Friederich and Juliana Elizabeth (Konig) Gerwig, was born in Germany July 3, 1832 and died January 4, 1920.  He emigrated to Catonsville, MD with his  family in 1833 and came to the German settlement in BRaxton County, VA (WV). with them in 1840.

    He married Sarah Ellen Lloyd July 31, 1857.  Sarah, a daughter of Isaac Hyer and  Catherine Mary (McPherson) Lloyd, was born in Braxton County, VA (WV) February 27, 1839 and died there January 14, 1878. Mathias was a superb horseman and served in the Civil War in General Philip Sheridan"s escort.  He was in 91 engagements during hat war.  Mathias served as a post master of German, WV (now Chapel).  Mathias married Laura Mapes at St. Cloud, FL January 15, 1916.

    George Henry Whytsell, a son of Emanuel H. and Catherine (Whitezel) Whytsell, was born in Rockingham County VA May 12, 1847 and died in Nicholas County WV December 21, 1937.  He married Virginia Catherine Quickle in Braxton County September 5, 1867.  Catharine, a daughter of William Henry and Margaret Catherine (Sively) Quickel, was born in Alleghany County VA June 14, 1848 and died in Nicholas County July 6, 1889.

    George married Nancy Jane Jones about 1890.  Nancy was born in Greenbrier County VA (WV) July 8, 1860 and died in Nicholas County May 19 1942.

    "A Sketch on the Life of George H. Whytsell" by W.L. Adkins was published in "The Braxton Democrat" December 15, 1932 and reprinted in "The Journal of the Braxton Historical Society" in June 1979.  The article quotes traditional family history, but contains several errors.  The article reads as follows.

    "Mr. George H. Whytsell was born 12 May, 1847, in Rockingham County, Virginia. The place of his birth was a one-room log house located about six miles from Harrisonburg, Virginia, and two miles from Mt. Crawford, Virginia. His parents were German. His mother was born in Germany and his father was born in the Valley of Virginia of German parents, his grandparents having come to this country some times before the birth of his father."

    Joseph died of fever two weeks after Lidia and their nine minor children were divided amongst relatives immediately after Joseph's funeral.

    Mary married a wodower, Levi Minter Squires.  Levi, a son of

Newlon and Louisa Jane (Prince) Squires, was born April 27, 1862 and

died in Braxton County September 4, 1935.  He had first married Dora

Bell Hammer.
