    The Vandal family named is one of many that have changed over the

years.  many of Abraham's defendants use the spelling Vandale instead

of the original Vandal.  This paper will use the spelling that each

person uses, so far as the information is available.

 

1.ABRAHAM VANDAL

 

    Abraham Vandal in dutchese County NY October 18, 1758 and died

March 1, 1857.  One source describes him as "a New York born

Dutchman."  He served in the American Revolution.  He enlisted in

Orange County NY March 1, 1766 and served two years under Captains

Wiezner and W. Blaine and in NY and VA regiments under Isaac Nichols

and general Clinton.  He re-enlisted in Captain John Wood's Company of

Colonel McLaughlin's Regiment January 10, 1777.  He married Mary

Dillon.  In 1840, he was lining in Fayette County VA with E.D. Vandal.

2.JAMES ABRAHAM VANDAL     1.ABRAHAM VANDAL

 

    James Abraham Vandal, a son of Abraham and Mary (Dillon) Vandal,

was born in Rockbridge County VA January 6, 1781.  He moved with his

family to Greenbrier County VA (WV) about 1792.  He married Sarah

Boggs March 18, 1806. Sarah, a daughter of John and Susan (Drennan)

Boggs, was born July 26, 1789 and died in Roane County Va (WV) July

26, 1858.

    James served in the War of 1812.  The family moved to present day

Roane County WV December 2, 1832.

3.JONATHAN L. VANDAL     1.ABRAHAM VANDAL

 

    Jonathan L. Vandal, a son of Abraham and Mary (Dillon) Vandal, was

born in Rockbridge County VA in 1790 and died in 1853.  He married

Nancy Boggs October 15, 1809.  Nancy, a daughter of John and Susan

(Drennan) Boggs, was born in 1791 and died in June 1856.

    According to one source, Nancy ran away to KY with a cousin,

George Boggs.  Jonathan divorced Nancy for desertion and married

Abigail Blake in 1814.  Abigail was a daughter of Peter and Mary

(Curran) Blake.  Abigail died in 1826.

    Jonathan married Rachel W. Wiseman.  Rachel was a daughter of

William and Phoebe (Honaker) Wiseman.  Rachel died in 1834.

    Jonathan then remarried Nancy (Boggs) Vandal.

    Andrew L. Vandal, a son of James Abraham and Sarah (Boggs) Vandal,

was born about 1830.  He married Rebecca Sheppard March 1, 1857.

    Calvin Smith Vandale, a son of Andrew L. and Rebecca (Sheppard)

Vandal, was born August 3, 1863.  Traditional family history states

that he changed his name from "Vandal" to "Vandale" while attending

West Point Military Academy.  He was a room mate of future General

John J. "Black Jack" Pershing at West Point.

    He married Leota Hardman.  Leota was a daughter of Cassett and

Isabella (Burdette) Hardman.

    Fred Earl Vandale, a son of Calvin Smith and Leota (Hardman)

Vandale, was born August 27, 1888 and died December 20, 1945.  He

married Lela Hardman.  Lela, a daughter of Allen and narcissus (Barr)

Hardman, was born about 1890 and died June 1, 1976.

    George Andrew Vandale, a son of Fred Earl and Lela (Hardman)

Vandale, was born November 24, 1915 and died July 28, 1989.  He

married Wilma E. Frail December 30, 1936.

Vandale, was born February 26, 1918 and died may 22, 1951.  He married

Helen B. Goad December 20, 1939.
