The only documentary evidence of the first of the known Truman

family is the will of Thomas Trueman that was filed for probate March

3, 1754 in Culpepper County VA. Inventory of the estate showed the

bulk of the estate being left to his wife, Ann Trueman.

Apparently Robert and his wife Jane moved from Culpepper County

to Harrison County VA (WV) about the beginning of 1796, since he is

listed on the Harrison County tax rolls of May 31, 1796. Other

records show that Robert bought 87 acres of land in the head of Stouts

Run in Harrison County from John Gregory October 18, 1802. He sold

this same land to Jacob Mark March 16, 1812.

Thomas Truman, a son of Robert and Jane Truman, was born in Culpepper County VA May 7, 1791 and died in Calhoun County, WV September 28, 1875. Thomas served in the War of 1812, enlisting at Clarksburg VA (WV) in August of 1812 and being honorably discharged at Fort Meigs, Delaware, Ohio in March of 1813 after service in Captain Patton's company. He married Elizabeth Leadman in Harrison County VA (WV) June 7, 1813. Elizabeth was born in Harrison County July 18, 1797

and died in Calhoun County WV January 1, 1878.

Barbary, a daughter of Thomas and Mary "Polly" (O'Brien) Cottrell, was born about 1817. Barbary died about 1851 and Silas then married Hannah E. ---. Silas may have been part of the Cottrell group that periodically moved back and forth between Vinton County Ohio and

Calhoun County WV, since part of his younger children were born in each state.

Barnabas Truman, a son of Thomas and Elizabeth (Leadman) Truman, was born in Kanawha County VA (WV) February 22, 1827 and died in Braxton County WV May 7, 1887. He married Virginia James about 1847. Virginia, a daughter of Jesse and Mary "Polly" (Given) James, was born about 1830 in VA and died in Nicholas County, WV March 8, 1876. Barnabas served the Confederacy in the Civil War, enlisting as a private in Capt. John Bland's Company of the 14th Regiment, VA Cavalry October 4, 1862 at Summersville, Nicholas County VA (WV). He was

captured by the Union Army in Greenbrier County November 26, 1862 and spent time in Athenum Prison at Wheeling, WV, at Camp Chase in Ohio and at Alton, IL.

He was paroled from Alton and sent to City Point, VA for exchange of prisoners April 1, 1863. For the remainder of the War, Barnabas was carried on the muster rolls of Co.I, 17 VA Cavalry as absent due to sickness in hospital at Montgomery White Sulphur until October 20, 1863 and then either absent without leave or absent "Sick in Braxton Co. VA." For a time there was a $50 bounty for Barnabas' return.

Mary, a daughter of Richard and Sarah (Rawlings) Howell, was born October 28, 1831 and died March 13, 1897. Shedrick served the Confederacy in the Civil War in Co.H 19th VA Cavalry.

Elijah Truman, a son of John and Sarah (Runnion) Truman, was born June 12, 1841 in Calhoun County VA (WV) and died July 3, 1931 at Chehalis Washington. Elijah served the Union in the Civil War in Co.B 9th W.VA. Infantry. He was mustered as a Private at Spencer, Roane County VA September 30, 1861. The 5th and 9th W.VA. Infantry Regiments were consolidated November 9, 1864 and Co. B records were closed. Elijah and one other soldier are listed in the final history as deserters, but no judicial action was ever taken and they were never officially mustered out. He married Youwarkie Collins, January 21, 1864 in Roane County WV. Youwarkie, a daughter of Archibald and Margaret (Coots) Collins, was born in Pike County KY in October 1844. Elijah and Youwarkie separated and dissolved all common property in Roane County WV in 1901. Elijah went to Washington in 1907 with several of his children.

Mary "Polly" Truman, a daughter of William and Julia Ann (Jarvis) Truman, was born in Lewis County, VA in March 1850 and died August 21, 1915. She married a widower, William Perry Cottrell September 4, 1873 in Calhoun County WV.

William, a son of Silas and Sabra (Cox) Cottrell, was born in Kanawha County VA (WV) June 17, 1838 and died in Calhoun County WV November 4, 1919. William served the Union in the Civil War, enlisting in Co. B. 9th W.Va. Infantry March 1, 1862 and re-enlisting as a Veteran Volunteer March 31, 1864 under General Order #191. He was wounded at Winchester Virginia August 26, 1864, transferred to Co. "I" 1st W.Va. Infantry and discharged July 21, 1865.

On May 23, 1860, he married Sarah White. Sarah, a daughter of William and Nancy (Deal) White, was born in Logan County, Virginia July 17, 1841 and died in Calhoun County WV March 8, 1873.

For a time, Harry received nationwide attention on television, radio, and newspapers and magazines because of his refusal to leave his home on the slopes of Mount St. Helens. The area where Harry's home stood was completely obliterated and covered with ash and mud during the

eruption.
